    I remembered when this first aired. I immediately recognized the bedroom. By the time Suzanne Pleshette turned on the light then turned to Bob, I was rolling on the floor laughing. Absolutely hilarious!

    I loved Suzanne Pleshette. She was a consummate professional and a lovely, powerful, strong human being. At a party in Beverly Hills, she walked in with her husband at the time, crossed the entire room, and walked up to me and kissed me on the lips (a friedly, motherly kiss on the lips). She was remarkable, exceptionally beautiful, and an amazing talent.

    Seems like no one remembers this was also a parody of “Dallas”, where one entire season was explained away as “Pam’s dream”. Still, so many comedy series have a hard time “sticking” the finale (“Seinfeld”, anyone?); I rank “Newhart” and “MASH” as the best two ever.

    I also liked the last episode of "Heat of the Night" where Chief Gillespie gets knocked-out from behind... then Archie Bunker wakes up in his favorite shouting "Meathead! Meathead! I just had this incredible dream! I was sheriff of this little hick town...!!"

    To think, they thought up this genius ending because TV Guide kept ruining the ending for other shows

    • @stevencramsie9172
      @stevencramsie9172 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually, Newhart's wife came up with the idea for ending the show that way a few years prior at a Christmas party. When he knew it was going to be the end of the series, only the director and the guys who built the set knew until 20 minutes before they shot it. The press was told that he was going to meet God at the very end.

    • @bradtorville5526
      @bradtorville5526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stevencramsie9172 The writers knew too. Bob had told them his plan when he arrived for the final episode. The press really weren't told anything. They just always had a way of getting hold of scripts and letting spoilers get out early so they wrote a final scene where Bob would get hit by a golf ball and then end up in heaven to speak with God. The joke was that they'd try to get George Burns to do it but they never even approached him because they'd never intended to do it at all. According to Bob, he'd said the tabloids had of course found out about that "fake" ending and teased that either George Burns or George C. Scott might appear as God. The joke was on them, of course, as Suzanne Pleshette appeared instead.

    I had to work the night of all the season/series finales. I taped it. I think I wore the tape out by replaying it so much. I stopped watching Newhart two or three seasons before the end. I much preferred The Bob Newhart Show. I thought this was great.

    This is how I wish 2020 ended . I had the most unbelievable dream about this coming up year there was a virus from China that shutdown the world, groups burning down buildings was called peaceful protest, Seattle had some autonomous zone , Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash, the black panther actor died of cancer,the west coast had wildfires,Alex Trebek died, Donald Trump had impeachment trials that failed, Joe Biden got elected president, Netflix had a show about a guy with a bunch of tigers, prince Harry and Princess Meghan left England, people got offended by almost everything, Tom Brady was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the XFL was back.

    ...but I can't help thinking it seemed like a slap in the face of Mary Frann who had so wonderfully portrayed his wife, Joanna, all through the series.

    • @bradtorville5526
      @bradtorville5526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hardly. She'd be keeping Emily up the rest of the night thanks to Bob's comments regarding the beautiful blond and sweaters. I think Mary was represented just fine.

      Suzanne Pleshette didn't stick around for the wrap up party because of that very thing. She felt it was wrong to steal anything from her. I think it was sweet of her to bow out. Mary Frann was a lovely and talented lady. May they both rest in peace.

      There was an earlier Episode called "Shall We Gather At The River?" where Bob rescues Joanna from drowning. And Mary Frann brought down the house after Bob inadvertently called Her "Emily." "Now I ask You everyone. What would be Your reaction if Your Husband called You by another Woman's name? You might put up with that in a Sweater and Jeans. Not in a Nightgown!"😂🤣😂😉🎤💃👖📺B.W.

    Absolutely the worst ending possible! To make the 80s Newhart show a nightmare disrespected the whole cast the whole story the whole lovable characters of that show.

    • @bradtorville5526
      @bradtorville5526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You're very much in the minority. Both were comedy shows and this was the perfect way to wrap up one while acknowledging its predecessor in a light-hearted and loving way.

      @ellymaschinowrinn8609 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't see it as disrespectful. I thought it was a funny, sentimental, surprising ending. Newhart still stands on its own for hilarious characters and situations. Both shows were fantastic comedies.

      @@bradtorville5526 what I was saying Brad,... It was Bob newhart's wife that came up with the idea,... And I didn't think that she had a right to have anything in it. But what I was saying was it characterized the '80s show as if they are all weirdos and stupid. But if you rewatch the '70s Bob newhart show they were weirdos and loonies also. So it was like saying that the '70s one was actually better in real life and the '80s one was like a nightmare of crazy nut heads. I was just personally disappointed with the ending. I wish Bob newhart's wife never would have even suggested that. And I don't mind being in the minority because sometimes the smallest voice is the most wise.
