LinusTechTips One thing I really miss is outdoor unboxings/reviews though. I know I'm just a random guy on the Internet but please do them more often Linus :)
There's really not a lot of point in doing 60FPS on a review video with so little movement. It would just make files crazy massive and hard to edit for very little gain. 4K is a much better option now that the monitors for it are getting in a decent price range
Stick with 24fps for that film aspect. These 60fps obsessed gamers just don't understand that product reviews aren't like action games. Save your hard drive space, make your workflow easier.
***** That's a bit of a self-defeating argument. A lot of their reviews actually INCLUDE video game footage. And for those 60fps is definitely warranted.
You are right that it might not be that useful for them right now but must you be that harsh? After all a lot of the time they are shooting video of equipment designed to be used for 60 FPS gaming and if the video will include any footage (Something I'd like to see more of) then it would definitely be improved greatly by new 60 FPS video on youtube I mean I get your points, I really do, but gaming is a very popular medium, more so than even movies now when it comes to entertainment, the paradigms of video will change as more gamers grow up and people will start feeling more comfortable with 60 FPS there's no need for it right now but that's sort of like preparing for 4k which is the point of the video: You gotta know what it's coming and be ready.
Hey Linus I love your videos. I would love to see you do a video about the different ways to make money through youtube, the pros and cons of these different methods and how you were able to create and maintain a sustainable business model through your content creation.

I still remember seeing first 720p TV about 15 years ago going for 4000$+. Now you can get 1080p TV for less than 400$. Same will eventually happen to 4K. Currently I find it too expensive to invest in it and quite frankly a bit pointless.
Linus, you pointed out something about yalls videos that I agree on and appreciate. Yall are very professional in your presentation of the material and preparedness. While I no longer game that much I still love all this computer stuff and these videos keep me coming back for more. Congrats on lasting this long on TH-cam!
I always watch your video in 4K (on a 1080p monitor) and it legit looks better than 1080p. I hope TH-cam will allow more people to uplaod in 60fps (now it's only for some gaming channels)
It's because of the youtube transcoding. When you upload a video, the best-looking one in the native resolution, may it be 720p all the way up to 4k. Under the native are down-converted version, that are not as sharp as if you directly uploaded a version of each resolution. Hope it helps to understand better =)
Arkum What you said had nothing to do with Mario's comment though. He likes to watch 4K because it downscales to 1080 quite nicely (higher bitrate) Hell you might even call it supersampling.
SpartanSK117 Oh, I didn't know. I thought TH-cam enabled it for a few gameplay channels a few days ago. Nice video by the way (watched your newest Warframe video). Arkum It just looks better in 4K (even when downscaled to 1080p on my monitor) It has nothing to do with native res in this case.

Thanks for the interesting video! I've been around here for a long time and I'm glad to see that the quality of your content has improved so much over the couple years.
***** yeah i know,4k content is fucking huge,if u follow mkhd in fb you can see the amount of gbs in one vid lol,but i was asking just to be sure, thanks
***** yeah i know that too lol,but it capture much more detail, the photos looks so damn sharp lol,in Android L we are going to capture photos (idk if videos too) in RAW 😃
MsMonster128 there are already some devices that can shoot raw but I wouldn't count on it over my actual camera. But one can say, the best camera is the camera that is on you.
Why spend so much money to record in 4K when such a tiny percentage (I'd assume) of your viewers even WATCH your videos in 4K? Seems like a bad investment if you ask me.
4K video is a much better investment for these kinds of video's then 3D or higher framerates. Although only few people own a 4K monitor at this point, prices are dropping and the quality and amount of models is increasing fast. And even if there aren't many people who have 4K monitors, there are also those who have 1440P or 1600P screens, even on tablets or phones. Also, due to how TH-cam compresses the data, 4K video looks better then 1080P even if you only own a 1080P monitor.
