Quick question...after you complete all phases can you give me a rough estimate on how much you could potentially have saved up from money earned during the apprenticeship given that you save most of it??
Does siu have 401k how is the pension?
Yes, currently no matching. And I can’t speak much for the pension plan as I haven’t dug to far into it. The more time you serve the better it gets from the old timers I’ve met about to get out the door.

I've noticed the different perks and freedom of each phase you've described in your videos sailor. My question is do you have to stay clean shaved for every phase and keep a military cut? How does that work?
While your at school for phase 1 and 3 you’ll have to be clean cut. On your phase 2 and 4 training ships you can do whatever you want (beards depend on type of vessel and company). 5th phase is the final phase. Wear what you want and grow your hair as long as you want wherever you want it.

New where was the internet 50 yrs ago. Great run down on the process of interring the Merchant Marines. After 10 years active Navy & 13 in the Reserve’s I still miss the sea. This was always an alternate I thought about if the civilian love hadn’t worked out. It’s too bad SIU doesn’t do a series like this. My question is What is the turn over rate in the Merchant Marines ?
What I've heard on the turn over rate is 6 out of 10 guys give up after 2 or 3 contracts usually because its not for them or they've found a "soul mate". And the long distance relationship and time apart back and fourth isn't for everyone.
I have 4 kids and my partner is a stay at home parent. I'm currently a truck driver and the sole person bringing in the bill money. I'm making 65k a year right now, I need to know if I can maintain my households flow of income ($1400 monthly to bills) while I'm in the program. Is it possible?
Not without setting some aside for help for at least 6 months. First phase is 3 months of no money coming in. 2nd phase (3 months) might cover the $1400 with $0 left over. Then after that it’ll be a stroll in the park.

Yes. I’ve known a few guys that were residents and awaiting their citizenship and still sailing.

You won't know until you get out on a ship. Don't give up. The SIU Apprenticeship program is the best debt free program with a promising job at the end I've ever heard of, been part of, and seen the debt free results in the end. No school loans hanging over my head.

I’ve spoke about in multiple videos. Long hair is acceptable on most all commercial ships. Beards are never allowed on Tankers and as for other ships it matters what the captain/chief mate will accept. I haven’t had any issues yet because my Chinese beard is so scarce I’m still able to prove a good seal on the SCBA mask.
During phase two and 4 can you do more than 120 days?
Phase 2 you need a minimum of 90 days. I wouldn’t suggest doing more if you don’t have to because phase 2 is “apprentice wages” Phase 4 is minimum of 120 days and I would only suggest doing more depending on when your phase 5 class is scheduled. Otherwise get back to phase 5 as fast as you can because once your done with the program you’ll make $1k+ more a month than what you make in your 4th phase ship.

When you go into the apprenticeship you’ll stay in the “barracks”. It’s in the same building as the hotel but it’s not a hotel. Roughly 20 bunk beds to each dorm room (barracks). The place was recently renovated so the showers are all separate and you have privacy unlike when I was there it was a old 5 shower head gym set up. You don’t have to pay. You’re not allowed to sleep in the “hotel” side until your 5th phase and even then you don’t have to pay as long as your taking classes.

My boyfriend just started this program. I watched all your videos but just want to clarify. The only time he will be able to come home is after phase 3? Also, would I ever be able to go visit him up there?
He’ll be home after phase 2 for anywhere to 2 weeks to a month. Then again after phase 3 for same amount of time. And then phase 4 the same amount of time.. anywhere between 2 weeks to a month. And I believe it’s the second to last Sunday of every month visitors are welcome. Pg13 only... there was multiple guys that were kicked out of the program trying to sneak away with their loved ones to do who knows whaaattt. So just be aware.
Would you recommend going to a maritime academy or join the SIU?
Either/Or ..mattering on your situation. Do you want to take out $75-90k in student loans for a 2/3 year officer academy? If your good with your money it can be payed off within 3-5 years of consistent sailing. Or do you want the schooling for free and climb the hawsepipe making money for 5 years to get your sea time and become and officer anyways with no student loans. Have you ever sailed? Do you even know if you’ll like it?

I do not pay for the training. And I do not get payed for the training. Unless my payment is the certifications given to me after the training. The classes anywhere else would cost a couple hundred dollars per class.

Have you seen may 43 year olds come through the program?
When I was there at least %30 of the apprentices were ABOVE age 45. It’s never to late to change a career or start a new one.

Yes. Mattering on how much studying you want to get done. You can’t drink alcohol or leave the campus in phase 1 or 3. Class gets out 4. Dinners at 5. Lights get turned off in the barracks at 10.
two questions bro? so phase four your on a ship for 120 days. what happens right after you finish being on the ship? like do u go home or do u go right back to the school? 2nd question. how do u get paid? cash check or can u get direct deposit?
After phase 4 the company you’ve finished your contract with will fly you home. It’s your responsibility to contact the school and provide them with whatever paperwork is next. (120 day discharge paperwork). I’d suggest getting in the next available class you can. From completion of phase 3 you have 1 year to complete phase 4 and return for phase 5. If your not back within a year you’ll have to retake phase 3 classes before phase 5.
Cash/check/ direct deposit. It’s your money how do you want it? I don’t think you want to carry thousands of dollars in cash on you traveling but it’s your choice.

I just have One question I’m confused on how long does this program take Because I was watching one girl talk about her experience at Piney point and she said the program took four months But then I heard you say a year I thought.
14 months minimum if you’re able to get in class, on a training ship, and back in class with no time at home in between.
yo what if you dont have money for all the traveling? like what if after 3rd phase and 4th phase you dont want to go home. can you stay at the school?
@james andrews. If you’ve watched the other videos of the phases I believe I mention not blowing all your money from phase 2/4. You’ll have money to travel, and no you can’t stay at the school between the phases. After you’ve completed the program you can stay at the hotel in the school as a guest but not while your going through the program. This messed a lot of people up that entered the program after ending lease agreements, they were either forced home to their parents or couch surfed amongst friends.
