It’s me again Alan from Ireland and I just rewatched this episode and you just answered my question perfectly. Great video and I should watch your videos without any distractions! Good job kind regards Alan
Watching tonight in my new AC Designs t-shirt! Thanks for helping those in need! Can"t wait for that next vid. That flat turbski is a real nice base coat, way better than the gloss.
I love that 2k clear. In my experience it does best with a few lighter coats finished with a heavy end coat, but the results are pretty amazing for a rattle can.
Fellow Western NC native here! Good work, I think that turned out amazing! I've tried paint projects like this in the past and never seem to get as nice of a result as you guys.
Awesome hope yall are well!! It's just a little pratice. I try to make this stuff as easy as I can, if you have any questions let me know. I love the mountains, my grand pa lived in Waynesville and had a cabin out in the country. I grew up there in the summer and vacations!
I did this back in 1975 on my motorcycle. I didn't sand after spraying the flat black. Waited (per directions) between coats for the 2 top coats of gloss clear. Hand painted Redish-Orange & Sunshine Yellow simple strips. You could not see where the surface of that black was as you can with gloss black, it looked like a black hole. Made the strips appear to be floating. 😡Harley in 1976 did my paint scheme on one of their stock bikes (the thieves). Anyway, no one was able to duplicate how I did that black for 12 years. _ 😉 _
Great video ! I really appreciate you making it easy to donate to help those affected so terribly by Helene. I am a struggling Florida man but my struggle doesn't compare to what they are facing. I purchased several shirts and will also pass those donation contacts you listed to my buddys. I deeply appreciate you brother. Keep up the great work!!
I have a 62 Mercury Comet S22. Presidential black is the color code. I was gonna leave it bare metal and 2k clear coat (matt) but seeing how the black looks.... I'll do the same on the Comet
Yeah I think it would look awesome black!!! I've had trouble with clearing bare metal, it flakes off eventually and if it gets a small chip it will start rusting!
Ended up doing a lot more body work to my car than initially planned and painted my car with turbo white and cleared with satin 2k and it looked fantastic at a fraction of the cost
I've used the 2k clear in a pinch and it works great. For smaller sections, be careful as it takes more time to flash between coats. I had some solvent pop and had to re-do a small panel. Looks great.
thats actually so wild, thanks for taking your time on these videos. im probably gonna paint my car with this technique cant wait to see the cut and buff vid
Being paint body man myself that looks good i like your idea about flat black if person going paint full size truck i would buy some clear off line buy and perches paint gun from harbor frieght would work best if someone has air compressor
I actually 3 stage painted my car with Rustoleum products and used 2k clear coat. it turned out pretty good I think, actually people that have seen it don’t believe it is spray paint 😂
I did a test panel with Rustoleum matte finish, went over that with a silver and candy green from napa and then the 2k clear. Looked great for awhile. After a few months it was full of cracks. Took the panel in to Napa to have them look at it and try to figure what happened. Once I mention everything was over a Rustoleum he knew the issue. He said the chemical(s) in the Rustoleum to don't mix with the automotive paint and clear causing the cracking. Hopefully yours turns out better. It's just my experience with it.
Yeah it's a gamble for sure, I've had pretty good luck so far but you never know, I think the less amout of material on there the better, thanks for the tip!!!!
They could definetly be correct, but i feel like it was the easiest way for a napa employee to push the blame on something other than their clear. Seems to be alot of people using catalyzed clear over rustoleum with no issues
I'm in SC and we were already aware of the unnatural amount of flooding going on in NC before the hurricane hit. They didn't warn us of what actually came, and we were out of power for over 8 days. We were very fortunate to have a generator with 4 outlets we had to ration off and us and family helping each other got by ok. But I don't ever want to be caught off guard like that again. So having known what happened to us, I can't imagine what it must be like for those parts of FL and NC that were hit so hard. Anyway, thanks for the video. I was always curious as to what that clear was like over flat as opposed to gloss. My experience is with residential painting and I think for my next project I'm gonna stick with single stage enamel. I know it's not sexy like urethane these days but it is very decent, thick tough paint that when it does fade or oxidize, you can just polish and buff it up again. I never had to have a car that absolutely gleams. It's too easy for a stray tree limb, door ding or parking lot buggy to ruin your day on that one.
Bed side, turned out nice, as is! Should, be glass, when you're done! I'd, buy one of your shirts, with your VW on it. I'm, a Ford guy but own air cooled VW's, also.
