I don't think they emphasized enough how bad the factory hybrid batteries are. Honda was replacing them under warranty within 2 to 3 years when this car first came out. Do not expect 8 to 10 years or more like a gen 2 or 3 Prius gets on it's battery.
The manual transmissions also eventually break. Third gear usually goes out due to a worn synchro.
Otherwise, awesome video! I love the Insight content. Keep it coming!

Insight are just the odd car that seems to hook some people, including myself. I got mine thinking just to save gas and not do anything with it. Fast forward and I started doing all kind of things to it like figuring out what gears you can swap and such. Just a blast to drive around town, definitely the mantra of driving a slow car fast kind of fun.

Had mine 6 years paid £3000 for it. They are now being advertised on ebay for £8000, IMA finally given up. No road tax and insurance £150 a year! Everyone asks me about it, even got a crowd looking at it in the car park at a country fair last summer. Toying with a new battery as my commute is 60 miles a day. The ULEZ in London is being expanded and my office is in the expansion soon zone so no brainer. Even without the IMA battery I got 67.4 mpg today.

I think it's cool to see a car channel making hybrid / hypermiling content. Modifying cars isn't always about going faster. Sometimes it's about better fuel economy. The guys trying to squeeze another mpg out of their hypermiler are just as passionate as the ones trying to shave another tenth off their 1/4 mile times.

When mine was stock, I was able to get 78 but that was at 65 mph straight flat highway probably with a tail wind. After the battery died, it was cheaper to k swap it. Now it is absolutely a much better car than I ever expected.
Sporty, fun , reliable, fast, good cargo capacity for trips, and surprisingly fuel efficient.

Honda insider here... for every Insight, S2000 and NSX produced from the original Tochigi factory... Honda actually lost $$ for every unit tht rolled off the line.. there was so much R&D, precision components and materials that went into these cars... also back then the NSX and S2000 didn't travel down a traditional assembly line... each body traveled in carts, stopped at each assembly station for 1 worker... then that worker would push the cart to the next worker...

Also I agree: I have had mine (it's a 2000) since 2006 and replacing the big battery has been the only major repair ( and it's expected). Is it the aerodynamics or something else about the car you want? Or why not take a gasoline car and change it to electric? These are already so awesome / efficient and there aren't many left. Miss my insight so bad... was slow as shit but loved it for getting insane mileage and for a solo long distance commuter it was absolutely perfect! Some things that should have been mentioned are the rear hatch gear for release is always going to be broken ($8.00 3D printed option worked flawless tho), front lower control arm bushing are trash and potentially completely separate (I made a DIY for polyurethane replacements on those) if not corrected the alignment is all over the place and down right dangerous. Rear suspension absolutely needs to be upgraded for ride comfort, handling and weight carrying (HybridRevolt offers 30% stiffer springs + compression adjustable dampers, about $380.00). OE Bridgestone RE 92's are sometimes impossible to get, expensive for their size and your mileage will drop if you run anything else. $500-600 worth of extra battery maintenance charger and stick to a monthly 2 day drain and charge schedule if you want to keep the 20+ year old pack still operating... Oh and be ready to deal with a constant P0420 code (secondary oxygen sensor with a non-fouler fixes it for about 4-6mo).
Once in "mexico" I got it to register 101mph on the cluster which I thought was quite impressive, but also terrifying!😂
Honestly tho, if you do a 75+ mile daily commute this car will pay for it self in no time.
Thank you G&G for the great content and covering the Insight, brings me back.

Bought it for $400, put 35k trouble free miles on it over the span of a year and a half, then sold it due to financial reasons for $3k about a year ago, and still regret selling it to this day. I drive a Prius Prime now, and while the MPG is the same, if not occasionally better then the insight, nothing can match that little eggs soul and character.

Gotta say, while it is heavier with only a little more power, my 1991 Civic with it's DPFI 1.5 could get ridiculously good fuel economy. At one point I was hovering around 60 mpg at 70 mph with around 40ish in stop and go traffic.
    It's currently getting infinite/0 mpg's sitting around...😶😔

I’ll always love the Honda crx & Insight. Just can’t reason to pay the mark up on one with the neglected they are in… so I purchased a Hyundai Ioniq although it’ll never have any performance parts it reminds me of the Insight. Mishimoto created a concept for the ioniq with rear wheel covers and damn looks good.
