I’m not sure what the deal is with this specific review vehicle, but I own this car myself - and have zero problems with manually shifting gears or making the car pick the gear I want. Holding in the left (“ - “) paddle will automatically shift down; and if I am already in Sport/Manual mode, a couple of clicks on either shifter gets me instantly to the gear I want. I’m no professional car driver nor as experienced as Rory, that’s for sure; for my work I have driven a LOT of rental/hired cars with flappy paddle shifters over the last 10-15 years…and for me this BMW is the *only* car I’ve ever driven where the paddle shifters are INSTANT in their response. Other cars, paddles are more of a suggestion. In this BMW I barely let go of pressing the paddle & the car is already in the gear I want. So I’m not sure if it’s just that press car or something else - but it’s definitely not my experience. I loved that response specifically so much that it was one of the top 3 reasons why I traded in my manual gearbox car for this one.
A cracking car I’m sure. I own the previous generation M240i and ran a G42 220d for 2 weeks when the local dealership gave my car amnesia. Really warmed up to the G42 and it’s a proper follow up to the F22. I can imagine with the B58 it would be sensational, if a bit heavy. Still, not available with a manual so not for me but a completely unique offering in the marketplace.
I'm probably biased because I have the same whip as you but I dont think I'll ever warm up to the looks of any g series bmw, none of them have that heritage anymore angel eyes, sleek styling the light frame, just a shit direction imo but I guess new looks always needs time to grow on people
Everyone seems to be arguing over semantics and personal preferences. This car, as with all cars, exist to appeal to the differing preferences people have. Some prefer the M2. Some prefer this. All for their different reasons. Let them. Both are good cars in their own right.
I gave it a bitting last week with a GS450H F-SPORT performance hybrid despite my car being heavier. As guess what.......is soon will be visiting the dealship for some CHECK ENGINE
Let's give this some context. I have a 2007 330d SE model with a custom rolling road map to 290bhp, and a gearbox map. It produces 600NM torque, or 505lbs/ft in old money. It does 0-60 in about 5 seconds, but the real issue is the torque. It is the same as a 5 litre superchanged Jaguar F Pace SVR. It's on Michelin Pilot sport 4's. It handles. The whole package cost me less than £8K.
Those older diesels are gradually being effectively excluded from big cities through emissions charges. Perhaps why the package is reasonably priced. But if that’s not an issue (ie you rarely drive in cities) and you don’t miss the latest tech that’s sounds like a good option. No warranty though if it goes bang or something costly fails.
@@crimsonelite6882 Amazing cars and anyone with petrol in their veins would love how they feel and drive. Staggering high levels of performance and presence. Genuine supercar for Cayman GTS ish money. The ‘NO’ comment is probably in reference to the potential financial trauma. Without qualification, it could just as easily be ‘Yes’ They have proven to need replacement engines, clutches and gearboxes, which could equal the buy price for a decent tidy example. The suspension and steering rack are all run on the same hydraulic system, which can and do, easily cause £30k with mayhem if it goes wrong. Don’t even think about one with carbon ceramic brakes! If something like a window switch breaks, you could face a £3k bill. Many custom and bespoke components! If you can afford a warranty and the insurance, plus a couple of tyres and a service each year, then go for it I say. But that is possibly approaching £10k in planned running costs per year though. Some fairly large contingency will need to be taken into account for the unfortunate, or unforeseen. You could go and buy a 718 GT4 and spend 1/10th of the running costs, with zero contingency required. No warranty to buy and just give it to Porsche if it has an unlikely issue. Better in a lot of ways, for similar money to buy. One is a supercar though, while one is a good sports car. Have you got the means to take the risk? I know I haven’t Thorny Motorsport / Bell & Covill and some others have specialised in servicing and maintaining the older McLaren models. Even offer warranty programmes etc.
Does the 2023 line of 230i/M240i series cars now come with iDrive 8 Operating Systems, and the new large curved display? This video might already be outdated from the last two weeks of design updates.
I've got the previous M240i and this car feels a bit too VAG group for me, kinda like it's lost it's the naughtiness, although not trying to kill you is sometimes a bonus I suppose 🤷🏼♂️
@@ShogunsDojo yeah I have an e61 n54 and any new loaners I've had feel more like a Lexus than classic BMW. Even more than weight / sound the worst thing has been completely dead steering since the switch to EPS even tho Porsche figured out how to make it good
I owned the 2018 model, and this new one is more powerful, much quieter, much smoother, and just feels more refined. I guess if you’re tracking the car maybe I would agree with you, but for daily driving, it’s great!
