@MyNameIsGabe keep in mind tri portable (portable 3rd) does NOT have dire miralis. Its final boss is amatsu the storm dragon. It also doesnt have brachy. Also tri ultimate has lucent nargacuga and abyssal lagiacrus so theres that as well
As a person who started off with old school monster hunter (freedom 2nd),and by extension unite, unite would definately be last one id play first if trying to get into old school mh. Its a great game and all, but from tri onwards monsters were made to act more like living creatures. They could get tired, fatigued, needing to feed. Basically they had a stamina bar, not visible of course. Which leads to a lot of dps opportunities. In unite and before, monsters had no concept of stamina, as it did not exist for them. They acted less like actual creatures, more like actual boss fights. The monsters would never tire, they would keep going like the energizer bunny non stop, only changing pace for rage modes and the eventuall limp back to the nest.
I hope we ll see from each gen 1 or 2 ports to PC and maybe also the switch. That would be sick. MH G; MH Freedom Unite; MH 3 G; Portable 3rd and MH4. I would love to play Generation Ultimate on PC and Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd on the Switch.
I really like the recommendation. I got into Monster Hunter after watching Asmongold play World. Got World on Sale, and with time and patience grew to understand the experience, and I like it. And I am mostly definitely going to play 4U next, then 3U on my Wii U alongside transferring data back and forth with my 3DS version as they intended just for the experience, then I will go to Freedome Unite, then to celebrate my achievement I will go back to 3DS and play Generations, followed by GU on my Switch, then Rise. (I am going to my 2024 the year of Monster Hunter for me, and I really am grateful to have given this series that is still new to me a chance.) So thank you for being a part of my experience. Also, who would have thought that I had all the systems available to play GEN 1 - 5, also with Wilds, once that comes out, 2025 will be the year I finally upgrade to a PS5 so it call connects.
I started with base World and love GU on the Switch and 4U. Problem is I had to get 4U on an emulator so I can't play multiplayer to get help for some of the G Rank hub quests. I wanna play 3U as well but don't have a Wifi U so a lack of mp again will make it a much tougher experience
The line of old school to new school is gen 4 to 5 because of the huge leap. I think back in the day you could consider Gen 3 new school and anything prior old school as well for similar reasons.
MH4U is also very beginner friendly. It was my first game and it really eases you into the gameplay loop by establishing the importance of preparation before starting a hunt but it doesn't overstay it's welcome like it does in MH3U. Seltas is also one of the best designed tutorial monsters, it's not as aggressive as Great Jaggi can be and it has very easy to reach hitzones and easy to read attacks.
I would consider MH4U more beginner friendly than World which throws so many things at the player all at once. World can get very confusing because of its extra systems on top of the story mode/narrative that is being shoved in your face at the same time. 4U is simpler.
i started in world and went to gen u. got my ass kicked by the first large jeggi monster. i gave up cause i wasa baby. after i got 4u i loved old world more then when i tried gen. its just so close to world minus mining and bug nets being infinite and having more info about monsters in notes
I'm playing since 2005, you should try it, there's no food, sharpness are horrible, I can't kill Kut ku, in 5 minutes, there's a mission called handle with care, that makes the most professional US rugby player a jokes. Try it I dare you
I played 3U first but 4U is what got me into the series and eventually made me appreciate 3U more and eventually beat the game solo so I couldn't agree more with your choice and order of games for players wanting a taste of old school
Getting 3u and then 4u will show the great difference between the two generations. 4U was the birth of advance movement options. Mounting was a new universal tool for hunters to use to increase safe damage output and creating an opening for other hunter to heal or buff themselves. 3u however, was much slower compared to 4u but had surprising depth to it. The more methodical pace of the game had each individual choice mid hunt more important, getting rushed by a Brachy? When do you sheath your weapon to heal? How will you maneuver around him, what about his puddles of slime? You not being able to jump around with low cliffs or your insect glaive, what are your immediate options? Having to see the patterns of your opponents and being able to make accurate predictions will greatly reward you on either an aggressive push or to pull back and gather yourself.
Generations was my first MH game and I love it and GU to death but I agree that GU wouldn’t be a good intro into the series. It’s very overwhelming and has the slowest start in the village but it’s completely manageable if you have a friend guide you through it. I got all of my friends who started in World to jump into GU just fine with me acting as their guide. But for the hunters that fly solo, 4U is ideal choice imo.
