@Josu Crystal I think it's because they knew the daughter would refuse to an arrange marriage so they thought if they surprise her she would have no choice to agree, which is a shitty move from the parents.

@Josu Crystal Agreed, proper arranged marriages is basically when a parent shows you a guy or girl who they think might be a decent fit for you, you guys hang for a short while and then you tell them yes or no. What they did was a forced marriage.

My mom was too shy to say no on her wedding. She met my dad on vacation in Malta twice on two different vacations and they became pen pals. Later he came to Paris, and pressured her into meeting him even though she broke off contact at some point. She had to pick him up at the airport, and then he just... kind of stayed. My aunts and grandma all wanted her to not to marry him, they had a bad feeling ab him but on the wedding day she couldn't say no.
Turns out he was really abusive, when they had my older sister he made my sister sleep in a room downstairs and didn't allow my mom to go soothe her when she was crying. When mu sister and me got older he always set us up against each other, always favouring the one that sucked up to him more and always fighting with my mom to the point she was crying. They never showed affection towards each other, and I remember them kissing once in like all my life.
Fast forward a couple years, I was ten and my sister 13, he sexually harrassed her best friend. He wouldn't even have gotten to go to jail for that, which is pretty disgusting in my opinion, but he still ran away a year later. I renember being pulled out of school and driving to my moms great aunt that day, he had booked two plane tickets. Considering I was his favourite kid my mom suspected that he planned on taking me with him back to his home country, so she went to the police.
I now live with my mom, and while I thought he was innocent for a long time but when I was sixteen we had a long talk about him, and she revealed that in the confession of my sister's former best friend she had mentioned things that he would do when he wanted to sleep with my mom. I had kind of expected that, but getting the confirmation was still a pretty hard pill to swallow.
My mom is doing better now, and if these thirteen years of being with him have taught her anything it is to stand her ground and voice her opinion, which she does. She's a really strong woman and I love her a lot^^
I haven't seen or heard from him since I was eleven, and I honestly don't want to meet him again. Yeah, I missed him in the beginning, but I worked through that. I'm doing okay now :3. Just, y'know, different problems. Like school. Honestly, the next big test is the scariest thing on my agenda because after growing up under my dad, authorities and teachers really don't scare or intimidate me anymore. I'm pretty materialistic, unsurprisingly.

7:10 is exactly why the normalization of the idea that men are trapped by marriage with all the ball and chain jokes is really problematic. If all of society tells you that guys hate marriage then you'll think you're supposed to feel awful about it and go through with it when you don't actually want to.

    • @IkesPimpHand

That story at 4:47 got to me since I can relate heavily towards it.
I never had the best childhood, grown into a very naive and hopeful woman who thought the first man who found me worthy of love would be the one.
I dated and got engaged with a guy I met my junior year. Although he was charming and repeatedly said I was "better than other girls." He never actually had any patience for my needs and always seemed to have something to prove to everyone, including me. He constantly always made sure to talk down to me in arguments to the point I found my own opinions stupid, made me feel small, I lost my virginity to this man who convinced me the first times weren't anything special and ours certainly wasn't. I became emotionally sensitive, stressed, and cried myself to sleep but in the end continued to convince myself I was in love with him.
I left him right after I remet an old highschool guyfriend of mine (who I'll admit, I'd always liked), who genuinely cared for me, and after seeing what I became, coaxed me out of my shell enough to finally leave my (ex) fiance. Now he would've been just fine staying friends, but recently I've finally let my feelings out towards him and to my delight, he felt the same way! We happen to have a planned date to a Zoo on the 12th (Never went to the zoo before so I'm really excited!)

I guess I kinda am one. He was a friend since 2015, but was more friend-of-a-friend until 2018, and I noticed he liked me. I gave him a chance, and had been only dating a year when he (carelessly) proposed. His brother gave him grief for not being more thoughtful (His older brother got married earlier that year). I broke it off with him this past March, and Im happier now than I wouldve been. I think we're too alike as people and didn't mesh well. And I think it mightve turned abusive because I apparently emasculated him (I guess that happens when the woman has a vision and a man doesnt?), and I never felt like my true self around him, and he never really took interest in the things I enjoy and do compared to how I actively tried to engage him in his interests.
Relationships are a two way street.... Im reading the 5 love languages while studying the bible to fix myself up first.

