I like that Peach wasn’t the damsel-in-distress in this movie. Having Luigi be the victim makes more sense. For one, it makes more sense for Mario to go on a journey to save his brother rather than some chick he hardly knows, but it also really helps Mario and Peach have time together to get to know each other and possibly fall in love.
I mean they didn't have to write like he hardly knew her, that was their choice, it's not like in the games they are strangers to one another. But doesn't really matter they could have come up with anything cuz the mario games don't really have a cohesive story so it's whatever i guess

The first game we get any real lore from was Super Mario RPG, and in that one Mario is like a celebrity (there’s many examples to point to but the fact that the kid in Rose Town has a Mario action figure shows how well known he is in the mushroom kingdom). If he’s already a celebrity at that point, surely he’s been known for a bit before that. Then again, they don’t seem to be sticking to the game lore (more just drawing upon the games for inspiration) so it’s not a big deal anyway

Honestly one of my favourite films from this year, the writing is a bit lacking but the animation, voicing, music and overall presentation are amazing, and you can tell that the people who made this really love the games.
Another thing I loved about this movie was the fact that it was just fun like a kids movie should be, it didnt try to spread a “message” like the Barbie movie.
100%, especially the last part…which begs the question…why did other video game adaptations clearly not have people that love the games…because as much as the production team of Welcome To Racoon City swore the team was obsessed with the classic Resident Evil games, it sure as hell doesn’t show (it looks like they played the first 5 minutes of RE1 & RE2 and went, “well now I know everything I need to know”😒🫠)

The animators definitely wanted to include a cameo to pay homage to him, which is why this guy (names Giuseppe) is dressed similarly to Mario's OG design and sounds like his most-popular video game voice as of yet. Martinet also voices the brothers' dad.
As someone who loves this movie, I understand why critics do not. The plot is in all honesty very weak from an objective point of view, and the scale critics usually grade on weighs that heavily. It is what it is. But the good news is, that scale does not have to (and in this case, shouldn't) apply to the casual viewer!
Love this movie! It made $1.3 billion dollars at the box office! A sequel is in development, but its been put on hold due to the WGA/SAG STRIKE. Only time will tell if the sequel will get a 2026 release
Even upon finding out he's about to die, Luigi’s not freaking out cause he's STILL only thinking about Mario. All he knows is Mario was last seen traveling with the princess, Bowser considers the princess to be his “fiancee", and now Bowser is getting married. That soft “Mario” isn’t a plea for a rescue, it’s a plea for his brother to be okay.