Old games were punishing, yes, but what I really appreciated about them was their INTENTIONALITY. Everything was slower and there was serious commitment to your attacks. Also no ridiculous crowd control like mounts and silkbinds. To win you really needed go in with a plan and outplay the monster. Plus there's something good about the simplicity as well. Now even the most beginner friendly weapons ALL have meter management on top of their other mechanics.
@@Exel3nce I have to disagree with world having a nice balance tbh, back then you had to actually make sure you were well-supplied with enough pots, mats for pots, traps, bombs, additional mats for traps/ bombs etc, and on top of that you had to make sure you brought the correct gear too. World made that obsolete with the supply camp letting you refill supplies and change gear on a whim. Didn't eat? Well, you can still have the handler prepare a meal for you at camp. Placed a trap and the monster ran off? Don't worry, you basically have infinite mats to make more at camp. World did really improve the fluidity of attacks and added seamless areas tho, but mostly it feels like a hack and slash rather than a monster hunting action rpg. The broken hitboxes and frame 1 charge spam from old gen can fuck off tho.
I agree with 4U being a good start for newcomers to the series. While 3U was the one that got me interested in Monster Hunter, 4U is when I truly fell in love with it.
Started with the original Monster Hunter on PS2, eventually came back with MH4U on the 3DS. That game deserves all the praise, such a solid entry with so much variety. Also something about playing Monster Hunter portably on the 3DS got me hooked on the games when I was younger. Playing through MH3U now and really enjoying it as well.
WE NEED AN OLD WORLD HD COLLECTION!!! 3U is trapped on 3ds & WiiU 4U never got a console release. All the PSP titles are trapped on PsP* *Monster Hunter G was on the Wii *Portable 3rd was on PS3 MH2 is lost to time. "Enjoy the Hunting Life! G!!!" -Instructor
remaster all the old games 3u,4u,freedom unite, portable 3rd, maybe even the first game, throw remastered frontier in there if you want to get crazy release it on console and pc call it the ultimate collection then profit.
As someone who's first game was freedom unite I would recommend anyone new to the series to play it eventually to get a feel for old monster hunter and sort of the beginning of the more modern titles. It's actually really fun once you get the hang of it and is definitely a good challenge
I started playing freedom 1 and it's fun for me. The transport missions are unfair in the guild hall, but I like the hunting and the challenge after 3u and 4u 😁
@@florianp1283 oh yea that... I remember delivering that one damn crystal and they purposely blocked the easiest path and made you go through that one area with 3 bullfangoes😫
@@llthll in the guild hall they want 3 in every transport mission. You have 5-6 tries or the time is against you. The monsters in the areas are doubled , because it is for more people... I had to do break after 1 of these missions every time. I wonder why... 😑
I used to detest the concept of underwater but looked on it more fondly until I realized something like Gobul, who I consider to be the best underwater Monster in terms of design, will be gone completely. It seems like they've gave Monster Hunter more and more verticality to the point where I believe giving underwater a second chance wouldn't be such a bad idea.
4U is for sure one of the more beginner friendly and also unique games in the series, it was my first game in middle school and loved to show off armor sets that i farmed to my friends who introduced me to the game the next day/week at school.
Monster Hunter 4U is still my favorite monster hunter game of all time, and the fact that they’re bringing back some of the best monsters from 4U in Sunbreak makes me very happy
Having played Freedom Unite as my gateway to Monster Hunter experience felt like a pilgrimage at this point. Played all the titles from then and I can safely say that MH4U is definitely the peak of Monster Hunter. MHWorld and Rise feels like it's geared for new players to experience a "less punishing" but enjoyable game to Monster Hunter and I'm all for it. Still, it's a great experience to go back and play the older titles. Can't go wrong with any of them.
Since you played all the titles what order would you recommend playing them in or at least starting with? I’ve played a bit of world and a bit of 3U so far
I'd love a port of 4U at some point; but its pretty rare for Capcom to ever rerelease older MH tittles (outside of the random mobile ports). I also imagine a lot of the anime/USJ/Nintendo crossover materials make it harder as time goes on.
