We compare the specs and design features on the two latest and most interesting hybrid vehicles - the Honda Insight and the all-new Toyota Prius. Part 1 of 2.
i was in a situation where i had to choose between those two cars i chose insight the reason for that it has smaller engine, lesser tax and to be honest insight looks far more futuristic and more attractive.
If you're looking for a fuel efficient car to save money, I'll tell you the best new car sleeper deal on the market, the 2010 Hyundai Accent "Blue" model. Get the manual transmission with no a/c (if you can live without a/c, up here in Chicago that's pretty easy). I got mine for $9,100, $11,000 after taxes and fees. I'm getting 40 mpg in city driving, no highway miles. I imagine once I do get on the highway I'll be getting 45 mpg+.
I like the insight better looking more fun to drive I had a prius and felt like a retired grampa lol I'm 29 years old, passing the 150k miles mark the prius become a money pit with its more electric oriented design (try to find someone to work on a electric problem in a prius in Texas) the insight is more on the mechanical side so you get the best of both worlds
I don't hate people for the things they do. Just making fun of the people who make fun of what other people may like. And when I say people I don't mean every last one. Don't jump on me like you know me, because you don't. My wife owns the 07 Prius, I own a 2006 RL. Back in the day I loved hooking my TL's up, but it's gettin old to me. There are much better ways of spending thousands of dollars. A plastic kit that costs over 1K-3K installed could get you a very nice vacation in the world!
I know you don't realize this, but the 2004-2009 Prius, has twin reversible electric motors, with a max of 10,000rpm, that make 67hp & 295 lbs torque, that is powered by a 500 volt electric battery. It's not as slow as people think. The 04-09Prius basically has the power of a 2.5 Liter I-4, but gets twice the mileage. These cars weren't built for performance, they were built to be the most efficient, which they are. Your Monte Carlo was built for performance, which it isn't the best at.
I totally agree, here's another way of looking at it. A Yaris or some other small car costs 12 to 15 thousand. A hybrid costs 20 to thirty thousand. How much gas could you by for that extra, say, ten thousand dollars.
Diesel Electrics don't use a third rail. The diesel engine powers a generator that provides electric power to the motors that turn the wheels. This technology was first used in 1957. Most trains in North America are powered this way. They also use regenerative braking.
The Prius offers some high-end features usually found only on vehicles sold by Toyota's Lexus division, including adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist with lane-departure warning, and Intelligent Parking Assist that provides hands-free parallel parking. Other new options include a solar roof panel that can power a ventilating fan when the car is parked, and electric air conditioning that can be turned on for up to three minutes to cool down the interior before getting in.
Voice-activated touch-screen DVD navigation+NavTraffic with a 500 watt JBL DSP MP3 sound system with 8 speakers, satellite radio, hands-free phone & music streaming via Bluethooth, backup camera Smart Keyless entry with push botton start & remote start, Pre-Collision System, Advanced Driver and front passenger airbags + Knee airbags, Front seat mounted airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. Those are just a few of the features that the Prius offers.
Prius would be a better buy plus the insight feels very cheap and congested compared to the Prius , I’ve driven both and I prefer the Prius , well at the end of the day it’s up to you drive both and you be the judge
Its a good thing that cars are considerably smaller than trains or buses. It should make it a lot easier to move the car. There is no downside to that although I am interested to know what you come up with to support your argument.
Some people say the Toyota Prius is bad because of the recall that happened with the gas petal and the media making a hugh deal about it because they had nothing else to talk about back then. Before that no one had anything to say and most of the people that put the car down never even driven or owned one before. Most new and used cars has had recalls, big and small put out there about something. It's just the media doesn't have time to talk about each car. If they did no one would buy anything.
They are the same features that are found on luxury cars that cost anywhere from $45,000 Volvos to $130,000 Mercedes. It's is to prevent people from falling asleep at the wheel and driving off the highway or road and hurting or worse killing themselves. This happens a lot to people who have long commutes or a very long tip ahead of them.
