The big downside to port tuning, is the loss of musicality. When you port tune, it's basically optimising a smallish portion of bandwidth overall- and then you end up trying to find songs with that sweet spot that doesn't muddy up , fall flat pr bottom out. It took me years of builds to try to dial in the "best of worlds" so i could enjoy all different types of music. If you listen to MUSIC, sealed is your best option. As for slot vs aero porting i think the attraction of aero is ease of design and build. Best option for slot is to kerf, and knowing what your optimum cabin resonance rests at

I build a lot of boxes, and this was a great video !! I prefer Aero over slot, if you build your enclosure correctly you can even make your port adjustable on the fly. Something you can’t do with Vented. I also don’t like the “chuffing” from vented. Maybe I’m the only one that can hear it, but just not musically appealing. I’ve had some great vented boxes over the years, but just prefer aero. Subbed, great job on the boxes ….👌👏
I'm guessing by vented you mean the slot ported as slot or aero they're both vented enclosures and as for adjusting a slot ported box on the fly you just slide in a section of wood or dense foam to reduce the height of the slot to lower the Fs tuning as you've effectively made the port longer just like you might add a block of wood inside the enclosure to reduce the Vas and raise tuning for burping rather than booming, slot ported every time here and tune low to push the group delay out of harms way.
@@g7vqedave2 I am curious. I am familiar with building and tuning boxes. You mentioned tuning low enough to where group delay is minimum. I am curious as to where you personally feel that frequency is..... in your opinion.
@@drrckhamilton I'm talking about my elderly mk 1 JL 13W7 here but from memory the Fs of that speaker was 27 Hz so using Win ISD my best box, again from memory, was a 7 cu ft tuned just below the speakers Fs at about 23 Hz. This wasn't a massively loud box but compared to a box tuned to give large gain at the vehicles cabin gain frequency say between 40 and 50 Hz for burping in competition or impressing bystanders it would be many Dbs higher in the 20 to 30 Hz range ie. a street bass box. Group delay will always be present in a ported box, more so when the box is tuned for max gain, and gives the flabby response that sealed box fans avoid but tuning the ported box low and spreading that gain to produce a flat response at 20 Hz where most sealed boxes can only dream of output leaves a more modest delay in the 30 Hz area and proper rumble.
I would like to see the same test with only one box in the car at the same time, I noticed that you never showed both subs to see how much the other sub moved from the pressure of the powered one canceling out certain frequencies.
Great video and great comparison!!! Very informative and very interesting in the final results!!! I still personally prefer the Aero port!!! I would assume that when it comes to listening to certain songs or certain kinds of music you could possibly notice a difference between the two types of ports!!! Is that correct to say??? In the time that i been doing Car Audio i have used a sealed box and Band pass box!!! I have never really used a slot ported box!!! I guess the best way to know is to listen to both kinds of ports in person to notice the difference between the two!!! I have just subscribed to your channel!!! I decided to give it a try since this content was very interesting to me!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks so much! Yes best thing is listening side by side real world and decide which you like better. Both can sound good. With audio there is a lot of personal preference and really not as simple as one best thing for everyone.
If you are that close to frying your coils you should buy a better woofer while you can still sell the one you are currently using. That being said, if you have the ability to run a slow test signal sweep on your ported box, you can actually visually see where the port is tuned. It will be the frequency where your woofer moves the least and the port moves the most air. With a large port, sometimes it will almost make your woofer appear completely stopped with almost no excursion, but the port will be moving massive amounts of air. This is the freq where your woofer will suffer the most. Because this is also usually the freq where you get the most SPL, and it is also the freq you love because you can really crank those tunes up with that magic freq. This tuned freq is also where your impedance will be the lowest and put the most load on your amplifier and get it hot and get it to really crank out that one bass freq. All the while that voice coil is barley moving and barely getting any cool air pumped around it, and it is getting hot, then your woofer goes Poof! How do you get around that? What's the answer? Choose a smaller port, a smaller port will not control the woofer movement as much at the tuned freq and the woofer cone/voice coil can move up and down more and get the cool air moving around it to keep it cool. Make sure to round and smooth the smaller port ends to keep the chuf away. Yes you will decrease your ability to play that one magic bass freq, but your amplifier will love you for it, your voice coil will love you for it, and your box will have a better flatter response.
