Sauber-Mercedes C9 Accelerations, Burnouts, Warm Up & Iconic Twin-Turbo V8 Sound on an airstrip!

- Definitely not the most common place to see a legendary Le Mans-winning Group C car, but it's precisely these unusual things that I love. The 'Classic' division of Mercedes-Benz brought to the 2023 Kilomètre Lancé one of their Sauber C9s, chassis 88-C9-04, which did some demo runs down Engadin Airport's runway in the hands of Bernd Mayländer.
This particular chassis was built in late 1988 and debuted at the Nürburgring 1000Km, driven by Mauro Baldi and Stefan Johansson. The car was able to win the Spa round of the 1988 World Sports Prototype Championship a couple of weeks after the DNF at the Nürburgring.
In 1989 it won the first round of the season in Suzuka, in the hands of Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi, and it obtained a couple more podium finishes during the season, the most important of which was the second place at Le Mans behind its twin, chassis 88-C9-03. After having served as a spare car, it was restored to its 1989 Le Mans, low-drag configuration and its now part of the Mercedes-Benz Museum collection.
The Kilomètre Lancé is a revival event of the original competition held in 1929 and 1930 as the starting event of the International St. Moritz Automobile Week. This week consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and the Bernina hillclimb race. For the second one, the dead-straight section of road between Samedan and Punt Muragl was the first asphalted road in Engadin and the venue for this spectacular race, in which the only thing that mattered was the maximum speed that could be achieved.
Of course nowdays these kind of sprint competitions are no longer held on public roads. The kilometer race, called by the organizers "Kilomètre Lancé", has been exhumed since 2021 as part of the modern International St. Moritz Automobile Week and it's held on the runway of Engadin Airport, in Switzerland, specially closed for this purpose. However Engadin Airport isn't only within sight of the historic venue, it also has a suitable track with its 1.8 km runway.
Enjoy the iconic M119 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine sound!

This and the 88C-V were terrifying sights when I played Gran Turismo as a kid. Nice to know my terror has been personified in this sound 😊
I totally understand what you are saying, when you are kid certain things have some kind of weird impact you. You are always seeing normal shaped cars on the street but when you see a group c car shape or any LMP car shape on a game you are like 😮, and with the speed of lightning you start to wonder how many more cars like this are in the world, you start to think of that very mysterious world of automotive culture that has not been discovered for you, at least that way it happened to me.
@@samuelberaha8284 Actually it's because my TS020 got figuratively and physically obliterated after I worked so hard to get it. Those fossils were fast for a bunch of older cars. Just one gapped the field by like 5 seconds a lap on le mans but the both of them started doing battle of the gods while I was a spectator too far behind to even watch lol
@@chrischarizard4067 Not too hard to imagine considering the power gap between them. The older cars were rockets producing somewhere in the 800 horsepower region while the TS0202 was at a much more milder 600 hp. Even if you could catch up in the corners, they'd pull far ahead in the long straights
Fun Fact: The Toyota 88C-V in real life isnt as good as Gran Turismo showed
@@tommitcx5463 I still wished for a visual updated version in later GT games, together with the Nissan R89.
I have never heard a turbocharged engine sound this good before. Legend!
Lol:)
you can't even hear them until they spool down. probably so big the air just flows straight through them at 3000rpm.
Group B Monsters too
Man Bozzy you might one of the luckiest people to be invited to take shots of those gorgeous group c MONSTERS
😁😉
My top 3 favorite cars change order all the time but this one always makes its way back to the top. The sound.. The engineering... That lump of fury slung low with those turbos... What a machine.
what are the other 2
@@clkgtr12 First gen lift back Toyota Celica. Specifically 76/77. This car often sits atop the #1 position
95 Porsche 993 (4th gen 911). The last of the air cooled. This Porsche routinely swaps with the 1987 959 depending on the way the wind blows. Can't be helped.
And then of course our friend here, the C9.
This was a hard list to put together and as with any person that's into cars comes with a mega-asterisk that states "Subject to change without notice"
@@CriticoolHit great picks man, yeah that happens with me too, sometimes even weekly i change my picks
Best sounding Group C car IMO
I have to see a C9 before i die, such a good looking and good sounding car
You and me both!!! Hopefully get to see one at Dix Mille in september
My favorite race car of all time.
