One of the lowest points in my life was when I stayed in a hospital for a few days due to a suicide attempt. The only thing that kept me sane was writing the lyrics of Fade to black over and over in my notebook. I couldn’t listen to music so everything was from memory. I’m glad that part of my life is over at least for now but like always Metallica is always apart of my life as it changes.

This song has saved a lot of lives. In case you didn't catch it, it's basically a look into the mind of someone having suicidal thoughts. Metallica has said that they've had tons of people approach them and say how they thought they were all alone until this song made them realize that other people felt like they did. They didn't realize that other people could relate.
Also, that solo at the end is, I think, Kirk Hammet's best.

    1 - Transition all those hand-movements to head-banging.
2 - Behold the masterful musicianship of Cliff Burton.
3 - 4.5 Albums. Metallica died with Cliff. What you still get are only the aftershocks of a shredding bass.

I remember years ago I visited a friend who was working bouncer at a teen disco event. A lot of kids dancing to some in-one-ear-out-the-other pop, when someone put on Fade To Black. Soon most of the kids were standing, heads bobbing to the music.

Master of Puppets is more popular, but Ride the Lightning will always be the best Metallica LP. Just like Paranoid is the most popular Black Sabbath LP, but Master of Reality, Vol.4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are better.

Who would have ever thought that bands like Metallica playing thrash metal would have become so popular. Especially because at the time thrash metal got no radio play, no promotion, wasn't really much of videos yet. It was the most hated most derided type of music by average Joe's, parents, government and critics. Now that the big four are so popular it's kind of amazing. Just saw Slayers final show ever. You really should go down the Slayer rabbit hole too :) Great reaction.

Great track, this is my fathers favorite song by them. Metallica deserves a day. I personally prefer master to ride but they are both great. Sort of unpopular opinion but “and Justice for all” is my favorite. I can acknowledge that master is a better album, but justice has my favorite sound

Blackened might be my favorite of their straight, "thrash" songs, and the remixed & remastered version with Jason's crushing bass is amazing. But I think the best thing James ever wrote is Fade to Black, at least lyrically speaking.

Glad you guys did this one, my favorite song of all time. The song that made me fall in love with Metallica. I now have the Ride the Lightning "M" tattooed on my forearm. This album is short but a masterpiece.
The album has a very dark theme for sure, as you guys mentioned. From an interview I saw with James about the album, the band was very interested and "into" the theme of death at the time. Hence song titles like For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Trapped Under Ice, Creeping Death, etc. Love your guys' reactions!

I’ve been listening to Metallica since the mid 80s and am a die hard “old school” fan. Their first 3 albums (kill em all/ ride the lightning/master of puppets) are the best they ever made- not that the ones since are bad by any means. THEN they came out with “hardwired” a few years ago. Talk about still kicking ass in your 50s! You are in for a ride if you start down the Metallica slide. Not only is the music itself spectacular but they are know for very deep meaningful lyrics.

To answer the question, yes, Metallica and a few other groups as a part of Monsters of Rock played in front of the largest ever crowd (1.6 million according to Wikipedia) for a music show/festival, at Tushino Airfield in Moscow on 9/28/91. 4 other musical artists have played in front of more people, but they weren't concerts/festivals (New Year's Eve in Rio, Bastille Day in Paris, & Moscow's 850th anniversary celebration).

In the early-mid 90s, if you put a 5 act rock festival together and somehow got (in no order of popularity) Metallica, U2, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi all to play it in one night, at the right spot you might get the largest crowd ever assembled. And that’s likely to this day.
