CORRECTION: I mixed up DOS and 3U when it comes to subquests. Requests also apparently first appeared in DOS. They were also in Tri and removed in 3U for some reason. Thanks for watching. Please consider subscribing!!
Very good analysis so far, as someone who first started off with Tri, even when I remove the rose tinted lens when looking at the entire generation, it's overall pretty solid and good for an entry for those wanting to try out an "old school" MH game.
remember when the way to check what table you landed in was to get the fishery to fish you some fish, and check what kind of fish you got and then cross reference it to some spread sheet to point you what charm table you landed on? lmao..... the fishes tell you the fate of what table you landed on. lol.
Thats actually kinda sick. Tables shouldn't be a thing imo. That might just be because I love making a build for everything and charms are super important for that
@@jasonarreguin1047 I didn't mind the tables, it was being permanently locked to a table that was the problem. MH4U also had charm tables, but they reset whenever you restarted a game.
@@jasonarreguin1047 It was a bug. Tables were supposed to change with each quest or each time you loaded your save. But apparently you got stuck with the first one that was given to you.
Been looking forward to this. Played this game 8 years ago soloing my way up to G Rank on 3DS. That experience completely shaped how I view games and it’s great to see someone who shared that experience
Same dude, I grew up on this game ever since elementary school and finally now in high school I finished it all the way solo. Such a fantastic experience always wanting to push the boundaries from that first glimpse of dire miralis in the intro. Never did I ever think I would make it to him, but I’ve even beaten village Alatreon at this point.
@@omegawario7479 Same here, started playing at 10 years old. I wish I experienced the final stretch of game solo but I fought Dire with a group like I had always wanted to. Incredible experience.
@@karma6761 it’s so remarkable how many people had a similar experience. I always felt isolated playing mh as a kid since when you’d go online it would always be older folks but now that we’re all adults (or almost adults) it’s pretty easy to see how many of us were cut from the same cloth.
Getting close to Gogmazios in MH4U to give that game a break at its storywise endpoint, I’ve been wanting to look into and play 3U after getting it on a 3ds eshop sale. I regret selling the MH3 wii version way back when.
That was so ironic when I went to fight Agnaktor about a week ago. He was sleeping when I placed the bombs, then right as I go to toss the paintball to blow 'em, Kayamba tossed a boomerang and woke them up, making me not get the beak material. Cringe.
Same, Great Jaggi is such a good starter monster to fight and learn the combat in MHTri. While World was solid with it's Great Jagras, personally Great Jaggi had more to offer as a starting monster imo which makes it an overall better monster.
I feel like underwater combat could be reworked now that we are 10 years past tri, specially in rise with the wirebugs to grant us more mobility underwater
I'd rather combat return to being slow, and not having access to special moves grounds the hunter a lot. I would prefer water combat to prefer the monster, but I in general want the combat to favor monster. I want every quest to be an uphill battle.
Tri was legendary. Ultimate felt like a celebration of its greatness. Swimming didn’t take off but honestly it wasn’t bad by any means and I’m glad they did it.
I truly appreciate how the devs are willing to take these risks by adding in unique features, like the underwater combat. Most people would prefer to just play it safe, but I feel that these risks are what's helping Monster Hunter evolve as a franchise
Agnaktor deserves to come back. It was so much more fun than the piscine wyverns of lavasioth and beotodus. Also, 3rd gen introduced my personal favorite classification of monster: brute wyverns. As a hunting horn and hammer main, these are always fun challenges. (In this way, I consider diablos an honorary brute, despite its status as a flying wyvern.) Leviathans are definitely in my tops as well. Always such solid designs, especially compared to the piscine wyverns.
Personally, I appreciated Underwater Combat for balancing monsters. Generally, monsters that went underwater had a weak spot, usually on land. Gobul and Royal Ludroth could be legitimate threats in the water due to their faster speed and larger hitboxes, plus Gobul's access to much more threatening attacks, and Plesioth went from the aggravating fight it usually is to an actually fun and enjoyable one, while still not being a pushover. The only one that felt like a challenge both in and out of the water was Lagi, and, well, that just makes sense for the flagship. Edit: Also Dire Miralis, but again, final boss, it should be a challenge.
1:02:26 "I'm not sure if there's a major difference between Ivory in this entry and base Lagiacrus in GU..." I wouldn't call it a "major difference", but GU Lagi didn't have all of Ivory's land moves and, in my experience anyway, tended to just spam his AOE lightning attacks more than anything else. He kinda felt like a leviathan version of Khezu at times
Eh. I dont feel like he spams the aoe but his entire kit is just a bit hitbox. Unlike khezu who spams his projectiles like a zoner in a fighting game and then spams the electric field if you're close
I'm so happy that other people think 3U was the best, been playing since 2009 and I always had a soft spot for it. Replaying 4U is amazing tho and they're both together my favorite monster hunter games, i think they sum up the entire series in a perfect way.
