- During IMDEX Asia 2017, the international maritime defence exhibition held last month in Singapore, Navy Recognition had the chance to get aboard the latest addition to the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) fleet: RSS Independence, the first of the next generation Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV), designed and built by local shipyard ST Marine.
In January 2013, Singapore's Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd for the construction of eight LMVs for the RSN. The eight LMVs are currently being built locally by ST Engineering's subsidiary ST Marine (ST Marine), based on a design jointly developed by ST Marine and Saab Kockums AB. The Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) is the overall programme manager and systems integrator for the LMV programme. The eight new LMVs will replace the RSN's Fearless-class patrol vessels (PVs), which have been in service for about 20 years.

Darn that ship has some advanced systems in it. The USN should try similar display systems in their ships, although it would be on a much larger scale. Also that RHIB launch and recovery system looks slick.

I was just thinking the same thing. Had they worked as advertised, the LCS would’ve been more capable. Since they don’t, this would’ve been a cost effective and very capable successor to the cyclones.
What a well thought out design. The USN should take note you can do a lot with less money and employ good imagination.
The USN has little use for a craft such as this. The US Coast Guard, maybe, but it is clearly not an effective blue-water ship.
I didn't say the USN should have a craft like this, I said they should take note you don't need masses of money to design and employ a well thought out ship like this one. Going by reported comments from inside the US DoD, the USN has little use for the LCS, at least this one is better thought out.
Sturgeon's Law This ship replaces the fearless class patrol vessels which are for patrolling they are smaller and less capable armed a 76mm gum and mistral surface to air missile as well as rhib. The lmv is faster, sharper and smarter designed for the patrol mission but more hence littoral mission vessel is the term so its missiom is specfically for patrol whst it can do is stay out im oceans for 14days. it is better equiped with mica anti air and missile to missile as well as a 25mm typhoon gun, a pair of 12.7mm gun RWS by oto melera and 76mm super rapid gun by oto melera. It has better sensors and radars. More modular to meet different missions.

Sturgeon's Law Agree yes. However it is all about operational requirements. Both ships are for different purposes. US navy demands more obviously when you are the most powerful military.

The heli deck can be removed to insert the modules below deck.
The same way as how to put elephant in the fridge..first you open the heli deck door...than by crane or heli..you put the container in...than you close the door

Smart vessel but a little wasted. Because the LMV does not have any single anti-submarine capabilities.
It does actually..
the space for 8 20-foot containers..allows all kinds of weapons and flexibility. The deck can carry a Seahawk, armed with torpedos and dipping sonar.
Technically any surroundings nations who might present threats to the national security of Singapore do not have operationally sound submarine warfare capabilities, and Singapore's military does not stand a chance against an invasion of big powers who do possess proper submarine warfare assets. So this new vessel would not need a full time anti submarine warfare suit, but having the option of configuring it is enough.

Also, I also used to think modern ships were just for looks but many of the weapon systems are hidden. Eg. Missiles and CIWS. Gone are the days of 18 inch guns.
