  • The Rolex Daytona is that one watch you’re probably the most sick of hearing about, but even so, its popularity is not unjustified. It is the quintessential sports chronograph, rising from the ashes to become one of the most sought-after watches of all time. It seems nothing can take the fight to Rolex and the Daytona from Omega, Breitling or any other competitor-but what about a watch costing a third of the price from its own junior brand, Tudor? This is: Tudor BEATS Rolex with Best Watch of 2021.

    Being a watch person comes down to your heart. Once you love a watch, these comparisons means nothing in the long run. If you buy the alternative, eventually you’ll want the one you originally wanted. Having said that, Rolex never captured my heart. I own a Tudor and am very happy with it. I also own a Panerai cuz of how it captured my heart. Sure, we study the details and appreciate those, but the heart is what it boils down to

    To set the record straight, as someone who was involved in “wristwatch” collecting (you had to mention that back then because the majority of watch collectors collected pocket watches), the Zenith Daytona had a waiting list from the moment it was introduced. Premiums were considered absolutely a crazy thing, but they started almost from the beginning of the 16520 launch. The older 4 digit Daytonas were considered old fashioned and it wasn’t really until around 1996/97 that they started selling for more than the Zenith Daytonas. My grail back then was the white dialed Daytona. While I don’t have my earlier Daytonas any longer, my 116500LN Panda is hardly ever off my wrist.

    I am glad Tudor came back to the American market. I recently (within 10 years) started to get into watches and fell into the trap of the big 4 "mainstream" US brands (Breitling, Rolex, Omega and Tag) I remember seeing the Tudor bb58 in 2016? and was in love. I like the direction the brand is going as of late and cannot wait to see what else they conjure up.

    The date complication tipped me to buying the Tudor chrono. It’s something I use every day, and I miss it every time I wear my BB58 so it was so easy to make the choice on this one. So happy that this video was made. I'm in exactly the same situation as Andrew. I bought a BB58 SS gilt and black dial last year. At the same time, I also put my name down on AD list for the BB Chrono Panda Dial, resigned to knowing I'll never afford a Daytona. However I have a small niggling reservation. If/when I get the call, I wonder if I'll unbox the watch and think it's too thick/top heavy. Remaining proportions seem managable but the thickness.. esp compared to the normal BB58 worries me. I have a 6.5" wrist. I also need decide if I sell my BB58 and put the cash towards the Chrono or, do I have a need for both.... too many decisions. Loved the video. Keep up the amazing work. The open mic sessions with Tom are so refreshing!! 👌

  • @daviseverywhere
    @daviseverywhere 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    IMO
    1. I feel that the Tudor Chronograph is much more a "Mens" watch compared to the Daytona which fits small-mid wrist.
    2. The price tag of the Daytona does not make sense at all (even if you can get itat retail)
    3. The 2 sub dials is so much nicer compared to the 3 sub dials of the Daytona.
    4. The Daytona will definitely always look newer in years to come compared to the Tudor Chronograph due to the ceramic bezel (but if you like patina, that's a different story)

    • @sylinmino
      @sylinmino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Wholly disagree on Point 2 if you're talking retail. Can you even name a single other chronograph in that price range or below that even comes close to the Daytona?
      - The Speedy Moonwatch is not ceramic, no precious metal in the SS version, not as accurate, smaller power reserve, shorter service interval, way worse bracelet, and it's thicker and bigger.
      - Seamaster Chronos are all ridiculously big it's insane.
      - The Zenith CMS has worse service interval, worse bracelet, worse PR, is thicker and bigger, and doesn't have screwdown pushers for WR.
      - The Grand Seiko sports chronos are all ridiculously enormous and super thick and have worse bracelets
      - Breitling Navitimer is not nearly as nice in the finishing or specs.
      - And then even looking above its price, the AP Chronos don't even match the Daytona's sports specs.
      Current market value for the Daytona is stupid, but do not sleep on retail value of it because it's still unmatched.

I wore it for a few months when my Explorer II was at the watchmaker due to a seal failing and water getting into it, and I didn’t realize how much I relied on my watch for the date complication. I can’t tell you how many times I looked at my wrist while wearing the Daytona only to get more and more upset with the date not being there like on my Explorer. The Rainbow Daytona has always been my grail watch, but after spending more time with the Daytona on my wrist I am rethinking that. This Tudor might be a good choice as a Daytona replacement.

I wish it was 40mm wide by 13mm thick, but I hope to soon find out how it wears since I'm currently waiting for my panda and obviously the AD did not have one for me to try on before I ordered it. I do agree with you that the previous generation of rolexes (5 digit) are better than the 6 digit references, I have owned 2 subs, and the combination of ceramic bezels and beefier cases on the new ones turns me off. Perhaps there is a touch of deja vu in this presentation -when I purchased my Tudor Submariner 76100 in the early '80's I remember looking at the Tudor 9420 (oyster case, date complication, automatic winding) and the Rolex Daytona ( manual wind watch with no date complication). The Tudor used a variation of the Valjoux 7750 while the Daytona used a Rolex modified Valjoux 727 (and adjusted to 3 positions?) . I recall the salesperson wondering out loud why the Rolex demanded such a premium (must have let his guard down as we were "talking watches" :^) ). The Tudor was rated pressure proof to 50M while the Daytona had been upgraded a few years prior (circa 1980) to 100m (from 50m I recall). As these were "drivers" or industrial engineer's watches the pressure rating seemed perfectly adequate.... The automatic movement Daytona arrived in the late '80s still without the date complication

    I am a lucky owner of a Tudor BB Chrono panda. I will say, there are so many people out there who will never actually USE their expensive timepieces. Sure, they wear it for show, and there's nothing wrong with that...to each their own. I, on the other hand, am constantly checking the time, using the chrono, etc. It's part of what I do during the day for work and in my free time/hobbies.(I don't typically use my phone for that like many others might.) However, after wearing my BB Chrono for long periods of time, I've realized I could never own a Daytona. The date function puts the BB Chrono leaps ahead of a Daytona IMO. I'm reminded how essential the date function is, when I swap to a different watch in my rotation that doesn't have a date window. Not to say that watches without are worse or better. But, when it comes to the BB Chrono vs Daytona and all factors considered, I'd have to agree that the BB Chrono easily takes the cake on this one.

    The BB Chrono has a date...just saying.
    I have this chrono and it is a magnificent watch. It does have a few flaws...the snowflake does cover the chrono dial...and you need to unscrew the pushers before you use the chrono...so the later solved the former for me...I just don't use the chrono very often.
    The lack of a ceramic bezel...well, only because I don't want to scratch it.
    The highly polished sides make it a scratch magnet...notice WF didn't show the sides!
    The lack of a quick adjust bracelet.
    The nearly impossible access from AD's, as this has been sold out immediately and has been so for well over a year and sells for about $2 above list.
    Other than these few issues, the watch is nearly perfect. The distortion on the dial from the crystal is magnificent! The shallow dial shows off the hands much better...the timelesswatch channel does a wonderful job of showing this off. The dial luster is captivating in all light, but when sun hits the dial...wow..like fireworks!!! It wears awesome and is a joy to take a random glance at throughout the day.