In a world with so many crazy items that can grant you all kinds of weird and sometimes cool effects and abilities, it makes sense imo that the star is the most coveted. Even though just about anything else's effects are permanent until you take damage, the strategic potential of using a star right when you need it to have complete invulnerability is incredible. Just have to not waste it on the wrong moment.
Since no one asked, here's my Pitch for a Luigi's Mansion movie Opening scene is King Boo getting word of the Mario Brothers, and sending Boos to spy on them. By now, the brothers are firmly established in the Mushroom Kingdom as the Mario Brothers, and when we first see them now, they’re putting up fliers offering their services. But immediately, we can see that when someone stops to talk to them, everyone seems to be gravitating towards Mario. Which is fine, and even expected, as people know him as the guy that saved the Kingdom. But it’s not long before Luigi’s insecurities rear up their ugly heads, to the point where he feels like he can’t even tell Mario about them. What insecurities exactly? The one’s you’d expect: only being known as Mario’s brother, or the guy that got trapped in a cage that needed Mario to rescue him. Which get worse when someone makes an offhand comment that gets under his skin. It’s essentially a parallel to what their dad said to Mario: about holding Mario back now that he’s a hero. But here’s the secret: those comments don’t really bother him. It’s already been established that Luigi has been Mario’s #1 fan since before they even knew the Mushroom Kingdom existed. If people gush over Mario more, they’re just repeating what he’s known since they were babies. Why would that kind of talk start to bother him now? No. For Luigi’s insecurities to be as bad as we’re being shown, it has to go deeper than that. The real fear is that one day MARIO will see that, and just decide he’s done looking out for him. You thought he was heartbroken when trapped in the cage? NOTHING compared to what happens upon thinking of that. However long that takes, everything comes to a head when Luigi gets the notice about winning the mansion in the mail, and he decides to go check it out. Whether it’s because he suspects something is up or he’s too distracted by his insecurities, does not matter. What does is that he decides to go alone to prove he’s not just Mario’s little brother. And I will emphasize this right here and now: Luigi does not blame Mario for ANY of this. He loves Mario the same as he always has, if not more, and it’s that exact love why he’s so scared of losing him. He shrugs off Mario’s questions as to why he’s going alone, and leaves. Which then prompts Mario to check out the notice himself, and after some research, realizes Luigi’s about to walk into a trap, and runs off to try and stop him. While all this is happening, we need two different sets of flashbacks, wherever they make sense: flashbacks of them growing up, to show how their relationship changes into what it is now. And snippets of a more recent one, with Mario telling him he’s moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, offering him a chance to come with; Luigi panicking because a) he’s still traumatized by what happened, and b) he’s scared of losing his brother again if he says no. Eventually Luigi makes it to the mansion, and it plays out like it did in the game. I trust Nintendo’s ability to make sure it stays as true to the game as it can be. It’s still about getting rid of the painting ghosts and all that, but keeps coming back to the insecurities. And if there's a way to add their Twin Sense to the story, preferably when Luigi finds something of Mario's, that would be AWESOME. Mario, on his side, is not just trapped in a painting. The painting itself is essentially a pocket dimension where he can see everything that’s going on, as one of King Boo’s cruel torture tactics, but no matter how loud he screams or yells, Luigi can’t see or hear him unless in the throne room, because that’s where the physical painting actually is. It's revealed the Boos had been observing Luigi for weeks to figure out the best way to mess with him, and while they usually just do what we’ve seen them do in the games, they tried something different because Luigi essentially did all the work for them, and enhanced his insecurities to lure him to the mansion to trap him there. And of course, when he faces King Boo, he gets hit where it really hurts: the fallout of all those flashbacks: every time Luigi got hurt or was picked on, and Mario stepped in. Or only Moving to the Mushroom Kingdom to make Mario happy. King Boo laughing at him and saying how he’s so weak he can’t even fight his own battles, no wonder Mario got taken so easily. Luigi starts to believe it, maybe even starts crying, I won’t object, but then he hears Mario banging on the painting, making him look up. Whatever Mario says here is meant to get Luigi to look back again, and we see a flashback montage. Sure, Mario stepped in at first, but when Luigi got older, he started doing the same. And even had Mario teach him to defend himself, despite the fact that it scared the shit out of Mario every time he fell or got hurt. The very last flashback is of when Mario finally made him talk about moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, and Luigi admitted how scared he was about the whole idea. And you guessed it, Mario gives a bona fide Good Big Brother speech that ends with another Bro Hug. And THAT is what gives Luigi the strength to get back up and kick King Boo’s ass straight back into the painting where he belongs. Keep the game’s ending in there, or the fans will riot, then give us a Proud Big Brother moment after they’re home safe. Then it ends with them hanging up more fliers all over the Mushroom Kingdom, but now we see there’s a new thing added to their services: Boo Hunting. Oh yeah. And to keep with the first movie's continuity: soundtrack only has music from or before the year the game came out. This would be November 2001, so use your imagination.

The Luma (Little blue star guy) is the best character, he is that way because if you played Galaxy you would know they're entire purpose is to be fed starbits and once they are full, they shoot off into space and EXPLODE, creating a new planet. As a fan of Mario since childhood, I have to say this is my favourite movie based on a video game. Had many nostalgic moments and it reminded me of the days when I played my very first Super Mario and Mario Kart games on the Wii. Best animated film of 2023 so far.