Good on you! If you’re way happier out of the relationship than if you were still in it, then that definitely wasn’t the one for you. You made the right choice. I’ve gotta say that that was very brave of you to break off the engagement, as a lot of people can be scared to do it and regret it later on. I had a very similar experience and ended up breaking off the engagement as well. It really led to a lot of self-reflection and in recent months I’ve taken up reading my Bible more and generally focusing on what I like as well. Keep up what you’re doing and just focus on self-care and loving yourself!

SOOOO many red flags, but I was in love with the idea of being in love, the white picket fence, the whole 9 yards.
As we stood in front of the minister, and was asked if I took this man, etc, i thought "What would they do if i said 'no'?".
Not being big on drama, i said "i do", and, oh, how i wish i hadnt!
I knew it was a mistake on our honeymoon when i realized he'd hidden his ring under the phone in our hotel room. We got into a HUGE fight when i demanded he turn the car around to go back to get it.
He cheated constantly during our marriage, not caring whether it was with a man or a woman.

I didn't so much "run away" as my grandparents put me on a plane and sent me across the country. Let me back up.
My ex was an emotionally abusive asshole. His father was abusive, and he just thought that was normal. He put his hands on me a couple of times, and I was so broken by the time that happened that I just couldn't fight anymore. My grandparents took me in after someone we were renting from decided that he didn't like my ex anymore. No idea why, they were cut from the same mold. (He started sexually harassing me at work after that, but...unrelated.) My grandmother called my dad and told him what was going on, and he used his contacts in that city to get the skinny on my ex and his family. Less than a month later, my grandparents had convinced me to go home to my parents for a little while, since they missed me so much. I agreed and was packed onto a commercial jet less than a week later. To this day, I don't know who paid for it. Nobody will tell me.
My ex called me not long after I arrived and told me that I was so worthless. He expected me to come back to him, and he had no intention of ever visiting me. About a month later, one of his room mates, who was my friend in high school, called me. He apologized so many times before telling me that my ex had been bragging the night before about how he had been cheating on me for months before I left. That he loved that I was too stupid to realize it, and he had no intention of stopping. My old friend said that he and the other two guys there had agreed that one of them should tell me, and he volunteered because he knew me best. He told me that they had also decided to kick the creep out because they had all seen who he really was. I was a pancake, but I thanked him for telling me. One phone call with my ex to ask if it was true, and he exploded at me, calling me every name in the book and a few he was making up on the spot. When I got off the phone, my mom made me the biggest margarita I had ever seen, and my parents held me on the couch while I tried to drink it through my tears.
Years later, I'm still in therapy. I'm happily married to an amazing man and have two children. Thank God for my grandparents!

People SERIOUSLY NEED to know the difference between arranged and forced marriage. The one at 1:55 is NOT an arranged marriage. That is a forced marriage. It's common for people from a culture like that to call it an arranged marriage because they want to sugarcoat it. This word has now been misused this way for so long that people associate 'arranged' with forced.
An arranged marriage is that both the bride/groom and their parents as the same amount of say in accepting the partner in marriage, where a love marriage is primarily dependent on the bride/groom. Forced marriage is where one or both parties don't consent to a marriage. I don't know what culture it is or where the family was from. They should rid themselves of such a despicable tradition and end the abusive cycle.

I've got a two for one special on this. I dated my ex about 13 years ago. He was so charming the first year and proposed soon after and I (not even of legal age) said yes. He said we'd get married on my 18th birthday. Fast forward a few months and he became very emotionally and physically abusive and tried to manipulate me with the ring, calling me his property and saying I now have to do everything he says. I ran for the hills not long after and am so glad we aren't married. Fast forward to 2 years ago, he meets a very young girl again but is now in his 30s. Proposes to her within 10 months and she left him about 8 months later. She contacted me to talk cause she knew who I was. Apparently he used her social media to stalk me and my family. And he treated her the same as he did to me. Now he's bald, still alone and lost out on two great women. I'm now married for 6 years and have 2 sons with together with my amazing husband. When I spoke to other ex, I told her it will get better. Literally a rock is better.

We had a really rocky relationship since we had never been on a date, and we had been hiding our relationship from her crazy homophobic mother from the start. We had been together for 2 years at that point, and I knew she wanted to propose for about 2 months (she told me she was thinking about it). I had left her in november but she convinced me to come back and turned out she couldn't come to her bestfriend's new year's party. She wanted to propose at that party. At that point I had serious doubts about our relationship, I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, but I could feel the gap between her and I ways to think and the way we loved each other. I loved her with all I was, she loved me in a spineless way. She never defended me, never did whatever she could to make things happen with me. I would have done everything in a heartbeat. So I left her 2 months later. It's been a year and 2 months now, I'm still thinking about her sometimes
