    I got my first cowboy hat today and just wearing it makes you feel like a different person. I grew up in a small town in North Carolina and not many people wear them around there. I ended up joint the military and got shipped across the country way out west. That’s where I realized how different I was from others because my manner and how I was raised. This was about the time I started embracing my southern heritage and I wanted to stand out from everyone else. At first I thought that people would look at me weird because I’m black but over time I got very comfortable in my own skin and I don’t care how people view anymore. Nowadays people compliment me and I seem to get a lot more respect because of my attitude and me embracing my own heritage no matter what. I appreciate your video and the information you shared, thank you.

    Just purchased my 1st cowboy hat a few weeks ago. I've never been treated better or talked to more by complete strangers. People love cowboys. You get the occasional stupid comment, but you will be surprised how much love and kindness that you receive. You are completely correct about the state of our country and the positive power of the most American head cover.

    There are a lot of things to do with a cowboy hat in daily life.
    But the main etiquette of any cowboy hat:
    (When you should remove your hat)
    1) At Dinner with your family (unless your family says it's okay to wear your hat). Even then it's just plain courteous not to wear your hat in the presence of your family.
    2) During the Pledge of Allegiance (remove your hat and place it at your side or over your heart) It's an insult (both to the Flag, our Nation and its armed forces) to wear your hat during the Pledge. Same reason it's an insult to take a knee during the Pledge.
    3) In a formal setting when there are ladies present (remove your hat). It's insensitive to the ladies to wear a cowboy hat.
    4) When in close proximity to or greeting a lady for the first time, you should gently tip your hat to her. (It's a gesture of respect to the opposite gender and believe me, she'll appreciate the gesture).
    5) At a funeral or funeral home (remove your hat). It's a gesture of respect to the family and to those who've passed if your remove your hat.
    6) At a formal function (wedding etc.) It's just plain good manners and respect to remove your hat during a formal function, unless of course such an occasion requires it.
    7) At a theatre (unless you're sitting in the very back row) Remove your hat. It's not only a distraction, it's just plain rude to wear your hat in a theatre forum.
    8) During church, remove your hat (it's a insult to the Lord, and just plain a distraction to the guests and to the pastor to wear your hat). The major exception being unless it's a cowboy church, then wearing the hat is perfectly okay, but always remove your hat during the Lord's Prayer and Communion.
    9) When you must take your cowboy hat off, there's two places it should be. Either hung up on a hat rack or upside down on the crown (never on the brim.)
    10) Never touch another man's cowboy hat. It's an unwritten code that you may very well risk your life touching another person's cowboy hat.

    As a fellow horseman, I agree with your assessment on hats. A big one around my home is no hats at the dinner table. It’s the way that it’s always been. The first thing you say is grace before a meal and you give reverence to the Lord by taking your hat off and bowing your head.

    I struggle with social anxiety at times and buying my first hat (I have a felt and straw now) and I was really hesitant about wearing it out even though I live in an area of California where people wear cowboy hats a fair amount and my lord the amount of confidence that comes from someone saying “nice hat” or simply someone else in a cowboy hat nods to you is amazing.

    That's a lot of good information for those of us who love hats, but don't really have the opportunity to wear them as often as we'd like, and who haven't had a mentor to share these points with us. I'd like to add one more reason to wear a hat, and that is to protect yourself against skin cancer. Men stopped wearing their fedora and homberg hats sometime in the 1960s. Since then, skin cancer rates have shot up. When I was in my late 30s, I had a patch of skin cancer dug out of my forehead. My dermatologist said to me, "You know all those old men who wear hats? Well, you're one of 'em now." I took his advice, and my hat collection sometimes makes me blush. Yeah, they can be a style statement, but you're absolutely right - - they are functional. Thanks for a great video to start off my day with! Blessings to you, Sir!