For most normal drivers including myself, torque is more important than horsepower especially for hill climbing. For the version of Honda Insight in my country (which is from Japan itself), the combined torque is 199Nm which is quite amazing from such a small engine. The low end torque is very good. It's higher than many 1.6Litres or even 1.8/2.0Litres, 174Nm/188Nm (Civic). It takes around 10.4 seconds to reach 100km/hr as shown in part 2 of the video, beats Prius.
Did you know that trains are electric/diesel hybrids and have been so for a very long time? Did you think the people carry the products made on an assembly line?
Passenger Volume Accord-106ft Camry-101ft Prius-94ft They all seat 5 people but the Prius has way more head room. Luggage Volume Accord-14ft Camry-15ft Prius-22ft Cost of battery, not that you would need to buy one... is $1,500. That is not including the turn in rebate ($200) you would get from Toyota.
Gotta say, Honda is an interesting choice and it's a good value for the money. Doesn't drive badly. I think there's nothing wrong with it. Prius is, on the other hand, is fucking expensive. You can buy an entry level sedan with more fuel efficient diesel engine for that price. You can get car that doesn't compromise everything like Prius does. And it'll be greener as well. Hybrids are about as green as Hummer H2 in a long run.
Yes, the part has been replaced, and I received a complimentary car wax plus a letter of apologies from the dealer. My wife's Malibu was not recalled but the transmission broke last month and she'll have to pay 2500$. I don't mind a safety recall, compared to a transmission that breaks on the highway at full speed after 44K miles. Nothing against GM, but I,m not impressed by some dork in a TV ad trying to convince me by smiling and saying 'trust me buy GM' 23 times in 30 seconds.
@Rezxer The Prius Effect? I did not know that thanks. In the Insight the backlight shows green when you're driving efficiently and blue when you're not, not everyone like it but I do. And after every trip when you turn off the engine it'll show you the Eco score. If you drive efficiently in the long run it'll even award you with trophies LOL in 3 stages. Prius doesn't have that right? Prius and Insight don't look identical, they just have a similar aerodynamic shape and they're both hatchbacks.
They have been known to last 361,000 miles before they started to ware out. That's way longer then I ever plan on keeping any car. The Prius is one of the easiest cars to maintain that I have ever seen. All you have to do is change the oil ($25) every 5,000 miles and at about 90,000 to 100,000 miles change the 4 spark plugs and transmission fluid. That's it! No high priced timing belt server like other cars, no belts to change, since it doesn't have any, you don't even have to change the brakes!
Ooh. Brutal. I agree with some of what you said. I hate to see obviously poor people spending every last penny they make customizing cars that really aren't worth it, then beating the crap out of them, then getting piddles when they try to trade up. It's a trend that poor young guys have gotten sucked into. Thank God I never got into that. I like keeping my cars stock and CLEAN.
The last I recall, my house is teaming with electrical outlets. In fact I strongly suspect that there are more outlets around my house than there are gas stations in a 10 mile radius of my home. Tell what is more convenient than that?
@RJL1981 nope sticker is 42K, but you can haggle down to 40K, government will pay 7.5K, most states pay from 2.5-7.5 K too. Here in Nebraska, the total price for a Nissan Leaf is $22,380 for the base and $24,810 for top of the line. The volt is $23,180 for the base and $25,189 for the top of the line.
jeez people the prius is not the best maybe you should try both cars before you troll on here. Iam supporting the Inisight for 3 main reasons: 1. It has a smoother drive. 2. Its way cheaper, the top of the line EX w/Navi cost me only $19,250. Where as the Prius is around $31,380 with all the same features. 3. Honda's warranty is a 100K/10 year warranty instead of Toyota's 5 year/60K warranty. The downside of the Insights are: -only 42.2 MPG instead of 48 MPG of the Prius.