As a world baby ive been trying to play through 4 but im getting my ass handed to me by village quest gore magala. My biggest gripe is the dumb flexing animation after chucking a health pot. It ticks me off to no end to see the hunter do that.
I started playing these games back around 2009/2010 when I got a psp for Christmas. My sister and I had seen the commercials for Tri and thought it was cool so when we found Freedom 2 on the psp in a Best Buy or something I gave it a whirl. Its been 12 years and Monster Hunter is my favorite series now. It makes me happy to see that I'm not the only one who suggests 4 Ultimate as a good jumping off point because even to this day I think its the best one to start with. Even when it came out, it just felt balance in a way that Freedom 2/Unite and 3 Ultimate didn't. The way I look at it is; the skills you develop in 4U are the most transferrable in the series, what you learn helps with later games and even earlier games though to a lesser degree. But that's just me. Good video overall, as usual ^^
I definitely think portable third is a great starting point personally, my absolute favorite in the series as a big fan but very casual/bad player of monster hunter!
for freedom unite, its clankiness in a way make the game way more realistic than its successor, the gameplay is slow and grounded, and you don't have any of the flashy anime stuff ( looking at you Ls and Ds) that are in the 4 and 5 gen. FU in term of ambiance really make me feel like a hunter, you live in a snowy mountain village and you go on hunt with your heavy ass weapon that make your movement really inhibited. as opposed to rise where i feel like a superhero on steroid flying accross the map like its nothing. ambiance and aethetism can play a huge factor in one appreciation of a game, more than gameplay for some.
The first MH I played the most was *Freedom Unite* and my second was *World* , you can notice the drop in difficulty, I was a little disappointed but I still enjoyed it.
I never had interest in the series, but when I got a 3DS (very recently actually) I decided to give the MH series a chance, seeing it always in the top best games for the system. I played it a bit, enjoyed it, had my ass kicked by it, but really liked it. Later I got World, and even though it was a lot of fun, it lacked the challenge I was enjoying in 4U. Long story short, even after getting Iceborne, Isee myself playing 4U and even Freedom Unite (recent addition, but super fun and challenging) way more lol.
For anyone interested Thanks to the shamans who managed to do the impossible, there is classic frontier (pre-G) server out now It plays kinda like a mix of Freedom Unite and Dos with what feels like a bit better hitboxes and without the key quest system. Pretty fun way to spend few evenings.
22:59 I've played enough MHDos to say that it is my favorite (even though I have played more other MH games), but that game is different from the others, the developers prioritized the coherence and realism of the world and the mechanics, for example if you want to get honey in the jungle, in the winter you'll find almost none, but for example in MH Freedom Unite if you have the honey upgrade for the farm you will find a lot after every quest. This is why I also don't recommend it for beginners, but we should be thankful to Dos for implementing the Longsword, Dual Blades, Hunting Horn, Gunlance, Bow and the charged attack for Greatsword. It created the Pelagus group for big monsters (Bullfango already existed in MH1), it has the Elders Dragons that are actually dragons (Gen 1 had Kirin and Lao Shan, being only Fatalis to have the shape of a dragon). It was the first game to let you upgrade your armor, in Gen 1 you can only upgrade your weapon. Also this game have different seasons and full day cycle that affected the world in general. But for beginners I totally recommend Freedom Unite, being to this day the Monster Hunter I played the most, but also the video game I spent the most hours on. I don't have a reason to write about newer games, since the video is already great at doing so. I hope this information is helpful for someone. (The comment is late, but I've just watched the video)
For Gen 1 I've only played MHFreedom for PSP, I've finished the Village Quests, but because the game is simple, it is also very hard, but I didn't liked that much to play the online quests.
PS: If you have already played old monster hunter games, then I think is a good moment for playing MHDos, after you slay Lunastra, there's a moment I'll never forget.
MHFU & MHP3 were my faves. had so many good memories of playing those games. The siege quests were my personal favorite. They gave Elder Dragons these special feel to them by making you fight them throughout multiple quests. Sure, some of the hitboxes can be janky as hell, but imo they are part of the experience.