    Im from Sweden and I would really like to own a genuine cowboy hat. But I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on one just to find out that it doesn’t fit my head or suit me as a person. I think the best thing to do is to wait for the right time. I really want to travel to the US and see for myself how it is or at least how I think it is as a tourist. You never see people in my country wearing these hats but I want to ignore that and be myself. I’m tired of having to hide my opinions and my belief from everyone. Even my friends and family because I’m scared that they will be disappointed or that they won’t see me in the same way. But you can’t hide your true self forever. You usually find a size chart on hat websites such as Resistol or Stetson, but some of these hats are specifically designed for differant shaped heads but they make crushable hats that conform to your head shape these are usually not as durable as a beaver felt hat but an easy way to start

      @@aggressor6609 Do your research because cowboy hats are not all the same. Felt hats aren’t the same either. All depends on what you want out of a hat. Are you going to wear it in bad weather? Are you going to wear it every day or once a year? That kind of thing. You can spend very little for a wool hat or a pile of cash for a beaver hat. Most wool and lower end fur felts only come pre shaped whereas lots of higher end hats come with an open crown and flat brim and you have to tell the shop what kind of shape you want and they will shape it right there. (If you buy from a good hat shop) My young son has a $75 wool hat, my Resistol 6x was about $240 and pre-shaped but my Rodeo King 100x was $900, open crown and was shaped to my liking. Just saying for comparison. But if you find a hat you like but maybe the shape isn’t right for you it can always be steamed and re-shaped. The higher quality the fur felt the easier it is to shape. Wool is hard to shape, beaver is easy. Never force the hat into shape, always steam it. Also important is the way the hat is blocked from the factory. Generally Stetsons are more round, Resistol are more oval but also can be long oval. My Rodeo King is long oval.
      The big main brands to look for are Stetson, Resistol, Rodeo King, American Hat, plus custom makers. Those are some of the bigger companies. I’m sure others can chime in on this.
      As for straws, they are a little more simple. People will say straw cowboy hats are plastic. No they are not. They are just sprayed with lacquer to make them weather resistant. American Hat uses a different lacquer than the others so they are more flexible. Easier to get back into shape if you mess them up.
      I’m going on way too long. My advise is to not order a cowboy hat from the internet. Go to a good hat shop where people have been around a while and know what they are talking about and know what they are doing. You will much more satisfied with your hat.

    I've been wearing cowboy hats for years. I enjoyed the video! 1. If I mucked out stalled or some other dirty chores, I take that hat off at the dinner table. If it's a nice clean dress hat I wear it. Trying to find a place on the table for it where there is no chance for it becoming soiled with food and drink is just about impossible. Chefs wear hats when cooking because its more sanitary. People working in fast food resaurants wear hats for the same reason. The flag, funerals, wedding etc. of course I remove my hat out of respect. 2. Two of my felt hats have belt/buckle style hat bands. I like to put a couple of playing cards in the hatband, but the way it is attached to the hat I cannnot fit the cards on the left side. So I wear them on the right. I am thinking about putting a cowboy toothpick on the right side so I am at least partially correct. Your thoughts?

      In the military you only get a Stetson from being in a Calvary Unit (at least that's my understanding). Unless you got it by being a member of that unit I would not impersonate that unit. I am an Army vet myself and you don't even earn the Stetson Military Hat, you get one when you are assigned to the unit and only authorized to wear it if your Battalion or Company commander approves (Again just my understanding, faded memories from over 20 years ago now, who knows maybe now things have changed). It's not listed as acceptable issued headgear in the AR670-1, what is earned however are your Knots those are combat knots and Spurs, and unless you have served in a theater of war WITH THAT UNIT you should not have Knots or Gold Spurs. Given you did not know this, I would suggest you don't do what is on your mind unless you want to get asked to confirm things you will never know about unless you were in a Cav Unit and earned what is on your head being displayed, and then you will get made to feel like a poser of that Unit for sure. It is highly disrespectful to Veteran's for someone to wear what you have earned when they themselves have not earned it. It's kind of the same thing as me being Field Artillery and wanting to wear a beret cause they are cool.... I didn't earn a beret so I would never disrespect our Special Forces by wearing one, not even the Black Berets that the regular enlisted started wearing a while back, as you see they stopped wearing the black berets because the SF Ranger Units were being disrespected by allowing anyone who enlists to wear what they gave blood sweat and tears to earn. The Black Beret is Iconic to the Rangers as Green Berets are for Green Berets Unit and the Red for Airborne. - Lets ask the question in another way - Would you be ok with someone that was enlisted in the service to wear a combat badge when they have never seen war, or been deployed into a conflict? How about if an enlisted person wore rank that they did not earn, would that offend you? I bet the answer is yes, even though you may not voice that opinion or even confront the person, I am sure as a vet that earned what you got awarded it would be seen as disrespectful to you and your service. Hope this helps to guide that decision. - I say all of the above only as my opinion's and trying to help guide you from making what would be a mistake in my eyes. Hopefully you don't take this as being disrespectful or talking sideways outta my mouth to you, fellow Vet. - A Btry 6/32 FA MLRS - Proud Americans - We Bring The Rain!!! HOOAH!!!