Imo 4U is the "best". But TriU is my favourite by miles. It just feels like you are in nature, its so well done. And Tanzia, oh sweet Tanzia. Bring back swimming!
I watched this video about a year ago, and your outro, with all the Elder Dragon cutscenes set to "Everlasting Words," stuck with me so much that I had to come back just for that part. MH3U was my first game in the series, and it's still my favorite--every moment of it had such an immense impact on me, and I'm entirely okay admitting fact that my love of the game is just as emotional as logical. It MEANT a lot to me. My Wii U's hard drive unfortunately corrupted a few years back, and I decided I wouldn't replay the game; it just wouldn't, *couldn't* be the same as my first time playing, seeing everything with fresh eyes and experiencing the world of Monster Hunter with complete suspense of disbelief. But even so, just thinking about it brings me back in a really nostalgic way. Thanks for helping me relive a part of my adolescence I thought I'd lost.
3U was my first. The trailer for it was CONPLETELY misleading lmao but I'm glad it got me to buy the game. I played almost 800 hours in it. I was in Lebanon, so I couldn't play it with anyone. It was all solo (3DS). It's my favourite in terms of charm, and my nostalgia for it is through the roof. But the thing with MH for me, is the almost every entry makes the previous one unplayable for me. I can't go back to the much more limited movement and attack options. I want a return of underwater. It allowed for a whole new slew of new environment concepts, and for new monster concepts that can never be done without it, like the Ceadeus. MH has already gone crazy with its mobility, so why not let the hunter have the fluidity of Sekiro underwater. Have streams that speed you up, a pet fish in place of the Kinsect. Separate Hunter Arts for underwater. Let us harpoon the monster to cling to it. There's so much potential
The 3DS version of this game was really interesting, if only because I think the 3D kind of saved underwater combat. You're right about depth perception being a huge issue when underwater, but 3D (self-evidently) solves that. It makes me sad that we're probably never going to see another Monster Hunter game in 3D - depth is super important information that 2D screens are really bad at portraying. On that note, I have to wonder how many western Monster Hunter fans have experienced Portable 3rd HD's 3D mode - considering how much of a flop 3D TVs were, it has to be in the single digits, if that.
I mean, 3D was just a huge flop on the 3DS as well. There's a reason it never made a return going forward into the Switch. All you got with it in MH3U was double vision gameplay and a bit of ghosting. The best thing the 3DS ever did was give you an off button for the function.
@@bladechild2449 For the base model it was awful, but the New3DS finally actually let you play in 3D, and I did enjoy it. It was still a gimmick, but taking photos in stereoscopic 3d, and being able to view them in 3d with no glasses was actually cool. The 3ds was cool. 3d tvs were just a fail.
It’s funny I found your channel originally from part 3 of your “history of monster hunter series, and now it feels like coming full circle with this video celebrating 3U. Its great revisiting the aspects of the 3rd Gen games that make them stand out compared to the other generations, while reminding us 3rd Gen fans why we loved it so much in the first place.
3U had the best online system by far at least when it wasn't crashing. Being able to browse every online room and name rooms was phenomenal and hasn't been matched with entries after.
I was watching a lot if your old vods, and ended up going back to 3U recently. What a fantastic game. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, but it feels much more alive. The old games had so much soul
"The old games had so much soul" perfectly said. It's the whole reason I bounced off World in the end. Something about it lost that soul in my eyes and I could feel it the whole way through including Iceborne. I think Rise has it again though and has become my new Favorite
About Mirialis and the Dragonators (As someone who hunted over 20 Solo) it has "Key attacks patterns" or so to speak, tells that indicate that he is going to follow you or willingly get in place. They are hard to see and are often cancelled if you topple him before you get it into possition. Other thing is Multiplayer, if he focuses in a hunter that does not know of the tells and does not go to the dragonator, then you just miss it as well. Underwater Dragonator is usually when he returns from land to sea and does a bite rush towards the player, so you gotta jump and swim towards the Dragonator before it's fully submerged. Land Dragonator usually is when he does 2 bite rushes after a volcanic explosion attack (The meteor shower one) Not knowing in advance will make you always miss Dragonators. But come on, only schizos hunt enough Mirialis to notice.