I started with 4U and it has a great learning curve. The progression of larger and larger monsters is very natural and fair to the player. It also is the game that started the trend of the developers making the games “easier” to be more appealing to new players. This creates a good balance between not being super unforgiving and frustrating like the earlier games, while not being stupidly easy like base Rise was.
MHFU still my fave game in the series, I totally agree with the comment about how it's almost nicer having less mechanics of your weapon so that you don't need to focus so much on that, it means you can focus more on the monsters moves and the environment, positioning etc... I hope they remaster it
MH4U got me into the series and I agree with it being the best place to start when getting into the older games of the series. It taught me to watch and learn how monsters reached or fought. It also taught me the importance of the Superman Dive, or I guess now know as the Leap of Faith. You didn't have counters to go back on if everything else failed (unless you played Lance). If you put yourself in a bad spot, you paid for it, forcing you to learn how monsters attacked and reacted to situations. You'll also fall in love with the NPCs that join you along your journey with the Caravan. The Man, Lil Miss Forge and my favorite Guildmarm.
This video made me so happy. After recently getting back into Monster Hunter (World and Rise) since last playing FU years ago. I have taken the advice and picked these games up for my 3DS
I'm a fiver, started at World and fell in love with the series. I already knew about it since Tri though but never had the oportunity to play any of the games until World. I'm determited to play trough every single base game + G rank expansion of every single generation and kill every single large monster of the entire series. I don't know how feasible it is but I'll be damned if at least I don't try. Playing trough MHF1 right now and damn, metal raths got hands.
3 months late, but if that’s your goal I’d definitely recommend starting with the newer entries and going backwards. Starting with the older entries might be *really* hard if you don’t ease into it. Like, I started with Tri, but even then I couldn’t get into FU until playing through P3rd.
I'd also recommend 4U as a first old gen title. Aside from the qualities you mentioned, i saw someone talk about how Seltas has a great design for a beginner monster, which i agree with. But there's also the use of the story to ease the players into the series mechanics. As you gather members for the caravan, you also learn little by little the different things that you need to know : gathering and multiplying items, the forge, the cantine etc. The game does a very good job at untroducing these mechanics alongside their associated characters. There's even a tutorial 1 star quest for each weapon to teach you the basics, which gen 5 didn't bother to do lol
Mhfu was my introduction to the series back in 2010 or so each game has its own unique monster roster but I feel mhfu was particularly unique and the old multiplayer communities were amazing like mhtri and 3u from my experience
Honestly if you have access to Tri and extra wii remotes, get your friends to do arena co-op with you. Having someone teach you to play in the same room is SOOO useful! It's how I got my kids into the series 🤣 I suggest it as while the newer ones are easier Tri also has LESS options to confuse new players and will help beginners get to grips with the menus ect without getting too overwhemed.
I actually recently bought a Wii U so I could play MH3U. I also bought Monster Hunter on PS2 last week. I wish I would have gotten into these games sooner.
I started with World and its quickly became my favorite video game series ever. As of right now my plan is Play sunbreak Finish G rank in GU Play 4U Play 3U Play Freedom Unite I feel like this list will give me the most out of the entire series, considering the exclusiveness of each entry
I started off with Freedom Unite a really long time ago, and had not owned any MH games since. The jump from Gen 2 straight into Gen 5 in Rise was quite a whiplash in terms of new content and mechanics, but a welcome improvement to quality of life.
Gu is just a nice way to experience all the older monsters and most areas without having to play through 100s of hours of old games. I have fon memories of gu and despite starting with tri and having p'ayed four, gu is when the series truly clicked for me.
I think it's absolutely absurd at 5:14 to say anything before G Rank in GU is a walk in the park. I don't disagree with your overall point that GU is a bad starting point, but how on earth can you say it's easy. Maybe for those of us with 100's of hours in each game, sure. But anyone but the most hardcore of action game players will struggle, cart and find it difficult. You have become proficient at these mechanics and it's warping your view of the series difficulty, for sure
Out of all the old school entries, GU is one of the easiest until g rank. I play every game regularly so I'm able to compare them between one another with up to date views. Hate when dudes like you come in here with no knowledge of me and tell me my views are warped. Maybe YOU'RE just bad at the game homie
@@SuperRADLemon I think it's very indicative of your tryhard mindset that you'd think I'd be offended by having my skill called in question. Saying that GU is easy until G, particularly for a newcomer, is just wrong chief
Brother I'm just positing the situation. If you think I'm a tryhard you really don't know much about the community. In relation to the other games in the series, pre gen5, GU is the easiest, I dunno what to tell you. You're allowed to disagree.
