This is a pleasant surprise. I remember listening to your entire Hellraiser retrospective a few years ago during a slow day at work. Yall ended up getting me to watch the whole series, even if I should’ve stopped after 2, lol. Edit: Work ended up being slow today too so I watched this vid under the same circumstances. Total blast of nostalgia, absolutely brightened up my day. Honestly the only thing I disagree with is the male nudity take. IIRC the shot of Trevor in the shower is from Riley's perspective. We see how good Trevor looks, and how that drew Riley towards him. It's actually kind of interesting how the men are more sexualized than the women in this movie. I believe that it's in the movie for a reason, rather than it just being cheesecake. Similarly we see contrast between Riley's relationship and her brother's relationship. When the couples are naked and in bed Riley and Trevor are fucking fast, hard, and dirty. Matt and Colin on the other hand are more gentle , sensual, and intimate with each other. When we see them in bed they aren't fucking, but they're having a serious conversation about Riley's current state. The goal is juxtaposition, at least that's how I see it. Riley seeks pleasure via Trevor (who is also her drug dealer, iirc), Matt and Colin on the other hand simply love each other. This is also why Riley stops fucking Trevor at the beginning when he says "I love you". She's not looking for that, she's looking for something else.
The Cenobites in this reboot are way more faithful to the original novella. There was no leather in the book. You can tell this director really respected Barker's vision.
The last scene felt to me like the movie's intention was to leave the question of the Cenobites' philosophy open ended. Like, does suffering like Voight went through allow to him transcend to something greater? Or better? It potentially builds on that "one note" music metaphor. I loved it for potential worldbuilding, regardless of whether or not they do anything with it. I agree with Ryan though, a dark fantasy could be great.
This was the best movie since the first 2 original. Was REALLY good, the human characters have layers loved the lead girl, the boyfriend the brother all so good and believable. The configuration having multiple steps and the parallels with addiction worked sooo good. Loved it. I don’t believe this movie has anything to do with Gary tuniclife or the old dimension films crew and that’s was so much for the better. Clive barker wrote a great reimagining of this and the cast was amazing
Clive Barker haaaaates the name Pinhead. He wrote a whole book (The Scarlet Gospels) to show that The Hellpriest (Pinhead) hates it as well lmfao He gets pissed off at anyone who calls him that.
