That Luigi segment with the Dry Bones gives me faith that they could pull off a really good, light horror move with Luigi's Mansion.
Fr as someone who loves Luigi's Mansion, I loved that section and would be on board for a Luigi's Mansion movie.
Maybe if they use Boos?

Ok so for those who haven't played Mario Galaxy, the Lumas (blue star nihilist) actually CRAVE death because when Lumas grown up they literally super nova into making new stars, galaxies and planets. Then more Lumas are made form that explosion, it's basically a cycle of death with those things in the cutest way possible.

12:50 Well, not just full of it, those Toads are actually using the actual line from the original games. Everytime you rescued or met up with Toad, they would tell Mario that their princess was in another castle.
29:15 The whole Kart scene was so awesome to see in the movie. So many friendships tested, ruined, and absolutely demolished in those games. XD

That Luma was probably so fatalistic because it couldn't serve his purpose, which is to become something else. Some luma transform and combine to form planets, comets, stars, galaxies even entire universes depending on how many of them combine. I think some Luma can even become power stars.
So it's kinda like a Mr. Meeseeks situation

12:52 that's a reference to the original Super Mario Bros. game. At the end of every level, except for the very last one, you rescue a Toad who declares that the Princess is in another castle.
The racoon suit is called the Tanooki Suit & it showed up in Super Mario Bros. 3
The version Mario had, not only could you fly in it, but you could also turn into a statue for a little while.
When Princess Peach mentions that there's a whole universe out there with plenty of galaxies, that was definitely a Super Mario Galaxy reference. Asides from the fact that Bowser actually has a Luma imprisoned in his fortress, 22:18 there is another reference hinting possibly at the appearance of another popular Mario character if they decided to animate, write or produce a sequel to this film.
In the ending, a short theme from Gusty Garden Galaxy is played during the credits roll. That song is one of Nintendo's most popular fan favorites of the game and is unofficially seen as the anthem of Nintendo. I played hours upon hours of Super Mario Galaxy back when it came out. So fingers crossed that Rosalina gets a chance to make an appearance on the big screen.
I feel like they used those details to both set the stage for something potentially more grand with future movies, without being so blatant as to commit themselves to it in case those plans don't work out. That way if they do reach that point, then there will be signs pointing to it all the way back in the first film. Whereas if they don't, then those details will be little more than fun nods to the fans without any real significance. Either way, nothing will really be lost by those inclusions, because their meaning down the line will depend entirely on how the series goes from here. All thanks to being subtle, rather than shoving it in the viewers' faces as something important.
Love the movie. Love this version of Peach. Love the relationship throughout the film between Mario and Peach. 10/10 the cast was amazing.
I was happy that they added the dreaded Blue Shell to the Rainbow Road scene. That shell started so many arguments/fights among friends.
Really liked the movie. It had a sense of love and celebration of this huge franchise while making it super fun. It was a simple love letter to all Mario fans.

I adore everything with this film the references to other Nintendo franchises, the music, designs of the characters and how they look ripped out from the games, the story although it's pretty simple considering this is the first Mario Movie in pike 30 years when that one was recieved awfully it was for the better to play it safe and simple. Have tiny problems with it but they're so tiny then it doesn't change my reception on the film
I was sceptical when i learned that Illumination was the studio that was gonna make this one but i ended up liking it more that i expect. I really love the relationship between Mario and Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser works wonderful!
The funny thing about the blue star 36:07, it can get out...but doesn't want to. Like he mentioned, he's waiting for death haha.

