I was living in LA at the time, and my sister called me from the east coast and told me to make sure that I saw the show, and not to let anyone tell me the twist. I'm so glad she did. Rarely does a sitcom leave one as stunned as I was.
Seriously one of the best series finales ever. The audience went nuts since even they didn't know it. To make "Newhart" a complete dream of Bob Newhart's character is genius. What a perfect way to end a series...kudos to whoever thought of that.
I think this is probably the most brilliant episode of TV ever made. To have watched "The Bob Newhart Show" in the '70s - the funniest show of its time, and tremendously missed after it went off - then have this show run all those years, then it turns out to be from the better show of the '70s, is just awesome stuff. Having the end theme music from the earlier show, that was the crowning touch. Can't believe they actually did it, pure genius.
Genius of Bob Newhart. Thanks to this finale, you could call "Newhart" a spin-off of "The Bob Newhart Show". In real life, Susanne Plesatte (Emily/End Scene Wife) was married to Tom Poston (George/Handyman).
29.5 million viewers watched this episode, and it brought in an 18.7 rating and a 29 share. That was enough to rank it as the most-watched program the week it aired. Talk about going out with a bang.
Classic ending for a series, the best, it was great and you never saw it coming. It wasn't til now that I recognized a future co-star from the Drew Carey Show....
After watching the ER finale, a friend and I were criticizing it for how un-creative it was. Without a doubt, the best ending ever for a series was Newhart.
Wow! Mimi from The Drew Carey Show. This ep all of a sudden popped into my head today. Have no idea why. Had to find and watch it again. I remember this ending was shockingly genuis.
I saw this in real time as it aired and goose bumps came over me as I cheered. I never liked his second series as much as his first series. This was absolute genius!
I watched this show from start to finish. I was 14 when it debuted and almost 22 when it ended in 1990. The finale was a perfect one because for years, people and Tv critics kept comparing it to 'The Bob Newhart Show". Saying that "Newhart" was okay but it doesn;t measure up to Bob's previosu show, (Despite that it lasted 2 years longer). In the end, they gave everyone what they'd wanted...Bob and Emily. Perfect!
I cannot possibly agree more that this was the best finale ever. I will never forget the utter shock I felt when that bedroom light went on. Sheer brilliance! Thank you for the upload.
Tears and jubilation on this final episode that was made. It was an awesome show loved it. Finale one of the best ever I don't know if any can top that:) :( :)
By the final season, the extras and co-stars had just about taken over the show - too bad, because Dick and Joanna were the rock we needed to keep the series "real".
I have laughed over memories of this episode for years and am tickled to be able to laugh at it again. Bob Newhart is over the top funny without filth----what a guy!
THE GREATEST SITCOM EVER AND THE BEST SERIES FINALE BY LIGHT YEARS! I remember watching reruns for this and the old Bob Newhart shows when I was a kid. Notice that the moment that the set from the old show is shown at 7:12, some audience members instantly recognize it and cheer. Judging by the audience reaction at 7:34 (when Bob's wife from his old series is shown) one would think that a rock star had entered the room. Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette truly had rock star status.
Epic TV history, can never be topped. Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad created a spoof of this scene (Malcom in the Middle....Cranston and Kaczmarek) but did not use it out of respect.
Greatest finale ever! I don't know why sitcoms feel the need to end on a maudlin, weepy note; this is how a sitcom should end--worthy of its star. The only problem I have with this clip, presumably from a syndicated rerun, is that it's missing the originally-aired "capper": the "Bob Newhart Show" end-theme playing as the credits flash on the screen. See the "Newhart finale" video (the short, 2:40 one) to see the ending as originally aired on CBS.
Yes.. that was Lisa Kudrow... Greatest finale ever!!! I remeber that my Father was working the night this first aired... I tried to describe it to him, but I could not do it justice. To this day, nobody can beat Bob Newhart's delivery. Fantastic!!!
My late mother and I were absolutely howling with laughter when this was broadcast -- especially with the two Darryls talking and Suzanne Pleshette. No one could have seen either of those coming!
The best ending ever for a sitcom, hands down. The local station that I was watching it on didn't run the final scene because they didn't get the memo from CBS corporate that this episode was 30 seconds longer than normal. A news anchor broke in and started teasing stories for the 11 o'clock news just as Bob was waking up next to Emily! They ran the full ending during the 11 o'clock newscast. Thanks for all of those wonderful Monday nights, Newhart!
It was Newhart's wife who came up with the dream concept...the show was in its 4th or 5th season when she thought of it so the had plenty if time to lead into the whole "selling the Inn to the Japanese investors storyline"
muchos no me van a entender lo que escribo, pero hace unos años escuche de este final que es uno de los mejores de la television... y me puse a ver la serie completa, y simplemente ame el final, mejor que el de seinfeld y el de los sopranos
I think I was at work when this first aired. When my wife told me the ending I laughed and laughed without even seeing it. A brilliant idea! Glad you posted it.
Brilliant ending!! Mr. Newhart is a true entertainer, I actually loved this ending-BUT I've always been a huge "Bob Newhart Show" fan-grew up with him as a kid. Did my homework in college to the reruns, both him and Suzanne Plechette will always be masters of their craft!
now here's the rub to this whole episode. when Bob got nailed by the ball it cut to a commercial. Nearly 90% of the people watching screamed and turned OFF the televisions and started to complain that the show could not end like that. The other 10% who kept watching got the biggest surprise and gotcha ever.
one of those dream sequences in a tv series that actually worked. Most dream sequences just leave the audience feeling screwed over. This one actually worked
I think it's impossible to describe this to someone who "wasn't there." Two different shows in two different decades, beloved characters spanning over 14 years of programming and 18 years of time. And then...in the FINAL minute, seeing the two plots tied together, with the final music and credits reminiscent of the original show. No one saw THAT coming. :-) Pure genius. If you "weren't there," it probably seems underwhelming. But if you WERE there, you'll never forget it. :-)
I almost died watching this when CBS first ran it. I watched the "Bob Newhart Show" when I was little so I recognized the bedroom set immediately. The best finale ever!
One of many things that made this whole series work was that Bob Newhart did not insist of having all (or the best) lines or always be in frame even though it was his show. He knows great characters when he see them and let other people do their thing as well.
Newhart was brilliant, case closed. It was the biggest slap in the face to the Dallas shower dream and St Elsewhere's head-scratcher finale. A British sitcom called Brittas Empire, 1991-97, had the main character wake up on a train and realize all the people he had worked with for the past 8 yrs were passengers on the train. Only his wife was real. Roseanne tried a dream bit her last year, but her last year is forgettable.
When this first aired, the final scene closed with the music from 'The Bob Newhart Show,' not the music from 'Newhart.' But in the reruns, they switched it. No idea why b/c it was a great touch.
I liked the Bob Newhart Show reunion where Bob Hartley, as a psychologist, was trying to figure what the dream meant and Howard talked about this weird dream he had with a genie.
that's the wife from the Bob Newart Show back in the 70's WOW so lemme get this Bob Newart had a second show but it was in the 80's called ''Newhart'' but the whole episode of the show till the series finale end was nothing but a dream WOW one of the best ending of a show AMAZING!!!!!
Did anyone else see Bob Newhart on the The Big Bang Theory? It was in the episode called "The Proton Resurgence" Season 6 Episode 22. He was spot on with his timing and comedic ability! Amazing as he has been his entire career! I hope they put him on again!!!
I was living in LA at the time, and my sister called me from the east coast and told me to make sure that I saw the show, and not to let anyone tell me the twist. I'm so glad she did.
Rarely does a sitcom leave one as stunned as I was.