I *LOVE* MH3U! Lucent Nargacuga taught me how to dodge. In fact the reasons I was able to to solo every Silverwind Nargacuga deviant quest was because of fighting Lucent. I'm honored to be a third fleet hunter.
This is the game that introduced me to the series! So many core memories; don't think I'll ever forget the first time I entered the flooded forest, or the first time killing Lagi. Thanks for another great video
40:00 all i remember from charms in tri was using them as support for maps, tracking/monster hp, and traps(?). maybe not traps but something that helped with it. i never really got into farming them since it took too long and i might have been on one of the bad lists. 44:50 as a lagi switch axe user if i was ever unsure of the attack going to hit i would just swap to axe mode mid attack to ensure a hit and as i slowly moved closer i would then swap back for more combos. ive already said it but it needs repeating, the underwater fights were fun :D although i never played 3u it looks like a lot of fun
The art style and atmosphere is what I miss most from the 3rd gen. The deep yet muted colours, the misty conditions on maps like the Flooded Forest and Tundra, pre-4th gen Monster Hunter games had this mysterious haze about them, like you were venturing forth into the unknown, unsure what intimidating new beast of nature you would encounter next. The soundtrack as well is easily my favourite across the entire series, every feeling the game wants you to feel, you will feel it. And of course the monsters all just exude character. Deviljho, Amatsu (I know he isn’t in 3U, but he should’ve been) and Zinogre are my top 3 monsters in the series full stop, Agnaktor and Brachydios aren’t far behind. And Ceadeus. Fighting Sunbreak’s final boss made me think about how much I missed the subtlety of elder dragons like Ceadeus. He isn’t some world ending, aoe spamming monstrosity, with a bombastic vocal choir theme, he’s just a big, rare, unique and sympathetic creature who happens to be on a collision course with the village. His encounter has a mythic quality to it and really emphasizes the tragedy in having to put him down. I really hope the next Monster Hunter game takes a few notes from this one’s presentation.
When you start talking about the aesthetics and specifically the night sky in flooded forest, you hit me hard. I thought I was the only one noticing those things. I love the more harmonic, foggy and colder tones in general, and as an artist, I mind aesthetics a lot (and this doesn't mean good graphics). I find the aesthetic of 3u the definition of harmony, not to mention the beautiful OST which contains many of the most beautiful themes in the franchise, and the sea theme in general. It really is my favourite title and the feeling it gave me among all other mh titles is unique. It'll be always my favourite. And I returned on it to work on my guild card after years 🥲
I'm an artist too and I totally agree with you! The maps felt naturalistic and in a way, that matched the theme of the entire game. World was great but felt a lot more fantasy inspired and the open map design meant a lot of the open vistas of the past games got left behind. The scale of some of those MH3U background landscapes just made you feel so small and insignificant. It's something I miss from newer entries. I think Tri's flooded forest is still my favorite map of all time. I haven't seen a single jungle map yet that makes it actually feel like you're in a dense, rainy forest on a cloudy, rainy day. It's perfect.
I don't think any monster hunter game has quite captured the feeling of exploration that comes with diving into the murky depths and the sheer terror of facing a creature in its element that can out maneuver you effortlessly.
3U is definitely my favorite game in the franchise, being the first to go above 1000 hours and being the first to solo absolutely everything (even event quests). The story, the music, the challenge with the mechanics both of the hunter and the monsters, and even underwater combat... I love it all
There was somebody, on the 3U forums, who wrote a paragraph-or-so review of each and every bowgun available in game, and I really appreciated that. It’s a shame those forums got shut down. Anyway great video, big fan of 3rd gen *also Gobul, Snarf, Pecco, and Volvidon are probably my favorite monsters in the series. I’d love to see any of the first three again in modern entries, but at least Volvi is still kicking :,)
My friend in middle school bought me this game for my birthday as he didn't have anyone to play with. We would do hunts on the bus ride back from school, waiting for our parents to pick us up from practice, and so much more. That comradery got me invested in this series and it's one of the most satisfying gameplay loops I've discovered. I think 3U showed me just how much fun co-op games could be and why I think World was so awesome for me as now many of my friends who had no interest in the genre now had an accessible option.
Tri U was my entry into MH, I got it with the Wii U during a promotion at Big W where you could choose one of several games to claim. I had seen MH3 multiple times on the shelves and really wanted to check it out so when 3U was available in this promotion, I jumped at it. I spent hundreds of hours of hours playing the game and ended up with some people I played the game regularly with. I wish publishers cared more for game preservation, I have no issues emulating the game but would love to see an official re-release on PC or even the Switch.
