    Thank you so much Danelle for covering my sister's case. I'm seeing some comments saying my family didn't do enough which is incredibly hurtful. We didn't even know for a while this was happening and when she finally opened up, we tried and tried. She was afraid for her life. We fully believe Joey also shot her due to where she was shot. My sister got lost in drinking to numb the pain of the abuse and he did abuse her, he abused his exes too. She ended up on probation for writing worthless checks to get food and legally couldn't leave the state. Please understand my family will see these comments and we just request to be respectful. This is the most heartbreaking thing we've experienced and lives with us every day. She had a 2x5 bruise on her neck and her last words to family were he dragged her outside by her neck, tore her shirt off, threw in her bushes and hit her over the head with something hard. Another huge red flag is after my sister was found, Joey burned the mattress she was found on, shaved off all this hair which was incredibly uncharacteristic of him (people called him pretty boy for a long time because of his hair) then he went to his ex wives house and tried to break in. When my mom tried to reach my sister, he simply said oh she must have fallen after getting out of the shower, but that she's ok. He never once mentioned she's laying in her own urine, feces and vaginal blood covered head to toe in bruises. He went about his life like normal, he went to work, shopping etc and didn't mention anything to anyone. He allowed her to lay in that horrific state for days without calling 911. He took it further than usual and just probably thought she'll get over it and let her lay like that which haunts me to this day. Also, we have to go by what the police claimed she said while having a jaw broken in two places and apparently couldn't speak at the time, so that's suspicious to me as well. Another thing is to my family's knowledge, the interview with Melissa was not recorded which is odd and we just have to rely on what police said she told them and when she finally could talk she told us about the things Joey did to her. Anyone with a brain could see she was in dire need of immediate medical attention he just didn't want to get caught. While all this was happening, my dad in Texas was battling lung cancer and going through chemo treatments (he passed away from cancer two years after my sister and never saw justice for her) so things were very hard all around and this pushes me even harder to get my sister justice. All we've ever wanted is a trial and and I've seen trials with less circumstantial evidence than this. I hope my sister's story can help others on dangerous situations take that step to get to safety. I've met with a private investigator and she went over the things she would do that should've been done at the start and she mentioned the next logical step is taking all her findings to the next level above state authorities which is the North Carolina FBI office to review. We really hope something will come of us. I have a Twitter account Justice for Melissa Platt (@Justice4MPlatt) where you can follow updates. If you can find it in your heart to even donate $1, anything helps.

    I appreciate the trigger warning. I too was "clumsy and fell a lot" very often. He said it and I said it too. Until our son witnessed it. Then my 3 year old baby started telling multiple people that his daddy hurts his mom and he was going to protect her next time. That broke my heart worse than anything and is the ultimate reason for all the times I left. My son really saved my life, this could have been me.

      Christine Kobzeff hard to tell by the pics but it looked like a shoe or boot mark. Like one side looked rounded (like a heel) and then straight like a foot. I could be wrong. Fleshy soft tissue like that of the abdomen are less likely to bruise because of the subcutaneous fat and basically padding. It would take A LOT of force to make that dark and large of a bruise.

      @frumtheground 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I'm Melissa's sister. The police couldn't even give an explanation of how she got the 2x5 deep bruising on her neck. Her last words to us were he dragged me outside by my neck and hit me over the head with something hard. That would explain the neck bruising and the closed head injury.

    @ArikGST 3 ปีที่แล้ว +157

    Medical Professional here (Nurse): There`s no way those are accidental injuries unless she regularely got into SERIOUS car accidents crashing into trees at 60mph. Broken Jaw and Brainbleeds don`t happen from 7 inch falls or hitting your head a little. That`s stuff you need either the punch of a heavy weight boxer or a hammer for! Is the guy friends with the police, or are they just bad at their job? They should LOOK SERIOUSLY INTO THIS AGAIN. Check the bones for tool mark for example, like a hammer. Also check if the guy had maybe several broken fingers before, because if he BEAT her like that, he probably broke his entire fist.

