8 years??!! Am I doing the math right there? 8 years for a series of violent crimes including raping a woman in front of her daughter??!! That's disgusting.

Agree. The tragedy is, that those giving irresponsible verdicts like that are NOT the ones to pay the price. I wonder if they absolutely knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that if they mucked up the killer would come after their wives, their daughters, if that verdict would turn out the same!

@@blushingviolet5928 This is the #1 reason why I support the death penalty, although in this case I don't think it would have been warranted until after the murders. This creep was sentenced to 45 years, but after 5 years had more and more freedom to the point where he was able to get off on his own to kill these poor ladies and little girl. People who think that life in prison is good enough are naive if they think that no idiot in the future will let them out on "good behavior" and more innocent people will die. Further on in the video now and it gets more disturbing how many times this guy could have been stopped and wasn't.

I live in New Mexico and there was a violent crime victim named Katie Sepich that had a law created for her. she was attacked outside of her home, raped, dismembered, burned and scattered all over the town. Her attacker was another violent criminal that wasn’t caught until he committed another crime and his dna was taken. Katie’s law was made for her and has been passed in several states since. This law requires that anyone arrested on a violent crime must submit a DNA sample.

The VINE system is a good idea In theory... But here in Ohio most inmates are released between 8am-10am. But the victims don't get the automated call until 6pm saying the offender has been released. I signed up to get updated info for my abusive ex. And my "robot" call came through at 6:02pm. I could have been dead by then.
They should alert people the day or 2 before so they have time to make plans if needed.
Hopefully the vine system gets better with their alerts.

I already knew he was being released beforehand due to a victims unit here, fortunately. But if I hadn't been in contact with them before, I wouldn't have known until hours later that he was out. Very scary. Hopefully it does get better.

I’ve got a case that I’ve been trying to get covered by someone with a decent following because of how close it hits to home and the fact that it really touches on false/coerced confessions made by an individual with a learning disability. I really want this case to get more coverage- and I’ve kinda got an inside scoop on it. My husband grew up in the home that the murders took place. Slept in the bedroom where a mother and child were killed, and worked with a close friend of one of the murderers. The case was covered by dateline a while back, but that’s all I’ve seen of it. The episode was called “Murder on Cling Lane” if I remember correctly. Robert Davis, one of the three teens convicted of the crime, was found to have made a false confession due to the police being *really* shitty during his interrogation. I believe he spent ten years behind bars, and was released in 2013. The murders took place in 2003, and my husband and his mom were the first people to move into the home after it was repaired (the killers had attempted to burn it down). The whole story is both fascinating and utterly tragic- I’m amazed it hasn’t gotten more coverage! If this case peaks your interest, I’d love to help you do some research on it and get it out there. It’s definitely impacted how police conduct interviews in my area, but I’m not sure if any particular laws have been put in place regarding interviews of developmentally disables individuals. Perhaps you could do a series on false/coerced confessions?
Apologies for the long comment and any spelling/grammar errors! It’s hard to type on my phone and even harder to revise 😂.

It probably wasn't all his fault. She could have contributed a lot of what led to the divorce. He may have been the most understanding, helpful husband and she just wouldn't accept help or anything. That happens more than people realize. Its not always the mans fault. I don't know the actual situation so it could have been all him but to not know exactly what happened and still judge that man is wrong. Especially because he lost his daughter, the woman he loved and a good friend all in one horrible tragedy. We have to have some compassion and empathy or we're no better than the sociopaths/psychopaths that commit these crimes. And I am sure he feels a tremendous amount of guilt. It probably eats at him daily that he wasn't there and didn't protect them.

The only person who is guilty is the monster who killed them. The ex husband has nothing to do with what happened, couples split up all the time. It has nothing to do with this case. Could be many reasons the relationship broke down. Cant stay together and one or both of you be unhappy just because. I've been married 25 years and I love my husband but I tell my kids not to get married.

After reading Ann Rule's book, I got the impression that Jack Wicklund was further collateral damage of Campbell. I believe that Jack could never forgive himself for not being there to protect his wife, from the first attack by Campbell. Regardless, Jack Wicklund was killed in a car accident shortly after the couple divorced. This was years before the murders.

I cannot imagine how it must feel to love someone so deeply and spend so much of your life with them only for them to decide that since you have trauma symptoms I can no longer be with you. My partner and I have been together for years and I was assaulted just as we got together. Living with someone who has trauma or mental health issues can take a toll on the other person's mental health too. Maybe the partner has their own mental health issues too. Most people are not mental health professionals, it's not their job to heal you. Nobody is obligated to stay with you just because you have trauma and everybody has the right to look out for their own mental health first. Also, there could have been other reasons for the breakup, people can just fall out of love.