I gotta say that I LOVE the subtle AND not-so-subtle ways they made Peach a strong character. Apart from her absolutely crushing the obstacle course in a puffy gown and heels, no less, she knows how to hold her own against someone else. Even her mannerisms like when she playfully punches Mario at 18:33 are cool combo punches from a trained fighter. Even then, she still wavers when she's very emotionally distressed, like when Bowser nearly defeated her at their "wedding." She was terrified for the Toads' lives more than her own. But ANYBODY under that kind of pressure would fail, much harder than she did. She's great, but not without flaws. I appreciate that. She's strong, feminine, and she's a fair ruler since she decided to give Mario a shot at helping her even when she'd just met him and knew nothing about him. And even when he failed the obstacle course, she brought him along since she saw no harm in him continuing to try.

The reason why they didn’t have the OG Mario voice actor be Mario’s voice in the film is because the guy’s really old and he can’t actually do the voice that much anymore. He can do small bits here and there, but for a full movie, he just can’t physically do it.
I'm so glad that this movie turned out the way it did. I went in with a critical mindset only to be charmed and made appreciative of the many throwbacks and hidden gems scattered around. Not perfect by any stretch, but extremely enjoyable. Unlike that Prince of Persia film adaptation, which I had been eagerly waiting for, being an ardent fan of the game series: only to be sorely let down. I pretend that it doesn't exist and isn't cannon.

I can already see they’re gonna go with Super Mario Galaxy for #2…they’ve made several references to how there’s a whole universe out there (the lumas, and so on), plus it’s an easy way to expand the story. I think we’ll see Rosalina in the sequel.

No. For Luigi’s insecurities to be as bad as we’re being shown, it has to go deeper than that.
The real fear is that one day MARIO will see that, and just decide he’s done looking out for him. You thought he was heartbroken when trapped in the cage? NOTHING compared to what happens upon thinking of that.
However long that takes, everything comes to a head when Luigi gets the notice about winning the mansion in the mail, and he decides to go check it out. Whether it’s because he suspects something is up or he’s too distracted by his insecurities, does not matter. What does is that he decides to go alone to prove he’s not just Mario’s little brother.
And I will emphasize this right here and now: Luigi does not blame Mario for ANY of this. He loves Mario the same as he always has, if not more, and it’s that exact love why he’s so scared of losing him.
He shrugs off Mario’s questions as to why he’s going alone, and leaves. Which then prompts Mario to check out the notice himself, and after some research, realizes Luigi’s about to walk into a trap, and runs off to try and stop him.
While all this is happening, we need two different sets of flashbacks, wherever they make sense: flashbacks of them growing up, to show how their relationship changes into what it is now. And snippets of a more recent one, with Mario telling him he’s moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, offering him a chance to come with; Luigi panicking because a) he’s still traumatized by what happened, and b) he’s scared of losing his brother again if he says no.
Eventually Luigi makes it to the mansion, and it plays out like it did in the game. I trust Nintendo’s ability to make sure it stays as true to the game as it can be. It’s still about getting rid of the painting ghosts and all that, but keeps coming back to the insecurities.
And if there's a way to add their Twin Sense to the story, preferably when Luigi finds something of Mario's, that would be AWESOME.
Mario, on his side, is not just trapped in a painting. The painting itself is essentially a pocket dimension where he can see everything that’s going on, as one of King Boo’s cruel torture tactics, but no matter how loud he screams or yells, Luigi can’t see or hear him unless in the throne room, because that’s where the physical painting actually is.
It's revealed the Boos had been observing Luigi for weeks to figure out the best way to mess with him, and while they usually just do what we’ve seen them do in the games, they tried something different because Luigi essentially did all the work for them, and enhanced his insecurities to lure him to the mansion to trap him there.
And of course, when he faces King Boo, he gets hit where it really hurts: the fallout of all those flashbacks: every time Luigi got hurt or was picked on, and Mario stepped in. Or only Moving to the Mushroom Kingdom to make Mario happy. King Boo laughing at him and saying how he’s so weak he can’t even fight his own battles, no wonder Mario got taken so easily.
Luigi starts to believe it, maybe even starts crying, I won’t object, but then he hears Mario banging on the painting, making him look up.
Whatever Mario says here is meant to get Luigi to look back again, and we see a flashback montage. Sure, Mario stepped in at first, but when Luigi got older, he started doing the same. And even had Mario teach him to defend himself, despite the fact that it scared the shit out of Mario every time he fell or got hurt. The very last flashback is of when Mario finally made him talk about moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, and Luigi admitted how scared he was about the whole idea. And you guessed it, Mario gives a bona fide Good Big Brother speech that ends with another Bro Hug.
And THAT is what gives Luigi the strength to get back up and kick King Boo’s ass straight back into the painting where he belongs.
Keep the game’s ending in there, or the fans will riot, then give us a Proud Big Brother moment after they’re home safe.
Then it ends with them hanging up more fliers all over the Mushroom Kingdom, but now we see there’s a new thing added to their services: Boo Hunting.
Oh yeah. And to keep with the first movie's continuity: soundtrack only has music from or before the year the game came out.
This would be November 2001, so use your imagination.