His wife, who passed away just today.
Pure genius. I remember when I watched this live and thought it was great. They don't make TV shows like this anymore.
Just got done watching Bob on Jimmy Kimmel's show and he explained that the idea of him waking up from a dream was his real wife's idea. Epic finale.
Bob, Suzanne, and Tom were just soooooooooooooo great at what they did.
Genius. This can never be topped.
I think this is probably the most brilliant episode of TV ever made. I can only describe this in one word-CLASSIC!!!!!
That finale was brilliant!
Genius of Bob Newhart. Thanks to this finale, you could call "Newhart" a spin-off of "The Bob Newhart Show". In real life, Susanne Plesatte (Emily/End Scene Wife) was married to Tom Poston (George/Handyman).
Her voice and the way she looked, oh my!!!!
This was the re-run version. The original aired version ended with the old "Bob Newhart Show" theme song, which made the end gag even funnier.
Agreed. BEST finale of all time. So happy to see this on here.
29.5 million viewers watched this episode, and it brought in an 18.7 rating and a 29 share. That was enough to rank it as the most-watched program the week it aired. Talk about going out with a bang.
It was an excelleny way to end a series .. tied into the old one .. a classic :)
Classic ending for a series, the best, it was great and you never saw it coming. It wasn't til now that I recognized a future co-star from the Drew Carey Show....

