I used to walk by every day when I went to high school in city then when l went to work for British rail got off train at London rd

I remember it being a fishing tackle shop. The year when it changed in 1972 doesn't seem quite right because I went to Manchester with a friend so I'd have been 18 when I started going in pubs, that would be 1973. We went in a nearby pub, I guess it was Sinclair's Oyster Bar. I remember that area was called Shambles Square.

Wow - I walked past this scene most workdays between 2004 and 2011 (I worked at KB Import/Export located junction of North Street and Broughton Street a few hundred metres further up Red Bank - Red Bank eventually becomes North Street). I remember reading about how Friedrich Engels, who resided in these parts circa 1840's (maybe he drank in the Flower Pot Inn or its predecessor?), described the River Irk as an open sewer. The Irk runs under Redbank approx. 250 metres (towards the City Centre/Corporation St) from the scene pictured here, at the point where Redbank passes under a very low bridge accommodating the rail lines emanating from Manchester Victoria.

we used to get our fresh sea tripe from here, every wednesday morning

I think that this is No.9 dock. I sailed from there many times, the boats berthed there were mostly deep sea trips.

I worked in this area for a short time and would walk at lunchtime all around the local area so this is an area I got to know well along the tow paths, under railway arches and through the parks it is a nice area though could change a little at night and squealing tyres could often be heard.

Nice. What is that in the foreground of the 1925 pic, where the front of Merseyway now stands,it looks like railway lines, I presume a Tram Depot as Stockport already had a main railway station over the other side of Wellington Road.

The "Paramount" Odeon was a fantastic cinema, especially while it remained a single screen venue. Odeon top management seemed determined to be shot of it (and the nearby Gaumont) by largely ceasing using them for the top big films. Now just another monstrous block.

Thanks for putting this together and posting it. Even though it's a bit depressing! I'm living in Perth WA and even though Perth never got bombed, onky a small fraction of the nice old buildings remain. Unfortunately at one stage, Perth was trying very hard to look like Manchester. Fremantle however has kept more of its old buildings and still has a soul.

Wow drive up here everyday, more development on the bank side going on now…. Slowly slowly the old and dilapidated is being replaced as we dpeak
