The genius of the song is how the tempo speeds up as he becomes more frustrated and desperate. The drum bursts sounding like machine guns, and even the guitar solo is chaotic as if his mind is spiraling out of control. The music telling the story along with the lyrics is often overlooked.

The movie was from the early 70's - "Johnny got his gun"... based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo in 1939 about a soldier in World War I (the 1910's) who survived without any of his senses or limbs intact.
Metallica based the song 'One' on the story.

I’ve always thought it was unfair that many held their early greatness against them. Their 80’s stuff is some of the best music ever made. Of course they wouldn’t be able to keep that up forever. I give them credit for branching out artistically and changing their sound with every album. It would have been real easy to release the same album over and over again like some bands do.

    • @tylorstafford20

Crazy thing is, bands today are applauded for changing their sound up from album to album. The same people are the ones that talk crap about Metallica

@@tylorstafford20 The thing is Metallica is, at the very least, partially to blame for that type of feeling towards their music. There are stories of their early fans literally standing around with their backs to the stage while other bands played during shows. Behavior they endorsed if I'm not mistaken. They also made no bones about making fun of "b*tt rock" and/or "hair metal" back in the 80's & 90's and other "lesser" types of music at the time, from what I remember. Heck I want to say I even remember them making fun of bands that "sell out" and put their music in movies and thing. As much as I like the moment in Stranger Things early on in their career I don't think it would have happened.
Truth to tell they just fell off later in their careers. Load and Reload were OK while Death Magnetic / Saint Anger? or whatever was an abomination that sounded like Lars was beating on metal trashcans and losing Jason was a huge mistake that can be squarely blamed on Hetfield's ego at the time, if the stories are true. But to be perfectly honest they never truly recovered from the death of Cliff imo. James and Lars would have never even thought about pulling the BS they did with Jason and their music suffered.
All that being said I will put their first four albums up against anybody's music without reservation because it really is that dang good. After that things get iffy.

@@rigrmortis3393I get what you’re saying, and their first albums were absolute genius, but I think they still released some gems here and there afterwards. They just didn’t release full albums that were entirely magic like that. Even though they’re cover albums, I love Garage Days and Garage, Inc… I still strain my neck going crazy to The Prince and Last Caress/Green Hell at 46 years old lol. Them boys knew how to do a cover.

This is one of those songs based on a movie based on a book. My teacher in 8th grade read us the book, way back in 1986. He was a Vietnam Vet, and he believed it was important for us to know all the sides of war, those who come home, the dead, and those who get lost in between. The book was absolutely amazing, and left a huge mark on me. It also led me to join the military. It was one of the few times I wasn't interested in falling asleep during class.

The movie is Johnny got his Gun...I've watched it before. Its a really good movie. And yeah, Metallica did buy the rights to the movie. The title of the movie is based on an old saying from, I forget which war. Either the first or second world war. In the U.S. there was a saying. Johnny get your Gun. Which meant sign up and go to war. The movie itself is an anti-war movie and implying that Johnny got his gun and now look what happened to him.

What Ash said about the fresher or more alive the organs are/were is spot on. I'm on the list for a heart and kidney transplant. I actually got called a few weeks ago to come in they had a heart and a kidney. The donor was still alive at the time, but on life support. I'm on some blood thinners that would have to be out of my system before they could do the surgery. The family didn't agree to keep them on life support for the 3-4 days it would have taken. (Which I completely understand) So the organs went to someone else on the list that could have the surgery that day.
Also, Dave is correct. One is one of the most badass songs to see performed live,

The film is called Johnny Got His Gun. It's an anti-war film about an American soldier in WWI who takes a direct hit from a mortar round while sheltering in a foxhole.
He loses his arms and legs, his sight, hearing, and ability to speak. All he feels is pain, and all he wants is to be allowed to die. Very sad film.
If you are interested in the topic, Whose Life is it Anyway? is another excellent film/stage play, starring Richard Dreyfuss as an artist who is rendered quadriplegic in a car accident. He's completely conscious and lucid, and basically has to sue his doctor in order to have the choice.

This has nothing to do with being maimed from war, but my father died 7/14/23 of a two year battle with dementia and a stroke that left him without the ability to swallow, so no water or food. He put in his directives that he didn't want any extraordinary measures to keep him alive! After the stroke it took him a month to pass because he kept holding on, his oxygen saturation rate slowly went from 80 to 70 to 60% and it was utterly painful to watch him slowly pass! My father was a brilliant man and was a mechanical engineer and when he was diagnosed with dementia to slowly not be able to speak and to be staring into space is hard to watch! Both my parents had dementia at the same time, my mom is physically ok, but her mind is gone and she has the same medical directives as my father's! I'm not really a metal fan like I was in the 80's, but this a sad but powerful song!

