    I have an HP envy 17". It's been working great for me! I do graphics and basic video and it takes the beating without giving up. It's my backpack laptop.
    Any big projects that require more juice I just use my built desktop, plus I can do design & play games to remove the stress 😂

    Thanks for this video. I end up doing a lot of weird graphic design tasks for my wife’s company… largely because they are small and have no in-house person. [Read: She and her business partner are too cheap to pay someone on a contract basis, and I am doing them free favors at the very last minute - especially when my wife gives me that look and says “can you fix it so it looks ok… pllleeease?” ] Unfortunately for the appearance of their reports, documents and other odds and ends, I am a physician by training. I mean, I guess I like graphic design but I am a rank amateur. I know there are kids in high school who could do it far better and far, far faster. I had no idea how to start looking at a laptop to consider what I might want for that kind of task. This was a great intro because you discussed basic concepts well and how they translate into pros and cons of possible choices. Truly appreciate the education!

  • @spareroomtech

    The issue is Macs have soldered SSDs which are unrepairable. If ANY component on the logic board fails, your data is likely toast. Consider also that an SSD is a wearable part that can fail. I've had it happen, and I've had customers with failed SSDs. Most Windows laptops have replaceable and upgradable storage.
    Secondly, an IPS display is not necessarily a good display. There are some excellent, color-accurate displays out there - and there are many sub-par screens as well. ALWAYS check out what color gamut the screen supports before buying a laptop. 100% sRGB is fine for a majority of people, but if your workflow depends on having the most accurate colors possible, a machine that covers the majority if not all of the Adobe and P3 color gamut is a huge must. That is one thing that I will say Apple has done well with.
    As a professional, though, I cannot recommend any machine with a soldered SSD.
    The Dell XPS line is a great option. Those machines have socketed storage (not soldered) and have options for excellent, highly color accurate displays and excellent CPU and GPU offerings.

    Out of all of these, what would you say is the best for animators and multitaskers? I like a lot of these but want one that uses W10Pro.
    Thanks for making such a comprehensive video on why all of these are good choices. I've been looking to replace mine but not sure where to start.

    • @spareroomtech
      @spareroomtech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That depends on what software you'll be using. If you'll be using Blender, etc, I would recommend a Windows machine with a strong dedicated GPU. Avoid integrated graphics as those just won't cut it for serious rendering.
      If you don't need to move around, a desktop PC is an excellent option - especially if you intend to let it sit and render for long periods at a time. If you do need to move around, something like a ThinkPad P-series or XPS 17 would be good options. Another possibility - as strange as it sounds - would be a gaming laptop with a good quality screen. These tend to be built for high-demand workflows (gaming, for example) that will tax the CPU and GPU for long periods. If you do go that route, though, make sure to check out the screen first. Don't get one with a sub-par, low color gamut, 1080p screen. For graphics work, you'd probably find that disappointing at best and detrimental to your work at worst. I would go with at least a 1440p or higher resolution and make sure it covers at least 100% of the sRGB color gamut. Good coverage of the P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces is preferred.

    As a person who can finally afford to get rid of this Macbook pro yup Apple is my sworn enemy. In Apple's defense this is an old model but sis can't take it no more. Macbooks are really beautiful and aesthetically pleasing both externally and internally and sturdy as a beast but they overheat and lag waaayyy too quickly. I'd also wanna be able to game on my laptop and the options for mac are just way too limited. I've been a mac user for 7 years but I think it's time to switch back to windows (oh god I need to relearn how to use windows). I'm thinking of getting an asus or acer but can't decide yet. asus was the #1 contender before you showed me that beauty of an acer concept and now it's back to square 1.

    hey there, love your video and explonation. Now, I want to edit video, photo and create art to help the poor in Guatemala and raise awareness. I have been thinking to buy the acer that you mentioned, mainly because I can draw on it. But do you think it works with editing 4k videos? of course I know the macbook would be better, but it is also 4 times more expensive. And also, for music editing, do you think this one would work? I have been working with a 8bg laptop, but it freezes constantly and well, it sucks to work with when it comes to 4k video editing. cheers

    you mentioned core i5 and nvidia graphics but the hp envy i'm looking at has AMD Ryzen 3 and AMD Radeon for graphics. is that equivalent to intel i5 and nvidia? i'm not very good at these things.
    AMD Ryzen™ 3 4300U (2.7 GHz base clock(2h), up to 3.7 GHz max boost clock(2i), 4 MB L3 cache, 4 cores)
    AMD Radeon™ Graphics

    • @pelleyy_5900
      @pelleyy_5900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is not enough for graphism! ryzen 3 is the equivalent to a intel i3, which is not good for graphism. Like he said, got for a i7 or ryzen 7. As for the radeon graphics, its dedicated which is the opposite of the nvidias graphics card, I would say that jt reslly isnt enough for graphism. Go for minimum a i7 10th gen or Ryzen 7 4th gen with a nvidia 1650 minimum!

    Hi, I'm looking for an uncompromising notebook, that is, I don't have to use it to play, but to work, and do everything; without a specific job. I would like these minimum features 16 Gb Ram, AMD 7 or amd9 processor, dedicated graphics card of at least 4GB, battery that lasts a long time and not noisy. What could you advise me? Understated design. Would a Gaming notebook be good for normal use and, if necessary, also for editing and playing? For normal business use ??
    I come from 1 old pc that lasted me 11 years hp dv6 i3 (crap) and my idea is to buy a bomb that can last me another 10 years, with which I must have no limits of use and performance.
    I am looking for a laptop with a super look like an Asus rog G14, something like that, could you help me? Kudos to the channel and advice ❣️
    I also rate Dell and other brands ...