I have the previous generation M240i and although I might be a little biased, I much prefer it over this new one. It's much more elegant and attractive, has a better sound with out the PPF, is almost 150kg lighter because it doesn't have AWD and is available in a manual. Also, BMW's new digital dials are pretty horrible to look at. There's just something about having analogue dials. Bit like having a classy watch over a Casio.
Remember when cars were hand drawn, the lines the flow, it's organic, now we have some idiot with an iPad and the line tools, edges and angles everywhere.
Wrong word, better. That is too simple. The adaptive suspension helps makes the M240i as very worthwhile daily driver. But it is not the same type of car or for the same driver in some cases. I can appreciate the value and power of the M240i, however many M2 Comp owners choose prefer the connection, braking, trackability, and ability to play, drift and autocross our cars which the M240i is not as adept, and may not have the same feel as the S55 and the non adaptive fixe suspension, more precise steering, and superior braking..
Really nice car, would love to own one. Only thing i don't like is that the taillights are upside down, looks wrong. And the counter clockwise rev counter, meh. But can be costumized so that's a bit of okay. Slap on some good tires, an exhaust (with dp) and tune on and just enjoy it everyday.
It might be quicker than an M2, but I wouldn't sacrifice beauty for speed in this instance. I would still rather have an M2 over this monstrosity any day, what was the design team smoking?
Amazing video as always, the camera work spot on as usual, and the writing is straight to the point. I am thinking about buying a BMW right now. Choosing between the M240i and the M440i, same engine, the only differences being the better tech in the 4 series vs the 2 series. Do you think the tech and cooling seats are worth the extra money ? :)
@@TheMasterNinjaRyu Yeah, I know, it has the new 'Wide Screen' now. The 4 series has the better Laser Lights, Cooled seats, retractable tow hook, and some other tech. So I was curious if all that is worth the extra
@@Zisuen the m440i is also heavier thus less dynamically capable (much slower than the m240i around tracks according to fastestlaps) and slower accelerating
So I’m just gonna preface this buy saying I’m an Audi person. I love the idea of having a fast powerful AWD car that you can daily. This is why I’m an RS3 person. However I have always understood the BMW fans. The reason to choose an M2 over an RS3 is because you prefer the RWD, manual gearbox, mad amounts of power type of recipe. This car seems to be offering something BMW fans aren’t really looking for. I can say that if I were looking to buy a BMW in this segment I would go for an M2 competition w/ Manual. If I was looking for an AWD, Auto/DCT, powerhouse…I’d just choose the RS3 instead maybe? Idk just my thoughts.
I think you're completely missing the point about this vehicle. This is an M-light car, they are typically more catered towards being a daily driver as opposed to super high performance car such as an M2 or an Audi RS3 which would be harder to live with if you are driving longer distances each day. I actually have the new M240i which I picked up 2 weeks ago and I'm absolutely loving it so far, I had the choice of this or an M2 competition but I went with this for the all round usability and straight line performance, it's not perfect though I do wish it was louder!

When it comes to everyday driving, the M240i is perfectly capable of both performance and daily use.
Ordered a Z4. Family situation meant a back seat was needed; changed order to M240i. Things could be worse!
I gave it a bitting last week with a GS450H F-SPORT performance hybrid despite my car being heavier. As guess what.......is soon will be visiting the dealship for some CHECK ENGINE
It's like Jurrasic Park meets Barney, love the purple
@Rory which would you personally choose the BMW M240i or the Audi RS3?
I am not Rory but I will choose the BMW M240i over AUDI RS3
Awesome reviews always love watching your channel
M cars are very specific. And these cars are more of an everyday livability. I ordered an m2 but I also live somewhere where everyday I can open it up
Have a beautiful day Everyone
Don’t understand why they didn’t had a manual to the m240i?
Funny how that's your view of a bright day outside 😂😂, great car by the way
Let's give this some context.
Which car would you recommend i am looking at buying a new m240i or a Audi S5 coupe vorsprung
Hey Rory, I like your car reviews very much and there is a question. Is the McLean mp4-12c a good choice?
no

Amazing cars and anyone with petrol in their veins would love how they feel and drive.
Staggering high levels of performance and presence.
Genuine supercar for Cayman GTS ish money.
The ‘NO’ comment is probably in reference to the potential financial trauma. Without qualification, it could just as easily be ‘Yes’
They have proven to need replacement engines, clutches and gearboxes, which could equal the buy price for a decent tidy example.
I know I haven’t
Thorny Motorsport / Bell & Covill and some others have specialised in servicing and maintaining the older McLaren models.
Even offer warranty programmes etc.
BMW has just updated the M2 and starting this year it will have the new iDrive 8 displays (like the 3 Series 2023 and i4)
And it's the perfect colour for me!!
