I agree, Honda needed to do something to compete for an affordable hybrid commuter car. Honda builds a decent product. However, Toyota countered Honda by building the Prius "C", which is even less expensive than the Honda, but still delivers better fuel mileage and reliability. Toyota is truly the leader in hybrid technology. I must also add that not all owners of Prii buy the cars to be eco-friendly, instead it adds up to fuel cost and reliability. The Prius is a truly advanced commuter car for the masses. It makes a wonderful family car too!

One of the things they don't mention in this video is that the Honda Insight "tutors" you on how to drive efficiently. A great deal of gasoline savings is based on how you drive your car as well as how efficient the engine/aero is. There are tons of people who drive hybrids thinking they're getting great milage but really could be getting much more out of it by driving differently.

Listening for the electric whine and tire noise of the Prius is particularly tough on busier roads, but it is possible to hear them if you're in a suburban area or a school zone-if you're familiar with their sound. They're also dead silent if the operator just lets off the accelerator to slow down (say for turning into a shopping center driveway) instead of hitting the brakes.

Im all about saving money in cars. In the used car market the Insight is very affordable I never driven a Prius and it is attractive but it seems a bit older I.e. for an older crowd whereas the Insight is more youthful and fun.

I had a 2011 Insight ES ,got it because the Saab 93 I had was getting 23 MPG on the daily commute. The Insight put this up to 43 MPG.I have now got a Gen 4 2016 Prius & 65 MPG,the Prius is a much better car ,more like the Saab in size & comfort but is very expensive compared to the Honda . The Hybrid technology works & I have no problem recommending it to anyone.
BTW the mileage figures are Imperial not US gallons

Comparing these two cars is like comparing an ES 350 to an Accord or a TL to a Camry. While they technically achieve the same goals, one has a lot more to offer in the way of features, smoothness and refinement then the other. The Prius has a lot more to offer. I read that Toyota is going to keep making the 2 generation Prius at the same starting price as the Insight.

Between 3rd august 2011 and 5th august 2012, my 1995 Citroen ZX 1900cc diesel estate drove 9217 miles, used £1098.28 of fuel and has averaged 54.14 miles per gallon.
It cost me £260 off ebay and i bought it unseen.
It hasn't let me down once, it has astounded people at how much crap i can get in the back in one go.
It is quiet, doesn't burn oil and apart from the odd dent here and there, looks good.
I'm the third owner and love it to bits!
Why fork out thousands for a new car?

It's the production of the batteries that bring the prius down. The nickel is actually mined and smelted in Sudbury, Ontario (Canada) by Inco. The nickel is then shipped to a refinery in Europe. From there, the nickel goes to China to produce nickel foam. Then, it goes to Japan. In Japan Panasonic manufactures the battery itself, then it's off to the Toyota plant for final vehicle assembly. Lastly the cars are shipped to the United States, completing the world tour required for a Prius battery.

@@roywalker7512 exactly. The battery only has to be produced one time and then functions for 10-15 years, whereas that 40 or 50 litres of gas in the tank has to be produced every few weeks for the entirety of the car’s lifetime.

The thing is that because the Prius gets even the slightest amount more in miles per gallon, various governments have provided incentives to buy one over the Honda Insight. In the northeastern US, there is an electronic toll system known as EZ-Pass for which Prius owners are eligible for a 10% discount. In the U.K., trims of both vehicles are exempt from U.K. Road Tax, although this applies to more Prius models.

I have been looking at possibly buying a hybrid. One thing that worries me is the Priusdoes not have a connection as such to the output to the wheels. IF a fuse or breaker pops and the electric drive system stops so does the car. The Honda has a "standard" drive unit that assisted by the motor. If the motor stops you can limp on in to a dealer not sit on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. BUT I also dont understand Hondas claim that the valves stay CLOSED to let the engine freewheel?

Welp, 15 years later… the Prius has proven itself to be one of the most reliable cars on the road. And the transmission is bullet-proof and is never a point of failure in the car. And even without a functioning battery, the Prius can still drive, albeit with a reduced fuel economy of course.

Sadly now after 5 years, the Insight owners have sued Honda over false MPG claims (over-estimated)..and Honda is dis-continuing Insight production. For most drivers, the Prius delivers well over it's stated mpg...and 58mpg on highway while driving at the speed limit. That's under 40mpg vs upwards of 60mpg....50% more. The fourth gen Prius is due out now - with lighter curb weight and further increased mpg. The Insight is a failed design...too bad, it looked great!