I finally understand why everyone goes for a shorted on these trucks, half the body work compared to the long bed😂 I guess I'm just gunna have to do the extra work, I like my long box
Ideally you would do the color and then clear when its just barely flashed. This will give you a polymer cross-link between the two coatings. I've done it this way on motorcycle parts and it works great.
I have used the 2k clear cans before and they are awesome!! They are more intended for smaller projects like mirrors or door handles, but you can absolutely use them on bigger ones like in this video it can just end up costing you more than if you just went and got a spray gun and bought it by the quart or gallon. With a gun you get a much thicker end result also on larger panels like this one. If you are using the flat 2k clear coat spray it the best you can because you can not cut and buff it at all!! It will become glossy if you do. So any run or trash is there to stay with the flat clear coat just so you know. The can says 48 hours after you mix the activator with it, but i have had it last up to a week before by putting it in the refrigerator, but that was pushing it and i would not recomend doing that if you can avoid it. Circumstances just called for it in my situation when i did it.
Anytime that you are going to clear over any color you want to use flat as the color or "base coat." Actual base coat automotive paint when you shoot it it dries flat or semi flat and the shine comes from the clear top coat. Think of it like a sponge, the flat is porise and the clear will bond to it extremely well. Gloss is like a coat of plastic that the top surface is smoth and difficult for the clear to adhere to. Also with gloss when you clear over it, the chemicals in the clear can reactivate the ones in the color and make it lift or wrinkle up bad. With flat it doesnt do that unless you really lay it on too thick or dont wait between coats for it flash off at all, but you have to really try to mess it up with the flat paint.
I wouldn’t use 1500 on that clear I think it’s too thin I’d just wet sand with 2000 then 3000 then cut and buff. I am curious how it holds up to 1500. I’ve used that exact clear on a bumper blend. It works great. It blends right in with the blending spray at the end. I was pretty happy with the texture and shine.
I’m just gonna say it let’s paint ole patches that flat black then load her up on the trailer and ship her to west Tennessee. Alright then! 😂enjoy your content. Have a good evening
Thanks for this im going with a second hand truck last guynplasti dipped the front grill and the bumpers. Turned out really poor but the trucks got a new motor so i want it to not look like the pos it is on the outside
A flat base coat will have great surface which the clear will stick very well too. All the wet sanding should be used during the build coat and clear coat to give it that high quality shine with no orange peel and be straight as glass. Wet sanding the clear coat is always the best way to make the best looking paint job. I don't care if you lay 4 coats of clear, you should always cut and buff after the body has had a full wet sanding.
Base Clear came out all the paint is flat so it will adhere. Why not invest in a paint gun and use cheaper paint. Generally if you want to clear get on it so they can melt together. Been painting since 1983. Put some dish soap in your wet sand water helps lubricate plus cleans. Be sure to rinse really well. Here at American Equuipment we are finishing the Jeepster 1948 Vortec version. Then on to building the 1957 Chevy Short bed into a 2004 All wheel drive 500 HP. Monster for the Colorado Mountain men.
I have sata jets and all the goodies, I m trying to help the guys that dont have all the compressors and stuff. I totally agree this spray paint stuff is alot harder to do lol. Thank you for the soap trick idea!!!
I've got CBR600RR that I just restored with new fairings, cheapest ones were flat black, I figured I could just paint my own decals, just wanna use gloss black on top the flat, worried about the edges of the gloss on top the flat lookin effed up. Winter is here now so guess we are wainting till spring.
You can get fast black rustoleum let it dry for a few days ,wet sand it lightly with 600 grit then get some matte spray max 2k clear and spraymax 2k gloss clear and get a great job. Spray one sheen one day then tape it up and the other sheen the next day as long as its dry!
I went to a local car show last month and sadly that spray can paint job looked better than some of the paintjobs on some of the cars i saw. They looked like they tried to stretch a single quart of basecoat and a single quart of clear coat and paint the entire car.
After you cut and buff the flat black show us how the gloss side is holding up. Also I think your new shirt needs a turbski and 2k can on it. Did you get parts for patches? I’m ready to see that thing moving again.
Will do, its nasty because I blew grass all over it lol, but as for the gloss it's still just as good. It may need to be re buffed because of me lol. I hope to just on patches this winter. I'm taking my surburban to the c10 fall revival in NC this weekend!!
