    I feel like “John” saw an opportunity to fix the issues he had with Brandon and acted on it. I also feel that due to his level of intoxication John couldn’t think of a story to tell police but instead called friends. It may not have been premeditated but it was a crime of opportunity

    I went out and partied a lot in my 20s, but did have a couple of rules:
    1. If we came together, we're going home together.
    2. No strangers in our car and no getting into a stranger's car.
    3. Get all the phone numbers you want. You can call when you're sober.
    No matter how much we drank. No matter how late it was. Even if we got into an argument. These were the rules that me and my group of friends followed.

      Yeah, I was a real scene kid back in the day, and my closest friends and I always followed pretty similar rules. No splitting up; at the very least, see each other off in cabs. And if someone gets in trouble, the most sober person in the group is sticking with them and making sure they're okay. I was an ER babysitter for friends with broken bones or in need of stitches after mishaps on a wild night out more than once, and I never minded because I knew they'd do the same for me. I never needed it, but they've helped me out in so many ways since!

    It sort of says something about a father who will hire a party bus and open tabs at multiple bars for unlimited drinking but won’t hire a ‘bus’ to make sure the young adults make it to a safe place, doesn’t it?! How irresponsible!!

    • @cynthiahusband9496
      @cynthiahusband9496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe in Pa if you get into a car accident and you are coming home from a house party not sure if this would fall into this kind of category since I guess in my option that the father if no one else should be responsible and would get charged with something. I really believe “John” pushed him and possibly went back 2 minutes later to make sure he fell all the way down to the river and possibly into the river. When he ran away the first time I think it was because he was afraid possibly of being heard then the 2nd time is when he wanted to be sure he was in the water. If “John” was a good person and knew he didn’t know how to swim he should have tried to help him and get him out of the water and not just run away. If you have nothing to hide you should call the police

    Weirdly enough, we had a similar story in my area (Pittsburgh) that happened literally _one month_ after what happened to Brandon. A girl from my high school had a younger brother who worked at this big boat that takes people up and down the river. A bunch of the employees had gone out drinking and ended up going back to one of the boats after hours. Her brother ended up falling into the river and drowning.
    Everybody there said he had jumped, but his family have always said that couldn't be true because he didn't even know how to swim, and that he was actually afraid of the water like that so he would've never done that to begin with. The surveillance video (according to the news stations who saw it) showed him trying to get back up onto the dock and 2 other employees trying to help, but then one of them ran away to the office (presumably to call for help) and a minute or so later the other one ended up letting him go, where he immediately went under the water and drowned. The video also showed some of the employees fleeing before emergency services could get there.
    Hearing Brandon's story just reminded me so much of that, and then when I looked it up just now to see when it was I was really surprised to see that it was in July of 2014, about a month after Brandon drowned. (You can just Google "Gateway Clipper Fleet drowning" if anybody's interested in reading about that case too)

    All those 'duty to...' laws sound so fricking complicated. Here in europe most countries have this one simple rule Brandons family is pushing for. If you see someone in trouble, needing help, you are supposed to AT LEAST call police or an ambulance. You are encouraged to do CPR if you know how to do it and you are legally protected if your attempts at helping someone may cause damadge, like breaking a rib during CPR, because if the persons heart is not beating and they are not breathing, a broken rib is the least of their concerns.
    But again, you don't have to help in that way if you are feeling uncomfortable or it is dangerous to do so (always make sure YOU are safe first ie do not try to run across a highway or something in order to help someone) BUT you are obliged to call for professional help.

    • @cynthiahusband9496
      @cynthiahusband9496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We have something similar in Pennsylvania we have to call for help, we have to do CPR if we are certified because if we don’t we can get charged if something happens and he could have been saved. But if you’re not certified and you intervene and crack a rib or something you are supposed to be safe from charges under the Good Samaritan law

      I just don't understand how you can see someone falling to their death and do nothing about it. Not only that but John also ran away like 5 seconds later. If the video is not tempered with, I don't think he even had the time to yell out Brandon's name. I simply cannot comprehend why he would just leave him there. Unless he was actually hoping for Brandon to have died there and he waited so long to call the police to make sure he was in fact dead.

