As a commercial grouper hook and line and spearfisherman, this was awesome to watch. Nice fish! This looks a lot more relaxing than grouper fishing. My only thought about doing it differently was I’d hate to have the gaffs y’all have. I’d want a gaff that was about 4 to 5 feet long with a three inch double bevel hook from sea striker or aftco. They are a lot easier to manipulate than what you have there and would make landing the fish a whole lot easier and a more sure thing. We gaff almost every fish we catch. Great video.
Such a great success of over 95 years of conservation and careful, sustainable harvest has produced such lunkers in Winnebago and some other lakes like Poygan. I once accidentally caught a sturgeon on Poygan and brought it to the boat (after quite the fight) so we could control it for hook removal. Thing was as long as our boat. It felt like wet sandpaper and its head was hard as wood. They are amazing creatures. Did you know that you can volunteer to help watch the sturgeon during the spawning run? Protection against poachers and getting to see the fish up close and personal in places like the Wolf River!

It has always amazed me that the State of WI allows this, but won't allow a fishing catch and release season for them on Winnebago. They are great sport fish!
@@Madtown.Outdoors No, not if the anglers are using the proper gear and handling. Our season here in MN is June -March. There have been no issues at all with hooking mortality.

You cut the ice at an angle so when sitting in the shack you have a better view beyond the edges of the hole and so you aren't staring at a wall of ice :). Final weekend of 2019 season coming up..... come on sturgeon! :)
So I’ve never done this before, so I’m in no real position to say anything. But when you’re cutting the ice with the chainsaw, is standing on the square the best tactic?
I watched a documentary on this not to long ago it seems to be awesome. You fellas are lucky to get to do this I hope it goes for years to come. Good luck next year.

There's tens of thousands of sturgeon in the Winnebago system. So far in 2019 less than 500 have been harvested by spearing. Here are the regulations from the DNR dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/sturgeon/sturgeonlakewinnebago.html
