- Hellboy. It's a comic-turned-movie franchise that wasn't necessarily in need of a reboot. But we got one. And god bless him, David Harbour gives it his all, and he's great. But the movie around him is awful. It's got sins like you wouldn't believe. Just... watch the video and you'll see.

That Baba Yaga house isn’t a sin. That’s actual correct in folklore for her. One of the many few things they actually got down.
Seriously, Baba Yaga is the only good thing about this movie.

@@delfin7461 It had all the right ingredients but was cooked poorly. Hellboy might work better in a TV series format like American Gods, rather than cramming 5 different serials from the comic book into a single movie.

@@Da_Swifta I did like Rise of Skywalker, but it was super fast pace as they tried to tell a story and retcon their mistakes that happened in the first two movies. But they made up for that by bringing back Palpatine and showing just how powerful he really was when at full strength.
I love that they reference Revan and Bastila! That's one of the greatest highlights in the movie, in my opinion.

Is it me, or is the CG really terrible during a lot of scenes in this movie? I feel like that's a reoccurring thing. I saw Jurassic World and thought that looked undeniably like real dinosaurs, but then Spider-Man FFH couldn't make a bell tower look like it's actually there. Maybe I'm just getting better at seeing through CGI, maybe movies are getting lazier, maybe it's Maybelline.

No, Hellboy's CGI really is terrible. CGI has come a long way but it can be still be hit or miss for some movies. It just depends who's behind the VFX. It still boggles my mind how Marvel, as big and rich of a company as they are can somehow make both visually breathtaking digital characters like Thanos and at the same time could not afford to fix those comically bad green screen edits in Black Panther. Yet smaller franchises like the Godzilla monsterverse has had pretty consistent CGI quality throughout every film.
@@bretbuckley704 I'm pretty sure the inconsistency of Marvel CG is due to resource allocation, they were making multiple movies at once so they put the B team on Black Panther while their A team were working on Infinity War

Each day going after a different mythical creature or race, with our favourite fish and firefly
100% agree. Some things are movie worthy because you can get enough backstory, context, etc into a 1-3 hour period, and it be good by the end - Perhaps with one or two sequels intended to cover the whole thing.
But Hellboy has to skip SO MUCH for it to cover everything, by the end you are laughing at the amount of assumptions it makes and lack of details. Series for this would be absolutely amazing I feel (and since Supernatural is ending, perhaps Bobby Singer and Eric Kripke should direct it, haha).

middle ages: roughly 500 - 1500 AD.
But yes, full plate armor in the 6th century? Highly unlikely.
The real problem with Hellboy 2019 was not having Guillermo Del Toro involved.
I disagree. I want to see someone make a movie that is true to the character in the comics.

@@darkashtar and he also responded to Mignola's objection that the movie wasn't true to Hellboy as a character by saying "this is my Hellboy. Not yours." It's the entire tone of the character that's off.
Missed sin: During Hellboy’s fight with the giants, when one of them brings its weapon down between HB and the camera, it blocks HB from view, and when it lifts the weapon back up, HB is inexplicably reversed. As in, the editing layer somehow got flipped horizontally. He’s facing the opposite direction, and the Right Hand of Doom has become the Left Hand of Doom.

That and the river and bridge are suddenly gone after the Giant attacks HB, replaced for a large field to have the CGI fight
I hate every moment of this film but the worst part is when he gets stabbed through the chest then stabbed another 5 times or something then electrocuted. Before finally being used as a football by three giants before passing out. He LIVES through all that seriously. Watching this movie felt like someone was peeling my eyes.
Hellboy is immortal, although the movie failed to properly convey that. He can only die when he is ready for it

@@roguishpaladin I don't know! It seemed pretty immutable! He dinged the Sin Counter, and it did this weird thing where it acknowledged the sin but didn't increase the counter.
The delivery of the joke doesn't count IMO because even CS himself said how good David Harbour is in the role of Hellboy. Such a great actor with such a crappy script! He's gotta make SOMETHING about the jokes stick
This movie is a trainwreck. I love David Harbour and he is a great actor, but they just can't do it like the originals with Ron Pearlman, Doug Jones, and Selma Blair.🤷♂️ I also think that the editing and animation is bad as well.
Nimue was a pretty cool person in King Arthur stories. She was Merlins friend and when she died she became the Lady of the Lake and guarded Excalibur.

The luchador/vampire thing was from the comics, but along with shoehorning waaaaaay too much from them into one movie, they also ignored the original story. I think this turd of a movie would really have benefitted from them NOT trying to jam so, so much in.
The best thing about this movie is that it reminded me to go watch “the sword in the stone” my favorite Disney movie.

It was actually quite emotional how they set up the separation between the magical and normal worlds. The Green Giant dying, as the last of its kind, was so sad.

The newest version is closer to the comics then the first version was.
I'd call this a reboot. A shitty one. But if Evil Dead and Ghostbusters can make a comeback after not so great remake/reboots, I can hope for Hellboi 3 from Guillermo and Perlman.

