Never get tired of that mini series. Listened to the audiobook recently on a long drive, it’s great how much the mini series really stuck with book even to the point of using direct book dialogue in the mini series script!!!

As for which hat it most resembles from his movies, I’m leaning towards The Commancheros and The Shootist hat.. Now I know that a lot of his hats had more about fedora front pinch crease in the crown. But these two movies really have the shape of the brim and the color, dead on I think. But for me the fact that it’s a John Wayne hat from the collection celebrating his bigger than life movie characters plus has a Gus crease, which so many of us have come to love from watching Lonesome Dove, makes this hat, just a culminationof iconic John Wayne collectors items with a nod to Gus. It’s also kind of nice that the initials on the inside match my own.

Hey now, Festus Haggen is who got me into hats in the first place 20 years ago. I've even made exact replicas of his hat. The character and natural wear on that thing is amazing and you can tell it was actually a very high quality felt. Poorer quality felts don't age the same.

We can thank the late John F. Kennedy for ruining the hat business. He didn’t want to cover up his hairdo or mess up his hair, so he was one of few men who didn’t regularly wear a hat back then. Unfortunately it caught on.

I started wearing an original Panama Jack hat back in 2020, as a summer hat. I’ve bought a few since then but didn’t wear them often; until a I bought my Stetson crushable.
It’s mainly a cooler weather hat and very casual. Now I need someone for spring and fall.

And one more hat from one of his movies that reminds me of this peacemaker. My favorite Christmas movie The Three Godfathers. Again the creased on the crown is more of a fedora pinch front, but it looks a lot like the peacemaker color and shape.

I don't recall the Duke ever wearing that style of hat. He preferred taller crowns anyway. Incidentally, the costume designer, Luster Bayless, put together Wayne's wardrobe, including the hats, in most of his movies from the early 60s onwards. Luster said that he used to present Wayne with around 20 hats before each movie & he would pick one out & say " Yeah, that should do." 🤠

Just ordered my peace maker thanks to your video! Plus, planning a business trip to Witchita Falls TX and again, thanks to you, I’ll be stopping in to the John Wayne experience in Fort Worth. Wish I could stop by your place for a bourbon and sharing stories of John Wayne who also was loved by John Wayne! Here’s my bit of fandom. Back in ‘68 when I was 8 years old, my grandmother in LA was still working as a script supervisor on set for a lot of movies. She was particularly close friends with Howard Hawkes. Thanks to that friendship she was able to visit with John Wayne on the studio lot and he signed a postcard picture of him to me. That’s as close as I got to my western movie hero. Thanks again for your great videos, and sharing so much great trivia on all things so many of us western movie fans love.

The hat is you. Another fun fact you probably already know, although not related to John Wayne Westerns but his movie “The Green Beret”, he had special forces (green berets) as technical advisors for the movie. Mr. Wayne was so Pro American, Pro Military, Pro Green Beret, the special forces community gave Mr. Wayne a brass Montagnard (a group of indigenous people from the Central Highlands of Vietnam) bracelet. The Montagnards would give these bracelets to a number of green berets in Vietnam to indicate they are now brothers and fellow warriors for ever. Mr. Wayne accepted the bracelet with great pride and humility and said he would never remove it. After the green beret movie you can see him wearing the bracelet in his movies. I discovered this while I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. The small little Special Forces Museum, this was in the mid to late 70’s, had a dedication to Mr. Wayne with the brief history I mentioned above. Thought you may find this interesting. 👍🇺🇸🪖

I recently found your videos and have been enjoying them greatly. One question I have regarding then 4x designation, does that really mean wool or is it fur felt without beaver (rabbit)? I normally see wool liste as a separate material then fur felt, and some fur felts are listed as 4x.

    • @historynerdsmancave7567
      @historynerdsmancave7567  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Each company has its own systems of assigning X quality, and it has changed over time for each. Older Stetsons that were 4X back in the day had some fur felt, but the company has said that today the 4X are all wool. It's a system with no regulation, so, basically, it's a guessing game.

Which John Wayne movie hat does the Peacemaker hat look like to me? It does look a lot like the Duke’s hat from Liberty Valance. Tho that film hat had a sort of Montana Peak crease. The hat John Wayne in The Three Godfathers, looks a bit like this Peacemaker though the crease is still different. Last vote for a similar look, minus the crease or band, is the hat John Wayne wore in The Shootist. That’s my choices. Lastly, you look great in that hat. Must feel great wearing it! I’ve gone through a lot of Cowboy hats in my time from Open Road and Cattleman styles to a Gus or two and a Rio Bravo “Chance” hat - hole and all. So I might have a little experience in my old brain to say, that Peacemaker is a gorgeous hat and I swear, you look dog gone good in it.

If it's wool it would likely be marked as wool. Otherwise it should be fur felt which is likely rabbit but I'm not up on modern stetsons and it wouldn't surprise me if they used wool in their fur blends. The upclose photos you showed don't appear to be wool texture in the felt.

Dixie's Western Wear in Sisters, Oregon was the only place that had the ginormous 7-3/4 size that I wear.

As I said in the video,it was hard as heck to find, especially in the 7 3/4 size I wear. Just keep searching the Internet, and I’ve discovered that if you use a search engine other than Google (Yahoo,Bing, etc.), you can sometimes get lucky with different results.

You have no idea how much I enjoyed Watching this video! Not just because of the hat, which is a must have for me. Having the same initials as the Duke, I love that dark purple silk interior with JW on it. Also I loved the fan and movie history you layered this video with. I even was happy to Superman in the cabinet just behind you along with his fellow DC heroes. What a great video, and from one nerd on these subjects to another, wish we could share a beer and talk about a lot more. My admiration with Duke, and Republic Pictures or Pappy Ford, also was handed down from my dad AND his mom. She made it possible for me as a 6 year old kid in 1966, when my grandma was working as a production assistant on El Dorado,( Howard Hawkes always hired her apparently) she introduced me to John Wayne in Old Tuscon and I shook his hand. Yessir, I think we would have plenty to talk about. Sorry to go on, Thanks again for making my day by making this video!

Thanks for the comment and the kind words, Bubba. I think all of us who are of a certain age share common experiences like this, but, sadly, they are largely lost on today's youth. I'm betting John Wayne will be largely forgotten not too many years from now. It's up to oldtimers like us to keep passing down his memory.

I bet he’ll become a cult classic again. Just about the time when people without tattoos are the cool ones kids! But I for one am glad I got to grow up with him (on my TV and in Movie theaters!) always been a huge part of growing up. Like George Reeves was, in black and white on my little portable with UHF.

I was at the John Wayne Museum last week. I found a Peacemaker hat in black on display. It looked great and I decided to buy it and have it shipped home. I was assured it
would be boxed and shipped the next day. It arrived today. It was not in the original box. I found the hat to be crocked. The crease and brim curve were off 10 degrees left of
center. I guess I'll go to the boot corral tomorrow and try to get it corrected. Stetson's quality control must be a little off this year.