Me too also with the c11
Mine too. And the sound has never been beaten
What an absolutely gorgeous machine. The side profile at 5:10 is amazing.
You can say that again. I could listen to it for the same reason as well.
Thank you Bozzy. It looks like this car likes to be driven hard, it does not like slow starts. The launch at 7:55 is very impressive.
No worries! Thanks for watching
Completely ballistic ❤
I remember standing close to it when starting up at Reitnau Hillclimb in the 90s, what a sound 👌
This video should be put in the adult section of TH-cam. What a sensational piece of work on one of the most beautiful group C racers! Both audio and video.
Thank you 19Bozzy92
😁😅 No worries, dude! Thanks a lot for the kind comment
Welcome to Group C
Love the turbos and wastegates in the side pods - protected; great standoff within the surrounding box; less likely to burn a mechanic; just nice!
8:14 the sound of the rumbly angry v8 coupled with the spooling turbo is just beautifully evil
Best sounding race car of all time
I dont believe that...u apparently havent heard many
@@JK-js2tdLet me guess? the 787b is the best? people have different tastes cmon
@@clkgtr12 i agree people have different tastes...and surprise...the 787 isnt the be all end all for me.
@@JK-js2tdit's good that you agree, so why say the guy hasn't heard many when he thinks the c9 sounds the best
Imo the C9 is by far the best sounding race car, and I dislike V8s
This car and the Jag XJR-12 are truly the pinnacle of what has existed with four wheels on Earth. ❤
One of the last true analogue beasts. Thank you for uploading it!
Music to my ears.
This dude actually pulled up in a Sauber C9 lol. What a legend.
Prolly had it brought in from his island, and I’m almost certain Clinton has done things in it as well.
Time to wipe!
I love these runway shots
Fantastic. As always with Group C
That V8 rumble is the best sounding LeMans race car ever! Period!! And still the best looking too!👌🥰👉♥️👍is music to my ears!👂Legend!
I remember buying the DLC for this car in Forza Motorsports 4. It's cool to see such great shots of this car up close.
😢 omg watching this gorgeous machine alive is so emotional
C9 and C11 are the undisputable GOATs of the peak GroupC era
awesome video Bozzy! and as always, thanks for the detailed description
No worries! Always a pleasure for me ;)
Best sounding v8 ever, same with historic Trans Am V8s, turbo Yamaha VMAX & Yamaha R1.
Same firing order, same perfect orchestral explosion sound notes
Perfect Perfection
One of the best looking racecars ever
Thanks for bringing us this great content on TH-cam. Great soiund in your videos!!
No problem at all! Thanks for watching
Born too late to see its racing days in person but it's one of my my favorite racecars in Assetto Corsa and in general
I love how angry these sound
Another awesome capture - thanks for always using good audio recorders and shooing it so well, lots of effort and it pays off
One of my Favorites of all time i guess on my list on the 3rd place behind the Mazda 787B and the unbeatable Michael Schumacher F1 Race car. But still in love for sure 😍 and u know what, the best thing is u can drive it as a casual in GT7 in VR! Absolutly Phenomenal.
Whoever runs this channel, never stop doing what you love recording these great cars, visuals and sounds 🫡
What a brutal and fantastic machine, thanks a lot for your footage, incredible as always!
Thank you so much for your comment!
I know the world can be a scary place these days but to be able to listen to a rare race car rip it up on an airstrip in Switzerland with Bozzy's usual attention to great video and sound quality while having my morning coffee... what a time to be alive
This and the Panoz GTR-1/LMP-1 are all tied for my favorite exhaust note of all time.
The Panoz..never see that one mentioned often!
@@JK-js2td It's a sound that has to be experienced in person. Fortunately, I got to hear it several times between '97-'02. Benefit of living near Laguna Seca and Sears Point
@@DickTruth i HEAR you brothah...Road Atlanta is at my backdoor...and as you know...Don bought Road Atlanta many years ago and made it a world class circuit. I remember when the Panoz came out and saw its peculiar shape dust the competition!
@@JK-js2td Hell yeah! Road Atlanta is one of my bucket list tracks. Cheers
The best run for me is at 7:56, that's a long burnout I'm sure...
But burnin rubber is NOT fast...it may be cool but its NOT fast
@@JK-js2tdy donde dice el que es rapido..🤷♂️
@@JK-js2tdwho gives a shit, it was badass
Iconic race car at a Iconic airport BIG THUMBS UP!