    • @brandysmithvanderford8524
      @brandysmithvanderford8524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Exactly i have had my jaw broken, it takes tremdous force or high speed impact to cause these injuries! And at first he starts withoh it was a fall, then oh one fall wouldnt be enough for these injuries so then he says she had several falls then she has multiple brain bleeds and her jaw broke in two places so then he says oh she wrecked the car too! And if this man didnt cause this he would want to get her help not leave her laying there unresponsive shoving alcohol down her throat with her half naked and urine and feces all over her! Such a horrible injustice! The cops should be trusting the medical experts not a man that was abusive to multiple women!!

    I have worked in DV for 30+ years and am still working in the area; this is a classic DV case, the POI locking her out of the home as punishment, making her sleep outside, forcing her to be dependant on D&A, so she is dependant on him, isolating her from support, it is all things that I hear daily. I feel for this family, and it breaks my heart she went through this. I also have a sibling who was in a similar situation for 20 years; she has finally escaped. Even though I work in the area, I could do nothing until she was ready to leave. It is very tough on a family when you feel powerless & you see your loved one going through this.

    For people who ask: "why don't they just leave?" Domestic violence survivors are usually isolated from their friends and family. The abuser doesn't started out beating you, it's gradual. They wear down your self esteem and self worth until you feel like you deserve this. I never thought I would be a victim of domestic violence. I didn't even realize I was for a long time. I had to realize I had lost myself before I could help myself.

If you need EMS then take their advice if they tell you that you need help!) We will still show up! And those type of brain injuries are NOT something that would generally come from a mechanical fall... there just isn't enough force usually (of course there are rare instances that it happens) to cause that kind of damage!

      Where I live emergency service is really slow to show up and they make an effort to daley coming or even explain to you that it is not urgent and they wont be coming .. You have to beg and call multiple times.. My mom had late pregnancy and hadnt felt right.. They couldnt be bothered less, she took taxi to hospital and then even there they dawnplayed her state and shoe her away . She was adamant it isnt right so even after being turned away she stayed in lobby. Not even half an hour later, her water broke, fluid was of unnatural green muddy, was rushed and c section was preformed. My sister was born prematurely but that is often the case.. My point, after the fact it was said if she was only 5 min away my sister wouldn't make it and probably mom too.

      We did try to bring a wrongful death suit but we didn't have a lot of money and the various lawyers we talked to were so expensive. We were dealing with funeral services and all that and just couldn't afford to do it. We tried finding a pro bono attorney and were told he has nothing to his name to go after so they wouldn't do it. We weren't trying to get his stuff, we were trying to make a stand and a point. Now, the statute of limitations have passed and we no longer can. I have spoke to a female private investigator in North Carolina willing to work the case as she's appalled at how it was mishandled, this is why we're trying to raise funds for the retainer quote she gave me. While it's possible and rare, one can get broken bones of the face, head and body and brain bleeds from falls but to me her injuries follow that of domestic abuse and rape. This broke my heart for her and the family. My opinion is he was responsible for her every injury. Regardless of the cause of her injuries and any intoxication her boyfriend failed to get her badly needed medical help. He should have at the very least been charged with that. I was beaten, choked, held hostage, thrown into walls, objects thrown at me, head smashed into car windows, had a gun pointed at me multiple times..etc. I almost lost my life multiple times. I fought for my life and almost lost it the night I got my daughter and I away. He pushed me down the stairs with my daughter in my arms, that was the first and last time he hurt my daughter and I knew right then and there I would die to get my daughter out of there. She was 3 and I was 19. I barley made it out of there alive, but I wasn’t giving up and I promised my daughter I would fight to give her a better life. It’s been a battle to get the justice system to protect us ever since I got us away from my abuser. My abuser admitted to the judge EVERYTHING that was read to the judge, all the horrific abuse he put me through. The judge put an order of protection against him for my daughter and I, but it never mattered. He has violated too many times to count and no matter what proof I’ve had, the judge has slapped his tweaking ass right out that court room, no jail time. I’ve broke down in the court room and begged the judge to protect us but I’m never heard. Enough is enough, I refuse to have my daughter grow up thinking her voice would be silenced if she spoke up. I’m still fighting for my voice and every other DV victim voices to be heard. This really helps. My heart breaks for her and her family and the others who have endured the horrific abuse from this evil monster! May she Rest In Peace and that monster rot in hell!

