    Mike Mignola was "minimally involved" in the reboot. He helped with some ideas and offered some advice, but was not involved in design or production and just executive produced it. He was actually far more involved in the Del Toro movies

      @@AlphaRookie I read it in several interviews with the man. They just took a bunch of his work, his money, and a couple ideas and basically kicked him to the curb. I have seen videos and interviews with Del Toro where they are discussing how the characters are going to look, designs, interactions, etc. It wasn't as true to the source material, but had more of the creators involvement and a sense of love and care for the property from the people making it. This feels like a big "well fuck you Del Toro, how dare you want creative control and no interference, we can make something better than you can.... we'll basically make "HELLPOOL" and rake in the money!"

    • @jwtrailers5317
      @jwtrailers5317 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep this was very much a producer controlled feature (Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin). They even had Neil Marshall's DOP fired as a 'power play', to bait him into doing what they want, and it sort of worked. The absolute shit show of a production is all to see on screen - a disjointed, and poorly made film.

    • @mariod1547
      @mariod1547 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @james paul I never heard him say a negative thing about the Del Toro movies. Only thing I've heard is Del Toro leans more to the fantasy aspect, and the 2019 has more plot elements from the source material. Where did you hear he dislikes them?

    • @mariod1547
      @mariod1547 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @james paul And I heard they did consider making a third, but Del Toro couldn't get the funding he needed.

    Unfortunately i feel like this is the direction a lot of movies are ending up... where directors and actors who get great casting but then half way through filming they're getting thrown into "no, you need to change the script to say..." or "do this instead..." by other higher-ups and that is sad bc it ruins potentially good movies. I'm still going to go see this though.

      @@nastylittlecritter And or some adaptations of more obscure and unknown folk tales. New stuff doesn't need to live in the shadow of the comics.
      I'd prefer if they dropped the reboot universe, implied that everything we don't see is more or less exactly like those events happened in the comics (by directly telling some) and redesign the makeup to set it apart from the reboot and do the comic look and tone justice.
      I think the franchise could benefit from distancing itself from the "Legendary AF" "One hell of a Superhero" "R rated gore-real" marketing.
      You can have a monster-centric horror world with an unkillable protagonist and still work as tried and true horror. A man obligated to a dangerous job simply because he was born for no other business who constantly finds himself outliving his friends and colleagues makes for a really compelling character.

Teaching the studio that they can't just crap out an indy comic movie will force them to do things right and actually care about the source material like they did with the Crow, Deadpool, and the first two Hellboy movies. Rewarding crap will just get you more crap.

    Sorry, but no. Neil Marshal gets the blame too for this movie being hard to follow. After the news of the movie's troubled production came out, I guess everyone started saying that it was all studio's fault while Marshal wanted to make a great movie. But Mignola just confirmed in his recent interview that two pointless ideas in this movie were from Marshal. Luchador Vampire and Lobster Johnson were Marshal's ideas, and they are pointless to this movie's story. They're just fan service. Those characters and their history in the comics allows you to make an entire movie about them, but you just shoehorn them as cameos for no rhyme or reason. The point of this reboot was to get smaller, wasn't it? Then adapt one of those small, straightforward one-off stories from Hellboy into the movie. Don't shove every big and small story into one giant mess of a movie. This reboot shot itself in the hove.

    It's pretty irksome when i hear Rotten Tomatoes get criticized about it's score, and the whiners don't even know how it works so glad you cleared that up. What's also annoying is that the people don't even bother reading the reviews. Most of the critics are not fanboys of Del Toro or Hellboy comics, they are doing their best to be objective about the film and their experience with it. I wanted this movie to be good( and hey maybe I'll enjoy when i stream it) but i am not going to go all the way to theater and throw my money away to watch it, not to mention the expenses of getting there and returning, food, paying for family or date etc on a subpar movie. I rather no Hellboy movies than them churning out cash grabs shitty films.

  • @dane103
    @dane103 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the review. HUGE Hellboy fan and I was let down before even going yesterday and it was EXACTLY as you say here. The design and care put into this movie was evident and I caught myself wondering why the hate was so strong. This movie is a dozen times better and more entertaining than MIB 3, RIPD, Ghostbusters (2016) and a dozen other recent movies somewhat similar. The tone was obviously trying to do an Army of Darkness, tongue- in-cheek thing and got sullied by what I can only imagine as a thousand "Make it like Deadpool/Guardians of the Galaxy!" requests from people who have likely never read Hellboy before. It was certainly odd seeing that tug of war happening on screen but my shock was at how much I was okay with 75% of this movie. Cut out some of the lesser CGI aspects and lose the shitty rock soundtrack cues and this could have been pretty outstanding. I too really got excited when Marshall got hired as I could just see what he might do based upon all his other films. Somehow the talent involved and Harbor's commitment to the role won me over. It shone through the shitty handling of the obviously troubled production. I am certainly buying this on BluRay just to replay certain scenes that stuck with me. The Baba Yaga scene even rivals the creepiness of Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth eye hands scene. I look at this movie as one I will watch often just to appreciate it for what it is and what it does well. Sad they likely won't get to retry with less interference and a more dry, gothic R tone. Get that Netflix series going ASAP!