Very jealous - here in the UK we get a few short weeks in Summer to spray outside - the rest of the year is either damp, rain, snow, hail, too cold ! I still spray from home but it is touch and go as to whether the paint stays on the car or just runs off it 😳
I really wish rusto-leum had a 2k can. In South Africa we have to import these cans and they work out to be so expensive due to tax and shipping. Works out to almost 100 dollars a can. 😢
I know youre outside but be careful with that 2k clear and taking off your respirator. That stuff is no joke in your lungs (and this is coming from a painter of 23years who loves to not wear his mask when spraying latex 😅)
I left you a message yesterday but forgot to ask you a couple of questions. Firstly, I can only buy Rustolium FLAT Red paint here in Ireland and I like the colour for my Land Rover Defender, so that’s not a problem. Secondly, the important question is if I spray the gloss clear coat will that make the FLAT just like a normal gloss paint finish? It sounds like a stupid question but I truly respect your opinion. Kind regards Alan from Ireland.
Thanks Alan for the question!! Yes if you shoot gloss clear over the flat she'll be good and shiny, never hesitate to ask questions that's how we learn, im still learning also!! Thanks buddy for the support I appreciate it!!!!

And you remind me of my uncle 🤫😜. God Bless You & your family!
But glad you popped back up on my feed, life's been in the way, and all these stupid hurricanes, haven't touched my projects. But DID get a new to ME 6hp 9scfm 20 gallon. Hoping it can spray my frame out! Got 2 it's of gloss smoke grey, sone acetone and got lost with the hardness and clear options . Any advice? Modified 2000 s10 chassis
Glad your back, these Hurricanes have been a pain, Im in NC .You should be good with spraying with that compressor, especially with like a help or a hte gun they don't use alot of pressure. As for the paint the hardner makes it shine better and last a little longer. Not sure on the clear, what brand of paint are you using, ill see if I can find some info on it for ya!! Thanks for watching!!!
My lord! This was a little hard to watch. So sporadic with the spray pattern, spraying so close, and so much at one time. It turned out pretty good. Imagine if would have taken your time!
Great video! Might've gave me some confidence to peel the vinyl wrap off my hood and do mine haha. What are the down sides spraying 2k over rusto enamel? Is it durability/longevity?
Cost effectiveness between buying a gallon and all the mixing supplies and regular gallon of clear comparison to all the spray cans it would take to do the whole truck
Well that spray Max is $20+ a can and it adds up really quick. A gallon of speedokote clear coat would end up cheaper if you were doing a whole car, that is if you have a compressor that will keep up with a spray gun.
I got a car that was sprayed with this 2k stuff. Removed all of it with a pressure whasher. Its a corvette , so its plastic. Maybe thats why? I dont know i never painted a thing.
You have to be careful with how good you prep it and always make sure to pop the button on the bottom that releases the hardner. I've heard of guys spraying the 2k and not catalizing it so it never hardens.
90℅.of.the job is prep and skill. You just don't want to do a job over.which is why guys use what they know, and you pay the premium for those products.
No as long as your not going over body filler or chips , your good. Now you can if you have some deep scratches. Now if I were using traditional base clear, I would probably seal it then base coat clear coat it.
Thank you very much well send that to the children's home in western NC!! As for the 2 xl I think there are a couple left, it will say if there instock on the website. Those are goin fast!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage Excellent! I will be looking for that one which means you got my sub. I also appreciate your reply. Thank you and keep up the awesome work.

Hahaha thanks, I'm starting to love them hahahaha
Cool video!!!
Thank you!!!!
Looks good for the money involved
Thank you!!!

You are an inspiration for this Gen X-er who is ready to nudge my father a bit more to letting me get my hands on our family 1946 Dodge BusinessMan Coupe restoration.
Grandfather purchased new, 3000 original miles, father only other title owner, garaged for EVER. I miss the weekend rides as a kid around the block in the 70's to keep engine & tires good...
And you remind me of my uncle 🤫😜.
God Bless You & your family!
Man thats gonna be a cool ride, glad to have you aboard, I'm a fellow gen X myself haha thanks for watching!!
Nice video sir. Liked n subscribed.
Thank you very much!!!!
Awesome. God Bless You, in Jesus Mighty Name. Love Your Videos. Thank You
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that. Hope you have a Blessed week!!!!!
2k spray max needs 15 minutes to gas-out between coats to avoid a milky haze from forming. fyi
The clarity of the top coat will be much better.
