  • Following Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China has stepped up its military activities in the Taiwan Straits. At the same time, Beijing is turning the economic screws on the self-governed island, banning imports on Taiwanese produce.
Meanwhile, the perceived lack of US support for Ukraine has left some Taiwanese questioning American commitment to the island’s defence.
Entangled in a geopolitical power struggle between the US and China, the views and wants of the Taiwanese people are sometimes overshadowed. This episode of Insight offers the Taiwanese perspective of what it means to be caught between giants.

@@jp95js Give it a rest, stupid.
The reality here is that China will not invade Taiwan as long as the US and NATO/EU countries are against it.
The CCP will have to go through the US and NATO/EU countries to accomplish this, and they won't poke that bear.
Regardless of what the "official" US policy on Taiwan is at this time, they won't simply allow the CCP to "invade" Taiwan. It really is as simple as that. China is quite adept at its "Wolf Warrior" diplomacy and saber rattling, but if it really thought it could get away with invading Taiwan without encountering a full-blown war, it would have done so years ago.
And, as @Michael Wang astutely pointed out, China was watching closely the results of Putin's invasion of the Ukraine (and the world's reaction to it - especially the West, since the US is moving away from the globalized world it created.) The unexpected results of what was then considered to be the #2 military machine on the planet being taken to school by a rag-tag group of nationalists made for great consternation in Beijing.
As was the world's immediate reaction to it. Russia was able to sustain worldwide economic sanction due to its position as the supplier of oil and LNG to Europe. China has no such buffer. Her position as "the world's factory" is already weakening as we speak, with Western companies looking to other Asian nations to take up the manufacturing slack.
Vietnam, to use an example, took 8% of the global manufacturing pie away from China just this year, and other Asian nations (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) are already lining up to woo foreign investment to their countries. And that investment is moving out of China quickly. It was foreign investment that made China into the economic powerhouse it is today, but that can change in a moment.
      Just ask Japan.
And lest not forget that time is of the essence here (time the CCP does not have.) The demographics clock has already been ticking for many decades in China (as it did in Japan.) China is aging itself out of becoming a Superpower, or even a regional power capable of launching and supporting such a bold move. And Xi's move toward hardline Communism, and away from Deng's combination of soft Communism and Capitalism is scaring even the most greed-driven corporate leaders.
Had Taiwan not become the sole hub of high end semiconductor output worldwide (or China figured out how to produce high end semiconductors) and the South China Sea not become an avenue for 3/4 of the world's shipping lanes, the West would have had little interest in any of China's claims in the East.
Problem is, the West will not allow China to disrupt the supply of semiconductors, nor take control of the shipping lanes in the SCS.
      It's as simple as that.
It is not a matter of political, nor ideological differences here.
It is simply a matter of money, as, in the end, everything comes down to.

Vietnam did when Beijing try to annex it and likewise for Korea or S.Korea (which is among the best net contributor to global growth) won't exist.
T____T It's like asking "Hey, South Korea, you should unite with the North (which is less than 1/10 of S.Korea's growth per capita) and obey the Kim family so he might show you some mercy... Ugh 90-99% of South Korean will reject it regardless of how they feel about their elected official xD
Besides~ Beijing did try in the past which only ended in a total defeat - the aggressor has the advantage of choosing the time but they would normally need x3 times the force than the defender.
It was already difficult enough for Moscow which *was* the world's 2nd in military power to attempt to capture Ukraine which isn't even among the top 12~ when they share land border... cross straight battles will be many times more difficult.
This being said; Beijing on track for a decline due to numerous reasons (most of it was self-inflicted due to wolf warrior, failing to cut ties with Moscow since Beijing (+ many other) assume Moscow would be victorious, ...many hasn't completely forgotten about the 2020 PANDA..., its failure to keep international promise/treaty (e.g HK 50 years no change) or abide by the international ruling (e.g claim over almost the entire China Sea). Might just gamble to attack Taiwan within the next 4 years before other nations boost up their military strength... or at least while Beijing still has the economic might to attempt to do so...
which in my opinion is like Putin risking the entire Nation for additional land that is less than 3% of its current size T____T Risk Big to Win Small, especially when the cost will greatly be higher than the gain =/

