  • BMW’s R 1200 GS has been one of the brand’s most successful models, ever. It advanced the popularity of the modern large-bore adventure motorcycle segment and helped develop a devout following throughout the world. For the 2019 BMW R 1250 GS, the Bavarians returned the favor by making this marquee mount even better in hopes of stomping the competition in this always red-hot class.
    --
The new 2019 R1250GS is made to go anywhere and everywhere that your mind and heart could ever envision taking a motorcycle. The flat-twin boxer engine is scaled up to 1,254cc (up from 1,170cc) and produces nearly 117 hp (7,500 rpm) and upwards of 92 pound-feet of torque (6,240 revs) at the business end of the OE-fitted Michelin Anakee 3 rear tire. But the peak numbers aren't the real star of the new mill. BMW's proprietary ShiftCam system is what really shines.
The ShiftCam modulates valve lift during acceleration. When the throttle is partially opened the first camshaft facilitates added engine torque along with improved combustion efficiency. However wring the throttle open, and the alternative set of cam lobes allow for extra lift, providing full access to the R1250’s might.
The system works so well you don’t even notice it. It’s smooth in its actuation between the low- and high-speed cam so that you would never even know it’s equipped with this clever hardware. Just when you thought BMW’s boxer engine couldn’t get any silkier, it does.
Thumb the starter button and the engine has a pleasing tone, even at idle. It sounds meaner than we remember. Throw some revs and you’re greeted by an even more guttural combined engine and exhaust note that makes this Beemer more exhilarating to play with.
On the road it goes exactly where you want it-an impressive feat considering its 574 pound fully fueled curb weight. In spite of its generous proportions, you get acclimated quickly to its size, mostly in part to a favorable balance and weight distribution-a good thing considering we spent 90 percent of our ride off highway.
The power delivery and overall engine dynamic lends itself well whether riding on asphalt or dirt. The traction control and the Enduro mode setting perform well especially when the going gets tough. Unlike previous GS models, in which it was advisable to manually disable the traction control when negotiating the rough stuff, now the electronics include logic that allows for a moderate degree of wheelspin, so you can break traction. However the electronics limit roosting power so that the bike won’t get away from you. This setting worked well in a majority of the terrain we encountered. And of course for true quagmires, you can easily manually disable TC with a push of a button.
The OE-fitted Michelin Anakee 3 tires dug into freshly moistened dirt well. However, in the real deep stuff, you're going to want the sharper edge of a deeper knob. For most of the stuff we encountered off road, the tires were up to the challenge.
Conversely, on pavement, the French rubber sticks well against pavement, even in the rain. Again, the ABS and traction control are calibrated well, so you can ride the bike harder than you’d think over wet surfaces. Overall, it’s a very well-calculated electronics package, regardless of which of the four modes you choose.
The chassis and ergonomics further complement an impressive powertrain. Not only is it an easy motorcycle to control in virtually any conditions, aside from slippery mud. Its level of comfort is at a very high level-making it a clear choice for those who require a fast, do-it-all motorcycle. Whether you're riding in the stand-up position or sitting down on the freeway, the R1250GS will continue to be a fine choice for ADV riders who plan on actually exploring the true capabilities of their machine.
And the standard equipment is a smorgasbord of creature comforts: cruise control, heated grips, adjustable windshield, centerstand, skid plate, adjustable seat height, LED lighting throughout, power sockets, removable passenger footpegs, the works. This thing is ready for serious adventure right off the floor, even if you don’t opt for optional equipment upgrades.
If you’re an ADV rider seeking a precision-made motorcycle that has loads of engine character and performance, not to mention a chassis that goes exactly where you want it with good balance and ergonomics that are honed to near perfection, this BMW is going to do it for you.

I'm not talking up a gravel driveway, I'm talking days deep in the wilderness. Every one I see on the road looks like it just rolled out of the showroom with not even a scratch on their aluminum boxes.

The ergonomics, luggage capacity, performance, flexibility and technology of most large displacement ADV bikes typically lend themselves well to long range sport touring enthusiasts. While these riders have no intention to take these large ADV bikes off road for any significant mileage, they do often plan sea to sea trips mostly via slab. I have a Tenere ES and I can ride for hours in comfort, easily bring everything I need with me, and won’t hesitate to jump on a few fire trails along the way.