    You are right about Rotten Tomatoes and I often bring it up when people use it to try to compare movies to each other. RT scores are a totally inapproriate tool for that because they give you an impression of what proportion of reviewers liked/disliked it, but not on how good they thought it was.
    So is a film where 90% of the audience think its fairly good better than a film where 70% of people thought was absolutely excellent but the others didn't care for it at all? Difficult to say, but people who use RT scores will claim that the former is obviously better. It has a higher rating!

      I haven't seen it yet but from what I can guess from reading nearly all of the mignaloverse (the hellboy comic universe) you should only need to read the original hellboy run. It's really worth reading even if this movie ends up being terrible. Definitely don't just read Wild Hunt though, it isn't a good starting point and is in fact the end of the original hellboy comics, not including the series after, Hellboy in Hell (which is really good).

      "I will admit I’d have liked a version that was true to the comics."
      Which this movie definitely wasn't. Hellboy doesn't swear in the comics, nor did Professor Broom. Nor were their relationships bitter like this movie portrayed. Nor was the tone of the comics managed like an edgelord power fantasy with violence on the level of Happy Friends. This movie is as accurate to the Hellboy comics as Resident Evil movies were accurate to the games.

      If you weren't a comic fan, never really heard of or seen anything with Hellboy in it, how do you think you would feel about the movie??
      A lot of critics/movie-goers aren't Hellboy fans, so pandering to a small demographic (made even smaller by the hard "R" rating) is a sure recipe for disastrous box office numbers. Yes, people who recognize the bit cameos and characters, the easter eggs and storylines used might give this a 5 or 6 out of 10... but the average movie-goer comparing it to Perlman and Del Toro? 2 or 3 out of 10 tops.

    I don't follow the channel. I just came across you a few months ago, probably when the first Hellboy trailer came out due to a TH-cam recommendation or something, and I enjoyed listening to you talk about the differences between the films and the comics. I, myself, don't read or care about the comics and enjoyed the Del Toro movies but thought they lacked something, particularly the second one.
    So, after going to see Hellboy at 11 AM while my daughter was in preschool, I came home and mentioned I'd seen it to others, only to find out it's apparently terrible or something. So I came back to see specifically what you thought and I was expecting to be annoyed by a whining fanboy trashing of the movie, but you were really even-handed about it and I appreciate that.
    I think I enjoyed it... well, given the press, probably a lot more than most people. Violence, vulgarity, and action are definitely well within my wheelhouse and I thought it was a fun movie, though it definitely felt like far too much was packed in. I didn't hear about the problems and am very disappointed that Marshall was treated so poorly, as I love The Descent and Doomsday. It didn't feel like one of his movies and it definitely needed to be paced out more, but the character and monster designs were great, the action was good, I liked Harbour and the rest of the cast, and I instantly walked out of the movie, looked up who Thomas Haden Church was playing, and decided I needed to see a movie about that character immediately. As a non-fan of Hellboy and Mignola, Lobster Johnson was worth the price of admission for me. But I was definitely satisfied, even if it was too bloated with stuff going on and all sense of nuance trimmed out.

    A lot of this was very 'eh, that's fine.' I didn't think any of it was really offensive, and what of it that I enjoyed I did quite enjoy. A lot of it I found would have been better if they a) corrected the tone (I like swearing but not all characters should have been swearing and b) fleshed out their references a bit better - I would have liked to hear just a reference to the fomorian giant Grom and for Gruagach to have just been a faerie and they definitely should have bloodied up the blood queen (I love the imagery of Nimue standing up from the chest in the comics).
    Just needed that little, little bit extra.

    The Producers were feuding with the director. And eventually took over post-production and chopped up the film in the editing room just to spite him.
    Which is probably why it comes off as so uneven and tonally inconsistent.
    Apparently Neil Marshall wanted it to be tonally consistent with the comics. But the Producers just wanted it to be more like Deadpool.
    I'm hoping for a directors cut.

      @godzillarex888 I'm not saying all Producers. But most of them are clueless.
      Even Spielberg screws up sometimes.
      Producers need to know how and when to be helpful.
      They need to know when to give the director freedom and when to step up and rein them in.
      Just read about his relationship as a producer for the Transformers movies.
      Perfect example.

    Just because this movie followed the comics closer than the Del Toro films doesn't mean it was good. The Del Toro films at least had something this film didn't: Heart.

    Best review on TH-cam! I actually enjoyed the movie more then Del Toros Hellboy. Del Toros hellboy was so far from the comics if it had been a marvel or dc movie fan would have crucified Del Toro for it. Every time I hear someone compare Hellboy 2019 to Del Toro Hellboy I get a strong urge to back hand the shit outta them

    I’m sorry, but if a superhero movie is bad, regardless of whether or not the characters are independently owned...shouldn’t the fans of the series/characters NOT go see it? Hell, some of the negative reviews I’ve seen and heard CAME from fans of Hellboy! Also, how is Millennium Films not sued yet considering the possible interference they had a hand in the film’s final cut?