    Just purchase my first cowboy straw hat last week. Can I sit down on my bed with my hat on while tying my shoe? What do you recommend I put my hat while at home? I always sit it in my closet with the crown facing down. Can’t wait to purchase a felt/wool hat. (I’m in Texas)

    • @integrativepreparedness9427
      @integrativepreparedness9427  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congratulations, Brian! Yes, you can sit on a bed with your hat on - just don't put your hat directly on a bed. As far as where to put your hat while at home, anywhere it won't get smashed and on the crown is fine, just like you're doing, or you could get a hat rack or put a hat hook on the wall. As to fur or wool, the one I'm wearing in this video is wool, but if you expect to wear it much in the rain or snow I would go with beaver felt as it is more durable. All the best!

    I use to wear a hat back when I was stationed in New Mexico and decided to buy one over Christmas along with a new pair of boots. I know it sounds silly but there is something about a hat and boots that make a man feel different.
    I currently live in my home state of Kentucky and you don't see a cowboy hat too often(even on our horse farms, the baseball cap seems to be the norm).
    Is there a rule about driving with a hat or I should say, what is the standard place to put it. Maybe it's my truck but the hat and headrest interference makes it quite uncomfortable.
    Thanks for the video, it never hurts to know the gentlemanly way to conduct ourselves

    • @integrativepreparedness9427
      @integrativepreparedness9427  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! Yes, the higher headrests in trucks today make it tough to wear a hat while you're driving unless you recline the seat quite a bit, which is what I do. And welcome back to the world of hats and boots! Yes, they do make you feel different. Maybe you can introduce your fellow Kentuckians to the usefulness of a real hat - keeping the sun and rain out of your eyes AND off your neck!

    In 1970, while in high school, in started workin on a dairy farm in Chino, Ca. I had never worn a cowboy hat until then but that was a piece of clothing that I was expected to wear. After a stint in the Marine Corps where I had to wear a cover every time I was outdoors or under arms I went “Hatless”. After about 10 years of not wearing a hat, my Dr. found some pre-cancerous lesions on the top of my head. She asked me if I worked outside and if I did would my employer let me wear a wide brimmed hat. I told her they probably wouldn’t let me wear one so she gave me a note that allowed me to wear a hat. I went back to wearing a cowboy hat and have been wearing one ever since. I enjoy wearing a cowboy hat in So. Cal. and the little kids just get a kick when they see a “ cowboy”. I tell them I did work with cows and horses but I drive a truck. They get a kick out of that. ( God bless Chris LeDoux)

    Way back when...the best quality hat one could get was a 7X beaver, and I had one that lasted for years. Over the last 40+ years, with hardhats, uniform hats, berets, welder's helmets, etc. I kinda lost track of the good 'ol cowboy hat. Finally, now retired and with my personal choice ability returned, I started shopping for a GOOD cowboy hat. I was amazed to see ratings as high as 500x. Sounds like model number expansion, not improvement.
    Anyway, I DO agree that the shovel-front looks more like a stall cleaning tool than a cowboy hat. After I get a new hat, with as much crown and brim as is available, I reshape it to my own wants, ending up with close to a "Gus" with a nice, easy roll around the front and back, with the sides up, not unlike yours in this video, but no quite as steep.
    Keep up the good work!