Now that Rory said it looks like SId from Ice age I can't unsee it
That front end look comment is spot on.its hard now to unsee it 🤣🤣☠️
Thanks for the informative video I would like to know your opinion about getting m240 or m440 if I don’t care about rear seats
Does the 2023 line of 230i/M240i series cars now come with iDrive 8 Operating Systems, and the new large curved display? This video might already be outdated from the last two weeks of design updates.
it actually looks great with drl and in motion
why does the cockpit look so different to the german model, which gets the new wide screen thingy like the i4?
I've got the previous M240i and this car feels a bit too VAG group for me, kinda like it's lost it's the naughtiness, although not trying to kill you is sometimes a bonus I suppose 🤷🏼♂️
I know what you mean. It’s like it’s built for less competent drivers compared to the last car but on the other hand it is more capable.
BMW doesn't give a shit about driving experience anymore. They all about the numbers and being numb commuter cars now :(
@@papa_pt we just have to buy/keep the older ones that we prefer. They’re lighter and sound better anyway.
Just ordered mine and all the new ones will get the updated idrive 8 interior. I still haven’t seen it in any of these videos though.
I really can't unsee it now😂😂😂😂😂
I have the previous generation M240i and although I might be a little biased, I much prefer it over this new one.
The Motech version of this car is how it should have come from the factory. Looks amazing.
Can you show us the camera you use to shoot the video details with?
I quite like this BMW. Not the BMW fan but idk, i just kinda like it now.
Remember when cars were hand drawn, the lines the flow, it's organic, now we have some idiot with an iPad and the line tools, edges and angles everywhere.
does it come with a subscription option? ^_^
Nice watch 👌🏿
Really nice car, would love to own one.
Only thing i don't like is that the taillights are upside down, looks wrong. And the counter clockwise rev counter, meh. But can be costumized so that's a bit of okay.
Slap on some good tires, an exhaust (with dp) and tune on and just enjoy it everyday.
The entire iDrive system in the M240i is already outdated. As of this month all new builds will come with iDrive 8 which has a different dash display.
All M240i Xdrives being built henceforth come with iDrive 8.
@@TheMasterNinjaRyu Yeah, I know, it has the new 'Wide Screen' now. The 4 series has the better Laser Lights, Cooled seats, retractable tow hook, and some other tech. So I was curious if all that is worth the extra
@@Zisuen I would say not seeing as the 4 is worse looking imo as well as not being as good to drive 🤷🏼♂️
@@Zisuen the m440i is also heavier thus less dynamically capable (much slower than the m240i around tracks according to fastestlaps) and slower accelerating
M340i looks the best out the three
Why haven't you reviewed CLA 45 s
Nice
Great video mate
@@gt6123 I get where you’re coming from actually, that makes sense. Do you think we will get a new generation full fat M2 that will live up to the previous one? Keen to get your thoughts
@@gt6123 And just quickly, I think it’s a sad time for car lovers everywhere, no new car is loud enough. Especially when we consider the fact that these cars were talking about are high performance vehicles. I wish they were allowed to be as loud as they would have once been you know
@@hejhapiran5177 I’m not that sure that we will you know. The reason I feel that way is because the previous generation was so special and not to mention a lot more affordable then the incoming M2, it’s rumoured that the start price for one in the UK will be over £60k which is crazy! I’m sure it’ll be a brilliant car to drive round a track and will be incredibly fast but the inflated price will put people off. If you’re looking for a new car for over £60k I think you may as well go for an M3 or M4 but that’s just my opinion
@@hejhapiran5177 I totally agree, it’s such a shame that new cars don’t sound good anymore, the emissions regulations have ruined it and there’s nothing much we can do unless we modify them!
I love the idea of this car. Had the M140i and it was crying out for xDrive. Unfortunately it's just too expensive for me now ☹
Respect for the YM 💪
I saw quite a lot of people saying this car looks bad and I'm like wtf is wrong with you.We should be happy BMW didnt give it those terrible huge grills.Even beside that this car looks great on its own,car guys should be positive about this car so BMW might make more designs like this
I ilke the oversize kidney grilles too. Those triangles under the headlights (foglight area) seem like an afterthought, like the rear diffuser. All in alll great car, great review... oh a night shot of the interior would have been nice!
Chocolate dial on the rollie?👀
Great option against golf r,, s3, etc etc … but sooner the last gen m2 comp
You know a car is no fun when it's fast but doesn't feel like it. You're never going to feel like you're going fast even whilst breaking every speed limit by miles. Not a good recipe.
trust me, this car feels fast as hell
I have a brand new one that i've put 5k miles on so far and when you step on it you get thrown back into your seat
