Wow - I walked past this scene most workdays between 2004 and 2011 (I worked at KB Import/Export located junction of North Street and Broughton Street a few hundred metres further up Red Bank - Red Bank eventually becomes North Street). I remember reading about how Friedrich Engels, who resided in these parts circa 1840's (maybe he drank in the Flower Pot Inn or its predecessor?), described the River Irk as an open sewer. The Irk runs under Redbank approx. 250 metres (towards the City Centre/Corporation St) from the scene pictured here, at the point where Redbank passes under a very low bridge accommodating the rail lines emanating from Manchester Victoria.
