    The assembly machines are more complex and interesting than the engine's themselves.

    Thanks for sharing how my R1200R engine was made. It's a work of mechanical artistry. I used to make gear boxes literally by hand for GMH back in 1979. We would fit the counter gears and washers by hand. Syncros worked by hand until slid reasonably.! Lol

    BMW have been making boxer engines for 97 years now. They are wonderful engines and you can tell when you ride one that they have been continuously making small improvements all through that time. I rode a boxer nearly 20 years ago and just got another one. The improvement during that time is really noticeable yet they have still kept the character that I liked about that bike. Really fascinating to see how those engineering improvements translate to the process. The new bike I have got is 1 generation newer than this one (ie the new 1250 shiftcam boxer).

Thanks BMW, well done!

    • @magnusengelmark
      @magnusengelmark 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      fashionskiller Yes it is standard.
      The reverse gear in cars at least used to be straight cut, hence the noise from the gearbox when reversing :) cheaper and meets the requirements.

    • @mikem302

      Straight gears are stronger.. helical are smoother

    • @Polorigolo35
      @Polorigolo35 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Early Citroëns used Herringbone gears, like double opposed helical gears... This eliminated the axial trust produced by a single helical gear, while keeping the smooth running, but it was just too costly! And that's why the Citroën logo is a twin V-shape

      +Disco Rico Key to something like this is to work smart, not hard. They design the processes to be as time, energy and material efficient as possible so that the mess is never created in the first place. It's also why the plant is so quiet; efficient, quiet machinery doesn't waste energy by turning it into noise.

      Every part is machined using very little amount of coolant mist. And before assembly, all parts are washed in special ultrasonic "washing machines". All the cost of production of such engine is not only design - it can be designed in quite a short time, but all that machinery helping in assembly, fitting tools, lifts, sealing machines, transportation devices. They are not just out of stock. Every single one is made especially for the purpose they do. Also measuring machines can be quite expensive. The cost of material the engine is made of, reaches here only single percents. I really appreciate the work of people working on the line, mainly because they work as if they were robots. Boring, repetitive work in 3 shifts, or 12 hours a day including holidays. Believe me, you would be excited for a day or two. The real employee doesn't see the whole production process, only just his own part which is for example. Screwing some screws on cylinder head or putting camshafts to a measuring machine. Nothing exciting.

      Been to the factory since they offer tours. BMW prides itself with a employee first policy. every workstation is ergonomically customized to each worker, they work 8 hours per day, 1 hour break and 2 short breaks of 10 mins. They do not work on weekends. And as you described, the factory is very clean with minimal noise, so the job is not very stressful. I also believe they are compensated very well.

      Just ask yourself. why are BMW Boxer bikes the standard for touring that all other manufacturers try to emitate? If these bikes were so unreliable they would not be so popular and loved around the world. As to air vs liquid cooled i dont think that has so much effect on reliability. more on efficiency and power.

    Why is the oil panel sitting soooo low?
    While I understand that it’s just a mass production street application I still wonder why it looks like triangle… the reason boxer engines are so appealing to me is they’re low center of gravity and volume distribution

    Nice to see the automation in the build process. Now when we tear them down on the bench and put them back together again without all the nice jigs and fixtures, you might appreciate the talent involved with that, and understand that we mechanics don’t like working for peanuts.

    Why is there no oil on any of the parts they assemble, you never put a gearbox together dry, and I thought they new what they were doing.

    Pistons are really short and flat now and in old engines they used to be much longer. Does that mean for decades we wasted all that metal ?