Tri was my first MH. Don’t think i ever got past Lagiacrus, or maybe a few monsters after that (curse under water fights). When World came out as an adult I sunk so many damn hours into that game, I appreciated that it was a bit more accessible to newer players as well as getting rid of loading screens was a great step for the franchise. I wanted more Monster Hunter so I ended up buying 3U for my 3DS. I didn’t even play it that much, or even touch my DS shortly after buying it, but the nostalgia of seeing locals and hearing the music from the Wii game was worth the purchase. I bought Rise and Iceborne recently and have been having so much fun. Despite not getting super far in the game I’m just glad I bought Tri all those years ago, because I’m not sure I would have given the new games a try, and they have given me so much joy these last few years.
Me and my good friend and roommate in college played this so hard our friends talk about it as if we almost died hahah. I miss college. We would go to bed at 4 am wake up at 9 and ply till 4 am again or even 6 am to 10 we treated it as a job and we loved it
3U is what got me completely and utterly obsessed with the series. From the second I picked it up I was doomed to spend countless hours playing it lol, and that I have. Thanks for the video man. Love it
I heavily disagree with your opinion on Alatreon in this game, though I respect your opinion. This version of Alatreon is an incredible fight and one of the best in MonHun at least in my opinion because it truly tests your abilities as a hunter with regards to openings and positioning. Alatreon's head has such a ridiculously high hitzone value that there's little point in attacking other parts, however due to Alatreon's almost regal pose it holds its head far above the player most of the time (something I think took away from its character in World). The key was learning its moveset and learning when you could attack its head, there were certain attacks where it would lower its head for a moment and you had the perfect opportunity to land a golf swing or charged slash. Certain attacks it performed were guaranteed for it to taunt you and lower its head, even while in the air. See, in world people hate when Alatreon flied but in 3U there were still plenty of openings. If it used 4 lightning claws in a row it was guaranteed to taunt and lower its head, so free golf swing. The AOE lightning attack on the ground as well, the fireball, a roar, the AOE lightning attack in the air. There's a guide for it on Gamefaqs but learning its moveset was truly rewarding, more so than any other monster for me. You could even headsnipe it as it turned around after a dragon charge, say. Stuff like that made the fight truly the greatest with the Grongigas in my opinion. There were some cool mechanics like the head stuck in the wall, or the binder, but for the most part it was a simple fight testing your positioning and your fundamentals. Love that fight so much. You don't have to agree, but I hope I explained at least decently why I think it's so amazing. Edit, the attacks are also pretty fair in my opinion, you only really ever get hit when you get greedy.
This is only with perspective of hammer/gs. What about weapons that dont have high dmg peaks to use on those short taunt windows? Maybe you would enjoy the fight much less with those weapons
@@farts77 Probably would enjoy it less but the same concept applies, it's just not going to be as satisfying using a demon dance or half spirit combo on the head than knocking it out with a golf swing.
i played on 3ds and i never had the problem of underwater combat having complicated depth because it was in 3d, the controls were also fine and i honestly enjoyed it a lot
While 4u is the game that really started me on the road of a hunter, Tri was where I got a small, confusing, and fascinating taste of the series that child me just didn't have the option of playing, due to lacking consoles to play. But I always remembered the experience of my friend coercing me into playing the infamous monster guts quest.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was the last game me and my friends played almost every weekend locally. Meeting after school, ordering Pizza and grinding those mantles. Good old days. We played on the 3DS and I later got a Wii U Bundle with the game. This way we could play with the fight on the big screen while still being in the same room which was amazing at the time. I still gladly revisist 3 Ultimate to this day from time to time and it's always a blast. I was never a big fan of underwater combat, but years later I don't mind it as much. If they would port this game to switch I'd buy it day one.
That game holds a great place in my heart for introducing me to the whole serie. Moga village is nostlagic as heck, each time I start my game I HAVE to spend a few minutes listening to it's theme ! Nice review overall, it was interesting to discover your opinion on this gem !
When I was a kid I bought VG magazines I still remember reading the MH: Tri pages in it and think "THIS IS MY GAME" Seeing the Lagiacrus male blademaster armor and Lagiacrus itself made me want to buy the game. Best decision of my life really. Been in love with this franchise literally half my life.