Wow! Mimi from The Drew Carey Show. This ep all of a sudden popped into my head today. Have no idea why. Had to find and watch it again. I remember this ending was shockingly genuis.
TV Guide once voted the finale of "Newhart" as one of the most unexpected series finales of all-time.
And I couldn't agree more!
I saw this in real time as it aired and goose bumps came over me as I cheered. I never liked his second series as much as his first series. This was absolute genius!

Best ending ever
This is probably the best season finale I've ever seen. I haven't seen this in years. Thanks for posting it.
I cannot possibly agree more that this was the best finale ever. I will never forget the utter shock I felt when that bedroom light went on. Sheer brilliance! Thank you for the upload.
It was mentioned on a special that the surprise of Susanne Pleshette was spoiled as the audience recognized the bedroom. They hadn't anticipated that.
Tears and jubilation on this final episode that was made. It was an awesome show loved it. Finale one of the best ever I don't know if any can top that:)
:(
:)
breaking bad did a great tribute to this
I also liked the very, very end where instead of the cat (in Newhart's voice) saying "Meow," it's "QUIET!!!"
the entire show was just a dream.
Most amazing series ending ever.
Thank you very much! I've never seen the ending before now.
Best finale ever!
Did anyone recognise Kathy Kinney who played Mimi Bobeck The Drew Carey Show?
Outstanding and the best ending every!!! Everyone was great!!!! I laugh everytime I see it! thanks for posting.

best ending ever!! loved it when i was a kid watching it and lost brought me back here to revisit!!! bob newhart is a genius!
One of the best shows ever. Love Bob Newhart
wow i have never seen this episode! great, great work! its really rare when television can truly make you feel good and smile. wonderful cast!
My favorite part at 4:11! "QUIET!"
Epic TV history, can never be topped.
Vince Gilligan of Breaking Bad created a spoof of this scene (Malcom in the Middle....Cranston and Kaczmarek) but did not use it out of respect.
This was one of my favorite shows and until today, I never saw the ending. Thanks for posting.
At 3:20, one of the wives is Lisa Kudrow in a brunette wig.
Allen Booth 3:52 lisa kudrow talks.
Whoa, they predicted the Kardashians
Greatest finale ever! I don't know why sitcoms feel the need to end on a maudlin, weepy note; this is how a sitcom should end--worthy of its star. Oh god, thank you so much for downloading this. Too funny!!!! I miss Suzanne. She was so beautiful and charming. Thanks again.
This is without a doubt the BEST series finale I have even seen!
Yes.. that was Lisa Kudrow... Greatest finale ever!!! I remeber that my Father was working the night this first aired... I tried to describe it to him, but I could not do it justice. To this day, nobody can beat Bob Newhart's delivery. Fantastic!!!
Great stuff I miss this show.Thankyou

