    It's the inner monlogue of a wounded soldier, who can't move or speak, begging to die while everyone else is trying so hard to keep him alive, and he's unable to reach out to them. He renders life and himself useless, and worthless, and all he can think about is the war and the friends that he lost. He feels like a tortured freak who just wants to rest in peace.

      That's what I was thinking too. BTW, you have to have been there to understand what's going on, I was. Remember, we've been involved in TWO wars since that album was released. The unfortunate young soldier who is the subject is afflicted with a TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury. You don't necessarily have to have visible or bleeding wounds to be permanently and totally disabled. The specific condition they're referring to is called "locked in syndrome", where it appears that a person is awake and looking around the room and sees everything around them and can also hear everything being said, but cannot move or respond. I've seen it, I've had battle buddies that were just a bit closer to an IED or improvised explosive device, or mortar round when it exploded. Sometimes it's temporary, sometimes not, but in every case that person is never the same afterward. So please, don't joke around about that shit, for some of us die hard Metallica fans it just hits a little too close to home.
      Love your stuff, even you Adam Sandler.

    Metallica formed in 1981 and released their first real album kill em all with James hetfield on rhythm guitar and vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums, cliff burton on bass and Dave mustiane lead guitar. They fired Dave Mustaine during their first tour. Because Dave was supposedly a violent drunk and a black belt in Thai Kwon Do or Jul jitsu. But in James's own words he was gonna kill somebody. Mustiane went on to form megadeth. Then they replaced Dave with kirk hammett on lead guitar from the rest of the kill em all tours, ride the lightning, same line up, master of puppets same line up but cliff burton was killed in a bus accident while on tour in Sweden. He was replaced by Jason Newsted on bass for this album and justice for all .Newsted was also on (what fans call the black album because it's all black) it's really just a self titled album metallica metallica. Jason stayed through load, reload ,garage inc ,and then quit the band. The producer Bob rock played bass on st. Anger as well as on some live shows until they got a replacement. They got Robert Trujillo on bass and released death magnetic and hardwired to self destruct. Robert Trujillo was previously bassist for ozzy Osbourne, infectious grooves and suicidal tendencies. So the only 2 original members are James hetfield( not Hatfield) not your fault everyone says it wrong that isn't a metal geek from way back in the late 80's until now. But the lead guitarist Kirk hammet is pretty close to an original because he was only absent from their first albums writing but even took over playing live during their first tour. Dave mustiane and megadeth got pretty big as well. But that's another story.

    • @michaeldelguidice1683
      @michaeldelguidice1683 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I also forgot their real original bassist was Ron Mcgovney. But he was never on any of their albums. He played on the no life til leather demo for the record company to hear a few kill em all demons but he was replaced with cliff burton before they started recording their first album. He wasn't in the band for long before they fired him for cliff burton on bass.

      Your wrong about a very important detail , and that is that they fired Dave Mustaine 6 weeks before they went into the studio in Sept of '83 to record their first album, that obviously being "Kill'em All", they called up Kirk Hammet , who was at the time lead guitarist and founder of Exodus, and offered him the job like a day or two before they fired Dave, and obviously Kirk took the job and quite literally overnite became the official new lead Guitarist of metallica and as I said just 6 weeks later they went into the studio to record Kill Em All in Sept of '83, these are rather important details of the bands literal history which is why I typed this to correct you on these couple inaccuracies. 🤘🤘

      Lars takes tons of shit for being overhyped as a drummer. IMO, as a humble amateur drummer, his drumming on Metallica's earlier stuff was a critical part of the band's revolutionary sound. While not the most technically mind-blowing drummer, his influence on those that came after him has been undeniable. Plus, iirc, he does a great deal of the writing and arrangements for their music. It does make me cringe slightly when he's compared to the likes of Danny Carey because his technical abilities are God-like. I guess it depends on your definition of "greatest", but, just watching TH-cam drummers, you'll see that an overwhelming number of them possess technical and creative abilities that likely surpass those of Lars. He still brings his signature speed and style to their most recent releases, but again, IMHO, he earned his lifetime of respect with their first 4 albums - everything after that, he's fair game for comparison.
      His live performances in recent memory, though, have received a lot of flack from the internet (TONS of videos doing everything from critiquing his drumming to "Lars-ifying" other music for the sake of comedy). I think it's partly just "cool" to rag on Lars these days, but he definitely does a fair amount of cringy things during their shows, especially things that drummers and other musicians notice and say, "WTF, man."