Your point? What type of engine is used to power the vast majority of industry and why do you think that is? If you have ever been to a factory of virtually any kind, most of the movement is powered by electric motors. If ICE is so marvelous, why isn't it used to power industry?
71mpg is so efficient for how much I drive. The only thing I don't like it the back end of the Prius and how much it costs. I love the main difference between these. The hondas are gas with electric assist, and Toyota is electric with gas assist meaning in town they save you a whack load of money. I can't wait to get mine. I'm gettin a Tesla car after a Prius, but not the roadster. Thanks for readin and hope y'all get a Prius or something with 71mpg or close to it to help save our planet.
in the upper right hand corner it asks if you prefer the older setup or what ever, click on it and it will return to regular broadcast. all vids are doing it now, real pain in the BUTT
Wow, you're one of the few people on here who actually make any intellectual sense. Thanks for that. And you're right! Those who think they are being individualistic rebels are typically part of a subculture of people just like themselves. How many tuned Civics/Accords have you seem today? You want to be different, but buy a Kia like I did, lol. Hey, I see a lot less Optima's like mine stock than all the pimped out cars in town. I'M the individualistic one, not them.
The same kind of brakes every other car has, but the electric motor helps stop the car as well. Which means the brakes don't have to work nearly as hard as others cars. Making them last way longer then other brakes. Because of this, the Prius has a lot of stopping power because of the electric motor, which by the way is very powerful, it makes the brakes and engine last way longer then in a normal car. The electric motor in the 07 Prius has 295 lb-ft of torque powered by a 500 volt battery.
Comparing these two cars is like comparing an ES 350 to an Accord or a TL to a Camry. While they technically achieve the same goals, one has a lot more to offer in the way of features and smoothness and refinement then the other.
I noticed you didn't answer the question. I didn't think you would. It may come as a shock to but not every car on the road is built for performance. I mean the Prius is pretty much a family car that is not geared for young people with a need for speed. If you are going to hate a car because it is not built for speed then you have a lot of hating to do. The Prius goes as fast as most 4 bangers, yet gets twice the mileage. Two weeks worth of gas for you would last the Prius more then a month
I had common rail diesel cars (small engines), now I want to buy a Honda hybrid...in my opinion, the common rail engine is very expensive, I spent a lot of money for devices that were breaking, injectors, injection pump, the coupons are also very expensive. The old diesel cars, that were more simple, were slower cars but more reliable. Too many devices around this modern common rail (the money I have saved with the advantages of diesel, I spent on assistance of car).
33 mpg on the highway... That sucks! My wife gets 55 mpg per tank, in her 2007 Prius. That's not highway or city, it's everywhere. The 2010 Prius is rated at 48 mpg on the highway and can go 600 miles on one tank of gas. But wait, there's more. You spend $40+ to fill that tank, while Prius owners only spend $25. Hell, her car was down to one bar of gas last week, and it wasn't even blinking yet, but I wanted to fill it for her. I had a $20 bill. That filled it up.
Toyota Prius has a bigger carbon footprint then even some V8 Mercedes full size cars! One reason is the manufactoring process. Take the batteries for instance:1Raw material is digged up in Canada 2Exported to Europe to be refined 3Sent to China for final refinement 4Sent to Japan where the battery is made, and installed on a Prius 5Exported to USA. If you are planning to buy Prius for a puropse to give a little back to this fragile earth, this vehicle has a iron curtain.. There are other ways...
The thing is, the civic hybrid has things like low resistance tires for more mpg, and the insight has normal tires to make the feel more 'normal'. Honda should make the insight as economical as possible, and the civic hybrid as user friendly as possible. That should teach Toyota. Honda could have made tons of $ from the first insighht if it was 4 dr.
Honda's strategy is interesting: its new insight looks just like the last gen prius, gets about the same mileage as the last gen prius, except it costs 4-5k less while Toyota's improvement isn't on the price side but on the tech side. The new mpg is great, but seriously, the roof solar panel that can only work when you park and basically turn on the interior fans (recirculates air)...is a little gimmicky.