@omendark123 I like Nissan Leaf, but the price difference just makes a Honda Fit more economical.
A 2011 Honda Fit is $18K. A 2011 Leaf costs $38K. A difference of $20K. That would mean I would have to drive the Leaf for 19 years (if I only use free charging stations) for it to be worth it.
No, buying a Leaf will make sense not only when it has better range (which it definitely needs), but when it is more affordable. It would also be nice if charging stations were more common...

@rrr536 Why not indeed? The only downside to diesel seems to be that some of the NOx emissions are harmful. A friend of mine did some research on diesel and biodiesels, and is very skeptical of hybrids (and moreso electric cars, since power is produced at about 40% efficiency in fossil power stations, then distributed over the grid losing more efficiency and transferred into your battery at a further loss, before we even look at battery fade etc).
    Diesels do seem pretty good!

I'm hoping Insight owners out here don't do what so many Prius owners do and try to get a custom plate proclaiming that they're a hybrid. I mean owners of hybrid Civics and hybrid Camrys don't get those plates as they're not symbols of "hybrid ecological superiority" despite being perfectly viable options (as opposed to hybrid S.U.V.s-which are silly since it doesn't help as they're still poor fuel mileage performers).

  • @toyotaprius79

@omendark123 No, the figure is right. I drive about 13,000 miles per year and my car gets about 25MPG, so that means I spend about $1,800 per year.
As for the T27, it's a neat car that is more affordable than the Leaf, but man, a top speed of 65MPH? That's unbearable and actually pretty dangerous on some highways (where the average speed is >80MPH). As of right now, I think Nissan is in the best position to advance the electric car. Toyota and Honda might catch up later, though.

Unlike Prius, Insight is more user friendly; it doesn’t have variety of throttle programmes. Just, a single feature carries out all the jobs together via the ECON mode. The indicator of ECON mode shows two types of lights - green & blue by symbolizing the fuel efficiency of the car. This is easier to comprehend and hence more favourable than Prius.

In all actuality, I spend about $1,800 per year on gas and I drive extremely little.

The Prius is built to a much more higher quality and it shows and i think when you are talking Hybrids which are very compercated cars that is very important. Also I trust Toyota far more with this than i do Honda. There is also the traditon that Honda cars are short lived and Toyota's live forever.

they are trying. the thing is honda and toyota have so much more knowledge and experience with hybrid technology it is going to take gm at LEAST 2 more years to get to this point.

Much less than they use to, the smell is greatly reduced with ULSD and really doesn't smell any more than gasoline does. I do own a diesel, a Jetta TDI.

@LOVETOYOTAS yep, I believe both are praised for their quality .. toyota is more comfortable, while honda is more driver car.. a bit hard but more sporty ride, of course depends on the model but that's the tendency.. toyota seems easier to maintain and parts also substitue parts are easily available due to higher population.. while honda tends to be more expensive in maintenance but age wise they're pretty good.. Asian like honda possible because of the style suits asian taste better

You're welcome. I enjoyed talking to a Honda-Douche, although I felt that I would have a more intelligent, intuitive conversation with a rock.

    EPA, fueleconomy(dot)gov
New MPG (tests are more realistic)
    City/Hwy/Combined
    Prius 2010 - 51/48/50
    Prius 2004 - 48/45/46
    Insight 2010 - 40/43/41
    Jetta Tdi 2009 - 29/40/33
The EPA ratings are a useful tool for comparing the fuel economies of different vehicles but may not accurately predict the average MPG you will get.
When you own one of these cars, you no longer care how much gas is.

@RnB123100 In what way is it more eco-friendly? According to stats collected on Wikipedia from 5 different sites, the Hummer gives from 8.2 to 12mpg which is awful (I mean, look at the thing - 6.2L v8, it's like putting jet rockets on the back of a big cube of steel, heavy and bad aerodynamics).
10mpg for the Hummer versus 50mpg for the Prius... hmmm :D
Unless you mean that production of the Prius (and disposal of the battery) is more costly/wasteful than the Hummer, then I dunno.

@siraff2 That's combined US estimate mpg shit, I test driven a prius and god I don't want to drive one again but that got 65 mpg on average.

@siraff2 loads of diesels? really? can you enlighten me? i'm only aware of volkswagen's but am weary because of the Golf TDI's higher price and VW's reputation for unreliability and higher repair costs.
I won't argue that a Golf TDI will be lots more fun and a more luxurious car, the cost is prohibitive and the reliability question mark is not something i want to worry about after a few years of ownership
