  • Introducing The Bully: gr-research.com/product/old-s...
    The Brute’s “big brother” is even bigger, badder and he’s not holding back!
    The Bully brings both high efficiency and 12″ servo subwoofers to the fight, offering detailed and impactful bass with extension flat to 20Hz
    This make them easy to drive even with low-powered tube amplifiers, plus the Subwoofer’s PEQ function and extension filters give you full control over the bass response.

And the the speakers sounds so much better. They sound so much more relaxing and more focused. But I wish upgrade the filter.

    I'm sure while designing the speaker, you've looked at it Every Which Way... Wondering what your thought process is while building that speaker enclosure. Wonder if you considered mounting the subwoofer sideways allowing a narrower baffle with less diffraction, add a little bit more friendly to the wifester 😂.
    I'm sure it's an amazing loudspeaker, it's just so BIG. As you mentioned.
    It kind of reminded me of my original Definitive BP 2000s I had purchased many years ago. Those were fun speakers!

    Really nice speakers! It's cool to see your enthusiasm over them. Question: Is there a reason the woofer is as far away from the other drivers as it is? Also, how many octaves is it covering? Will grilles be available? I'll bet that sounds nice though. I've never heard a servo sub.

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Center to center spacing is fine for drivers crossing this low. For a perfect blend the dial on the servo crossover is at 80Hz. Acoustically they are crossing above the range. There are no grill options right now. Servo control is a must hear.

    • @wattspeakers
      @wattspeakers 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dannyrichie9743 Thx! 80Hz is low, and explained the spacing. So it's sort of like having stereo subwoofers! Your mid-bass drivers in parallel must be kicking nice and tight. Really nice build. I recently hooked up a vintage pair of Energy 6th order passive bandpass subs which roll off around 100 but are audible into the 200 Hz range, while reaching into the mid 20's on the low end. 40 year old speakers likely won't compete with the woofer you've got, but I was pleasantly surprised how much more musicality it added to a full range set of 8" 2 ways, (which go down in the mid 30's, but adding the stereo subs is different than an LFE or a DVC sub. I liked your idea of using your new big speakers in home theater, they'd be phenomenal at that.

    As an engineer and avid speaker/amplifier DIY-er, this is just right. The concept, technology and price is spot on. The boutique over-hyped and overpriced wide baffled speakers out there (Harbeth, Spendor, Audio Note etc.) are no way better than this, it's all about engineering, not magic. Hi Danny!
    I have a suggestion, that will surprice and delight quite a big part of the diy community. Make a speaker with horn/pro drivers in the midrange and tweeter aria. Without the normal horn coloring and distorsion and dispersion issues. Maybe with metal hifi tweeters in a horn on top. And not for heavy metal, but jazz and folk and classical music. With the horns dynamic and "live" properties. Midrange from 5-600 Hz and up. And preferably as dipole/open back. There are many good affordable midrange drivers these days.
    Mofi 8" and 10" killers...
    Best regards, HelgeH, Denmark

      @bowmandk1 You are a true visionary. The future for audiophiles will be the result of designing loudspeakers using horn -loaded drivers in ways to overcome the beaming that is characteristic of dynamic ( point source) drivers. Note that the horns will NOT be pointed directly towards the listener, but aimed up or down to produce a larger sound field.

    Having the subs in the same place as your left and right can cause issues. I have matching 550p subs underneath my JBL Studio 580's, and it does not work at all. I knew this would be the case, but I wanted a pair of these subs for other reasons. They're unplugged and just being used as stands right now. If you have 2 subs, you kind of want them in non-symmetrical places. I suppose you could put these towers in a room, but just not centered in the room. Also, does it have the ability to mix in LFE from an RCA jack?

Aren't we at the mercy of the amp builder to give us good quality banana outlets? If you have lousy connectors at the amp end, won't that kind of cancel out the quality work you've done at the speaker end? Just a thought....

    That said there are plenty of YT channels that audition speakers and the results are clearly audible despite YT audio compression.
    Interconnects and speaker cables are clearly audible, enough so that preferences can be reliably discerned.
    I get it that fine nuances/imaging/sound staging/layering etc may not be fully conveyed but decent AV recordings can very usefully convey the overall nature/vibe of the DUT.

    • @xxxYYZxxx

      Offsetting the upper section helps with diffraction. By aiming the speakers straight forward, the diffractions go off to the side and away from the listener. These were designed specifically to look "old school" per public demand, not to minimize diffraction. Danny's other designs are narrow baffles or even open baffles.

    • @Grommet2007
      @Grommet2007 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's likely that the passive high pass on the top speakers will not "burn power". If implemented correctly, it will present a high impedance to the amp at low frequencies, and therefore consume low power at those frequencies.

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Passive filter don't burn off amplifier power. The reason these have an internal high pass filter is that they can be used with any amp. Inline filters have to be based on the input impedance of each amplifier they are used with.