My lord! This was a little hard to watch. So sporadic with the spray pattern, spraying so close, and so much at one time. It turned out pretty good. Imagine if would have taken your time!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! Lot’s of info! Thanks again
Thanks for watching
Great video! Might've gave me some confidence to peel the vinyl wrap off my hood and do mine haha. What are the down sides spraying 2k over rusto enamel? Is it durability/longevity?
You got this!!! We painted the otherside probably 6 months ago and still looks great.
The gallon would be a little more but alot less work than the spray can forsure. If you have the ability to spray with a gun I'd go for it!!!
Man that turned out great!
Thank you, wait till I buff it!!!
No primer just wet sand over the old paint? Or did you prime it black first. Not sure if I missed something or not. Thanks!
No as long as your not going over body filler or chips , your good. Now you can if you have some deep scratches. Now if I were using traditional base clear, I would probably seal it then base coat clear coat it.
Dam looks good
Thank you!!!
I Just Subed , Thanks!!😁
Thank you very much!!!
So at the end of spraying the truck bed do you smell like clear? Would a guy wear a tyvek suit for this?
Yeah I have a paint suit for when I paint inside, but it's not to bad outside. I would suggest anyone else needs to suit up!
Big thanks from the UK . Great video.. Keep it up brother..
Thank you very much for the support!!!
Can you paint my 91 Chevy? lol... Great video!
Thanks for the offer but I'm covered up lol, thanks for watching!!!
The WHY project lives on.
That's for sure lol
I am surprised the 2k clear doesn't crinkle the base coat.
I am also, that's why I never tried it before, black majic I guess lol
Tryed to clear over flat black on my 4 wheeler racks and it made it not flat black and was gloss black
Yes it will, if you want it flat you have to use flat clear, next weeks video I'll be using the flat 2k clear on the gloss bed to do some effects!
Patches would be a nice shirt
I've thought about that!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you very much I'll send it to the disaster fund!!!
Perfect! Thank You. 📿
are rustoleum still making the turbo paint, i haven't seen it for sale anywhere for a couple years??
I buy it on Amazon or at hardware stores.
You think the white would be the same result?
I may try some white soon, I wish they had flat white turbo.
Here’s a little something till I order my shirts any 2xls
Since you asked I have a THING and 71 VERT so I’d like to see VWs. Oh I have a SUBURBAN as well
Thank you very much well send that to the children's home in western NC!! As for the 2 xl I think there are a couple left, it will say if there instock on the website. Those are goin fast!!!
Pretty sure they have a 2K matte as well.
Yes they do, I bought 4 cans to do a video soon on it!
@@ACDesignsGarage Excellent! I will be looking for that one which means you got my sub. I also appreciate your reply. Thank you and keep up the awesome work.
Have you tried the turbo can clear?
I haven't seen that yet!
Have you tried making a refillable turbo can
I need to figure that out!!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage It would be nice to be able to refill with custom colors
I sprayed the 2K clear over Rustoleum and the clear coat is peeling off after a little over a year. I think 2K is a very bad product. Doesn’t hold up.
Did you use 2x or 2k
@@ACDesignsGarage 2K rattle can with the button that you have to press to activate. Initially it looked very good.
I'm going to take a guess your close to hickory nc lol😂
Probably 30mins they have the best harborfreight other than north wilksboro lol
What font is on your thumbnail? Looks like Hot Wheels Flying Colors
I just found it it calledgyparody bold italic. I use Adobe Xpress to make my thumbnails that's where I go it!!
I had a bike that was gloss black and put matte clear so it became matte black
I need to try that out!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage maybe on that bike tank you mentioned
Can I put a 350 Chevy in a jeep cj 7 1983
I've heard of guys doing that!!
Can you put 2k clear over a lacquer base coat?
I need to try it on a test pannel, some of this stuff is just hit and miss, I may do a video on it.
@@ACDesignsGarage rustoleum has some nice colors in their custom color line but they are lacquer and I want a better clear then lacquer clear
Is that a 65 comet in the background?
Yes it is
@@ACDesignsGarage i have 2 of them. Don't see many of them around since it was a one year only body style.
Using glass cleaner to pre clean your working area? I think you and I would get along just fine, I use that shit on everything.
Hahahaha me to lol
Can you spray that over lacquer paint
I would try on a scrap piece, this stuff can be a gamble sometimes!!!
@@ACDesignsGarage I strayed it so far so good use Oreillys paint match then uk2 clear in a cam like you had
Anther question would spray ford argent spray paint over primer or black or a different color thanks
I like watching you where you located at
Thank you for watching, Im in middle NC
