  • Naval News takes you aboard ITS Francesco Morosini (P431), one of the latest and most modern surface combatant in the Italian Navy (Marina Militare)'s fleet.
We interview exclusively the commanding officer, CMDR Giovanni Monno, on the PPA (Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura) class of patrol vessels.
The PPA are a new class of Italian Navy combatant platforms which represents a technological and capability jump compared to current generation. Design to conduct a wide range of missions, from maritime security to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), the PPAs are being delivered in three configurations (Light, Light Plus and Full) based on common platform and differencing for the new generation sensors and weapon outfit. With an overall length of 143 m, a beam of 16.5 m, a 5m draught and a displacement of ca 6350 tonnes at full load (PPA in the Full configuration), the PPAs are distinguished by a unique hull design featuring a wave-piercing bow for higher speeds, stabiliser fins positioned amidships, a steel hull up to the first level over the main deck, the superstructures divided into main blocks and two modular multipurpose areas respectively amidship and under the flight deck to accommodate a range of equipment to conduct from military to HADR operations.

fincantieri bought marinette marine when lcs were being built by Lockheed and MM. for the hull they chose the project holder of the "destriero" yacht holder of the blue ribbon, so if both suck for the armament and sensors it is certainly not Fincantieri's fault, and it is the Australian hull that has problems with aluminum. an overrated WW1 57mm pea shooter instead of a 76mm cannon, which is very well used by Israel. This ship is a big step forward. Apart from the revolutionary cockpit, the modularity is just amazing. Removable davits, and crane, that impresive hangar, are making this platform extremely versatile. Actually, this ship can be configured in a very short period of time, to any type of mission. The electric propulsion facilitates even MCM ops. This kind of ships are needed for small navies which can't afford to keep too many classes of specialized warships.

After the entry into service of the new Orizzonte-class destroyers in the Italian Navy in the second half of the 2000s, the Italian Ministry of Defense decided to replace the Luigi Duran De La Penne-class destroyers and commissioned Fincantieri to design a new type of destroyer. we still know very little about this new class. the little information circulating says that they will be between 175/185 meters long, have a displacement of 11/12,000 tons and will carry 2 helicopters between augustawestland aw101 and nh90. these units are expected to enter service in 2030/35, but the war in ukraine has prompted the ministry to accelerate all ongoing programmes. obviously Italy does not have the budget of the United States, so every single cent must be spent in a targeted way, reducing waste to a minimum. but lately france and another unspecified country have shown interest in the ddx program, this will allow development and design costs to be spread across multiple units and could give greater impetus to the entire program. the plan provides for the construction of 16 units for the Italian navy, but at the moment only 7 have been financed. divided into 2 Light: light version, suitable for coastal patrolling and combating crime at sea, 3 Light+: medium version, suitable for both coastal patrol and support and combat, 2 Full: heavy version, suitable for front line combat. the displacement varies from 4600 tons of the Light version (the one featured in this video and a light variant) to 6300 tons in Full configuration. all the variants have been designed to be brought to the full version, without making structural changes and in a short time. substantially all the units are already prepared from birth. the war in ukraine prompted the italian ministry of defense to evaluate the possibility of bringing all units to the full version. the p430 Paolo Thaon di Revel and the p431 Francesco Morosini are already in service and are both light. the p432 Raimondo Montecuccoli, will be delivered to the navy in June, and is a light+ version, the p434 Giovanni delle Bande Nere, is carrying out sea trials and will be delivered in 2024, this one and already in full configuration. also in 2024 the p433 Marcantonio Colonna will be delivered, which is in the light+ version. the other 2 have not yet been launched and in the original plans the p435 Ruggiero di Lauria is a light+ variant, while the p436 Domenico Millelire is a full version. but it seems that the p435 hull will also be launched in a full version. both units will be delivered in 2026

Trials have shown that modern day submarines can effectively sink the US carriers and that is a bad news for the whole NATO.
As partners we share security and defendive roles while escorting their carriers here in Europe and now we have shared such capabilities with them kn order to minimize the risks in a real situation.