External monitors are SO crucial for production. Partnered with the viewfinder, external monitors make keeping shots in focus so much easier. While the viewfinder gives the most accurate representation of what you're capturing, it's also a little difficult to tell if you're in focus or not. Love your setup! As a broadcast student, I'm drooling. The muffled audio on the other hand... Is it because of the microphone placement? I've noticed it on and off in a couple other videos, but normally it isn't an issue. Either way, thanks for a little behind the scenes peek at Linus Media Group!
I recently upgraded from a 1080p monitor to a 1440p moniter and im not upgrading again for a while but i do notice a difference in games in 1440p ultra
60fps looks horrible for 99% of the content they do, it only starts benefiting having 60 when you do a lets play or a review of a game, not stood behind a product telling us about it
TheThorbob well maybe I want my tech review to have eerie similarities to maury-like reality shows so I can harken back to times when I only had shitty cable TV and watched horrible people scream at each other for an entertained audience. EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT
***** Because that would KILL their storage devices. They already have a hard time as it is. (Linus already stated that in the WAN show the other day with the 60fps topic)
***** I guess your one of the people that said the hobbit looked better at 48fps then. I would much rather have a better image quality then something that runs so smooth it starts to look strange
by the time compression at youtubes end kicks in, pro-res 4k probably comes out as really nice 1080p/1440p at most, ive switched between 2160p and 1440p and they both look roughly the same and are a little bit softened in my opinion, you need to set your aperture smaller to get a greater depth of field otherwise the resolution is lost in boko or softer focus in background areas of the frame, I'd reserve 4k for product closeups and such. and if you want to save on compression size, run a noise filter after using a smaller aperture and stronger lighting preferably warmer lights for non product colour sensitive shots.
Serious overkill. You spent 10s of thousands on tech that will age and depreciate like a stone, but didn't put funds into good lenses that will hold their value for 10 years easily.
Watching this vid now in 4K on a 1080p screen.. PC and internet connection can handle it no problem, but without a 4K screen it's kinda silly.. But nice too see that you guys are one of the first few that can deliver (tech) content in 4K. I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon, would rather get a 1440p screen than a 4K at the moment.
60fps looks better in anything not just games. However if you watched the WAN show then they said it's either 4K or 60fps. Linus chose 4K so let him do 4K.
My feelings were more complicated so I decided to leave a comment. Linus, you have me drooling over here. I am salivating over your cameras and gear. Keep up the great work! BTW, stop messing with Branden.
1:59 The woosie battery that comes with it, The hand grip that comes with it The built in screen that comes with it, the built in zoom lens that comes with it, the built in SD Recording slot that comes with it
I barely notes difference from 720p to 1080p on my TV. On computers is more relevant since we are closer to the screen, but to be honest is not bad using 1080p with normal common size monitor. As a typical computer and TV user, I am far from caring about 4k. Although I understand the need for 4k for particular needs, like big monitors, super big TVs or projectors, also oculus rift would benefit a lot from 4K in the future.
Way, way, WAY more expensive. Once you add up the cost of everything else you need to make the cheapest Scarlet functional you're easily looking at investing at least $20,000..
You can get the cheapest RED "brain" (Scarlet) for about 8k. It's just the body. It doesn't do anything by itself. You need to build the RED cameras from parts like a computer. Cheapest RED camera system that can actually shoot something is this Scarlet-X "kit" www.red.com/store/products/scarlet-mx-collection-canon It's almost 14k and the next thing you need would be bigger SSDs, more SSDs, batteries, lenses. You'll end up using 20k *just to get started* for professional quality. Offtopic: The guys that make The Hobbit are using RED Epics. They have 2 RED Epics in one rig (to make it 3D) and i bet those cost at least 150k a rig. And they have few of those rigs... Damn. I read they have 30 Red Epics. And estimated camera gear cost about $2 millions.
What makes Linus's channel so great is the fact that he is step ahead. Lets see 1 or 2 years later who has 4k devices and how many channels are starting to go to 4k...
wow damn, Asif 4k was so hyped up such a short amount of time ago. I think it's wild how 4k was so new only 3 years ago and now its so cheap and accessible!