    It would make people more inclined to help. Here in central FL there was a house party down my road and some drama went down. Two dudes jumped this guy, for why has always been up in the air. He hit a coffee table or something and got knocked out, so they dragged him out of the house and left him in the driveway. Only like one girl checked on him, and it was apparently so bad, blood down the driveway, that her boyfriend was like, "we need to get tf outta dodge." and a bunch of other people left, scared that he wasn't just knocked out. After the party they loaded him into the back of a truck, went to a gas station, filled up some gas cans - took him out to the woods and set his body on fire. They *THOUGHT* he was dead. They burned him alive. No one called, no one offered to just take him home or drop him off anonymously to the hospital. Lot of people only talked when they though they were facing repercussions(rightfully) for dipping out or not even anonymously calling. RIP AARON DOTY

    I have the distinct feeling that what may have happened is, Brandon walked/ran towards the woods because he thought he was going to get sick and didn't want to do so on a public street/sidewalk, and that perhaps while bent over, John pushed him. To me that's the only thing that makes sense as to why he would run away that fast. He would then have likely come back for a minute to see that he did in fact get pushed far enough that he was unable to be seen. At that point John ran to that gas station, called the taxi, and went home so that he could claim he didn't know what happened. I would bet anything that's similar to what went down. I think John had motive, he didn't call the cops and instead went home to bed (which no one in their right mind would do if their friend just "fell" and it was an accident). There's absolutely no reason he couldn't have called the police to get him rescued unless he WANTED that to happen. It's the only thing that makes sense. And would explain him running away as far and quickly as he could and going back to that house. He wanted Brandon to be lost and I bet when he came back to the scene the next day and spent two hours there before calling police he was checking to see if there was any evidence he could've left behind before actually calling the police. If you ask me, it all adds up. Would also make sense as to why his story kept changing, and the fact that "someone" said they were responsible. I think it's a likely scenario as to what happened. 🧐

I couldn't live with that in my conscience. I swear ppl these days are just heartless. GOD bless Brandon's sweet family! So sorry for their loss and still not having closure or "justice" in some way. I was under the impression that "John" could be a POC too, and therefore be afraid to call the police and be accused wrongly of murder, but that's definitely not the case. None of the other people that attended the party are POC.
      This makes me think that either "John" acted by impulse and pushed Brandon, or he lured Brandon there with the intention of pushing him into the river.
      Either way, this is very sad for Brandon's family and I hope they get justice for him.

      I fully agree with you. The first thing I thought of when he ran away was “did you just push him over?” That’s the ONLY thing that makes sense in my mind. If he just “fell over” why didn’t you call the police/ambulance right away so they could possibly rescue him? Because he didn’t want him to be rescued. He was probably hoping for brain trauma so it would look like he fell and not been pushed!! So very sad.

    I feel so terrible about this! Brandon’s family must be hurting immensely!
    That said, I feel like everyone is being a little hard on his friend. I feel it may be misplaced frustration. Perhaps the friend wasn’t as drunk as Brandon, but there is still no way to surmise how intoxicated he was or was not. As far as calling a cab, etc. in my youth I witnessed extremely inebriated friends do all kinds of things; there is really no telling what a drunk person should or should not be able to do. Also, it appears that early on the friend was the only one who even bothered to try to help. Finally, is anybody really surprised that when something happens involving two young and really drunk (and possibly high, who knows?) black males, one of them is possibly wary or afraid to call the police initially? In some ways, with regard to the current climate concerning race and the police, we are asking to have things both ways…trust the police sometimes, but not others; unfortunately, it’s up to you to decide when that time is.
    Frankly, I think the real culprit is the birthday boy’s father’s extremely terrible judgment!
    Still, I can’t tell you how much sympathy I have for Brandon’s family!