      Hi sir.
In modern warships the CIC are however placed on the same island as the bridge, behind, below or above the bridge (it depends), usually close to the main Radar.
Today's ships are not primarily designed to withstand ASuW missile hits(or other generic Cruise missiles), but have evolved their systems to avoid being hit.
In case of successful penetration of a warhead even near the bridge/CIC it would be fatal (both for instruments and for the Staff), especially if the missile contains a heavy warhead or if it's a hypersonic missile.

News just out: two PPAs under construction and ready to be launched will be ceded to Indonesia. I read on a site (I think Indonesian) that Indonesia has asked the Italian government to hand over at least two PPAs to it immediately, without having to wait years for construction. It seems that Italy has agreed, since the situation in the South China Sea is deteriorating.

I think it is because it is a Patrol ships or Light duty "Frigate" as opposed to say a front line vessel like the Arliegh Burkes or other Destroyers. So they benefit more from the kind of situational awareness and crew movement. I think in a front line warship, they would like build the CIC & Bridge in different areas and armor the CIC (well with anti-spall).

in reality the PLOP is not a reserve CIC, the snow is also designed to provide humanitarian aid. amidships there is the modular section, at this point various types of modules can be installed, such as hospital modules, by installing them a mini hospital on board is created with additional beds and equipment for complex operations. other modules are for example the command and control, which allows the ship to become a management platform for the operations of a naval team, or the modules for special forces, these are installed in the case of missions that require the presence of special forces coalition etc. there are also modules for adding weapon systems. the PLOP, in addition to its ordinary tasks, can manage the added modules, the ship has the ability to intervene immediately in areas where natural disasters occur and can provide electricity and drinking water to a population of 15,000 people. all these things are managed by PLOP. but unlike the other units present in the world today, no PPA system is physically connected to the stations, for example, on the command bridge there is also the classic helmsman, positioned in the classic rearward point. the helmsman gets up from the front pilot's seat, goes to the wheelhouse, enters his credentials and the guidance of the unit passes to the classic wheelhouse. in a war zone, if a ship is hit at any point, it can no longer continue the fight and must retreat to the second or third line of battle. if in extreme cases, the ship is hit and both the bridge and the CIC are destroyed, the PLOP takes command of the ship to retreat, not to continue the fight, but since unlike the other units, the ship's brain is not positioned in the CIC, the ship can still defend itself, because all systems remain operational and can be migrated to the PLOP. this station is not managed by a lieutenant of a frigate or vessel, as usually happens, but is commanded by a corvette captain. this is because in the event of the disaster mentioned above, it is assumed that the entire general staff of the ship is dead present in those points, therefore the entire command hierarchy. this way, the unit will still have a working command line. the electronic system of this class of ships is so complex that 4 people, 2 sitting in the pilot's seat, one sitting in the position on the right (the one that in the video, at minute 2.35 can be glimpsed hidden by a cloth with the writing Leonardo) and the in the other position on the left, they would be able to govern the entire unit, without the help of anyone else. weapon system included.

The funny thing is that this class of ship has more power and displacement than a traditional frigate, in fact when fully equipped it has the offensive power of a destroyer, including the capacity for coastal bombardment, but the Navy had to call it a "Patrol Vessel" because the pacifists in parliament would have been angry if Italy had too many front line ships in its fleet.

Quite well-armed for a "light frigate" that displaces just shy of 5000 tons, and the control systems on board represent a very interesting approach to operational management. I wish the USN had designed and built (in appropriate numbers) a ship like this instead of the LCS class. Bellissimo! 🫡

with this configuration we need less personal than a light figade( ppa is more or less a lite frigade for tons ) and has more space to impove firepower or asw capability. fremm /costellation its more or less the same tonns but it cost more than buble in milions dollars witout asw army like mu90 torpedo not included in desing