While MH3U was my first experience with MH & I also played MH4U, I only played the demos of these games because I was too poor to afford them myself. My first actual owned MH was World & then Stories 2 & Rise. I will say back when I tried MH3U & MH4U on the 3DS as demos, I enjoyed them & it's what made me keep on following the series from then until I finally got some of the future games. I played those demos so much until their limits went out, I just loved them. Maybe one day I might get MH3U & MH4U for my 3DS so I can see what I missed.
I tried getting into MH with Tri. I had no understanding of the fundamentals of the game, thinking it was a traditional jrpg. I got rocked by the first monster and just got frustrated and quit. Eventually when 4U was announced, I was following projared and to my great fortune, he explained entirely the mindset you needed to have to get into this series. So I picked up 4U and fell in love.
when i was "done" with world and rise i never thought that i would love "old school" monster hunter, had a really rough time with 4u, but then i tried Gu and loved it, then i played more of 4u and loved it, 3u is also really fun because its so unique
I remember as a kid I went from tri, to portable3rd when I was gifted a psp followed by freedom unite, then XX on 2ds and rounding it out with Gen Ult and rise my favourites being gen ult and Portable3rd
4U was a masterpiece! And 3U was very unique. But Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd cannot be slept on for the "full" MH experience (top to bottom or vise versa).
Tri on the Wii was my first game and I love it so much to this day. In fact I never liked newer ones lol but wilds has really great combat animations and sound design so I think I’ll play it
I know the video is old all I started with rise and fell in love with series i wanted go back and play some older games I got recommended portable 3rd by alot my friends who grinded the game out back in the day on there modded psp Ive since picked it up and sunk days and days into it already racking more hours into then rise such amazing game
As someone who went from World to GU, and then further all the way to THE first Monster Hunter on PS2, I can confirm that while the more simplified moveset for weapons is fine, right-stick attacking is an atrocity that must be burned
This video is very very good and i fully agree with your recommendations. And that's coming from a gen 2 veteran who started back on the PSP with the bros.
I want another classic styled MH game using all the older mechanics like flex healing, paintball, loading zone based maps, the older visuals and atmosphere, and more.
@@RepublicofODLUM It's not nostalgia if I literally play the older MH games and like them better. You're just in denial that there are people out there with different tastes than you. Flex healing emphasizes commitment based action which makes the game more challenging, fun, and engaging. Loading screens help deliver the sense of scale of the maps you hunt on that seamless maps can never do. This is why many open world games feel small.
I started playing Frontier this week and it's so good, 4U was my first game, it's what made fall in love with monster hunter, and now I want to go even further back, like 3U, FU and P3rd
Also good to note for any completionists (like myself), by playing MHFU, MH3U, MH4U, MHGU, MHW:I, and MHR:S, you have access to every single monster in the mainline series. Hunting at least 1 of each monster in the series is a good goal for those that are completionists.
Leading with my conclusion: World did a fantastic job at drilling core, foundational concepts into my mind and I highly recommend for anyone who loved World and Rise to take this video's advice and give older games a try. The CPP is harder to get these days, but I would earnestly recommend getting a 3DS and a CPP on the cheap if you can and nabbing 4U and 3U. It's a good selection to try out. After World finally got me past the Monster Hunter Learning Cliff and I sank actual hundreds of hours into it and mined the content dry, I approached a friend of mine with the exact question that this video asks, and his answer was 'do you have a 3DS? Go get 4U and Gen, play 4U first.' So I did, and I even put a direct order to Nintendo in for a Circle Pad Pro. Best investment I made, 4U was incredible and the fact that I nestled into it so comfortably, with just a few adjustments for older mechanics, really cemented for me that Monster Hunter was always a series meant for me, but I just couldn't get past that Learning Cliff to break into the series. But once I got past it, older games became these old hidden gems, full of content ready to be played and enjoyed. After 4U the timing of things wound up so that Iceborne came out and then GU came out by the time I was done with that, and I can confidently say that going from 4U to GU works just fine, although it does mean my 3DS MHGen cartridge has sat unopened and unloved. Next up on my menu (mostly because of videos on this channel extoling its virtues) is 3U on the 3DS.