One test that would make this fair is if both boxes had the port in the exact same place. Use one box at a time with the above tests and then the other.
They were both tuned and verified to be same tuning but because of the slightly blather area the slot sounded like it hit the lows better but probably because more port volume.
But one of the points of the video is when using a round aero port you don't go same size. They are supposed to be more efficient so you need to reduce the volume of the Aero port by 35-50% ( depending on your opinion) compared to a slot port. If you made them the same then the Aero port would be actually larger because it is more efficient.
Yes you have to calculate that into the equation when calculating port length. But that doesn’t affect tuning Besides the fact that you essentially need to deduct the length of the flare because once the pipe starts to flare, essentially the port stops at that point then. Then you are just accounting for end correction, factor.
I always found that although an Aero port chuffed audibly when in your face, overall it ended up sounding more ballsy and better when listening from the Driver's or optimal position, with the sub in the rear (in a hatch or open environment). When inside a trunk in a box separate from the drivers compartment (not on a baffle), they are difficult to distinguish and end up taking on characteristics of a BP.
I wonder why in the two testa it showed differently, I am a slot port guy just because I can nail the rune every time and get exactly what I want for port area but aero is easy to tune with
I mean yes but also no. Yes port area affects spl and the peakiness of the box but the benefit of the aeroport is you can use roughly half the port area and not have port noise. This saves airspace overall. So it's situational. The aeroport could save you enough airspace to build the box bigger and give a better power efficiency. Personally I prefer aeros due to ease of build but ports can be any shape as long as the resistance added by the area is calculated to the end needs.
The whole purpose of this video is for fun but also, if you do some research, you do not equal the size going from a rectangle to a round port. This is a whole opinionated deal with this aero ports are supposedly more efficient so you’re supposed to be able reduce their size by 35 to 50% or whatever someone’s opinion is. And be equal to a slot port. Think about it how many normal low end or mid range 12 do you see with a 6 inch airport unless it’s some crazy high-end 3 inch excursion SPL sub everyone uses a 4 inch airport for 12. For this subwoofer, a 6 inch airport would’ve been too much area. This is why I wish they made more sizes in round ports like 4 inch 4 1/2, 5”, 51/2” etc…
@@HiFiVectorAeros are more efficient, yes. If you make them smaller than You would a slot then your entirely defeating the purpose of using the aero port and building your box wrong. I’ve never seen a woofer manufacturer recommend different area for slots or Aeros, they just give a straight up port area recommendation. Just think about it a little.
there's a visual difference to me. The aero appear to have a subtle sideways oscillation and I can't help but wonder if it's a reaction to its position in the cab. Could have been camera angle.....
Good video. Just for the future maybe do a slow linear tone sweep so the meter can display each frequency with the correct SPL numbers, seems weird the slot port got louder on burp frequencies but roughly the same as Aero port with the sweep all at the same volume level. However i may have missed something you said.
Wow, I just installed two 2x4" areo ports in two different boxes (1ft³ each). And I was wondering this very question while doing it. Because the boxes are prefabed, and where sold as sloted, but where actually sealed. But I made them ported. 😂
How long overall was your aero port and what website do you use to figure out what you need to cut? I have a 4 inch pp aero port in the mail but its huge and i dont know exactly how much to cut for a 35hz tuning and a 2.7 net box for a single 15 on 800rms. Thank you.
Tell me the external box dimensions and the thickness of the wood. And I’ll let you know. Most of the box calculators are way off, so I don’t trust those. I just calculate myself. Give me the box info and I’ll let you know how to cut the PP.