    • @shaestewart5261
      @shaestewart5261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      One more way we’re asking to have it two ways that I forgot to mention is the following:
      With all due respect to the victim, we are allowing him to be as inebriated as possible, under the circumstances, even no one really knows the truth of the situation. Nobody questions that his actions were most likely due to extreme intoxication. However, we’re not allowing the friend the same level playing surface, but automatically assuming he wasn’t that drunk or wasn’t as drunk as Brandon, when we don’t really know how drunk he was. I feel that’s not exactly fair.

    • @kecrn4132
      @kecrn4132 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think there was just too many things that he was able to do that were very clear headed, but he somehow was so drunk he forgot about his friend “falling”…. Seems too convenient! And then his constantly changing stories….

    • @shaestewart5261
      @shaestewart5261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Your comments are well taken.
      John may have had the taxi number in his phone, maybe the gas station attendant called for him; we don’t know how difficult it was for the cab driver to find the destination…they may have driven around a bit while John tried to find where to go. Also, nobody seems to dispute that John drank and was probably drunk, though not as drunk as Brandon. I guess in this case, because there are so many unknowns, I have a hard time putting the majority of the responsibility on one drunk young person to take on the responsibility of knowing what to do or how to help another drunk young person.
      However, I also wonder if John may have been fearful to call the police fearing he may get blamed for hurting Brandon. This happened to a small degree anyway. Basically, I feel there are just too many unknowns regarding the young men. However, we do know that the birthday boy’s father acted pretty irresponsibly and had zero forethought about how a bunch of open tabs and drunk young people may end up in tragedy. As of yet, I haven’t heard anything from or about the dad.
      Again, I appreciate your thoughtful response.

    • @AstronautCity
      @AstronautCity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      one of my first thoughts was that they were both two inebriated young Black males, and calling the police was not an option John thought was safe, especially if his friend is black out drunk and potentially unpredictable. Not saying his friend ISN'T guilty but it's definitely something to take into consideration.

    I'm from Lansing and unfortunately, this kind of stuff happens all of the time. A lot of people go into the Grand River and never come out. Or they go in and don't make it out for a while. Multiple bodies are pulled from that river every year. It's completely awful and no excuse in this case. Just a bit of information.

    I think "John" absolutely pushed him, I'm even willing to bet that Jon led him to the street and dead end where he was pushed by telling Brandon which direction to go. Unfortunately, unless John makes a confession to police (which will never happen) there will never be a conviction. There's not enough evidence.

    As someone who has partied downtown Lansing years ago, I can tell you that a lot of places down there are walkable, but they're always just a littleee bit further away than they seem when you start walking. If you're absolutely inebriated and alone, there's no way you'd be able to find your way home. Not to mention the Grand River is unexpectedly vicious. It swings all the way over to Grand Rapids where I'm from and so many people die in the river every year. It's terribly sad. I'm so sorry for Brandon's family and friends. I am so very sorry that this happened, my heart goes out to Brandon’s family. And I hope that there isn’t any criticism of Brandon going out and drinking too much, how many people at his age have not ever done something like that? I’m just devastated that nobody called for help, nobody stood up and did the right thing. I know it isn’t easy, but I also know that I have a 21-year-old son and there have been times where he has been OK by the grace of God, and there have been times where a friend has done the right thing. I won’t go into it because it’s his story and not mine, but I am grateful every day for young people who do speak up and do call for help. Please, do the right thing. It can be anonymous! But just don’t leave people alone if your gut is telling you not to do so. Please! 🙏🏻Danelle, amazing job as always. Thank you for caring so much. ❤️

    I think John's intentions were good and Brandon likely was refusing to go with John so he followed him which was more than a lot of people would do. I think he fell in the river and John was drunk and panicked and/or possibly blacked out at that point. I've experienced blacking out when drunk at the exact moment that something stressful occurred. Then he remembered bits and pieces and wanted to call for help but wasn't entirely honest because he was afraid. A tragic alcohol induced accident with a bit of misleading the police when it was already too late.

