if everyone started with 3 shrooms like how it is for time trials i think the races would be slightly more interesting, you could decide whether to shroom at the start to be first to the coins or whether to hold your shrooms for shortcuts and use that to catch up. It is ironic that no items actually makes the game LESS skill based even if there are no rng elements anymore
I actually disagree, I'd say itemless makes the game entirely skill-based, but also removes a LOT of the strategy too, which I guess is technically part of skill tbh

This game mode may not be fun to play but it certainly is interesting to be able to study your lines and see where I go wrong when I’m driving. Like I know I can do that with your regular videos and streams but your line goes interrupted when you get hit by an item that another player threw.

When I'm not sure how much play time I'll get before something comes up with the kids, I play VS Races (4 random courses, hard CPU, all items) Good way to practice, no waiting, still a fair bit of action. Time trial is also great for that, I just prefer the track variety in my sessions.
Oh god, this is giving me flashbacks to when we tried this mode in a Discord froom once - it was miserable. I definitely prefer playing with items, even if it means I get mario karted
I think a better skill based game mode is to just get rid of any "undodgable" items. Red Shell, Shock, and Boo are the worst offenders. Blue can arguably stay because you can drop out, horn, or shroom dodge them. (Which is easier when you don't lose your defense to redshells or a boo) You can still hit people out, but you'll have to aim. And speed items still exist for shortcuts and comebacks.
I wonder, since there's no items if the high speed builds are more viable (especially on tracks like WiiBow or anything without a lot of opportunities for mini turbos) 🤔
Yeah, Mario Kart without items is like a mustard sandwich. It is just missing the extra content to make it tasty! I don't think I've ever played Mario Kart without items. It doesn't really look fun. Once someone gets a big enough lead, the race is all over. You need items to even the playing field a bit.
Without items it's not really skill based because it's basically whoever starts in first stays in first also bagging isn't really luck based unless it's a super frontrunning track
From my experience, this is the case if there’s COINS. With coins, first place just usually STAYS in first, because he keeps snagging them, while 2nd and 3rd place are basically helpless as 1st increases the gap. I experienced this first hand where I was playing competitively, and I could never catch the guy in front because he wasn’t leaving me any coins. Once we turned OFF coins, then I started winning the majority of the races since he no longer had a massive front running advantage.
Well theoretically the strat when you're in last is to outspeed 1st place with your 5 coins, as you would not have to take the coin route for a while, so you just take better lines than 1st and you'll likely pass them as they go for coins. Drafts can be a huge factor too. But in the end competitively it would just be a rather sad and boring mode as once you get to 1st by one way or the other, not just by starting in 1st, nothing is really stopping you, just don't screw up and let your 10 coins collected well in advance do the rest.

You can just do VS mode with random tracks on, you have to wait 1minute after each race online

It depends on the track, but yoshi scooty/biddy is best overall because you are effectively playing time trials