@HiFiVector 22x16.75x15 the wood is 5/8 thick. Also is 35hz a good tune? It's a kicker comp r. I listen to rap and Spanish music with an audiocontrol epicenter. Thanks.
So this information is specifically for precision port brand 4 inch airport. Because the flared ends already have some specific port length in them. So for your box to 35hz cut the tube 2” long. And after you assemble the flares and couplers on both ends, this should make the total length of the Aeroport from end to end to 8 inches.
@HiFiVector oh 2 inches wow cause this thing is huge currently as it sits new its like over a foot long so I didn't know the middle tube will have to be cut to only 2 inches. Makes sense. Thank you for this info.
You might get different results if you put the aeroport box and the slot pox on the same side for example if your mic is on the passenger side floorboard the sub on the driver side might be loading different compared to the sub on the passenger side
Great video and a reference for the future. Nice that even with appreciable power applied, your phone didn't distort the sound and I guess they'll ALWAYS make some noise up close other than what's in the program. Since you've done the work, here's a new hard-on for everyone - Connect them 100% in parallel (!!!) and get the best of both, keeping the ports apart with a clever divider or rotate them. (*_*) PS---I spent EVEN more time admiring the boxes' designs than absorbing the information, lol.
I've been building subwoofer boxes for 40 years, and I say slot port for the win, there are many reasons why, but I don't wanna give away all my secrets! But you do need to round the slot port on both end also for the chuf.
You can't compare the "air velocity" that way. Because the surface space of the aero port is smaller, the moving air is more focussed (contained in a tighter area). So whatever air it is moving will likely measure higher. The slot port is so large that the air that it moves is so much kore widely sldisbursed that it simply is not an apples to apples scomparison. For strictly measuring the quantity of air passing through the ports, you would have to use something to capture the total amount of air passing through. Like using heavy plastic shaped like the port that then came to a single/same shape (smaller really) at which loint you could measure the quantity and velocity of the air being moved. But that of course would change everything about your desired test.
Another advantage of an aeroport is adjustable tuning frequency by easily lengthening or shortening the tube. Only ran slot port myself but I would like to try an aero!
Unless you have a hi res mic you can’t accurately tell frequency response. Why not make the area of the ports and the the lengths the same?

7 cu 😮
I would like to see the same test with only one box in the car at the same time, I noticed that you never showed both subs to see how much the other sub moved from the pressure of the powered one canceling out certain frequencies.
Good video. I’m definitely interested to see the part 2
Great video. I was actually wondering if there was any difference myself so thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks. I have a question. I have 2 12" Rockford Fosgate P3s and 1 12" P2. Would it be possible to run all e in the same box slot port box?
You can but mismatched sub’s sharing the same enclosure airspace is not ideal.
@@HiFiVector thanks
Ill make a separate box for the P2. Appreciate the answer and not just telling me to google it
Only thing I want to know is that aero port flared on the inside? Doesn't look like it and that does make a big difference in performance.
Aero port is flared on both sides yes.
How much should one of these cost
You should do a thermal on the voice coil. Cause personally I want the one that keeps me from frying my coils
What app is that I'd like to meter mine
It’s the SSA. SPL meter it’s around $400.
One test that would make this fair is if both boxes had the port in the exact same place.
Use one box at a time with the above tests and then the other.
hey mate, have you done 4th order band pass comparison?
No I haven’t
@@HiFiVector probably not worth it ,Just playing around with vent and 4th band on Winisd ,vent is loader and go lower
Which one gives more low and clean bass?
Both can if the box and port are designed correctly.
Did u check the impedance difference in the 2 designs by chance ?
I did not
so doesnt matter. Just choose what you like or how easy you want the build to be I do want to try a tube though.
but which one sounded lower?