Fossil fuels have to be refined, trucked, shipped or piped through expensive potentially damaging pipelines. Electricity needs wires and is delivered instantly over vast distances.
The Prius offers a lot more then just gas mileage. Like I have said before, there are more features in this car then what any car it's size even offers. With the Prius it's not just about gas. For the people who own one they know what I am talking about. Talking about the Prius and just talking about it's mpg is like talking about an Acura RL and only talking about it's mpg. There is so much more to the car then just mpg.
@meesterbrian still was $22,995 so yeah $23K, they had only the Navi and the LX in stock. They needed to meet their quota for the end of the month so he sold me the Navi for $19 or the LX for $17, I took the Navi for resale value and it came with blue-tooth too. if you wait till the end of November that would be better so you can get a better price since they all will be trying to get their quota. you can definitely get the EX under $20K FOR SURE. just tell em you liked the Prius!!!!!
Yeah, a buddy of mine had a bright yellow one. I have always loved Hondas too. Thing is, that CRX was tiny man...really tiny. It didn't have 6 airbags and it basically had two seats...not 4 with 4 doors. As good a car as it was...it was a dinosaur compared to either of these. Also, are you sure about that 41/50? I knew it had fantastic fuel mileage, but that seems a bit high...remember too, EPA mileages would rate much higher then.
But why compare them? Even though they both have a similar aerodynamic shape, the Prius is a bigger C segment car, and the Insight is a slightly smaller B segment car.
Haters live a sad life. I will tell you how sad it gets. I saw a kid around 20 years old posting negative comments on just about all the Prius videos. I checked his profile and he had 14 videos in his favorites. 13 of them were Prius vids. The 14th one was some Asian girl named Magibon. Anyway he would go to them just to be negative. It's like his life sucked so in stead of going to things he likes, he went to thing he hated just so he could try and piss people off. It's sad, but true.
@RJL1981 oh no not locally, Iam talking about from Cali or NY. Iam just saying, once it does launch here, then you can get it down here. I didn't know you were purchasing right now, cause then, you'd have to buy later, I thought you were buying down the line....
The Insight's starting price is 20K and the 2nd gen Prius starts at 22k. I have read that they are going to keep selling the 2nd gen Prius for a few more years at the same price as the Insight. As for the solar roof panel being gimmicky, well you enjoy your blazing hot car in the summer time, because those Prius owner won't have to get into a car that is 200 degrees inside. The new Prius should cost more because it is a better car. Smoother, quitter and way more features. I forgot better mpg's
Oh by the way, over the last 6,000 miles, my wife's 2007 Prius has gotten 54.7 mpg. Basically, that means $23 to drive 500 miles. How much does it cost you to drive 500 miles? $60? $70? $80? Im not talking about filling your tank ether... Im talking about 500 miles, which would be about two tank fulls in a Monte Carlo.
0-108mph. The acceleration is only poor from a start. That's because from a stop the car has more then enough power to make the wheels spin, and the VSA will never let that happen, so it prevents any and all wheel spin killing acceleration from a start. That's why the 0-60 (9.5sec) time suck. Case in point, I was doing 40mph behind a minivan in a 50mph zone, so I floored it to go around it and by the time I got back in the lane infront of the minivan I was doing 75mph. That's a 2007 Prius.
mustangs and camaros costs much less than 42.645 usd . It's not my fault if GM,Ford and Chrysler don't put an hybrid engine into these cars improving their mpg. Take the look of a nice car and put an efficent engine into it and you will have the best of both world: beauty with intelligence!
priuses are not as ecofriendly as toyota commercials claim. the manufacturing of the batteries (harvesting, shipping, assembly, etc) causes the production of a single prius to give off more pollution than even that of a hummer. look it up
The only drawback to electric power is charge time. Materials science is nearly complete with eliminating that issue. The energy density of carbon nanotube based ultracapacitors promises unlimited charge cycles and extremely high energy densities. There was a recent breakthrough with lion batteries that show great promise. Fossil fuel powered vehicles don't stand a chance. If you did your homework, you'd know that.
