      I did the same last year. The TFT on the BMW has to be one of best out there, but I deliberately went for the analogue instruments because I really do not like a digital speedometer, when I look at it a see 62 mph or whatever that is not as instantly informative to me as seeing where a needle is on a dial. The Rallye is a great version of the GS, I agree with the reviewer about the better airflow than the Adventure version if you ride a lot in hot conditions. I have the sport suspension on mine, I don't think I need the 20mm extra height but the higher spring rate is much better if you ride 2 up with luggage.

      @@fiveowaf454 That's what I always thought, but the analog version is really really small, You have to guess the numbers more, than You can read them. The Navigator covers the top part of the speedometer. The digital speedometer is very good and steady, the numbers do not jitter or wobble and are very big and easy to read not like the first digital speedometers in cars.
      The TFT is the better speedometer. Try to get a test ride on both of them and You'll see.

    • @fiveowaf454

      @@norbertscheibner8334 I repeatedly hear people saying they can't see the numbers on the speedometer, but that makes me wonder about their eyesight :) The numbers are much clearer than on my R1100r, I don't find it an issue, but then I have exceptionally good eyesight even though I'm over 60, for which I count myself lucky. My biggest dislike with digital speedometers is when you are trying to stick to a speed limit, or being followed by a police car, you can't tell when you are slowing down and speeding up easily as you can with a needle on a dial. I own many vehicles and recently bought a brand new SUV, again I avoided getting one where a digital speedo was compulsory. On some vehicles now they have what looks like an analogue speedometer but that is a digital image, those are really good too, I just don't find looking at an isolated number on a screen is helpful when riding or driving, a number in the context of a dial is just better for me personally, although I accept much of that is down to conditinog over so many years..

    just bought one of these with the "sport suspension" (extra 20mm of travel). Brilliant bike, TFT is gorgeous, and an even more composed ride than my '16 GS which was a huge upgrade over my '08 GS. The '18 bikes can be had for great deals right now since the 1250 is coming out. Have had Triumph and KTM, still have a Multistrada in the garage. Very different bikes, but if I could only have one bike it would be the GS. It is that good, but YMMV.

    I had a Ducati Diavel which I rode to Thailand from Singapore. Got back traded it for the Gs.
    Initially I hated it, but the more I rode it the better it got.
    Super nimble, light , will only get heavy if you drop it so don’t 😂.
    Power delivery can’t touch the Diavel but in reality, it’s very safe & reassuring.
    It’s $47 000 here , 2nd hand 7months old . Brand new almost 60k. Though it’s expensive but I’ll keep it knowing that it will last for 20 years.
    Don’t be fooled by the size, rent it & ride it for a month, you’ll understand it better.
    The Triump May be more smoother but the Gs will be easier to maintain in the Long run.

    If you are riding in the "Min" suspension mode as opposed to "Auto" then you are on minimum spring load and it's not being adjusted for your weight or to level the machine. If you want handling at speed you need to be in Dynamic mode for the engine and Dynamic Auto suspension mode. I have to say despite that, that the suspension is so good that the "Min" mode is still extraordinary compared to most motorcycles.

    After looking at the Yamaha Tenere, Suzuki V-Strom, Triumph, Ducati, KTM.. I really didn't want to have to "settle" on the BMW GSA. They are expensive, and based on an old design. Not the highest horsepower, or the fastest, or the best in dirt, or even the cheapest to maintain. But, after weeks of crunching pros and cons, prices and stats, rider reviews, resale value and aftermarket availability- I found myself at a BMW dealer today and signed up for a new 2018 GSA with the hard baggage included. They cut me a great deal, as the 2019 1250's are going for 5 grand more than the deal I got. Still expensive, but I am 60 and I want to keep this till I can't. I think the Tenere and the V-Strom are good bikes, but the Ducati Multistrata Enduro and the KTM are a bit too wild for me, and I hear they'll cook your balls with serious heat issues. Maybe. Maybe not. I didn't want to risk that. So, the trusted Beemer is going to have 20 years to prove itself the right decision, come hell or high water.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went through a similar process myself, what tipped it for me was when I found my Rallye with every factory extra and package for $6k less than I could get the same bike, minus some extras, from my local dealer. That closed a lot of the price gap to any competition and made it a no brainer. I'm a similar age to yourself and also plan to ride it until I can't do so. My previous BMW, which I still have is now 20 years old and still runs and looks like new, my new GS builds on everything I've always loved about that bike and then just does it all a bit better. While the BMW doesn't have the biggest power figures, I still find it feels more powerful in normal riding than many of those that are more powerful on paper, that's because for long distance rides I don't want to have to rev the engine to find power, I enjoy the torque lower down and besides what ever you buy there's always something quicker, but there's no way a GS can be considered slow or lacking in power. I haven't ridden the 1260 Multistrada, but when they had me ride a new 1200 a couple of years back that felt really flat on the bottom end compared to even my old BMW with it's reprogrammed motronic chip. I was left unimpressed by the feel of the Multistrada and being 6' 4" it was cramped for my legs. The bottom line is the GS is a great overall package and remains so through gradual evolution over the years.