This car is absolutely different like others I love it
that acceleration with that beautiful sound 😮😊love it
What a Beast - Awesome Sound ! One of the best
Every kid should be blessed with the sound of this Car🥰
The closest car we have to that sound now is the Cadillac Gtp. God Bless v8’s.
Thank you!!
That car next to it during the warming of the engine😮😮😮
What a beautiful wagon❤
Then my focus realigns on the sauber murbling and growling❤❤❤
M119 is engine, non race version found in the 500E and 400E early to mid ‘90’s …
Awesomely
Probably my favourite race car. I was lucky enough to see the win at Le Mans in 1989.
This just sounds evil
I love the sauber c9 racecar😍
Thank you God, for Group C.
6:02 what an amazing shot
What a magnificent machine!
one of my favourite race cars
One of the most beautiful cars
Just awesome!💪👍
Such lucky drivers💙
Amazing ❤❤❤
i can just imagine at 5:00, a wild C9 taxiing round the airport
As a young Aussie living in the Uk at the time I saw these racing at castle donnington. I was so homesick for the sound of V8s! I did love the the silk cut Jags but hearing this…these became number 1.
Oh, that warm-up was some earporn...
And at 8 in the morning it was better than a nice hot coffee 😁
That crossplane i4 sounding split exhaust v8 will never get old
The One I love !
Magnificent beast
that white volvo 240 completely stole the show
My biggest enemy in Gran Turismo 4
Fond memories of seeing the C9s and C11s race at Brands, Donington and Le Mans. Gorgeous din.
Only car sicker than the c9 is the c11! Both so amazing.
Asseto corsa is the only game that has NAILED how this car sounds.
Fantastic sound with brut force and acceleration! The follow up C11 was the top! Amazing how those cars were driven in competition by schummi and other heroes in those years👊🏻🙏🏻
finally a c9 video
Mega cool
the best twin turbo v8 sound ever eard
Mate you keep bringing all the things I worked on back!!! Who are you? Oh btw, the cars look bad without bodywork Lol ... I was polite there
Le Mans cars were so much better looking back then.
That thing HAD to be doing over 200 mph!
Keep fighting schumi! ❤. Even though I think his car was marked #2..
I never knew the car was that short. It looks cool.
That sounds so V8 - it's delicious.
That’s music to my ears omg 😩😩😩😩
These people really don't know how lucky they are to see that legendary car driving in person. It's a shame that it's not properly set-up and is using those heavy-arsed gripless road tyres. Group C cars are by far the coolest cars to ever exist in motorsport.
Énorme...❤
Was für eine geile Kiste... gibt nix fetteres wiw Gruppe C bzw LM Autos🔥🔥
THAT SOUND RIGHT INTO MY VEINS!!!
wished my LS sounded like that
I want one
Love a good silver ⬆️
Watched a lot of Group C in the '80s - what is there to say about these fabulous machines that hasn't already been said. Whether by accident or design the FIA got it absolutely right: the fuel efficiency formula meant that the turbo cars like the Sauber's and Porsche's could dominate qualifying, only then to be reeled in by the Jag's during the race, with everything hinging on strategy and pit stops.
And then there was the sound - thunderous MB V8's and the Aston AMR1, the wail of 7 litre V12's, and all the time having to weave through the equally fascinating battles going on throughout the C2's.
Oh to be in Dingle Dell on a warm summer's day hearing these wonderful machines through the trees...
Cold natured.
I need to win the lottery so I can buy one of these
The sound is so identical to Yamaha M1 crossplane engine
Anyone know what the purpose of those two fuel injectors mounted to the valve cover might be for? @1:19
Finally. Finally you are posting a decent video again with a car I like.
He posts all kinds of videos with an assortment of vehicles for many to enjoy!
What event is this and when did it take place? Great sound.
You can find all the info in the video's description ;) And it generally takes place at the beginning of September
are the rear alloy wheels 20 or 21 inch?
From the type of money put into that car it should start and run like hell for sure
Good evening, do someone know when the c9 is next driving in switzerland or baden Württemberg? Thanks
Fastest group c car in the late 80s. That beast dominated le man for quite some time
Id give anything to have this
Sound like a big V8 American Car but much better🤤
Es propiedad de algún equipo privado??