This movie was the epitome of wasted potential. Looks like it should be so cool but it so dumb and is bogged down with so much crap that it can’t even be escapist fun
I however liked the movie
"How powerful is hell boy?" He is immortal. At best you can simply make him a incorporeal where he can't hurt you, until someone summons him back to earth in baby form. The stories were never about Hellboy, they were usually about the reader, how to deal with loss, family , your own inadequacies. It's what makes him endearing, and we know he can't die, but he loses friends and loved ones. He will never grow old and die. And it is sad, so we follow him around on his adventures (as readers) and cheer for him and root for him. Not really a complex idea. James bond is immortal essentially, they never outright say it, but he is.
Cinemasins has a problem dealing with even the simplest ideas. It pandering at its worst.
@@chrisnotyou he does make some good points. I don't think he realized he made them, but he did. Like the fact that comic book arcs rarely make for good movies. It is very difficult to take a serial publication with over 100 volumes and then make it into one 90 minute movie and explain everything that's going on. Can you imagine the exposition dump that movie would be? It'll be more than half an hour of a person doing a powerpoint presentation of world building.
@Conn Benn I said he is immortal. He cannot die of natural causes. So he stops GROWING once his growth plates fuse, that's it, he isn't actually aging, just grows up and stops. His horns are special he can only augment their physical appearance. It is all explained in the comic books. And the first movie sort of touches up on that research they were doing on him.
Your question has been answered, you can look it up in the lore.
He actually dies at the end of volume 12. His story is not told in order so there could still be new stories. But his story has a very solid ending

Hell Boy is laterally immortal explained multiple times, and even if his body is completely destroyed, like I said, he will be reformed in hell again.
Immortal... except if the world ends, then he will die with it. Beast of the Apocalypse part. And MM has promised not to try and retcon the Bible verses he used the give Hellboy his immortality, and said if anyone does the books wouldn't be canon anymore.
I would just like to pause and take a moment to point out how awesome it is that the Sin Counter has finally reveled itself to be the true master in this relationship; I don't get why it waited so long. All glory to the Sin Counter!
I haven’t seen this movie and when that descendant of Arthur twist and Excalibur showed up my eyes rolled all the way to the back of my head.

Honestly, I liked this movie. I feel that David Harbor did a very good job playing Hellboy (though of course no one can outshine Ron Perlman). I really liked the characters Alice and Ben. Only thing that ruined it for me was that they couldn't pick a dang plot. Too many elements all smashed up together. Oh, and also sorta didn't like what they did to the professor's personality: Catholic pacifist to absent war monger >.

I honestly enjoyed it because it was a closer adaption of the comic story for Hellboy.
The origional movies while based on the characters was no where close to the source material, and honestly when a movie is based of a book series or comic book series or an anime/manga series I always enjoy them more when they stick closer to the source material, rather then just take the characters and put them in some random thing that would never have been part of the source material.

I watched it on Netlfix a few days ago, expecting it to be terrible. It wasn't. Not sure if I'm disappointed or, er, appointed.

This movie's two redeeming qualities are Mila Jovovich and Daniel Dae Kim.
Daniel Dae Kim: absolutely, he was fantastic. Milla Jovovich: are you bloody joking? I’ve seen better performances from children in primary school plays. She was godawful. She was quite possibly the worst thing about the film, and when the film you’re saying that about is Hellboy 2019, you know that’s not good.
Just for the record. I laughed at the capricorn line and I have no shame.

No lie: I actually really liked this movie. David Harbour was great, and the accuracy to the comics was actually pretty impressive. But I won't deny that it was still very flawed. I managed to have mindless fun while watching it, personally.

Agreed. Watched it for the first time this morning on Netflix, can't say it was AS bad as people make it out to be.
For all the ways this movie is accurate to the comics, it makes sure to include elements that are inaccurate. That, to me, was one of its major flaws. Ironically, the first Hellboy and it's emphasis on the Ogdru Jahad was truer to the comics than this movie and its obsession with Christian aspects.
Personally, it wasn't that horrible. Keeping in mind that hellboy has a lot crazy shit that happens. So not all of it (if any of it) translates well to the screen. I actually think a lot of the problems could be fixed with a sequel. Just a solid film that is for pointless entertainment.

I would have replaced the "his brain is to small a target" with "His skull is too thick"

People just would have taken it literally when they wanted it to play for a joke. Besides, saying someone has a thick skull means they're stubborn, hard-headed, not unintelligent.

I saw this movie and don't remember a thing about it except in MIlla and that prirate guy was in it.
saw this for free after a screening of They Shall Not Grow Old when I worked at a theater. No joke, I fell asleep a little before they find out where merlin is and woke up somewhere close to the end. Imagine my surprise when I learn that there were 40 minutes left at that point. This entire time I figured I dozed off for like 5 minutes, turns out I had a pretty substantial nap.
The title should be: Everything IS wrong with Hellboy.