Important thing to mention: monster hunter 4 has aiden the guy who helps you with fatalis in world so you will see a familiar face you can tell it's him by hair color.
4 Ultimate is the best Monster Hunter for me because no ridiculous style arts and bug wire which make it more realistic from other Monster Hunter but Portable 3rd is the most nostalgic because I love the village, music and theme.
Well, this explained a lot about why I loved 3U's aesthetic so much, and was always middling on 4U's. I don't really like summer, but loved 3U's cool beach aesthetic, while not really vibing with 4U's hit you with as much summer as possible. This was before being locked into Dundorma, Shagaru competing with the glorified 5 minute siege tutorial with Rusted Kushala being there, whatever the hell the Everwood was, and then Wystones and OG Apex, which caused me to scream EXTERNALLY when it showed up in one of Rise's trailers. Have to agree, 4U is probably the most accessible one to get into old school. You don't have GU's complete and utter bloat, 3U has swimming, and Freedom Unite is just old. Next option would be Portable 3rd, because it still has cats, doesn't have G rank to pad game time, still has the farm, and doesn't have mounting. It's straight you, the monster, and your ability to work around the monster. It's less janky than FU while not having a bunch of different mechanics the later entries have. It's Monster Hunter at its most fundamental. But you'd need fan translation or emulation to play it.
3rd is over after 80 hours nothing to do except for custom hacked hunts... you can play mhfu for 1000 hours+ and still haven’t killed a single g rank fatalis
@@ranges787 I mean portable 3rd is literally a High Rank only game. Doesn't really surprise anyone that it will end very fast. Also Freedom Unite is just ok, you have to REALLY like the game to play it for that long. I replayed MHFU with my brother over the summer, and we beat literally everything in the game including JUMP events in just under 300 hours. We were basically done. Did we make every piece of gear and perfect sets? Hell no, we didn't even need it.
Unite was my very first and still my favorite, just above World. Honestly the major jump between those two is really not that difficult. Great vid with the quick and thorough rundown of the generations!
Without having started the video, I'm going to have to say MH4U as it was the first game where I really got into the series. Generations/Ultimate is definitely a close second because it's going to be a better experience on the switch, although you can emulate MH4U and it feels just fine (much better than playing on the 3ds). I would love a remaster of 4U just for some better controls and resolution. I did play tri (on my buddies wii, yay split screen?) and then 3U with some friends back in the day and got relatively far into the game but I wouldn't really say I 'got it', but I certainly appreciate it more now and I even bought a Wii U for the sole purpose of playing it online while the servers are still up. I got my friend into MHW (her first MH game) but we're done with Rise until Sunbreak and I want more MH, so I convinced her to get Gen U on the switch and we're going to play through that now. She looked at 3U and 4U and was a hard pass, so I'll take Gen U since I never played the 'Ultimate' release on switch.
I played a few hours of Iceborne on someone else's PS4 before dipping my toes into Generations Ultimate, and it was great. I learned about how questing worked from Iceborne, but then getting into GenU wasn't alienating since I hadn't gotten comfortable yet. Plus gaijinhunter's weapon series put a twinkle in my eye, and I still watch those videos after my 100+ hours.
back then when I started playing in Freedom Unite, figthing a Tigrex was so scary, I now think of him so fondly. Oh Tigrex my beloved always a joy to see it in action.