    • @jeremyhanson1019

      Lars was a preppy Swedish tennis protege that decided to learn to play drums. He does a lot of things that drummers of that era had a hard time doing. Anyone can drum fast. What made Lars tricky was he played a lot of odd time signatures using triple beats. It's odd to go from a typical 4 beat measure to a 3 beat measure.
      Other than that he is kinda ordinary.

    • @sarahp8058
      @sarahp8058 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremyhanson1019 yeah but his little 4 beat to 3 beat and use of odd time signatures is nothing in my book when I think of what Danny does or Neil did or Stewart Copeland etc. I agree though he is pretty typical and nothing that special. I do think he is the right drummer for Metallica's sound though.

    The guy that died was the bass player Cliff Burton. He died on the Master of Puppets tour. 1986 I think? I remember hearing it announced on KNAC here in Southern California. What’s creepy is the guitar player Kirk and Cliff drew cards to see who got the bunk Cliff died in when the tour buss flipped over. Cliff drew the Ace of Spades. The last photo ever taken of Cliff was of him on stage wearing a Dawn of the Dead shirt too. Crazy shit...

    I'm late to this party, but James literally wrote this song about the main character of the movie witch is why they used the movie in the video, this song was released near the beginning of the Gulf war, I was 19 the first time in my life a sitting president declared war. This song proved to people who weren't already fans, that thrash was not just noisey screaming, it takes genuine musicianship to pull this off.

    One was on And Justice for all, which came out in 88. Cliff, James, Kirk and Lars was your lineup for Kill em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. During a European tour after Master, Cliff died in a bus accident. Cliff's replacement was Jason Newsted from And Justice , black album, Load, Reload and Garage inc. Jason left in 2k or 01. Current bassist Rob has been with the band since 03 and has been on the more recent 2 albums, Death Magnetic and Hardwired.

    The video is an amazing piece of art. The clips from Johnny and the story in general are truly mortifying if you get what is going on. This is also the debut album of Jason Newsted, who ultimately had some rough times with the band despite doing amazing work. I'll always love the bands music, especially from back in this era, but they've had a lot of ups and downs with their lineup over the years.

    Original lineup was Hetfield, Ulrich, McGovney and Loyd Grant but he was replaced with Mustaine shortly after they recorded 'Hit The Lights' for the Metal Massacre compilation. Mustaine was replaced with Hammett from Exodus before they recorded Kill 'Em All and Burton replced McGovney in a similar fashion although much earlier. Burton died in a bus accident in Europe in 1986 and was replaced with Newsted later that year. Trujillo replaced Newsted.

    Cliff Burton was their Bass Guitarist, and actually their SECOND Bassist. The ORIGINAL Bass Guitarist was Ron 'McGoony' McGovney.
    Metallica's ORIGINAL lineup was: James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Ron McGovney, Dave Mustain.
    After Ron left the band Cliff Burton took over as Bass Guitarist, and Cliff Burton was tragically killed in an accident while Metallica was on tour in Europe in their early years. After the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton, we-us Metal-ers started referring to the song Fade to Black as 'Cliff Burton's song'.
    And for the record, that's NOT a new thing. We-us Metal-ers started referring to Fade to Black as 'Cliff Burton's song' back in the mid to late 80's.

And maimed horribly in service. Never been blown up, but definitely attacked when deployed 07-09. 3 times then, it’s fittting, also extremely sad, when you think about it. I do love these guys, great music.

    Out of all Metallica songs. This and Fade to Black are my all time fav's . I would play Fade to Black on repeat while I slept. When I was in my Teen's. Nowdays Love to sit back with my friends and play The Metallica Guitar Hero. Or just jam this in the background while playing COD Warzone. To pass time since the world went into quarantine. What else do we have other than our hope in humanity's perseverance to mobilize apart but together in mind/heart and Stay Alive. To make art, play games or listen to Timeless Music Amongst friends. Life is precious we all should enjoy everyday as if it's the last. Rock On Guys great reaction!

    Also the clips in the video are from a cult 1971 anti war movie called 'Johnny Got His Gun' that the band ended up buying the rights to as it was cheaper than paying royalties to the film's owners. Also the soldier hasn't just lost his limbs, he's also lost his sight and hearing.

The drug in me is you and the drug in me is reimagined. "Alone" is the song that started the new sound and for the haters.
