Rolex fever seems to have come in at a close second for this generation’s largest pandemic, replete with its own political divide and even conspiracy. So if you’ve had it up to here with Rolex dealers telling you what to do, then you’re in luck, because you’re about to find out five reasons why you should probably get a Grand Seiko instead.

    As first a Rolex owner and then a five Grand Seiko owner, Rolex is of no further interest to me. I keep one Rolex for sentimental reasons as it was my first good watch but I will never darken the door of a Rolex boutique again. The build quality, finishing and movement engineering/performance of Grand Seiko cannot be equaled.

    There was a time when I too was obsessed with Rolex, and then after being told constantly that they were unavailable - I found myself browsing Jaeger LeCoultre, Grand Seiko, and A. Lange & Söhne. I came to the realisation, I wanted a Rolex because of the label - but when inspecting them closely, having held one, I realised - there was no connection. A Rolex didn't invoke any sort of feeling, it felt overpriced and lacking in inherent value. Where as holding a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso and Grand Seiko SPGY007 - I felt like I was getting more than what I was paying for. Gorgeous watches, and truly breath taking. I find myself staring at my watch and forgetting the time (counter productive).

    Rolex prioritizes marketing, Grand Seiko prioritizes quality and finishing. Which is why watch enthusiasts are migrating to GS while others are "waiting on the call" from an AD while watches are going to flippers to the secondary market and high profile clients for prestige. It's a game I'm not going to play.

All in vain. These types of show offs are the type that buy a rolex. Let them stay over there.

  • @interflo91
    @interflo91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    The dials they produce are simply top notch and spring drive is an awesome innovation in watchmaking.
    Also I don’t get why a lot of people say it’s not a mechanical watch. The only thing not mechanical is the regulator of the movement. They just hear that a quartz crystal is involved and they think it’s a quartz movement.
    I guess you could call it a hybrid but that doesn’t describe it perfectly either.
    For me a mechanical watch is a watch that entirely runs on mechanical energy. And spring drive does exactly that.
    Converting mechanical energy into a minuscule amount of electric energy electromagnetically regulate the mechanical system is a stroke of genius and doesn’t take anything away from the beauty and fascination of mechanical movements.

    • @Turboy65
      @Turboy65 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a quartz regulated servo regulated movement using mechanical power to drive its own electrical generator that operates the servo loop.
      I say it's much closer to a mechanical movement than it is to a battery operated quartz movement.

    This was a spectacular presentation. GS is the first watch I have longed for that wasn’t influenced by any athlete, media, sport or marketing campaign.. or even amongst friends. The watches simply speak for themselves. I think that when you wear a Rolex or AP, Patel or an Omega…people take notice as they recognize the prestige and the brand. But when you wear a GS, even the most ardent of watch enthusiasts or critics will take notice and say “hey, nice watch”.

      Yes, I hate the current market as well and refuse to buy anything from them. The idea that you have to befriend AD or buy something else before you can be put on a waitlist to get the watch you want is just disgusting. I have better things to do with my time/money. I can't blame them though, it's in their best interest not to increase production to meet temporary demand.
      Having said that, this doesn't take away from the fact that their watches are excellent for what they are. You're not going to get hand-finishing or high complications from Rolex, it's not what the brand is about. But if you're looking for a robust, reliable, and versatile watch that you can wear pretty much anywhere, then in my opinion, Rolex is second to none.

    I have owned Rolex watches all of my life (62yrs old) and I will be the first in line to say that Rolex is not the best quality and there QC is very lacking. The flaws and errors that reach the customer are totally unbelievable and I dare say that you could make a full video on that very point. When it comes to Grand Seiko I will defy anyone to find a flaw or something that Quality Control has missed and that is the difference in the two brands, plus GS is far more adventurous and exacting with they're movements and that doesn't even mention the dials. I would recommend anyone who is looking to purchase a higher end watch that before they do what 90% 9f first time buyers do ( Tudor/Rolex) have a look at GS if you want to see a Patek/Vacheron or AP standard of watchmaking because all you will buy from the Rolex brands is a very good workhorse everyday watch that is not reflected in the price that Rolex are asking now.

    • @Visitor555

    • @ralex3531
      @ralex3531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive owned two Grand Seikos, one I kept and the other I had to return for what seems like QC issues. There were scratches all over the dial and the case. The damage on the outside may have an easy explanation, but the dial was a completely different story. The bracelet also felt quite cheap even compared to the GS quartz I still own, which is without any imperfections even under a loupe.

    • @rava2107
      @rava2107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ralex3531 I will agree that the bracelet on all of the GS is not as good as it could be but it's only in the last 7-10 years that Rolex have got their act together in respect of their bracelet. I still remember the days of bracelet stretch and the pressed clasp and when I say that they were bad I'm understating how bad they were. The head of the watch was always well made but Rolex possibly had the worst bracelet of any mid to high level watch brand. I still firmly believe that it would not have improved if not for Omega, in the 90's Omega started to make solid links and end links on their bracelets and Rolex always compared themselves to Omega. When Omega started to use a milled clasp was when Rolex knew that they had to improve their bracelets and funnily enough that was when they started to radically increase in price. I believe up until the point that Rolex had to increase quality of the bracelets the watches were made to a price and not to the best quality of all parts of the watch. I say this as a long time owner and buyer of Rolex watches, I still have the first one I got ,well technically I don't have it I gave it to my grandson so it's still in the family but that watch has had 3 bracelets in 49 years and I still have all the bracelets and genuinely they didn't improve until my grandson had it serviced 2 years ago and got the bracelet replaced.

    Seiko has some of the most beautiful dials. If my Seiko Premiere had a sweep seconds hand instead of a dead-beat, I would wear it more often. Also, I just purchased the Bulova Precisionist. It spots a continuous sweep second hand and an advertised 10 seconds per year accuracy. I would love to hear your take on this watch.

    • @taylantorin
      @taylantorin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny that we have same watches! I've had my Bulova Precisionist brand new 10 years ago. It's accuracy was very good at that time. But 10 years in, and it is now at +129 seconds in 8 months, way worse than my Seiko Premier and Citizen EcoDrive (which is 6 years old and at +35 in 8 months).
      Grand Seiko's 9F caliber is a totally different story though. I have a special one adjusted to +/-5sec per year. It has been so accurate through this same 8 months testing period that at some point it started to seem to me that I am checking the accuracy of the reference time :)

    • @coffeeisgood102
      @coffeeisgood102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@taylantorin Very interesting that the Bulova lost accuracy after a certain time period. That watch is 16 jewels and is made of gears and pinions just like it’s spring wound cousins. The accuracy of spring wound watches will suffer as time goes on due to thickening oil and dirt. The same should be true for these watches as well. You might take it in to someone qualified to work on Pricisionist watches and have the movement cleaned, just like in a normal watch. I’m thinking that will solve your issue. Let me know how it goes.

      @PizzaPie well it must be radio controlled then, which means you will get +/-0 seconds a year ONLY when in a country that has the radio signals for the watch, else the quartz watch is rated at "Accuracy : Accuracy: ±15 seconds per month"