I try mhfu but I have mix feeling, because idk what to grind for where the resources to get and what skill to get for armour. So that I end up stop playing it as a newcomer
My trajectory through the franchise was all over the place. Playing demo of the original game and hating it, then during exchange program in Japan got hooked on Portable 2nd G then fell off hard because of life, got back with World, then picked up 3U and 4U (at the same time) along with a 3DS, after getting a switch did the same picked up Rise and GU together. I think it's just about picking a game that from surface level speaks to you, be it the monster roster, mechanics or just vibe of the game. I personally adore GU, it's a comfort game, but I already did play a lot of the games before that.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Tri Ultimate on the 3DS only is a war crime and should be ported and updated like Generations Ultimate was with a crap load more content, all the older monsters, their newer forms like the apex or different colored forms and probably should add in some and I do mean some of the modern monsters like for example some from World/Iceborne or Rise/Sunbreak. Like Generations Ultimate did with the multiple old school hun areas, they need to add in a free roam area like Moga Woods in Tri Ultimate. You know like a practise this new weapon or play style or just fooling around and understanding the mechanics of said monster. Like quickly grabbing a capture monster or herbs or quickly gathering things like ore or foods or whatever people want to do or even a break from questing and current story progression. Again it would amazing like Generations Ultimate where there's a farm to help out the town and helping grow food or raise smaller monster animals in said farm like an ecology animal farm or barn. Then head over to like Pokke village or older towns or the offline cities would be a great idea to have quests and missions in huge offline hubs for nostalgia sake or even new experiences of memory community building like in Tri Ultimate for the ship canteen area where you can arm wrestle and hang out
4U: First time MH had a good damn story. Amazing weapon move set (LS got nerf reeeeeee). SO MANY monsters! Amazing locale and town. And last but not least... GUILD MARM BEST GALLL REEEEEEEE
Mh4u was my first look to the mh franchise and man how i fking love it, i remember from the start, when dying 3 times in a row vs great jaggi, to how impressed i was when watched gore and dalamadur for the first time and when i soloed gogmazios.
As someone who's first game was MHGU, I must say, yeah, this game is nuts! But I wouldn't love the franchise as must as I do if it wasn't for this game, lol, it really hyped Rise for me, and motivated an interest in the older games with all of those charismatic characters, I'm now playing MH Tri, but for sure will play MH4U, MHP3rd and MHFU as I progress through my journey! btw I chose Tri instead of 3U because I wanted to main Medium Bowgun
I started on 3U tbh got myself cracked by qurupeco so many times till rathian came and slaughter me, took few days to kinda get used to gameplay but oh boy i loved that one for sure

@MyNameIsGabe get tri last as portable 3rd i think has more content. Plus portable 3rd has an hd version for ps3 (if you can find it)
I hope we ll see from each gen 1 or 2 ports to PC and maybe also the switch.
It's a shame these classics are starting to become less accessible, but I 100% can see gen 5 hunters enjoying 4u. Capcom please remaster
I started with base World and love GU on the Switch and 4U. Problem is I had to get 4U on an emulator so I can't play multiplayer to get help for some of the G Rank hub quests. I wanna play 3U as well but don't have a Wifi U so a lack of mp again will make it a much tougher experience

I'm praying they put mh 4 ultimate on switch because it'll be epic

Generations was my first MH game and I love it and GU to death but I agree that GU wouldn’t be a good intro into the series. It’s very overwhelming and has the slowest start in the village but it’s completely manageable if you have a friend guide you through it. I got all of my friends who started in World to jump into GU just fine with me acting as their guide. But for the hunters that fly solo, 4U is ideal choice imo.
Must say, it's been really interesting seeing how the game evolved from the first one. The analog controls still gives me flashbacks.
I started freedom 1 the 1st time and it's fun for me after 3u and 4u. Maybe it's the challenge for me

Everything was slower and there was serious commitment to your attacks. Also no ridiculous crowd control like mounts and silkbinds. To win you really needed go in with a plan and outplay the monster. Yes, which world hit a nice Balance with, without having all that crap old gen had
@@Exel3nce 🤡🤡🤡
@@teraclysm1912 good Argument. Go
@@Exel3nce I have to disagree with world having a nice balance tbh, back then you had to actually make sure you were well-supplied with enough pots, mats for pots, traps, bombs, additional mats for traps/ bombs etc, and on top of that you had to make sure you brought the correct gear too.
@@Exel3nce I would probably say generations is probably better with that but I started with it so I'm probably horribly biased towards it.