I know that Linus still tries to justify spending this much money on camera gear, but it's just way overkill. Dimitri and Eber from hardwarecanucks use cameras several thousand dollars less than this camera yet they still get better b-roll than anyone else on TH-cam (IMHO). More money does not mean better quality. Usually, but not here. It's all about how you use the camera, it's not just about the camera.
A lot of those products such as those quick release plates are often extremely cheap to make, usually around the $5 or less. The companies just add massive markups because they often to not expect people to upgrade or buy replacement ones every year or 2, and they can get away with it when not many companies are making the product. (it is similar to buying a mattress where a company will charge $1000+ for something that cost about $50-60 to make, they expect you to not buy another for the next 15 years so they try to get as much out of you up front.
I'm glad I came across this! I've been waiting for you to make a video about the products you use! I would also like to hear you talk about how LinusTechTips came to be and the steps you went through to evolve your company. Fantastic info!
Thanks for sharing how your world goes round on the show and in the house! With 4K, it never seems to end and it get expensive real quick! Once you need one thing, you need another, then something else and then again, and again... and so on! That's why I hope you looked at my Ultrawide entry because I need more speed, size, and a great Editing monitor to do my stuff too :) It would be a blast to build a $10K system and mke a video with you Linus!
People complain that it doesn't make sense to get 4K displays because there's no content. Creators produce 4K content and people complain it's a waste because there's not enough people using 4K displays. Yes, 4K is not widely adopted yet but TVs are sub 1000$ and monitors can be had for around 500$. It's realistic for people to start getting into 4K equipment at a greater pace and now the argument of there being a lack of content is the main issue. So really, it's the best time for content creators to start putting out 4K, especially tech channels because being at the forefront in that field is important to being relevant. I would think any channel would benefit from being an early source of 4K content. As people get their new 4K displays they'll turn to creators like LTT so they can take advantage of their new equipment. As 4K grows, creators like LTT, MKBHD, etc. will grow with it. Part of being successful in running a business is catching the upcoming trends not reacting and grabbing whatever is leftover.
I really wish I had a 4k monitor now so I could enjoy the fruits of your labor. It's interesting to see the equipment it takes to produce such high quality content.
I know what he meant. you can watch 1080p with like 1mbit. not that much. I can watch 1080p on youtube on my phone network. maybe I'm lucky I have 125mbit dl speeds
Great insight Linus :) Guess it was TH-cam's fault xD but the scene transition (1:27) on a part of this video is epileptic inducing. Hope you iron it out, top stuff besides that minor issue :)
because you can tell the difference. the reason why 60/120 fps is importent in games is because the one who controls the game feels better. That has not much to do with the reason why 60fps gaming footage looks better for the one who only sees it on youtube. (no response time for the watcher)
Ronald Kelly that only because normal films are in 24fps and the users are not used to seeing films in 60fps. TalesOfWar yeah most people wont see the difference right away but if it is possible why not? it looks better for those who can see it and when it is a standard then everyone is used to it and can see the difference
Are you fucking kidding me. You give us 4k videos but there's no fucking point cause theyre still 30fps. I'd rather you upload 1080p 60fps than 4k 30fps.
They already said in the WAN show that there's no point in them uploading in 60 FPS unless they are doing a benchmarking video of a video game. The reason 60 fps is good for games is because there's no camera adding natural motion blur to smooth it out, whereas in film cameras add motion blur due to the way recording with a camera works (and unlike in games, motion blur in film actually looks good). The only thing that moving to 60 would accomplish for them is far larger file sizes, much more more editing work, and only slightly smoother looking videos.
I honestly couldn't care less about cameras and/or camera equipment, but I really enjoyed the narrative that Linus used to describe the process in getting to where they are now. Great job!
You guys have made a lot of changes that have pushed the boundaries of TH-cam production. And to be fair, it's been great so far! Just don't go to far and ruin it for yourselves...
just got a new samsung 65 inch 4K 3D tv.3d blue rays are insane. want to hook up my 4 290X's and see how they do. 4K is here time to upgrade your tv. and once i find a 4K 120hz+ monitor hopefully with freesync it's mine!!!!