    My problems with the film was that it felt rushed, the camera angles during the fights were a bit hard to follow, the holy sword Excalibur is what brings the Apocalypse and not the right hand of doom which is an awful idea, the character arc for Hellboy made no sense as at some moments whenever he shows regret about killing them and refuses to follow orders it just goes to him instantly wanting to kill the blood Queen, I didn't like it was in the modern day and age, his father and the original group had eternal youth (which was bizarre), I don't wanna be harsh here but I felt like there was too much CGI in the film, and also the fact that the blood Queen just took the hits and didn't actually do anything against Hellboy in terms of an actual fight. I would say this film would've been good for the viewers if they've never heard of Hellboy and just love constant action, gore and constant rotations on fights with tons of swearing.
    Now I honestly think that this could be great if they get it right in the sequel..... But I also feel like it could've a hundred times better if they made the film longer with less cuts but it would've been a thousand times better if it was a series as they could do a better plot and build up on character arcs, and even if it had a low budget then I would say that they could make costumes for monsters and use CGI for big monsters and demons

      Hellboy movies have always had a box office curse to them to a degree... even the good Del Toro movies came out at the wrong times. Hellboy came out shortly after "The Passion of the Christ" and suffered some backlash due to the religious fervor that movie caused and with a character like "HELLboy" they boycotted it out of ignorance. And Hellboy 2 came out a couple weeks before "The Dark Knight", which is arguably one of the most hyped and well regarded comic book movies ever and had tons of press due to the unfortunate and untimely death of Heath Ledger.
      So, no... best not to try and make another movie for a while. but like others have said, it might work okay for a tv show.

      They were trying to capitalize on the name and fan base from the first two and jump on the Deadpool bandwagon without studying what actually made those films work.
      I imagine the pitch meeting wenta bit like this; "It's the comics 25th anniversary, the people already kinda know about the character from the first two movies, and there is a whole segment of rabid fanboys that will love anything we put on screen as long as we throw a bunch of nods and references to the comics (even if we do it in a crappy, nonsensical way), and hey Deadpool was successful with a tiny budget, so lets just throw a ton of F-bombs and silly gore into the movie along with a bunch of lame attempts at humor and it will be a license to print money gentlemen!"

    I 100% agree that this movie got unfairly dogpiled and I do not understand why. I actually watched it for the first time the other day and I was blown away at how much fun I had watching it. This felt like a good representation of what indie comics are like compared to the Marvel mainstream comics. They did stuff in their movie that you'll never see in a Marvel movie. They had a very diverse cast, wove in things from dark fairy tales, didn't shy away from violence, and had great/scary character designs. For my tastes, this is exactly what you'd want after endless paint by numbers marvel movies and it delivered. It's more entertaining than most of the marvel origin movies. I had a lot of fun watching it and that's what matters most. Also, they had a werejaguar in it.... that wins everything in my book.

    Here's the thing about the plot (imo), the movie gives so little context for most things that if you haven't seen read the comics, you'll be totally confused, there's practically no context given to anything. If you have read the comics, you'll probably just be laughing the whole time because they just took stuff from the comics and basically just made it worse, the Lucha Libre thing and a few other bits were decently accurate, but with no context, and them just changing stuff and making it worse really didn't make the movie great. Also, the tone is just totally fucked and so are some of the character motivations. I didn't expect this to be comic-accurate, and didn't want it to totally be comic accurate, but there was so much stuff that they just took and made worse that I was just laughing the whole movie.

    Love the comics but, honestly, this movie is just unwatchable for me. Partly because it’s sad that the studio twisted what could have been a good movie into what we got (same reason why I’ll never watch Josstice League again). The version we got just doesn’t seem to understand the character at a fundamental character though so that even the moments we got that were from Mignola and Marshall were spoiled

    I feel like Hellboy would do so much better as a Netflix show. The movie felt like a bunch of different episodes of a show thrown together. I love Hellboy, the originals were some of the first comic movies I watched as a kid. When I was about 7 or 8, the Golden Army came out and I loved it. I haven't read much of the comics but I'm working on collecting all of the omnibuses of Hellboy and then reading the spin-offs!

    Hellboy seems like a missed opportunity for a tv show. The episodic nature of some of the issues, the ability to tie in one shots without necessarily needing a main narrative. I mean Supernatural is a massive success and Hellboy would probably rival that if not surpass it in the right hands. Who knows maybe we'll get one but I doubt it. Would love for HBO to pick it up onto their roster.

    I watched it some hours ago and I don't know man, I really think it was that bad, they crammed so much in the story, most of the stuff was really poorly executed and they went so fast with it that plotpoints didn't felt earn or natural. Either way, the script was just... Ugh.
    And as a Hellboy fan, I feel they butchered so much the characters and the story, like what someone who doesn't really understand Hellboy think of him as. I don't like saying I hate things, that's a waste of energy, but let's just say I kinda despise this movie. Sorry Mike, I tried being optimistic.