The species is known as Yoshisaur Munchikoopa. Our Yoshi(the green) is actually named after his species. So his full name is Yoshi Yoshisaur Munchikoopa. So our Yoshi was in that egg that was a wedding gift. And now he's in the sewers of New York
I love the glowy star of depression😂 The movie was already perfect but it adds more to it. Probably my favorite character so far

I watched this back to back with Guardian of the Galaxy and if you didn't tell me it was Chris Pratt's voicing Mario, I wouldnt have known.
The concept of a family with a Nintendo that only belonged to ONE of the brothers is completely alien to me. Consoles were communal property here as a kid.
This movie is such a delight and one of Illuminations best movies to date! Jack Black was a massive highlight to me
In theaters, when the DK Rap started playing, me and a few others actually got up and started grooving and chanting.
I was happy when they played it too, I grew up with DK 64 & 20 years later I finally beat it 🙂

I really liked your reaction to the movie, and I even liked more that you saw Yoshi's post-credit scene since many movie reactors didn’t realize there was one.
The little blue glowie drop thing in the prison stole the show for me. Loved it every time it spoke. And you totally missed the last bit it did at the very end of the credits. I had no idea what it was so I had to look it up.
Luigi was an mvp in this movie when he saved Mario.
Not even Across the Spider-Verse could light a candle to this movie

The movie was good and had great nostalgia. Honestly lets just leave it at that. I don't feel the need to milk every success in sequels and spinoffs. Despite what Charlie Day and Seth Rogen want, I think Nintendo would just make a game as a un-official sequel or spinoff (Nintendo owns the rights to the film, so it's their decision). The movie already had so many references, even missed ones.

The Mario movie was awesome‼️ I saw it two times in theaters!! 10 out of 10! This was definitely one of the best animated films of the year along with Spider-Verse!!
It's funny that you mentioned King Kong. Nintendo was sued by Universal Studios in 1982 for infringing their IP King Kong - they said Donkey Kong was a ripoff of King Kong.
Now they are making movies and theme parks together.
The toonike suit you said was from the newer ones, is actually from the 3rd game , on the NES. It was the one that let you turn into a statue! :D The music that played when he had it on was also from that game
That star moment had EVERY gamer I know hum starman. I was so blown away by this version. We waited 30 years to get a film of THIS caliber(after the flawed first attempt)
When they went to meet the kongs. Missed opportunity to use welcome to the jungle
The way Bowser's airship entered into the real world reminded me of the way 2014 Thanos entered into present day.
Even the way Toad, Peach and DK got trapped by the rubble reminded me of the way the Avengers got trapped under the rubble.
So many references and fun scenes. So happy I went to see this in theaters

I'm glad they showed that Yoshi going to be in the next movie one of my favorite games as a kid was the Gameboy cartridge of the Yoshi game
I recently watched this movie with my younger brothers. The oldest of my younger siblings and I used to watch The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, when we were little kids; and I mean when it was new. So when we heard the show's intro at the beginning of the movie, we knew we were in for a treat. We had a lot of fun, with the rest of our brothers, looking for as many game references as we could find, in the movie.
I loved every Bowser scene. I’m glad him wanting to marry Peach was more than taking over the Mushroom Kingdom

My first video game was Super Mario World. I didn’t get to finish it back then, but I got to play it again on the Switch. Same for Donkey Kong Country.

The "racoon" Mario is the tanooki suit which was added in Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES in 1990. The cat suit is a much newer addition from Super Mario 3D world released for Wii U in 2013.
What people know and don't know about Mario always amazes me . There is basically stuff here from each of the game generations old and new and some things are in both old and new games.
So I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but since you kept mentioning Smash I thought I'd let you know... When Mario fights Donkey Kong, that is literally a smash stage they're fighting on. 🤣🤣👍

This movie is the definition of *By fans, For fans*. Yes the story could’ve been better, but this movie is still absolutely fun!
the story is basically the story of mario odyssey so imo i loved that they went that route it saves the 2nd movie for the actual mario bros story of rescuing peach if they do that.

