A few responses to questions I've gotten so far.... Bad Orange peel due to heat and humidity. I recommend using Speedokote 2k urethane clear coat system with optional activators best for the money with Rust-Oleum! I did 2 coats of base 5 coats of clear using just two quarts of the paint and 3/4 of the gallon could easily do a bigger vehicle or all the jams and sorry if the music wasn't for everyone's taste and or too loud! Thanks for watching everyone 😎👍
Awesome video. I need to point out may help you and the audience. The humidity isn't as big of a factor in this case, but the temp. is, of course. The main reason for orange peel seems to be that you used a spot panel clear, instead of an overall clear. Spot panel clear is meant for small production jobs, and sets up quicker. It has a shorter open time, and will dry quicker. Just trying to help brother.
A couple days ago I tried my new HVLP with a 80% Rust-oleum black gloss & 20% acetone. I guess I put the coats on to quickly and after a couple days it progressively got worst as it tried to dry. I finally scraped as much paint off as I could. Of course I don't know much about painting, but I'm going to change my ratios and add a hardener so it might level out. I guess I'll keep trying until I can stop the the orange peel. Then I'll spray the clear coat with Pearl. In my old and almost used up brain, I still think that the orange peel has to be eliminated in order to produce a flat and leveled out clear coat. Your paint job came out great, I'm just lazy and don't want to have to buff it out - that is my latest dream to come true! Thank you for all your time and money that you put into your videos. It is very appreciated and congrats again for reaching 10K !!!!
Yeah I don't know if you painted when it was very hot and humid out but that will affect it too but definitely try 60% paint 40% acetone and let the Rustoleum lay out about 20 minutes between coats and on the last coat give it a good medium coat see what that does for you I appreciate you watching the channel let me know how it turns out
I love creating my own custom colors too. I just mixed smoke gray and gloss black about 50/50 and it made a beautiful dark gray. And a little hardener makes a huge difference too.
my dad used to paint tractors, vehicles, sheds, guitars, guns, the toilet and shower floor in our shop, the fridges, our lifts, etc, with that paint with catalyst reducer and hardener.
I've gotten hooked on Finish1 FC740 clear coat. A slightly thicker, high solids clear coat that can take a bit to cure, but it levels out beautifully. Last 3 jobs I've done, I got great off the gun results with zero cutting and buffing required.
I'll have to try it for the next project we sell it at work I've been meaning to use it but I saw this for a little bit cheaper and figured Id take a chance thanks for watching!!!
@@WHITLEYAUTOWORKSI was gonna ask what your day job was brother? Do you work for a supplier? I’m not asking for a company name and if you don’t want to say what you do then I understand that and respect it 100%, I’ve just been curious cause of your knowledge base you have
@1982MCI it's all good man I don't mind at all I have said many times on the channel I currently work at a Napa paint store so I have developed a decent knowledge of automotive paints as well as on the enthusiast DIY side of things I've been doing Rustoleum paint jobs with clear coat experimenting with different combinations for about 10 years and painting in general for about 20 yrs thanks for watching!!!
Paint turned out great. Just my opinion, the car needs a little more contrast. Maybe Stripes along the hood or an old school 80s graphics on the bottom of the doors/fenders.
John, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.. Don't worry about the neasayers. BTW the music is fine. You're not going to please everyone. I know you put in a lot of time, money and effort to make these videos. Great information! I’ve been messing around painting some vehicles with rustoleum and it’s great to see how others do it. One thing I do differently is use mineral spirits instead of acetone and a small amount of hardener. I feel like I get a more consistent and faster drying time and the fumes are much less harsh. I’d suggest giving it a try sometime and see what you think!
Thank you for this , I’ve got 1 or 2 gallons of rustoleum safety blue collecting dust from my job when we painted some handicap parking spots. Looks like I’m gonna have a pearl blue F 250.
A few months ago I found that upol clear for $30 on sale, I bought 6 gallons!. Then $33 for the slow harder (Florida). My results differ. I can handle it in less than 2 hours (I've done one). Then set it in the sun and I can cut it the next day. Also, found I had to turn the pressure way down to 18 psi and it seems to lay flatter.
I used rattle cans on my 84 Mazda b2000 going on two decades ago, I went to Big Lots and loaded up on Red Devil cherry red spray paint and disassemble the entire truck and did one piece at a time. It's still looking pretty good with the exceptions of a little bit of fade but I'm thinking it's about time to redo it. Rust-Oleum is definitely a better quality paint and it's longer drying time makes for a better look.
How long did you wait before applying the 1st coat of clear with the pearl? Also what PSI are you shooting the Rustoleum and the clear at? Thank you for your time God Bless 🙏🏽
28 psi and typically wait about 45 minutes to an hour till it's tacky to touch but not pulling paint off on your finger and you're good to thanks for watching

So you did 5 coats back to back with pearl then clear or 5 coats of clear back to back with pearl in the first 2?
Five coats of clear total all with pearl in it sorry for any confusion
SAND with 800 on the clear and reclear with 2 coats of speedokote smr 42 and it will look like a high end job
Can you go over the shop tools and simple fan/ventilation

A curious question: I'm assuming that the orange peal was contributed by the hot & humid weather conditions? Would a slower hardner and/or thinning of the clear help aviod it (less wet rudding and polishing)?
Yes very much so good point.... it was extremely humid when I painted everything was drying really quick and the hardener was a standard hardener typically I would use a slower hardener which I didn't have the option of using with this clear coat system. It was a spot panel clear, so it is designed to do small repairs, not overall paint jobs.
What would happen of you added a colorshift pearl to a rust-oleum matte base? Might be a fun experiment.
How long after base did u wait to clear
Wait till it's tacky to touch but not pulling paint off on your finger typically about 45 minutes to an hour in ideal temperature Thanks for watching
