How to apply for Lasting Power of Attorney uk (& why it's a good idea)

- To apply for Lasting Power of Attorney in the UK is probably one of the best things you will ever do - but how and why?
If you die, you can have a will to decide where your estate will go. Even if you die without a will, your estate passes to people in a very prescribed way.
However it gets complicated if you are incapacitated for any reason but yet bills and decisions still need to be made. If you are lying in a hospital bed, in a coma or nursing home then who makes these decisions. Well in the UK, you can take out a Lasting power of Attorney or LPA that says who can take financial and health decisions on your behalf.
You can get a solicitor to do this for you, or if you want you can do it yourself through the governments LPA portal which can be found here:

You can return to the form filling at any stage and the fee is £82 for a Financial LPA and £82 for a Health LPA.
The process is fairly straightforward, but the governments website does explain everything in some detail. As with everything financial, if you are unsure then speak to someone who does. This could be a financial advisor or a solicitor who can also do all the paperwork for you too.
You may never need to use an LPA, but if you do, then you will be very pleased that you took some time to take one out now. Treat it as an inexpensive insurance policy that will mean that life continues when there's a hiccup in the road.

Hi, love the video :-) My husband and I took out both LPA many years ago, but after watching your video did not realise that it had to be registered I thought once done and acknowledged by the Public Guardian, it was done and sealed. Thank you for this vital bit of information I look into registering both my and my husband's LPA as well as informing those who I assisted in doing their LPA,

Great video! My mother is going to make both types of LPA, with me as the attorney in both cases. However, I live outside the UK (Austria). Could this cause any problems? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give :-)
So once registered, who can see the LPA online and what exactly is visible, is it a scan or a computer transcript of what was on the forms?
If you don’t have an LPA and you become incapacitated, the the Local Authority can step in and use your assets in your best interests. This is probably better than an LPA because, as we all know, the Government knows best!

It’s not a good thing (in my opinion) don’t do it! You’ll be drawn into hours and hours of unpaid phone calls, decision making and aggrieved conversations with your parent when you have to make a decision they don’t like. Do you really want that?

If any of your parents ask you to be power of attorney it’s not a good thing (in my opinion) don’t do it! What if your realatives want to take your house and money off you when theirs nothing wrong with you