The Luma (Little blue star guy) is the best character, he is that way because if you played Galaxy you would know they're entire purpose is to be fed starbits and once they are full, they shoot off into space and EXPLODE, creating a new planet. So they live to die and it's essentially a great honor. Also what he says is not wrong by any means, people just don't like truth cause it shits all over their beliefs lol.

As a fan of Mario since childhood, I have to say this is my favourite movie based on a video game. Had many nostalgic moments and it reminded me of the days when I played my very first Super Mario and Mario Kart games on the Wii. Best animated film of 2023 so far.

I gotta say that I LOVE the subtle AND not-so-subtle ways they made Peach a strong character. Apart from her absolutely crushing the obstacle course in a puffy gown and heels, no less, she knows how to hold her own against someone else. Even her mannerisms like when she playfully punches Mario at 18:33 are cool combo punches from a trained fighter. Even then, she still wavers when she's very emotionally distressed, like when Bowser nearly defeated her at their "wedding." She was terrified for the Toads' lives more than her own. But ANYBODY under that kind of pressure would fail, much harder than she did. She's great, but not without flaws. I appreciate that. She's strong, feminine, and she's a fair ruler since she decided to give Mario a shot at helping her even when she'd just met him and knew nothing about him. And even when he failed the obstacle course, she brought him along since she saw no harm in him continuing to try.

I'm so glad that this movie turned out the way it did. I went in with a critical mindset only to be charmed and made appreciative of the many throwbacks and hidden gems scattered around. Not perfect by any stretch, but extremely enjoyable.
Unlike that Prince of Persia film adaptation, which I had been eagerly waiting for, being an ardent fan of the game series: only to be sorely let down. I pretend that it doesn't exist and isn't cannon.

Cranky Kong is in the DK games. He's basically DK's grandfather. He's actually the "DK" that Mario goes up against in the original arcade game.
Beforehand, video game movies were mostly seen as critical and box office poisons at the time. But, the late 2010s/early 2020s gave us the holy trinity that's now changing people's minds, *Pikachu, Sonic and this.* This, very clearly, was the biggest hit out of all of them, and will likely get the ball rolling for video game movies to become the next cinematic juggernaut.

I tell you this was an EXPERIENCE in the theatres.
I can already see they’re gonna go with Super Mario Galaxy for #2…they’ve made several references to how there’s a whole universe out there (the lumas, and so on), plus it’s an easy way to expand the story. I think we’ll see Rosalina in the sequel.

Oh I could definitely see them doing a Luigi’s mansion spin off, would definitely watch…maybe a paper Mario spin off, but I’d imagine that’s pretty far down the list as far as priority for sequels (and there’s no way they won’t make a sequel with the reception this movie got).