@@thedarkknight2221 i feel you on that, it is the og story of super mario bros though and yeah this peach is more of a badass than the actual characters but with yoshi coming into the mix next time they will probably tweak the story to make sense of why yoshi will be crutch for mario in the movie i would assume but who knows as long as its as good as this one then im game.
Just off the top of my head they show standard and winged Koopa Troopas, Goombas, Piranha plants, bullet bill, bob-ombs, banzai Bill(Bowser calls it a bomber bill) spinies, the moray eel(from Mario 64), King Boo, King Bobomb, dry bones, sledge Bros, sniffits and shy guys. They refrenced Starfox, Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt, Game and Watch, Donkey Kong, Punch Out, Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew, Smb 1-3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Maker, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury. Basically it is an over 40 year love letter to Nintendo. As you call it the Fox suit is actually known as a Tanooki, which is a raccoon dog that is native to Japan. They also feature very heavily in Japanese folklore as mischievous tricksters. The first iteration of that suit was in the third of the original Super Mario Brothers Trilogy released on the NES. Recently they took the super Leaf power up from Super Mario Brothers 3 and we worked it to give you the Tanooki powers and I believe it was either 3D land or 3D World. But the power of flight as well as the tailspin attack were both present in that original game as far back as 1988 in Japan and February of 1990 in North America
Now to speculate who they might get to voice other Nintendo characters in subsequent films.
I would implore you both to watch an Easter egg breakdown of this film. There's a lot of callbacks to games over the years I think you missed. Nice reaction.
39:23 this is Racoon Mario. He was in Super Mario 3 on the NES. 47:45 the Yoshi egg was a wedding gift and somehow ended up down there.
Tanooki Mario. Racoon Mario is just the ears and tail. Tanooki Mario is the full suit. Which I would say is just semantics, given that Tanooki Mario is functionally the same as Racoon Mario in most games, had it not been for them both originating in Mario 3.
Although as a kid, I always distinguished them as Racoon, and Racoon Suit.
Super mario brothers 3 introduced the leaf for a racoon ears and tail giving mario the power of flight. The same game had a rare power upgrade to that which is the tanooki suit which adds the ability to turn into a statue as well as flight. It is iconic. I little disappointed we didn't get to see the frog suit or some hammer brothers action. But absolutely loved the movie.

The movie theatre had everyone- Gen X, Millenia, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. I even saw some Baby Boomers, though they didn't know much what was going on😂
Song made me cry every time I heard it because when the movie came out I was gonna go with my partner but it didn’t work out on that day. So that day I was just sad.
They definitely teased Mario getting the fire flower, everyone else got it but him lol.

I remember I was pestering my parents to get tickets for this movie because I have been playing Super Mario since the age of 9 (my first game I played being Mario Kart Wii I think?) and now at 16 my collection has just skyrocketed and I watch loads of Mario videos on TH-cam, so I felt I would be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of this movie. It was a blast and I cracked up at Bowser's cringiness and the Super Mario Bros. trailer!
Jack Black’s voice for Bowser is actually more than pretty good.

I agree with the summary given at the beginning. This movie is perfectly enjoyable no matter your Mario knowledge. But the more of that knowledge you have, the more you'll understand why certain scenes and lines are the way they are, or the more small details you'll notice in the background. So while you don't have to know about Mario to enjoy this film as a movie, it does help for enjoying it as a Mario product.
Guessing that the tanooki suit was a fox wasn't a horrible guess. Because in later Mario games, they actually made it so that while everybody else wears the traditional tanooki suit, if Luigi gets that power-up, he wears a fox suit instead.
It's pretty funny hearing you keep saying that the Tanooki Suit (Raccoon powerup) was from newer games because it originally showed up in Super Mario Bros 3 which released in Japan in 1988, the US in 1990, and Europe in 1991.
The 2011 Muppets film was also a nostalgic trip!
This is the only great Illumination movie in my opinion!

Which they probably did on purpose, so that in the next film they can establish the green one as something significant. Like, maybe green Yoshis are extraordinarily rare, so that the green one can be distinguished as the main one.

I love this movie but my nephew loves it more then I do he always wants to watch it with me and we saw it theaters and he became a fan because of the movie and the times he played mario kart with me and his big sister.