I find it funny to watch people buy a car that they think is so cool. Then spend thousands putting more plastic on it, changing the wheels & exhaust. If they have any $ left over they mess with the engine, all the while beating the crap out of it. Then only a few years later they try and trade it in or sell it only to find out it isn't even worth anything and they still have 3 years of payments left. Now stuck with a car that drives rough is very loud and recognized by every cop in town.
@amoghthegamer I also want to point out that Toyota's hybrid system has the same warranty the Insight does. 8yrs/100k miles, that covers the battery, inverter, and all other hybrid components. A Prius starting at $23,000 still gets you more goodies, like smart entry & smart start, push button start, standard 7 airbags, including one for the drivers knee, 89g of Co2 per kilometer compared to 104g of Co2 for the Insight. For $2,000 more, I can get a larger car with more power, and better mpg.
How is 8 to 10 years considered the entire working life of a vehicle? If a major part like the transmission or motor of my vehicle needed replaced after 8 years of normal use, I would be pissed.
ICE = approx 30% efficiency. Needs a clutch to get moving. Mechanical loss through transmission. Electric motor = approx 90% efficiency. No clutch 100% torque from 0 rpm. Wheel or hub motors have negligible mechanical loss. In pure performance, ICE doesn't stand a chance against electric. Never has and never will.
@georgianborat I know you are quoting Jeff Dunham but maybe you should know what YOU are talking about. The Prius does not Idle. It has a much better design than the Insight that allows it to sit using no energy at all(except the instrament panel ect.). The Prius is design to allow the internal combustion engine to run at peak efficency at all times.
i was in a situation where i had to choose between those two cars i chose insight the reason for that it has smaller engine, lesser tax and to be honest insight looks far more futuristic and more attractive.
chris latham how do you do it??? i have a 2010 working well, every thing, only gives me 39 at most
Hybrid wars: The Insight strikes back!

Awesome, But why don't the brakes need replacement??what kind of brakes does it used???

2nd generation Prius owner, and Its a great car, comforable , and passes so many gas stations.
This time the new Honda Insight 2019 will beat the Prius Prime hands down easily in everything. Can't wait to see it
So, is the Prius the better car if you look past the price difference?
I know you don't realize this, but the 2004-2009 Prius, has twin reversible electric motors, with a max of 10,000rpm, that make 67hp & 295 lbs torque, that is powered by a 500 volt electric battery.

Those steering wheel buttons on the Prius don’t age well I have one
They both are great. If you have the money buy the Prius, if you don't buy the Insight.

Annual Fuel Cost (Yearly) - Accord $1,600 Camry $1,600 Prius $700

I would buy the insight just because I live with a Prius right now and I'm so used to the interior it's kinda boring.

nope sticker is 42K, but you can haggle down to 40K, government will pay 7.5K, most states pay from 2.5-7.5 K too. Here in Nebraska, the total price for a Nissan Leaf is $22,380 for the base and $24,810 for top of the line. The volt is $23,180 for the base and $25,189 for the top of the line.
Where is the Geo Metro? In the magazine they threw in the Geo Metro to see if it could achieve the same gas mileage as these two Hybrids and it did..
jeez people the prius is not the best maybe you should try both cars before you troll on here. Iam supporting the Inisight for 3 main reasons:
The downside of the Insights are:
-only 42.2 MPG instead of 48 MPG of the Prius.
Your point?
What type of engine is used to power the vast majority of industry and why do you think that is? If you have ever been to a factory of virtually any kind, most of the movement is powered by electric motors. If ICE is so marvelous, why isn't it used to power industry?
Just a minute. The Fit? That instrument cluster and steering wheel are actually from the Civic. Research, people. Research!
