  • Daniel Brophy was an extraordinary chef who dedicated his life to his craft, teaching at a culinary school in a tranquil suburb of Portland, Oregon. His passion for cooking extended beyond the classroom, as he raised chickens and turkeys in his backyard and grew his own vegetables to create unique, gourmet dishes. Brophy's love for food and his commitment to sharing his knowledge with others made him a beloved figure in the community.

Tragically, on June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy's life was cut short when he was brutally gunned down in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute, one of the places where he felt most at home. The shocking murder left the culinary world and the Portland community reeling, as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a talented and beloved chef. As the investigation into Brophy's death unfolded, suspicion fell on his wife, romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, who had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband" years earlier. Despite her claims of innocence, evidence mounted against her, including surveillance footage, gun purchases, and inconsistencies in her alibi. In May 2022, nearly four years after Daniel Brophy's murder, Nancy Crampton Brophy was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, bringing a measure of justice to the chef's family and friends. This episode of "Prime Crime with Jesse Weber" delves into the shocking details of the case, exploring the events leading up to Daniel Brophy's untimely death and the investigation that ultimately brought his killer to justice.

Chef Brophy was so kind, a brilliant teacher and he pushed me to ask questions.
To taste everything, work harder and challenged me to succeed.
He was an encyclopedia of knowledge. He loved his students, his rooftop gardens and his chickens were his favorite people.
He was my greatest culinary teacher, being in his class was such a gift of his knowledge.
To say he is greatly missed, just doesn't seem to be enough.
RIP, a one of a kind Chef.

@jessicadavis5431 I agree completely on Chef Brophy. I had him @ Western Culinary in '99. Nancy was in my class. I can't believe this is the first time I've heard of this. And It's horrible.
Something the show said that rang true even in '99, the students all RESPECTED and liked him. Yes, he was tough, but you did NOT want to let him down.
      It's such a shame.

What's even more heartbreaking for me is the fact that Chef Brophy's students show more compassion, grief, and love for him than his own wife. These people are not even family members and yet his death wrecked them. It goes to show how truly evil Nancy is.

She got a whiff of money, got a bit excited by the idea of being richer living a single stress free life. She rolled the dice! Only to realise that she lost it all. And sadly took the life of a very special man! A lose lose situation. Very sad story.