You guys should have used the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100 4K camera (for that secondary camera), unless you guys are into the type of those DSLR Interchangeable lenses.
The future should be 180-360 degrees screen that hang in the ceiling then comes down "on top of you" when you use them. :) You can still see notice things up tu around 180 degrees then look to the side WITHOUT having to move your mouse to the side unless there is something there. :p
I remember your unboxing of the Sony FS700 like it was yesterday! You were so stoked about it, but at the same time like "Why did I paid $8000 for this" :D Ahhhh good old times of the blue door background. :)

If you record 60fps videos its file size is 3x higher than a 30fps file, 30fps is a good framerate for editing flexibility.

Stick with 24fps for that film aspect. These 60fps obsessed gamers just don't understand that product reviews aren't like action games. Save your hard drive space, make your workflow easier.
it only looks good at that low fps because of motion blur
***** That's a bit of a self-defeating argument. A lot of their reviews actually INCLUDE video game footage. And for those 60fps is definitely warranted.
No... 24fps is crap on 60hz screens, and requires interpolation to reduce judder. At the very least it should be 30fps.

It’s because they don’t understand what this camera actually can do.
There was 4K capable phones when this video was released. But obviously the quality wouldn't be anywhere near as good as on the FS700
And yet the best smartphone camera, even now in 2021, is still light years behind an FS700 in terms of actual video quality.

We don't have one. We have the older 2.5k one

real film guys use 24 because that's all you need :3
***** yeah i know,4k content is fucking huge,if u follow mkhd in fb you can see the amount of gbs in one vid lol,but i was asking just to be sure, thanks
MsMonster128 raw in general is fucking huge
***** yeah i know that too lol,but it capture much more detail, the photos looks so damn sharp lol,in Android L we are going to capture photos (idk if videos too) in RAW 😃
MsMonster128 there are already some devices that can shoot raw but I wouldn't count on it over my actual camera. But one can say, the best camera is the camera that is on you.
So, this was shot on the GH4? Looks outstanding.
Why spend so much money to record in 4K when such a tiny percentage (I'd assume) of your viewers even WATCH your videos in 4K? Seems like a bad investment if you ask me.
Currently
the 4k youtube option looks better even tho i dont got a 4k monitor.
I watch all youtube videos in the highest resolution available.
because you can downscale 4k to 1080p so it makes it look better rather than filming in native 1080p.
Yaaay, I can barely load 360p and people are moving forward to 4K... Hooraaaayyy... -.-
Get shrekt m9 I am watching in 4K!!! :D
Just wait in 10 years when everyone has google fiber. It will be a good time to live
steamedriice Fiber optics not required for 4K streaming, just a good enough provider.
haloShAdOwSnIpE well i can guarantee you that 1gps will get over 360 ezpz lol
Same here m8
LinusTechTips thank you for this sincere video!
This is one of the reasons that makes me see more videos from you guys :)
Keep it up!
so when do we get to see the water cool room
I recently upgraded from a 1080p monitor to a 1440p moniter and im not upgrading again for a while but i do notice a difference in games in 1440p ultra
4k is boring, upload your vids in 60fps
60fps looks horrible for 99% of the content they do, it only starts benefiting having 60 when you do a lets play or a review of a game, not stood behind a product telling us about it
TheThorbob well maybe I want my tech review to have eerie similarities to maury-like reality shows so I can harken back to times when I only had shitty cable TV and watched horrible people scream at each other for an entertained audience. EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT
TheThorbob what? EVERYTHING looks better in higher framerate. What is wrong with you people?
Records in 4K, has a kitchen as the background lol
Toby McDaid it's actually a set peice now n there warehouse
It's great that this camera was seen as overkill 9 years and now it's an affordable option for a lot of people
Serious overkill. You spent 10s of thousands on tech that will age and depreciate like a stone, but didn't put funds into good lenses that will hold their value for 10 years easily.
Probably even longer, I have a few lenses from the 60s and 70s that work better than their modern competitors.