    • @blipco5
      @blipco5 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Stephen Romano ...I had a zzr1200 Kawasaki sport tourer. A real mile muncher with swoopy bodywork that gives good wind protection at speed. It was fairly light and comfortable for the class. An eight or nine hundred mile day was not an issue. But it was still heavy though stable on the superslab. If I'm going off road I want something light that is easy to maneuver and pick up when it goes down.

people , this is a 260KG plus bike. (a quarter of a ton) It's a superb road bike and will do a dirt track but frankly so will a ZZR1100 with the right tires.. If you want proper off road, take off 100Kg and buy elsewhere, there's loads of choice. I own a GS12 and took it off road , come to the first steep gravel hill and you wont get up it unless you take a run up.

Off-road is commonly referred to as riding or driving on non-paved roads. No wheeled vehicle is capable of traveling on true "off-road" terrain. Get a horse or simply walk if you want to travel to places where there are no roads.

I always wonder about fuel for these kind of bikes. Do they take bad fuel as a lot of remote areas in the world offer. Because if they only take premium RON95 fuel then they are no good for the wild.

Carrizo Plain National Monument, northern southern California (our southwestern central). ADV and dual-sport heaven. Except in summer, then it's hell.
At the 4:00, he's looking down on the San Andreas fault. Two dirt roads run north south along the plain: Soda Lake Road, most traveled and partly paved with graded dirt/gravel mix; and Elkhorn Road, mostly two-track with some switchbacks. Some nice side roads like Hurricane and Paradise. Good camping at Selby and KCL. Dispersed camping allowed as well. The pavement riding in the area is pretty good : Highways 58, 33, 166, Hudson Ranch Road, Bitterwater Road.

The 2019 1250GS trans in my bike is as good as the 2017 and maybe a tad better. No issues at all. Though the quick-shift is still not very refined though better than the 2017. drumsnbass They don’t they’re Annakee Adventures or Bridgestone A41s, both great tyres for road use, ok for dry trails...

I own the same year and color bike, the bike is not a "go anywhere and everywhere" bike, unless you have other riders with you or better yet, s support vehicle. The bike when fully loaded with almost 8 gallons of fuel, panniers and camping gear can top 1,000 pounds, and to believe you can go anywhere alone like that, is not realistic. I have done 600 miles per day ride on this bike without getting tired, but try to do 60 miles on a typical BDR, and you would think twice about doing it again... ALONE!

A "go anywhere and everywhere" bike it is not. But close. It's physically impossible for a bike of this size & weight.
Maybe if it was a press bike that i did not have to repair, it would 'go anywhere and everywhere' my 2020 1250GS bike does not.

F850GS and GSA. Though not that much lighter than the 1250, the consensus in the ADV community is that it might be a more suitable bike for off-pavement riding.

Sam Toshner I feel really bloated as I sail past sports bikes 40kg lighter, can’t afford one, don’t knock them...I’ve had three in a row and I’ve had most of the rivals..brilliant bike.

@@IanTed never said anything about money lol - funny how defensive GS owners are about the price. I'm sure your GS is great on the road. I've ridden one in the dirt before and it would not be my go to ADV bike.

I do not understand the lure of these 550 lb behemoths for use off-road where mass is the enemy of all things good about motorcycling. Worse, these are vastly sophisticated machines which demand first world dealer service in case of any glitch. Woo hoo. Who is for up an adventure riding from Paris to Monte Carlo?
As to this new guy, he could at least get a shave and a haircut and TRY to look like a human.

Bulky, heavy, riding position too upright... naaah, I’m definitely not into ADV bikes. I’ve ridden the 1200GS of a friend, not my piece of cake. I don’t ride offroad or dirt roads, I’m more a naked or sport/touring bike, but if I ever will this is anyway not the bike for me, the new Tenere 700 will be more nimble and more fun. Not to mention if you drop it in a ditch it’s a third of the price of this bmw...