@@AngelDeed obviously there's more to it because every relationship is so unique as is each individual, however I have heard this happen in a lot of cases I've listened to recently and so seeing a pattern I made a comment on my opinion about it. No one is obligated to stay with anyone of course, I'd never say such a thing. It just surprises me that a spouse can see their partner suffering and choose to leave them alone in that place. It does seem like a terrible thing to do to someone, rather than encouraging them to get help and using healthy boundary setting etc

i get so LIVID when i see a case that could so clearly have been prevented. at multiple points, these three lives could have been saved if things would have just been done right in the first place. it’s just blasphemy to me that this man was given any kind of free roam abilities at all given how obvious it was that he’d hurt every single person who crossed his path. my heart hurts for all three victims, but specifically 8 year old Shanna. that little girl had to see her own mother, already murdered in the most gruesome way, then she was attacked and killed herself. it just tears my heart into shreds thinking about something like that.

These offenders are often products of parents/authority figures who withhold consequences for unacceptable behavior in childhood. Without consequences, they don't develop a conscience, so become narcissistic sociopaths or psychopaths. It makes no sense that the criminal justice system reinforces what those offenders learned throughout childhood, putting society at risk. Then, it's ridiculous that criminals are rewarded for "good behavior" in prison when they don't have the same opportunities to fulfill their inclinations while locked away from society, but in this case the guy wasn't even well-behaved in prison yet was still rewarded for good behavior. These murders were entirely preventable.

  • @Glorydancer333
    @Glorydancer333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

This was covered so thoroughly and well. Thank you for making sure the victims' voices are heard. I was reminded of the boomerang effect violence and murder causes. From Renee's fear and unshakable uneasiness after her assault, to the resulting divorce. And then the wonderful neighbors were innocently caught up in the horror of the crime as well (with Barbara ultimately losing her life) and her husband being so traumatized by what he saw that he had to numb the pain with drinking and drugs, that eventually no doubt contributed to his death. And of course, the beautiful little girl, who was twice victimized and then murdered by Charles. The results of all this seems to be never ending. And as many have said, seeing so many places where the murders could have been prevented (if the justice system was working properly) is disgusting and tragic. Huge mistakes were made with no reprecussions except to the victims. So unfair and deadly. 😔

Renae was one of my very best friends niece. Clearview is still small but was absolutely tiny until the 1990, it is 4 and a half miles of land. It was a very much a few streets in the woods. This case was HUGE in Snohomish County. My father was high up in the government staff beginning at the end of 1980. This was a major screwup, because before this happened they, as I understand it, there was no written rules about rapists being released on work release. I was only 12, when the murders happened. I am pretty sure that she lived on 180th St off of HWY 9. Back then Hwy 9 was only a 2 lane highway.
KING5 news did a 12 part series in May 1994, the day of the execution.
My mom ran directly into the swat team with fully decked out with their AR rifles while they were escorting Campbell to court. There were SO many death threats against him. He was flown out of the Snohomish County Airport (where I worked from 1988 to 1992).
Campbell was a huge pos... in my opinion. While in prison he grew into a seriously obese man. He fought the justice system the entire time. He said that it would be cruel punishment to execute him by hanging because the noose would decapitate him.
Shannah was literally decapitated but for the skin of the back neck. It is such a devastating ordeal. I feel so sorry for Don who lost his soul mate. All because of revenge.
Monroe is in Snohomish County. But he was transferred to the county jail... and then released on work release.
Work release was out of the Snohomish County jail and he walked off the crew. In Snohomish County work release the do garbage maintenance off the side of the highway.
    I know it is ridiculous.
So much of this State wanted him to die. He was so EVIL.
The employee who got pregnant, in Monroe, got pregnant while he was in the prison. Anyone who has that of poor judgment to have sex with an inmate in the prison where you work, it is not surprising that she didn't say anything about his vindictivness. Judge Thibodeau was a really good judge. This case was absolutely horrible.
Like I said, I was 12 when the murders happened, but I was 24, married and just pregnant with my 1st child, when the earth was relieved of the scumbag Campbell. I have some serious feelings about this case and the horrific miscarriage of justice. I know that I have more information on this case, if you want to know more please let me know .
The Clearview Cafe sold white t-shirts that said "Hang in there, Campbell!!! with a noose on it. They were sold out before the execution.
What a big strong man, raping and killing his victims, he went crying like the little b* he was. It took like 12 guards to get him on the board and brought to the gallows. He was over 350 lbs.
Also, in January of 1993, in Clark County Washington, Vancouver, WA, Westley Allan Dodd was hanged for raped and murdered 3 little boys in September and October, 1989. (brothers ages 10 and 11 in one attack and a 4 year old separately). He was caught after trying to abduct a 6 yr old, just 1 week after his last murder... when he failed, he fled, but his ca4 broke down on the highway a couple miles away. The boy told his family immediately and the hunt did not take very long. Even though his crimes were long after Campbell's, he asked for his sentence to be escalated. He waived all appeals and was executed by hanging in the first week of 1993. He was the first execution in decades. In 2018, Washington abolished the death penalty. P.S. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL, huge fan for years

My dad commuted for 18 months and we were moving from Oregon to Edmonds, Wa.. Campbell's hometown. On May 3rd one of my friends disappeared and her body was found on May 6th. She was murdered by a 14 6r old 8th grader. He beat her to death with a hockey stick, that was found in his school locker in pieces.
He was sentenced at 16 to get out on his 21 birthday with no record. It is insane but that's the justice system.