The very first Metallica music video, which they demanded in 1989 under ever increasing pressure, was created primarily by MTV and was produced by the band! Because many, many months in advance of One, Lars said that Metallica, never wanted to and would never make a music video! It had a little bit of the background that Lars was already walking on certain small paths of war with the music industry, record labels also with MTV because in his opinion many others, record companies, other industries were already making money without any real performance of their own, etc. and the musicians, artists the last ones were those who were lucky enough to receive a small tip for their work! Lars was already way ahead of the times/knowledge when it came to rights, marketing, and corporate ownership of image and sound rights, as Lars and Metallica were later pushed aside in the 90s with the Napster trial! Today it is Spotify that earns billions of dollars, generates sales and actually pays out a small part of it to all artists worldwide! With this music video One, Lars finally gave in to the pressure from MTV a little bit, but the first version (official full length 7:27 min and the clips from the film) was too "violent and long" for MTV, which in turn was something Lars was worried about It didn't matter, so the second version for MTV was made somewhat mainstream compatible!

A person should have the right to choose to live or die, especially in Terminal calses, or in a case like in the video, they shouldnt have to suffer. I know i remember a story from a couple or so years back, there this young couple that hadnt been married long, had a baby, and she got diagnosed with brain cancer, and she went to Oregon i believe where its legal along with 9 other states to have physician-aided death, and she went that route so her husband and family or her for the most part, didnt have to get to where she had to suffer from it, because they knew it was coming, and what she was going to have to go though, and ive seen enough people suffer in my life with illness, that i cant blame her. If someone wants to go that route, it should be our right, no one elses.

A goat doesn't sound like that... (Check one out on YT) and Metallica are just NOT the G.O.A.T. anymore... Maybe once, and they still play arenas/ stadiums... but they r just not what they once were circa 1983 - 1993...
I grew up at the altar of Metallica in the early 90's... This album 'And justice for all' was gospel to my soul... Just disappointing to see their career from 1996 onwards.

I enjoyed their career 1996 onwards very much. I’m sorry you didn’t. You missed out on some great music. Also, of course they aren’t what they were from 83-93. That’s some of the best music ever made. It’s an unfair standard. It would be ridiculous to expect them to keep releasing all-time great albums.

@@billbrasky1288 I bought everything Metallica put out from 1996 forward... I didn't 'miss' anything... I heard it all.
That is why I have this opinion... 😈
I heard '72 Seasons' and it just sounds like they took old riffs and just re-arranged them into a 'new' record... disappointing. The very fact that it fell off the charts real fast proved my opinion is shared by quite a few.
I expect Metallica to put out great albums, or am I not? U won't buy a bottle of Pepsi and expect to find it filled w/ salt water, do u?
I saw their 'Alternica' phase in the 90's... I saw them live in 2000 and they were boring at points... Again, I was just not blown away (I paid $70 which was a lot back then!)
I bought 'St. Anger' in 2003 and I couldn't listen to the whole thing cos it was awful... I saw them live in '03 and it was better, but awful opening band.
I bought... 'Death magnetic'... better, but never bothered to see them live again.
I bought 'Hardwired'... again an improvement in the right direction.
In comparison, I have seen Slayer more than 7 times and they've always blown me away... Bands like Anthrax, Sepultura, Megadeth, Death Angel, Testament, Kreator, Destruction... have actually gotten better w/ age...
Death Angel is a band that actually recorded better albums after 2004 than the ones they did in the 80's.
      Not so much Metallica.

@@sumonjamal1653 1. Record sales don’t mean shit. If they did the Backstreet Boys would be one of the best bands from the 90’s 2. So what if 72 seasons isn’t that great. They’re 60+ years old and you have a whole catalog to choose from

Couldn't disagree more about Metallica live. The environment is electric - but they can't play their own songs. The mess ups are non stop. Hearing Kirk try to play his own solos is embarrassing and he ends up just wandering around till he syncs back up. I recognize the issue is my OCD - I can only go to classical musical performances because they are always accurate, or live music that I don't already know so that I don't know where the mistakes are. Back to Metallica this was an issue all the way back to the Live Shit: Binge and Purge tour. Bought the $150 box set - tossed the VHS tape in the player - and god was the music itself bad. Only properly performed song is their introduction tune from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - but that's prerecorded. They are a band that needs the 30 takes in the studio to get it right.

The film is called Johnny get your gun or Johnny got his gun, something like that. One of their best songs for sure back when their music had impact before they sold out.

When and how did they “sell out”? They’ve never done anything except make music they wanted to make. They never bowed down to anyone.