If he wasn’t abusive and manipulative, he would have gotten her help. I guarantee she wasn’t an “alcoholic” by her own choice. No doubt he force fed her liquor. This is beyond sad. There really aren’t words for it. I’m heartbroken for Melissa and I’m absolutely heartbroken for her family. Joey needs to be found in a shallow grave. Exactly. The fact he was giving my sister alcohol through a straw to obviously keep her intoxicated and out of it is truly disturbing. After my sister was found, he took the mattress she was found on outside and set it on fire. Someone else saw the fire and the fire department was called out. He then shaved all his hair off which is uncharacteristic for him as his nickname was pretty boy because of his hair. He then tried to break into his ex wives house. Very odd behaviors after this all happened. I strongly believe due to the odd pelvic bruising and the blood around the vaginal area that he sexually assaulted her in that state. Her last words to us were that he dragged her outside by the neck and hit her over the head with something hard. This would explain the 2x5 deep bruise on her neck.

    Okay so, for a little while now I have been going through the process of accepting my own mortality. My death anxiety came out of nowhere, but it also coincides with my spiritual "awakening." (not sure what else to call it) during this time, there has been a serious shift inside of me. My empathy has shot through the roof. I used to be able to feel absolutely nothing while watching stuff like this, it's like I've had this mental block and it's dissolved and now I'm touched deeply by everything. I can't watch certain movies anymore either, even knowing they aren't real life. So of course, stuff like this has been hard for me to get through. I can't fight back the tears at all while watching this. The pictures of her and knowing what she went through during her time on that bed, it gets to be man. It really gets to me. I picture myself as her, and I picture all the things that could have happened to her at the hands of the person that was suppose to love her. I'm grateful for this new found empathy that I have, though. It's made me so appreciative of my life, and it's made me want to do better for others. Sorry for the long comment, I just had to say how moved I am by this video and how wrong I feel about all of this. As a recovering addict, I hate him for force feeding Melissa that poison. Like how fcking dare you and how much of a monster are you? And to think all this violence stems from his deeply rooted insecurities... he's pathetic and he knows it, that's why he does what he does in my own opinion. Thanks so much Danelle for all that you do.

      I hear you. I have death anxiety, too. It came on about 4 years ago and I am still suffering with it, but starting to move forward. Mine isn't about accepting, it's about the constant fear of the moment I die. It haunts me when I'm awake--I think about it everyday, several times a day. Will I know it's happening? Will I stand a chance to fight? Will I be fully ready? Will my family be informed? What will my last breath feel like? Will I be at peace or will it happen while I'm being tortured? Weird things like that. I literally scream in my sleep and it wakes me up--before I had death anxiety, I thought this was only something that happened in horror movies (or Twilight). I have nightmares where I literally feel like I'm physically dying and it wakes me up for good for the night. Like, in my dreams I can feel myself taking my last breath (after being stabbed or something). Anyway. I see you and hear you and understand. Glad you have found some peace. I hope I can as well--I am working on it.

    As someone who has been in a abusive relationship these "men" are very good at making you feel like its not abuse or it our fault or that we deserve that or that its not that bad and you get so deep into this that you feel like ur voice doesn't matter and that this is the best you get and if u try to leave it gets worse or they will be nice for a bit and honeymoon u for a while to trick u into staying so if I victim says anything it needs to be taken seriously