There was an issue with the judge on the case as well after the murderers were caught and put on trial which caused the families of the victims to have to be subjected to reliving this tragedy again. The Channon Christian Act came about and would do away with the state's 13th juror rule, which requires a judge to validate a jury verdict by signing a document.

What needs to be done is that the person in charge of releasing Charles to the lower security needs to be charged with Charles and held accountable for the crimes that were committed because of their insane decision to set this man loose on society. Until they are held accountable this will continue to happen. You know how the getaway driver gets charged with the bank robbers because they are all involved?? This is the same thing - and they are responsible for what that felon is doing out in society! Do they even realize that their mistake cost 3 lives??!!??
Violent offenders need to be labelled as such, serve 100% of their prison sentence and never be allowed to be held anywhere but maximum security. This is not rocket science people. Simple rules would have kept these women safe (and everyone in society, because he clearly was a danger to anyone!) Why are we allowing this violent offender ANY CHANCE to be among ANYBODY ever again??? It defy’s logic!! Where is the accountability?? What happened to the people that made the decision to move him??? NOTHING!!!! This needs to change ASAP.
Why didn’t any of these neighbors call police?? Back In my neighborhood in the ‘80’s - if we saw someone out of place in the neighborhood our next call was to the police. And they would respond sometimes even catching the criminal still at the scene if it was a burglary.

But I think if he was ever released, he would've done this. Even after 45 or more years. I think the victims should've moved far away, and maybe even been given new identities. She could've also changed her name legally herself.

edit: i’m like 50 minutes in and okay what did this man do to get such good treatment when he was clearly deranged and unstable. it’s like law enforcement said “there’s no way a sexually violent sociopath with no sense of morals would go back and kill the people he said he’d kill… let’s let him out only 10 miles away!” it sounds like they were studying him to see if he’d actually do it. either that or whoever made those decisions clearly is too dumb to be in such a position. here i am again saying law enforcement should have an iq limit because people who have horrible judgment should not be in charge of the wellbeing of society! his own mother begged for him to not be transferred and they ignored her???? and committing crimes literally every other day is somehow the behavior of a model prisoner. ah i didn’t know that! i think a toddler could do a better job at assessing prisoners. this is one of those situations where i hope whoever was involved in his release is kept up at night knowing they caused the death of three innocent people. i really don’t care if it’s “wrong”, i genuinely hope they’re tortured by it and quit their jobs so their stupidity doesn’t lead to death again. i’m rly into planes and i always joke about ATC being way too laidback and indifferent for the nature of their job, but this is like the way more morbid and aggravating version. i couldn’t care less abt the actual murderer because it was inevitable that he’d kill, but my blood boils thinking of the people who allowed him to do it. the kittens in the background made this easier to digest, but it’s still such a stupidly frustrating case.

My favorite author, the late Ann Rule, did a short story on this case in the back of one of her books (I've read everything by her, and I don't remember what book exactly). This is one case that has definitely stuck with me, so I almost had a heart attack when I realized that I know this case.

Do you think that there was a kick back arrangement between the prison and the businesses that the inmates were providing cheap labour for? So there was motivation to get inmates into that program regardless of suitability?

I will say as an ex Juvenile Court Counselor there are no real consequences for kids who commit crimes unless it is extreme. They focus more on rehabilitation by providing mental health services or prosocial activities but even then that is also unsuccessful.

The mental health services those kids really need is teaching them consequences for their behaviors so they will develop healthy consciences. Our society needs to realize that administering appropriate consequences is not a form of emotional abuse, but helps children develop into happy and productive adults, while protecting society.

Theres a case of a missing young man (21) from Plymouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. His name is Zack LeFave his been missing since January 1st 2021
I dont personally know him but I follow the facebook page for him and his family is brokenhearted wondering what happened to him. Maybe getting more coverage would help solve his case!!

I think it's hilarious when these evil killers get scared and fight when it's time to carry out there death sentence. Karma, God, whatever you want to call it always come calling. Especially if your an evil person.

I absolutely love your videos anyway. However, I have even deeper love and respect for you with the "educational video series" (I just named that now haha).
I recently learnt about Andrew Harper's BRUTAL death in the UK. His wife, Lissie fought years to introduce Harper's law, which came into force last week (28 of June 2022 i believe). Which allows people to be sentenced to life if they kill a emergency worker whilst committing a crime. I may be actually Australian, but that was a case has effected me lately. You would be the ideal prefect to bring light to Andrews story, whilst also educating people ☺️
Sorry to ramble to much ! Hope everyone ans thier families are doing well, keeping safe and healthy 😅

I was going to say the same about Harpers Law! I just watched MrBallens video on his tragic death and it gutted me. I can't imagine less than 30 days after I marry the love of my life, he is taken from me in such a violent fashion. Then those boys showed absolutely no remorse and were laughing and smirking when walking out of the courtroom. Absolutely disgusting. I hope they rot in hell honestly. That story struck a real chord in me! Definitely hit hard.

Danelle, you probably already know of this one but MrBallen recently uploaded a video titled "They had to make a special law because of him". I would highly recommend you do a video about that story.