I was one of the older students in my class and I asked “What happened to common sense and doing the right thing?” Unfortunately my answer was that there are many things to consider before doing the right thing. I hope we get National Duties to Act laws passed based on doing the right thing and not holding those liable who just want to help.

There are a million towns where people leave their doors unlocked etc. I’ve lived in several big cities and you should be aware of your surroundings but you can live there safely. something i thought about that i haven’t seen anyone else comment on was the purpose of “john” running to the intersection. i thought originally it made sense because he would be able to see the street signs when prior he was too far at the end of the road. but that doesn’t line up with him being unable to give his location. i don’t understand his actions after that unless he just wanted to get away for some reason. i feel like either way if it was intentional, he left that scene knowing brandon would be in imminent danger if he failed to assist him and those case needs to set precedence for an act that prevents these situations from happening. idk why john left but it must have been important enough to cost brandon’s life and that should never be the case.

    I remember this story. I feel there was a scuffle/argument and he fell down the hill, im not sure it was intentional but the scuffle caused it possibly.

    Unfortunately I can say, as a recovering alcoholic( sober 1 year) you can do SO MUCH black out drunk that you don’t remember at all. You can say things and do things that would make people think you aren’t that intoxicated. I don’t think his friend had malicious intent and did what he could.

      Congratulations on your 1 year of sobriety!! I'm so proud of you! Especially with alcohol as it is legal & everywhere you turn! It's celebrated & boasted about. I've watched 2 ppl die of cirrhosis of the liver & it's the most devastating death you can imagine. And let's not talk about all of the alcohol related crimes/deaths that occur: dui, vehicular homicide, domestic violence, bar fights, drownings, alcohol poisoning, binge drinking, etc etc. Ppl place such a stigma on drug addicts yet Alcohol is so deadly in so many ways but it's legal! The irresponsibility of that father to have open bars at every bar in town is a disgrace! I'm sorry I just went off on a tangent! My point is I want you to know that I know it has to be incredibly challenging for you when alcohol is literally everywhere & accepted! Take care & I wish you well 💓💯

    There's a lot of if's and buts. This could also happen even if he had his close friends. What I believe is live in the moment. I resigned this week to start my own business. My brother said I will never make it and my answer was that I don't want to die knowing I never tried. Same here. It are suspicious the way he died. I think his business partner could have pushed him in the water and Brendan was to intoxicated to get himself out. But that is still an If and a but situation.

    Ok, as I listen to this case, I always try to keep an open mind. I personally think it's a possibility that he didn't just fall over the edge. Maybe he was pushed, hence why "John" was seen running off. He was aware enough to call for help from friends, call a taxi, then tell the taxi where to go, doesn't add up. But yet can't remember other details like where he heard the him falling on the ground. I understand that anything is possible, we never really know what people will do while intoxicated. I myself have a past experience while being intoxicated, and still to this day I don't really know what happened to me that night. And I don't remember anything. That was 32 years ago. Since then I have made damn sure I don't get drunk. I have 1 or 2 drinks that's it. I don't trust people anymore. It changed me. I'm sorry this happened to you Brandon.

    Why would he need to run to the nearby intersection to call for help if he already had the phone to his ear? That run doesn't look like a fear run. It looks like a guilty run. Was there a punch? Was that the thud on the ground? Wouldn't you be p*ssed if your ride decided to walk off?On a LONG walk?

    Idk I feel like you’re not putting your mind set of a drunk person and kinda just going against John. I feel like you make it seem some of his action don’t make sense…but they kinda happens when you’re drunk . And mind you he was probably still drunk the next morning when he tried looking for him so he was still maybe not explaining well etc