Watching this vid now in 4K on a 1080p screen.. PC and internet connection can handle it no problem, but without a 4K screen it's kinda silly.. But nice too see that you guys are one of the first few that can deliver (tech) content in 4K. I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon, would rather get a 1440p screen than a 4K at the moment.
we dont want 4k, we want 60fps! i though linus was a fighter for higher fps!
He discussed this on the wan show
i know, why do you think i said this.
who is we?
60fps looks better in anything not just games. However if you watched the WAN show then they said it's either 4K or 60fps. Linus chose 4K so let him do 4K.
dude, for gaming you need 60 fps. 30 fps videos are fine....
My feelings were more complicated so I decided to leave a comment. Linus, you have me drooling over here. I am salivating over your cameras and gear. Keep up the great work! BTW, stop messing with Branden.
fuck 4k
I want to see 60fps videos from you guys
woaa...this vid was such a turn on.... luv the prices & hardwares shared....thanks Lunis n team... keep it up...
wait a second. if the camera is in the shot how are they recording? WE MUST GO DEEPER!
1:59 The woosie battery that comes with it, The hand grip that comes with it The built in screen that comes with it, the built in zoom lens that comes with it, the built in SD Recording slot that comes with it
Its overkill, but at least you admit it. Unlike random frankp, thats guy does not need 4k spots
ikr 😂😂😂.
Is that a fucking radiator above the camera?
Such a cool behind the scenes vid guys. There is a lot that goes into this show.
1:26 editing fail
or not.
That looked like it was intentional, but idk.
Nice to see this camera - is use this camera a long time and i like it.
Current i use a Sony FS7 and the FS700 as a "B-camera"
Wouldn't it have been cheaper to get a RED camera?
Red is more expensive
WayZHC I think they have 48 red epic :), and they named each of them lmao.
WayZHC It'd be more impressive if they shot it in IMAX.
Linus, I am not surprised that you all would need to make upgrades like you have to continue making your content.
"The Sony is a bit overkill"
Spends nearly a quarter of a million dollars on 8k cameras 2 years later.
Not overkill at all - I really appreciate that I can watch your videos in 4k! :)
4k always make youtube crash in chrome for me, anyone else?
You need a 4k screen.
IJustWantComment downsampling?
IJustWantComment also, not all of them crash
But why would you watch 4k without having a 4k screen?
IJustWantComment it looks better than 1080p on a 1080p screen due to downsampling, have you even tried it
I have a whole new appreciation of how much effort and money it takes to deliver these videos !
I'm wondering how many of your viewers actually benefit from 4k. Any numbers?
Even if you don't have a 4K monitor, there is a TREMENDOUS increase in quality, even at 1080p if you choose 4k, since the bitrate doubles or triples.
TH-cam also gives 4K video a much higher bitrate, so even at 1080 you're getting an improvement
Haven't noticed a big difference yet, going to pay more attention next time.
Also shooting in 4k then down sampling it looks much better
(it is similar to buying a mattress where a company will charge $1000+ for something that cost about $50-60 to make, they expect you to not buy another for the next 15 years so they try to get as much out of you up front.
normie... show this guy the red camera video...
I'm glad I came across this! I've been waiting for you to make a video about the products you use! I would also like to hear you talk about how LinusTechTips came to be and the steps you went through to evolve your company.
Fantastic info!
1080p 60 fps please! :D
Obligatory "First Comment" post.
Shit you're in quick
Lachie Black that's what she said
People complain that it doesn't make sense to get 4K displays because there's no content.
I agree.
video about your 4k camera not in 4k, unsubscribed.
Not Methods Boy did you make a fool of yourself there - 4K is there and running just fine.
Well he can't record it in 4K since his 4K camera is on the table the whole time.
Commenter Uh...yeah he can. Since their other camera does 4K too.
dumbass.
I really wish I had a 4k monitor now so I could enjoy the fruits of your labor. It's interesting to see the equipment it takes to produce such high quality content.