    Neither am I American, nor do I live in America. I am a German, living in Zambia. But those values you mention in the video are 50% of the reason why I , not long ago, chose to also wear a straw cowboy hat & Boots here (since it's always hot, felt hats are not really necessary here except for maybe 4 weeks in the year^^). Those values are, I feel, even more needed than when you made this video. And I find it easier to explain them to my kids with that certain aura you get from wearing the hats & Boots. 25% are for me bc of the functionality while working in the yard, checking the animals and doing the farming. Yes I could also get the safari kind of hats that are popular here, but next to representing the named values the last 25% are also simply because I like the way it looks. So thank you for the information from this video. I found it very useful.

      SELF RELIANCE is another very important character trait. People used to be ashamed to admit they'd taken unemployment benefits or any form of welfare, but the socialists have urged us all to take pride in it. That's upside-down logic. If you're not hunting, find the opportunity. Don't kill anything you wouldn't eat, but learn how to field dress it, butcher it, and cook it. That's a form of self-reliance that will give your wife and kids confidence in you as a provider, even if you work in an office and live in town. You can put food on the table when the store shelves are bare.

    Well I just got my first hat for my 18th birthday present, considering the fact that I’m from Southern California it doesn’t look like I’ll be wearing my hat in too many places since it relys on the general consensus lol

    I’m that New York yankee big city type. But I’ve been interested in getting a cowboy hat. And I wanted to know the etiquette. Thanks for the info.

    I noticed i don't look too right with a western hat on and i think it has to do with proportionality. I know the size, but I may have to try and get one custom made so it doesn't stand so tall. Utility is great but i also am not trying to look like Yosemite Sam

    • @integrativepreparedness9427

      LOL. There are different brim sizes and different crown sizes. Also, different shaping can have a drastic effect on how it looks. Go to a good custom hat store and let them guide you in this.

      The one in this video is an inexpensive wool hat from Cavenders. Not high quality, but I like it.

    I have a question, if you’re someone who just likes the cowboy at for the style and function. But yet does some work as a farm hand. Would that be acceptable for having a reason to have it and not look like an idiot? Even to some of the professional cowboys

    • @integrativepreparedness9427
      @integrativepreparedness9427  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure thing, Aaron. Most people who wear cowboy hats aren't real cowboys, just like most who wear ball caps aren't baseball players. Hats are a style, but also for function, keeping the sun, rain and sleet off your face and neck. Wear what you want to, when you want to and where you want to!👍🏻

      @@integrativepreparedness9427 Thank you very much. I know it sounds like a monotonous question. But with how folks are around my area. Some may pop the question do you have a reason to wear that? Thanks again!

      Yes! If hat and boot manufacturers only catered to working cowboys, they would be out of business within a year. I’m 62, native Texan, retired IT executive, and have been wearing hats, boots and jeans all my life. Be confident. Wear what you like and don’t worry about what others think.

    Thank you Mr Smith, NH Yankee born (don't hold it against me 🤣) moved to the Mid West (Chicago🤮) 20 years ago, I had never worn one, but this summer while on vacation I picked up a straw and wearing it made me feel different. since then I have picked up a felt and am eyeballing another for more formal occasions. I appreciate your adding to my knowledge on how to wear them and not show any unintentional disrespect, I did learn that i may have been doing so. 😳 so you saved me on that Thanks! I've been watching a lot more videos on this subject (how to wear the hat) and I agree with the message conveyed in this video, thanks again for leading by example our country needs more of that.

    Yes this is why I always loved hat you summed it up nicely. It was awesome listening to this it was like I was sitting there with you listening to a friend. 👍🏼👍🏼. Everything you said that a hat represents is why I think I always loved and respected cowboy hats and I think that’s why I always wanted to wear them to show people could count on me or trust me look up to me i guess but I’m a humble way 😅