They were both tuned and verified to be same tuning but because of the slightly blather area the slot sounded like it hit the lows better but probably because more port volume.
How do I get a box like that?
Great video, and the boxes look awesome!!! This was some really good content. 👍
Thanks so much!!
What is the xmax on these subs they sure seem to be flexing
25mm one way
Which is better for long throw sound
Both good it just depends on port size, subwoofer, etc… I prefer slot ports myself.
@@HiFiVector thanks bro ,i will choose slot ports now. I trust your choice🙇♂️
Would be nice if the ports were the same size.
Yea I understand. Great video 👍
How can I purchase one of the box...
I’m sorry I only make custom boxes for myself and I don’t sell to the public.
Since both boxes have the same outside dimensions, isn't the slot port displacing much more internal volume than the aeroport?
The boxes do not have the same outer dimensions. They have the same NET cu internal air space.
what thickness plex did you use on these boxes
Try the test with equal port volume. Also the slot port test was 1hz higher in each test
I did that in the “ part 2” video check it out.
What about the aero ports funnel length??? That needs tuning too
Yes you have to calculate that into the equation when calculating port length. But that doesn’t affect tuning Besides the fact that you essentially need to deduct the length of the flare because once the pipe starts to flare, essentially the port stops at that point then. Then you are just accounting for end correction, factor.
Hey what kind of stain did you use ? Looks great !
Which is better for deep bass and reverb?
Honestly both are good a lot of it is just how the box is built.
Put the aero port outside the box?
How amps are you running on your alternator.
400 amp alternator
Cool test. I think it really just comes down to preference. I’d take either
I wonder why in the two testa it showed differently, I am a slot port guy just because I can nail the rune every time and get exactly what I want for port area but aero is easy to tune with
Do you make and sell enclosures like these?
I make my boxes but I don’t sell to public.
Dude what size speaker are thoughs
12”
Of course the slot port will outperform the aero since it has double the port area.
Needs a 6” aero not a 4”. He failed before even starting
You always going to have that one. Hey, shit was dope. Keep doing your that.
Dude that's awesome! What nice boxes, great tests! Very Very cool
Thanks for watching
What is that at 4:22, a fan-o-meter 😂.
Port vs silent vidio????
what the box measurement? i wanna try it out.
Which box a lot or aero? They are different dimensions because the slot port uses more area than the aero.
What is the color of the stain?
I’ll try to find out but the can is so old the label is gone lol
@@HiFiVectorawwee noo haha i was wondering what this stain was too
Which Motorola are you using please
It’s just an old one I had because you can’t stream music and use the meter app at the same time. So I use the meter on the old Motorola.
So witch one its better
Watch the part 2 video
Wow, I just installed two 2x4" areo ports in two different boxes (1ft³ each). And I was wondering this very question while doing it. Because the boxes are prefabed, and where sold as sloted, but where actually sealed. But I made them ported. 😂
You need to redo the test with same port area on both as well
Check the part 2 video
On music in my ride areo port\flare is king on lows 25hz to 40hz louder\forceful bass 4 door sedan
Yes 35hz will be great for your situation.
@HiFiVector oh 2 inches wow cause this thing is huge currently as it sits new its like over a foot long so I didn't know the middle tube will have to be cut to only 2 inches. Makes sense. Thank you for this info.
Slot port for sure.
(was judging from your 1st quick test)
I heard the difference of the gate.
I tend to like slot
You might get different results if you put the aeroport box and the slot pox on the same side for example if your mic is on the passenger side floorboard the sub on the driver side might be loading different compared to the sub on the passenger side
I did try that, and it didn’t change anything much so that’s why I didn’t switch when I did the video. Also SPL meter was center windshield.
What inches subs are those?
12"
OK let's run the same tests using a Bass 5K , and see what the differences are . lol
Also witch box had more "chuffing " noise at the peak volume ??
super cool comparison bro turned out cool 😊😊😊
Glad you liked it!!