Thanks for all of those wonderful Monday nights, Newhart!
No series finale could ever top this one! Magic!
Excellent!
Absolutely outstanding! And the late, great Suzanne Pleshette was, in my opinion, one of the sexiest women on television.
Brilliant!
It was Newhart's wife who came up with the dream concept...the show was in its 4th or 5th season when she thought of it so the had plenty if time to lead into the whole "selling the Inn to the Japanese investors storyline"
"Wear more sweaters" is right! Both women were gorgeous.
Classic - no other word fits - simply a classic ending - the best ever!!!
muchos no me van a entender lo que escribo, pero hace unos años escuche de este final que es uno de los mejores de la television... y me puse a ver la serie completa, y simplemente ame el final, mejor que el de seinfeld y el de los sopranos
no comprehende espanol...
vale. No podrias hacer eso en la epoca de Internet
I think I was at work when this first aired. When my wife told me the ending I laughed and laughed without even seeing it. A brilliant idea! Glad you posted it.
I remember this ending its the best of any series finale... Brilliant
Love this. THE BEST season finale EVER,. Loved the cheers for the late, great Suzanne Plashette
Brilliant ending!! Mr. Newhart is a true entertainer, I actually loved this ending-BUT I've always been a huge "Bob Newhart Show" fan-grew up with him as a kid. Did my homework in college to the reruns, both him and Suzanne Plechette will always be masters of their craft!

well, it's official; having Lisa Kudrow and Kathy Kinney in small parts makes this the best series finale of all-time!!!
one of those dream sequences in a tv series that actually worked. Most dream sequences just leave the audience feeling screwed over. This one actually worked
As far as I'm concerned, all other shows are fighting for the title of second best ending - this cannot be beaten.
This was GREAT!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still, to this day, the best finale ever.
I somehow missed the ending all this years, but had heard about it. I feel very satisfied!
great episode
Which was the better part-when the Darryls finally talked or when we find out it was all a dream by Bob Hartley?
I almost died watching this when CBS first ran it. I watched the "Bob Newhart Show" when I was little so I recognized the bedroom set immediately. The best finale ever!
One of many things that made this whole series work was that Bob Newhart did not insist of having all (or the best) lines or always be in frame even though it was his show. He knows great characters when he see them and let other people do their thing as well.

Roseanne tried a dream bit her last year, but her last year is forgettable.
This was the best Series Finally of any other show
This was, without any doubt, the cleverest thing ever done by any television show, ever!
utterly brilliant ending
When this first aired, the final scene closed with the music from 'The Bob Newhart Show,' not the music from 'Newhart.' But in the reruns, they switched it. No idea why b/c it was a great touch.
Brilliant
R.I.P. Mary Frann and Suzanne. Thanks for everything.
Classic !!!!!! Original !!!!!!! I Love it
I loved that ending
Tom Poston is pure gold!
@ 3:15, the girl in black is Lisa Kudrow in one of her early role before playing Phoebe in "Friends".
I love that Kathy Kinney is in this!
Best. Moment. EVER.
They finally speak !! Yes, it is the best finale ever !
Best series finale EVER!!!
LOST brought me here too!!! Stay LOST!!!! I LOVE LOST!!!!
best last episode of all time!!!
Did anyone else see Bob Newhart on the The Big Bang Theory? It was in the episode called "The Proton Resurgence" Season 6 Episode 22. He was spot on with his timing and comedic ability!
Amazing as he has been his entire career! I hope they put him on again!!!
The whole show was a dream? As if I never knew this. Iv watched this show many times. I realize now how many times iv seen this parodied
Genius.
Larry, Darryl and Darryl were the greatest characters ever
One of the few intelligent us tv sitcoms
