Broke my heart that he passed. 😢 I'm 52 and was so privileged to have grown up with BOTH of his TV shows, from being a little kid to graduating high school. Bob was one of the greats.

there was actually a third that followed the two classic ones but it had low ratings and so the producers changed the concept midway through the single season which didn't help in building a fan base that would have eventually increase the ratings-even though the third show was flawed, Bob was as brilliant as usual.

And the childhood memories come flooding in.. I remember that I was supposed to be asleep by the time this show aired so I'd curl up on the top of the stairs listening to this opening while my parents were down in the TV room watching. What a great feeling. I wish I could go back. I miss my mom.

That's my great Aunt Anna Mae (my grandmother's sister), a beautiful 100% Finnish lady with the white scarf on her head, sitting opposite Bob Newhart on the train at 00:42. She was riding the train that day and a bunch of people hustled into the train station with cameras. She didn't know what was going on and went with the flow. Found out months later she was in the opening song for a hit TV show when surprise, she saw herself on national TV. Those were the days. RIP Aunt Anna Mae!

FUN FACT: The building they live in here (:52) is just SE of the corner of Thorndale and Sheridan, and right underneath this building, JUST out of view of the camera shot- is a public beach- George Lane beach. So where is is walking- he would be walking over sand. Just feet to his left is the lake. All of the balconies on this building look directly down on this beach. The show itself was a treasure trove of talent, and the vibe was sophisticated, which I liked. The writing was superb and Newhart's deadpan delivery, you got that feeling that he was the only sane person in the room -- except when he was with Suzanne Pleshette. She oozed class and brains.

Just started watching this on Hulu. The show is almost half a century old, but because it focuses on person-to-person interaction, and not some contrived plot or gimmick, it is still relatable. If anything, the old clothes, L trains, furnishings show that despite some superficial changes, some comedic challenges will always remain. As others have noted - the theme music is terrific, very 70s.

The city of Chicago loved the association it had with the show. The Bob Newhart show was ultimately commemorated with a statue of Newhart in character as Dr. Hartley, seated and facing an empty couch, as if conducting a therapy session in his office. The statue was temporarily installed in front of 430 North Michigan Avenue, the building used for exterior establishing shots of Hartley's office. The statue is now permanently located in the sculpture park adjacent to Chicago's Navy Pier entertainment complex.

I have cherished memories of watching Bob -- and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, too -- with family in my youth. A lot of the jokes probably went over my young head at the time, but I was aware enough to know these were shows to plan on catching week after week. There's nothing on air for kids to watch today that compares in class or content.

I kind of figured that Mr. Newhart's life in this world would be coming to an end due to his age and the fairly recent passing of his wife. It was expected, but you can never prepare for how it actually feels until it happens. But what a life! His legacy and body of work will be something to treasure for years to come. RIP

For those people who loved Chicago in the 1970s & early 1980s -- before it began its long, discouraging downward spiral into criminality, lawlessness & violence -- this opening sequence is highly evocative & nearly magical.

@@l.matthewblancett8031 Having spent 4 years as a graduate student in Hyde Park (likely before you were born), I'm a Chicago booster, Mr Blancett. However, I can read. Here's an assessment of the crime in 2023 up to early April (with citation)...
"...For one, 2,169 motor vehicle theft cases are a lot for only 100 days in a year. It represents a 165% rise compared to 2022. In addition, the rate was 349% more than in 2019.
Robbery cases are up by 26%
Burglary and breakings increased by 11%
      Theft is up by 24%
Aggravated battery cases went up by 31%
Cases of criminal sexual assault climbed by 12%
The only solace is that the Homicide and murder rates have reduced by 9% compared to 2022. However, the murder rate increased by 78% compared to 2019 because there were only 18 reported cases by this time in 2019."
Perhaps the crime rate in Chicago is lower than NYC, LA, Houston & Detroit, but I would not want my elderly mother to be walking in most parts of Chicago after dark.
There are several different locations at which one can find this sort of info on the frequency of Chicago crime; this is the one I used:
