Thanks to the WI DNR and all the people who participate in this sport, we are able to maintain the largest population of lake sturgeon in the world, right here in Lake Winnebago. Just like any other type of hunting or fishing there are strict rules and bag limits to make sure the population stays in balance. Though it may seem counterintuitive, harvesting these fish is very important for the conservation of the animals we love!
We usually pay someone to filet them and smoke them! There are a few locals who provide their services each year. Good thing because we wouldn't even know where to start!

What are your thoughts on the idea of sturgeon spearers being as rare as the sturgeons themselves? With this being one of the last places where you can hunt them, do you feel like it would be worth fighting for the ability to continue hunting them or if/when the time comes that sturgeon spearing is completely banned, would you agree with the reasoning behind the ban and adapt your skills into a new endeavor?
That is a great question! I think the Wisconsin DNR does a great job of managing the sturgeon population so I am hopeful that we will be able to do this forever. Whether I would agree with a ban on sturgeon spearing would depend on the reasoning. If it was banned simply because people don't want us to spear them anymore, I would have a problem with that. However, if the population got low enough that we would be putting their existence in danger by continuing to spear them then I would be the first person advocating for the ban. Too many people forget that hunting and fishing is about the conservation of a resource. When people get greedy and take more than they should that is when we start to see declining populations and sometimes even extinction which ends our ability to enjoy the animals and enjoy hunting them as well. If the day ever comes when we have to decide between continuing to spear sturgeon and wiping out the population or banning sturgeon spearing to protect the fish, any true sportsmen would advocate to protect the fish at all costs.

Unfortunately, there are very strict laws in place to prevent people from selling or trading sturgeon eggs so we are not allowed to do that! I’m sure there are licensed vendors out there who would be able to help you out though!

Nice vid!! I live in fondy and only where those places are. Wendts on the lake is amazing! And muches are known for their sturgeon spearing. I remember when they would bring smoked sturgeon to school for snack I really wanna go spearing but never had the chance...maybe 1 day
Wow you speared one on the camera I hope they get banned if you can't see the fish well the fish wins. If you spear one and it's 34in are you taking it up to the dnr and telling them what you did yeah I bet not you millennials ruin the sport

We put things on the bottom of the lake to act as a backdrop so you can see a fish better when it swims through the hole!
That fish is not 42 inches 11 pounds

Which ones specifically? The ones we speared all on the same day were all 40+ years old!