The war is not a bilateral issue but a political one that pits the democrats of Asia against the communists of Asia. For all this talk about how the Euro-Atlantic advocates for democracy it is actually the Asia-Pacific which has been the most ready, willing and able to die for democracy. This was the case in the past (South Korea is a case in point) but will be even more so the case in the future as the geopolitical situation in Asia gets more tense. The argument that elderly people in Taiwan want to unify with the mainland for the culture is a feeble argument. It might be unnoticed but the ccp has gutted Chinese culture in the mainland and replaced it with an offensive posture that has no link to Chinese history or tradition. Wanting to reunite with a lost culture is impossible and they are remembering a lost past. Taiwan has the embers of China as it should be still safe on the island. Don't allow those embers to be snuffed out by the pla and ccp. Free China support TAIWAN.

"China's final warning" (Russian: последнее китайское предупреждение) is a Russian proverb that originated in the former Soviet Union to refer to a warning that carries no real consequences.
Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States during the 1950s and 1960s were strained due to the Taiwan Strait issues. American military fighter jets regularly patrolled the Taiwan Strait, which led to formal protests being regularly lodged by the Chinese Communist Party in the form of a "final warning", for their fighter maneuvers in the strait. However, no real consequences were given for ignoring the "final warnings".
The People's Republic of China released its first "final warning" to the United States for their reconnaissance flights on 7 September 1958, during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis. At the time, the United States considered the Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China and conducted reconnaissance flights in waters controlled by the People's Republic of China. China would then record such incidents, and issue a "final warning" through diplomatic channels for each incident that occurred. *More than 900 Chinese "final warnings" had been issued by the end of 1964.*

CNA is very biased, the framing of the entire issue for starters. Taiwan is not "caught in between" the US and China. The Republic of CHINA (Taiwan) has been a country since its founding in the early 1900's. It was Chaing Kai Shek, the Leader of China during World War 2 who retreated to the island of Taiwan after his defeat to Mao and his communist (CCP). The CCP has NEVER governed the island of Taiwan, not for a minute. China says the own the entire South China Sea and all islands therein. The US answered the call from another sovereign democracy for help. The 9-Dash line is the biggest joke that a country has ever put forward. The Communist on the Mainland claims many lands that they have never occupied, large swathes of India, Pakistan, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakstan, and many more. The CCP is a dirty red stain that the US should clean from the Globe. China comes up with so much diplomatic trash it's hard to take anything they say seriously. And if you thought that Putin was a paper tiger, wait until you see China. They are the biggest Paper Tiger in history. Al their equipment is garbage, never field tested. Morale is garbage as the soldiers are fighting for nothing more than "The Party". And tactics are trash. It's basically "you men run towards that machinegun", Full frontal, human wave attacks, i.e. Korean War. Please China attack Taiwan, so we can put an end to the Mao Poser, Xi PingPong and the rest of the sheep that follow him around.

Taiwan was a region of China that fought to become China´s government and failed. The Chinese Civil War has not ended as the US has intervened first with threats of nuking China then later by establishing an agreement of strategic ambiguity, our as the Chinese may put it , “Americans speak with a forked tongue”. The US wants to restore Taiwan to nation status by incrementally involving Taiwan in international affairs. It does this by saendimng its leaders to establish relationships with Taiwan amnd pushing Taiwan into intyernational forums and committees. China sees the trick and complains practically daily about US transgressions. As time passes China tries to involve Taiwan in cross strait trade as well as social and other business transactions. Taiwan has been self governed since the end of World War II. From the perspective of UN guidelines, Taiwan should be given the option of independence, integration into china as a region, our as a FREE COMMONEALTH WITH TIES ESTABLISHED THROUGH MUTUAL AGREEMENT. TTaiwan and thje US should petition the UN for Free Commonwealth. But the US loses a strategic pawn if that were to happen. But for Taiwan and China this would be the best of both worlds. It will be part of China under mutual guidelines. But it will be free on the world stage, and recognized by The UN.
