    Great video.
    My oil pump quit on me in my '01 Tahoe 5.3
    I was hoping it was just the O-ring or a clogged pickup tube..so i dropped the pan and it was suprisingly VERY cleanfor having 342,000 miles!So..its the pump.
    I already got the harmonic ballancer bolt out. I just need to get the pullers and the pump kit/timing chain. With that many miles, i bet my chain is a streched as an old rubber band...lol
    ..but it actually ran very well befor the pump quit.
    Thanks again for the video.

      Any updates? I’ve got a an ‘06 Sierra 5.3 with 306k and I’m getting ready to do my timing chain (lifter tick and now a rattle that comes and goes). Considering putting a higher pressure oil pump as well and seeing this video and this comment is only reinforcing it

    • @lessthanzero8522
      @lessthanzero8522 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@videos-for-friends Yes..got the pump swapped and put in a new timing chain right after i made that comment back in late June. I used the Melling oil pump with the blue spring (cant remember part number at this time) and the Cloyes timing chain/gear set (again, cant remember the part number). I ordered everything from Amazon, even the Fel-Pro gasket set which included every gasket needed for the job. You HAVE to get a new harmonic balancer bolt, also. I rented the harmonic balancer puller and timing gear puller from Auto-Zone. From tear down to reassembly, it took me about 6-7 hours. My oil pressure never goes below 50 psi and at times on the highway, its at 70 psi.

      @@videos-for-friends right on! Hope it works out. Its really not a bad/hard job. I could have done it alot faster if i was JUST doing an oil pump/timing chain swap. But i pulled the oil pan to check for sludge and metal shavings. When my pump went bad, it just stopped pumping. No warning. So my first thought was clogged pickup tube. But, it was not clogged and the oil pan was super clean. Threw on a new gasket and reinstalled it. That was time consuming..the plastic air dams and engine crossmember had to come out to get the pan off.

    • @videos-for-friends
      @videos-for-friends ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lessthanzero8522 Yeahhh… we were gonna drop the pan but on the Sierra’s you need to unhook that same cross member and even the rack and pinion. I am happy I learned about these old LS’s and oil pumps. We decided against it since it still gets 40psi at idle, still doing timing and that Melling oil pump.

      @madmike_9343  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a really good question, I do it because it’s just the way my dad taught me, in theory the alignment shouldn’t change but I know that there are some engines that have designed the camshaft sprocket to be slightly offset so the same tooth isn’t hitting same tooth on the crank gear each time.

      You can not remove the pickup tube from the oil pump without dropping the oil pan. There is no clearance for any tool. There is no space to work the tool if you could manage to get one in there. I have done and have seen this job done many, many times. Not once was pump removed without dropping the pan.

    • @sjagain
      @sjagain ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeadler8239 I just did it. Take a 10mm 15-degree offset box wrench and grind the end down making it 1/2 as thick. Once you crack the bolt loose you don't need the wrench any longer. Use your pinky finger to turn the bolt. Before taking it all the way out tie a slipknot it some string and lasso the bolt so you can retrieve it if it falls into the pan. To install the bolt first grind the tab on the left side of the pickup tube flange...Spin the flange around to the left side of the pickup tube and bolt the tube down.

  • @454bigblock
    @454bigblock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First things first, u should have primed the new pump, shimed it and used the galley plug to prime it. Then finger tighten front cover fit the balancer correctly, not the way you did. You risk stripping the threads. Once the balancer is set you then tighten sump bolts first to pull the front plate down then torque others. Simple mistakes.

    30% of ls oil failure can come from the Cam plate, the cam plate seal if going bad can lead to other oiling issues, same with rear gasket, you should always change the cam plate, The factory Seal for the pickup is Blue or Red, so looks like someone installed the o ring wrong,