TH-cam 4K is essentially hi bitrate 1080p
Then I wish I had a 4k monitor AND access to their videos before they get uploaded to TH-cam haha.
Why even upload 4k? Barely anyone even uses 1080p
What? Almost everyone uses 1080p
NoCrow I think he means most people don't have the Internet bandwidth to watch 1080p, much less 4K
I know what he meant. you can watch 1080p with like 1mbit. not that much. I can watch 1080p on youtube on my phone network. maybe I'm lucky I have 125mbit dl speeds
NoCrow I think you are hahaha. At least for me, I cant watch 1080 without getting buffering every 5 seconds.
Time Warner Cable ftwwww
Manifest meh my wi-fi is 153mbps
EAST EU FOR THE WIN
Great insight Linus :) Guess it was TH-cam's fault xD but the scene transition (1:27) on a part of this video is epileptic inducing. Hope you iron it out, top stuff besides that minor issue :)
Why would you need 60 fps? This is not a game!
because you can tell the difference. the reason why 60/120 fps is importent in games is because the one who controls the game feels better. That has not much to do with the reason why 60fps gaming footage looks better for the one who only sees it on youtube. (no response time for the watcher)
Zyhmet What you said makes no sense he just said its not a game, 60 fps makes normal scenes look like a soap opera which most people don't like.
Ronald Kelly that only because normal films are in 24fps and the users are not used to seeing films in 60fps.
TalesOfWar yeah most people wont see the difference right away but if it is possible why not? it looks better for those who can see it and when it is a standard then everyone is used to it and can see the difference
Been wanting to ask for years why you reach for the mic box all the time ...finally, now I know.
Are you fucking kidding me. You give us 4k videos but there's no fucking point cause theyre still 30fps. I'd rather you upload 1080p 60fps than 4k 30fps.
Alot of the newer 4k monitors can do 60fps.
You want to see a 60 FPS video with litterally minimal movement and linus just talking? GTFO.
Ophelos It would be more correct to say that only a fraction of 4K monitors have ever been sub-60...
OMG TEH EPICNESS 60fps for games YES.
60fps for Linus's videos NO.
I honestly couldn't care less about cameras and/or camera equipment, but I really enjoyed the narrative that Linus used to describe the process in getting to where they are now. Great job!
Great video guys, love the T.A.R.D.I.S. in the background!
Congrats on the 4K. I'll be sticking to lower resolutions for some time though.
You guys have made a lot of changes that have pushed the boundaries of TH-cam production. And to be fair, it's been great so far! Just don't go to far and ruin it for yourselves...
4K videos all the way Linus! Thanks for going that route for your channel.
One of your coolest videos out! I'm a camera nerd and I don't even have a DSLR! LOL! :)
just got a new samsung 65 inch 4K 3D tv.3d blue rays are insane. want to hook up my 4 290X's and see how they do. 4K is here time to upgrade your tv. and once i find a 4K 120hz+ monitor hopefully with freesync it's mine!!!!
dude i love all your Work man the best stuff ever hope all is well
Well done Linus, love your reviews. Been following you for awhile now.
Love the transparency keep up the good work
You guys should have used the Sony HandyCam FDR-AX100 4K camera (for that secondary camera), unless you guys are into the type of those DSLR Interchangeable lenses.
You were so stoked about it, but at the same time like "Why did I paid $8000 for this" :D
Ahhhh good old times of the blue door background. :)
What about those Blackmagic "backup" cameras we saw on the walk-through of your space? Are they not the 4K versions? And if so, why own them? - Derek
We use one for wan show and the other for backup when the fs700 is tied up doing something else
LinusTechTips Wow. Thanks for the prompt reply. - Derek
4k looks great on my triple 1280x1024 monitors! thanks for all the good work guys!
p.s. check out how sharp Linus' arm hair looks!
When will we get a video of the whole room water cooling set up and or build process? I want it so bad!
Great to see the behind the scenes stuff.
Nice but expensive. I'd like you to do a video on some recommended equipment for beginner youtubers looking to make fair quality videos.
Really enjoyed this don't stop making these