Thanks for readin and hope y'all get a Prius or something with 71mpg or close to it to help save our planet.
want joy of drive- honda
Want silent cabin-toyota
Want fuel save-both
= HONDA FTW !!
nice review. i love prius' interior.
in the upper right hand corner it asks if you prefer the older setup or what ever, click on it and it will return to regular broadcast. all vids are doing it now, real pain in the BUTT
More power to Prius. If you are driving on interstate, you need it.
I used to stick up for the insight but now the prius wins!
The Insight is a nice car but I would definitely chose the Prius.
Comparing these two cars is like comparing an ES 350 to an Accord or a TL to a Camry. While they technically achieve the same goals, one has a lot more to offer in the way of features and smoothness and refinement then the other.
The New Prius is defetly looking better with his new front.
Excelent cars!
The car is a boy?
YT is posting things upside down Love it.
Hey Im choosing between the insight and the Fit. Can someone tell which is better?
Insight
not always, gm's and Ford's hybrids are pretty nice.
is it true that the batteries in these cars are polluting the environment? and needs the car to travel at least 45000 miles to be at the break even?
Honda insight not popular car but Prius is most popular and economic car of world
Prius. Pretty?
Do you have cataracts??
Honda Prius & Toyota Insight..💚
The Prius offers a lot more then just gas mileage. Like I have said before, there are more features in this car then what any car it's size even offers. With the Prius it's not just about gas. For the people who own one they know what I am talking about. Talking about the Prius and just talking about it's mpg is like talking about an Acura RL and only talking about it's mpg. There is so much more to the car then just mpg.
@meesterbrian
still was $22,995 so yeah $23K, they had only the Navi and the LX in stock.
Both the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius have a better drag coefficient than a Bugatti Veyron.
my familly had 3 prius(dad, my little sis and me). but my sis bought insight this month.
in my opinion, prius win.
The prius interior is hands down better than insight. Outside, I guess I would go with the honda
GM needs to make a car exactly like the Prius with similar or better MPG/specifications and the exact competitive price.
But why compare them? Even though they both have a similar aerodynamic shape, the Prius is a bigger C segment car, and the Insight is a slightly smaller B segment car.
what is the battery life on the Prius??
Haters live a sad life. I will tell you how sad it gets.
I saw a kid around 20 years old posting negative comments on just about all the Prius videos. I checked his profile and he had 14 videos in his favorites. 13 of them were Prius vids. The 14th one was some Asian girl named Magibon. Anyway he would go to them just to be negative. It's like his life sucked so in stead of going to things he likes, he went to thing he hated just so he could try and piss people off.
It's sad, but true.
@RJL1981
oh no not locally, Iam talking about from Cali or NY. Iam just saying, once it does launch here, then you can get it down here. I didn't know you were purchasing right now, cause then, you'd have to buy later, I thought you were buying down the line....
he said for the prius that if the wind gets tangled up in the wheel well, it reduces drag...hmm...
Im talking about 500 miles, which would be about two tank fulls in a Monte Carlo.
it's almost as if today is a day where people will be pranking each other all the time
prius is the king of hybrid
Take the look of a nice car and put an efficent engine into it and you will have the best of both world: beauty with intelligence!
che figata i video a testa in giu!!
EPA, fueleconomy(dot)gov
Prius 2010 - 51/48/50
Prius 2004 - 48/45/46
Insight 2010 - 40/43/41
RX 450h 2010- 32/28/30
Monte Carlo 2007-16/24/19
priuses are not as ecofriendly as toyota commercials claim. the manufacturing of the batteries (harvesting, shipping, assembly, etc) causes the production of a single prius to give off more pollution than even that of a hummer. look it up
The only drawback to electric power is charge time.
You need to read up on ultracapacitors. Portable and instantly charged. There is a whole new world out there you are not aware of.
Should we all drive a Cadillac Escalade to feel a bit safer?
Not sure what mode they used to test the acceleration of Insight, S mode is even faster than normal D mode.
By the way the Prius tire size is 215/45/R17