As someone who's first game was freedom unite I would recommend anyone new to the series to play it eventually to get a feel for old monster hunter and sort of the beginning of the more modern titles. It's actually really fun once you get the hang of it and is definitely a good challenge
It might be added to PS Plus Premium

I used to detest the concept of underwater but looked on it more fondly until I realized something like Gobul, who I consider to be the best underwater Monster in terms of design, will be gone completely. And yet this Franchise will probably be forever be on ground lvl and therefore repetetive over time. All thanks to the biggest crybabies
I'd love a port of 4U at some point; but its pretty rare for Capcom to ever rerelease older MH tittles (outside of the random mobile ports). I also imagine a lot of the anime/USJ/Nintendo crossover materials make it harder as time goes on.

Good luck, happy hunting!
FU in term of ambiance really make me feel like a hunter, you live in a snowy mountain village and you go on hunt with your heavy ass weapon that make your movement really inhibited. as opposed to rise where i feel like a superhero on steroid flying accross the map like its nothing. ambiance and aethetism can play a huge factor in one appreciation of a game, more than gameplay for some.
yeah MHFU is a different breed
I have the same opinion. I started with 3u,then 4u, world and now I play freedom 1 for the challenges
For anyone interested
Thanks to the shamans who managed to do the impossible, there is classic frontier (pre-G) server out now
It plays kinda like a mix of Freedom Unite and Dos with what feels like a bit better hitboxes and without the key quest system.
I think this is a great list of recommendations. I especially like the shout-out of P3rd. One of my favorites, but one I never hear people talk about.
These are certified hood classics

Being a fan of the series sense the Monster Hunter Tri days Monster hunter is one of my favorite game franchises out there.
As of right now my plan is
Play sunbreak
Finish G rank in GU
Play 4U
Play 3U
Play Freedom Unite
I feel like this list will give me the most out of the entire series, considering the exclusiveness of each entry
I started off with Freedom Unite a really long time ago, and had not owned any MH games since. The jump from Gen 2 straight into Gen 5 in Rise was quite a whiplash in terms of new content and mechanics, but a welcome improvement to quality of life.
I say start in freedom unite

Starting with Tri made me an instant fan of the series but my very first intro was one of the psp versions and I've been playing ever since.
I started with Tri too! Those cheesy "Dangerous Catch" style commercials made me pick it up as soon as I could
I tried getting into MH with Tri.

@@RepublicofODLUM It's not nostalgia if I literally play the older MH games and like them better. You're just in denial that there are people out there with different tastes than you.
Flex healing emphasizes commitment based action which makes the game more challenging, fun, and engaging.

Also good to note for any completionists (like myself), by playing MHFU, MH3U, MH4U, MHGU, MHW:I, and MHR:S, you have access to every single monster in the mainline series. Hunting at least 1 of each monster in the series is a good goal for those that are completionists.
I say the thing I will miss the most are the old guild halls from previous games. The loc lac was so cool. Dundorma too.
Go get 4U and Gen, play 4U first.'
So I did, and I even put a direct order to Nintendo in for a Circle Pad Pro.
I simp the fuck out of the apex system in 4u
4 Ultimate is the best Monster Hunter for me because no ridiculous style arts and bug wire which make it more realistic from other Monster Hunter but Portable 3rd is the most nostalgic because I love the village, music and theme.

Still have my Original Freedom Unite Save with 2000hours on, good old times =)
She looked at 3U and 4U and was a hard pass, so I'll take Gen U since I never played the 'Ultimate' release on switch.
prepare to grab some gathering tools that take up inventory space and spend multiple runs scrounging around
I want swimming to come back, updated of course
Personally i would recommend 4U or 3U for a classic starter, i love GU but it can be really overwhelming
back then when I started playing in Freedom Unite, figthing a Tigrex was so scary, I now think of him so fondly. Oh Tigrex my beloved always a joy to see it in action.
I bought mhfu on the iphone as my first experience of the old mh games and the game would kick my sorry ass 💀
I try mhfu but I have mix feeling, because idk what to grind for where the resources to get and what skill to get for armour. So that I end up stop playing it as a newcomer
Plus if they don't we can spam Capcom Email requesting they put mh 4 ultimate on switch
@@johnross5098 nope but I'll love to start it
There is a reason, that analog controls didnt stay after the first game.
I started in 4U very happy I did because I'm now an IG user
Me too
Portable third is my favorite MH overall I spent months playing it with my friends. I also miss swimming :'( and the shakalakas
Don't forget our boy Gogmazios