    I have this bike I tried the KTM beforehand and felt this was a better bike.
    But it has had issues with 7k on the clock the clutch went and started doing some weird shit between 5-6k revs.
    Bmw has it in for a service and corrected it not sure what they did.
    I also tried the xr and this feels faster and certainly more agile.
    I have taken this bike to Brands hatch and have smoke sports bike riders even when it wasn’t working correctly.
    The negative for me is the bike is so damn heavy which can be annoying but once moving it’s fine.
    For me I’m almost thinking about a k1300s.
    The rally I have taken off rod and is very capable but at £17.5k its a lot of it goes wrong.
    So many electronics on here so your gonna need warranty other than than it is a great bike but I wish it was lighter!
    Before this I had a z1000sx which was just a bit boring after a while I also had a 2016 rr which was phenomenal until someone pulled out on me .
    Currently I’m waiting for the 2019 rr but i would really just like one bike but it needs to be practical.
    So either the super duke gt or an old k1300s need to test ride em.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I wouldn't argue 500lbs + is heavy, it's not really heavy for a 1200cc motorcycle that can do everything including being a sports tourer. The low center of gravity from the Boxer engine also makes a huge difference to where the weight is located and the feel. The height IMO makes the weight seem more intimidating, I have a road orientated BMW which weighs about the same but seems lighter when getting out of the garage etc. because it's much lower, and psychologically it's less intimidating. With time and familiarity I've found my GS feels much lower and more manageable than it did when I first got it. In comparison to most big cruiser bikes and big sports tourers that are 700-900lbs the GS is light and once on the open road it reminds me of riding a large and very smooth Enduro/Trail bike, it feels so light and maneuverable with those wide bars and it's general feel.

      @rikheyligen2368 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps this bike is a bit too powerful for a first time rider. I suggest going for a smaller bike before you ride 1000+ cc motorcycles.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From someone who's been riding for 43 years, start out with a small engined bike and learn everything you can before going to a larger machine in stages. Even if you think you can handle a large bike right of the bat, you learn much more riding smaller bikes that make you much safer on a powerful bike. Going slowly and carefully on a big motorcycle doesn't teach the basics IMO, then on a day when you make a mistake and go too fast into a corner that was tighter than you thought, you will go off the road and get hurt. TH-cam is full of videos of what happens to those who think they can jump straight to a fast and powerful motorcycle, skipping the basics.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LC engine is mechanically quite noisey, although mine seems to be quietening down with a few more miles on it. My initial impression was my older BMW that I still have sounded better and was smoother. However the other day I rode them back to back, had them both parked in the road and did 12 miles on the old one, then jumped right on the new one and rode the same route. That put to bed any notion I had about new vs old. The LC engine is much smoother, accelerates much quicker and you notice the lighter crank and flywheel eliminating the "twist" effect when revving the engine at standstill. With earplugs you don't notice the mechanical noises which do not sound as pleasant as my older engine, but I think a lot of that noise is due to the skid plate and the way the sound comes up through the bodywork on the GS and the windshield position also is a significant factor, my older bike is the naked R model. As I said mine is sounding better with a few thousand on so I think there is some bedding in of components involved. The noise was the only thing I wasn't impressed with when I first got it, I'm glad that's improving. I'd like to get a Remus exhaust too at some stage, that really made my other BMW sound much more satisfying to ride with it's deep tone under acceleration and by just being a bit louder.
