  • Is having a vineyard a good investment? How much does it cost and how to make any money?
Starting a vineyard is not a passive form of income. It does mean some time and effort to start it and also to keep it going. However, it need not be a chore, but a profitable pastime.
Anyway, even if you have never thought of this as an idea, you can sit back and see what I have done so far. - no idea if it will work, but we are at least having fun as we do it!!
So far I have spent about £3500 to get to the second year. You will only get grapes from the second year onwards, but budget a proper harvest from year 3 onwards.
A full description of how I have gone about doing this vineyard can be found at the following link which is also a link to my other 'My Country Life' channel.
    • Vineyard
Anyway, in this description, I have listed out all the costs that I have incurred to get our vineyard into its second year. The following costs are for 11 rows of 27 vines totally 297 vines altogether. You can pro rata the figure accordingly
Land - Included as part of our house, but budget about £10,000/acre
Ploughing, harrowing and seeding an acre of field £300 (local farmer)
Stakes @ £6 ( aside from 1 needed at each end, you need one for every 4 vines)
    Ground anchors @£4.30
End stake anchor braided wire 3mm £0.31 per metre (8 metres needed per row)
shackles 8mm £0.22 each (2 required per row)
eyelets £0.09 each (2 needed per row)
crimps (ferrules) £0.05 (2 needed per row)
    Chains £43/100
    Stakes for vine (metal) £56/100
    wire tensioners £46/100
    wire tensioner tool £63
Medium sized Gripples £14.90 for 20
    2mm Galvanised Wire £45.70
Paper coated ties for tying vines £5.85/1000
    Rabbit guards for vines £23/100
all of the above are ex VAT
Vines - Bacchus variety on a SO4 Root stock £2.35 (I ordered 300), you can order in groups of 25, prices vary from £2.95 to £2.05. No vat on vines.
Extras - perimeter fencing to keep deer out. 1 Acre in total.
    Rabbit netting around perimeter
    Suppliers:

Vigo ltd for ground anchors, gripples, tools,
Evans Farm supplies Hereford - Stakes and creosote (these available widely across the UK)

Before starting an endeavor like this, one should do more research to first know what you are going to sell and how you will access the market. If you make it, they won't just come. You gotta sell it.
Vineyards are like swimming pools. A lot of maintenance and they can detract from value for those that don't want one when shopping for a house.
With that being said, sometimes just wanting one is justification enough, just so long as one can afford to lose money.
Starting smaller to gain experience would be my recommendation for someone contemplating this endeavor.

Hope it does well! Interesting how the perception of owning a little vineyard varies between countries, quite a dream for many Brits - but in Portugal where I have family, there are literally hundreds left abandoned. I miss the early morning starts picking the Touriga grapes - not to mention picnic under the shade of the fig trees.

      Do people rent them?

@@MsAntz1979I would think many owners would be delighted to rent their vineyards - rather than see them become overgrown.

Why is it always about money? You should be doing it because you are interested and with a passion.

Barn 30k, trackor 25k, Implements for tractor 1k each, Posts 10 to 20 dollars each, deep well 8k, Piping to run water to entire field 5k, in USA 6 to 7 dollars per vine for bulk price. This is just scratching the surface and land is getting more expensive. UGA estimates average price to start a vineyard is 2 million.

I have a small sub compact tractor that I use all over the place. It's a Kubota B1750 and had a mower deck underneath it. I found out on eBay. Beforehand I was going up and down with a push mower and it took forever!

You haven't included the cost of labour. Unless you attribute no value to your own labour, or unless you have a supply of slaves (the morals of which may be questionable) labour will probably be your highest cost.