Bruh I started off with 3 Ultimate. Never actually got past the final boss of the single player game. That massive fish with a beard. Then I sold my Wii U… But DAMN was it fun. I can tell you that MH3U still holds a massive place in my heart. Going back to Moga Village on the 3DS, just running around, maybe going to explore the island, stuff like that. It reminds me of my childhood. Well, more like my very early teens. But it was so much simpler back then. I mean life, not MH. I remember not knowing what weapon to use, and trying the S+S. But I found it did basically nothing to small monsters. Of coarse, little me was dead wrong, but back then, I had no frame for damage. And then I took up the GreatSword. And man, it took down Jaggi in a single fully charged swing. And not to mention the SOUND and FEELING of swinging that thing. I still remember beating the Great Jaggi, making my Jaggi Armor/GS, and going to take on the world… Anyway, that’s my reminiscing on the old days.
When it comes to water combat. I agree it would be nice to move faster, esecially during the Ceadeus hunt. However as someone who took time with underwater hunting and who loves it completely, I feel the strategical options it gives me (attacking from above/below, and dodging some attacks easier underwater than on land due to that) outweighs the speed reduction. It also changed the flow of a hunt when a monster transfered from land to water and vice versa. Meaning some monsters you had trouble with may be easier underwater for you and thus balancing the level of fustration and fun during those hunts.
Okay, im convinced fully that my phone is listening to me, I just rebought Monster hunter 3 and 4 with a new 3DS and all of a sudden this video is in my recomended
I'm so glad somebody actually understands how biases, are not only inevitable, but they are also core to how we process what's good or bad and Best or worst. The best thing we can do when you meet somebody with a different opinion than ours, is to be open minded and try to understand why they might think that way, instead of shutting it off as simply "wrong opinions". For me personally, my favorite MH game is Generation Ultimate, mostly because it's the one I've played the most, but it's also because it has almost everything that other MH games had, due to it being a celebratory title. It had the most monsters, it arguably has the most weapon depth due to Hunter Arts, it has the most locales, etc etc. But I know people might not agree with me, and it's fine, I'll actually try to understand your pov and hope you would do the same
My first armor set in this game was barroth, ever since then I have loved that monster, this game will always be a classic, hope we can play it again online with friends
Fantastic video regarding one of my favorite games in the Monster Hunter series! You did this game justice with your in-depth commentary, criticisms on how 3U could be improved, and dedication in playing the other games in the series (both new and old) to see how well the games hold up. Regardless you main Long Sword so I retract my previous statement.
I am only 5 minutes into the video and I can already appreciate how much attention you call to what the individual values in a game to determine whether or not said game is good for them. THANK YOU!
Started on the ps2 original, but 3g is by far my favorite entry. Great art direction, fantastic 3rd gen music, good maps, and I never minded the underwater like a lot seem to. Ceadeus theme always gives me goosebumps. Great vid. I will however have to fight you to the death about green nargy though, super fun fight since he tends to chain his spins together. Rolling through all of them in perfect timing feels awesome.
Thanks for the video. I never experienced 3rd Gen MH properly, but after your essay I added MH3U to my to-do list. I also really appreciate that you talked about the colour choice in MH. Coming from MHFU, an already cartoonish game, MH Tri somehow still managed to overwhelm me with its oversaturated and almost drawing-like visuals. Good to know that they toned it down afterwards.
I really liked grinding moga points in this game. I would get lost for hours a laying the game as if it was a survival game. Cooking, gathering to recraft potions, going to sleep to recover etc
MH3U for the 3DS was my entrypoint for the MH series, i used to play some quests on my Friends Psp back when MHFU was released but never really got a chance to expirence it. I had 0 Friends who had Mh3u tho.. did Solo Dire Miralis first Try with 5 Minuts left on the clock, man i felt good.
Mh3u was honestly the game that got me into MH. Picked it up because gamestop and walmart didn't have the game I was looking for at the time. When I finally find that game, I played it through once then went back to MH. Fast forward to noe and I've bought every game that came out since then
3 Ultimate is my favorite MH as well, the monsters and stages are memorable to me and having G rank exclusive looking armor is the icing on the cake. And while swimming is definitely not very player friendly (as most things in old school MH tbh) it makes the world feel more immersive and makes sense (ur character can jump down a mountain and survive, why not hunt underwater)
The part about MH Tri really hit home with me. I was 13 when the game came out and, having played MHFU a lot, I was hyped. Unfortunately, I had the worst internet connection at the time. If I was lucky, it would go 15-30 minutes before collapsing. Obviously not enough time to establish an online connection and go on a hunt regularly. That means I was able to get a glimpse of that online town but never actually got to truly experience it, even though I tried (desperately). That meant I was stuck with the 15 or so monsters that were available offline. I was so disappointed by that game. The change in visual appearance from MHFU really threw me off, too. Knowing that MHFU built upon MHF1+2, I remember sitting there, like: Is this what MH actually is? I considered MHFU to be a genius exception to an otherwise lackluster experience. Such a shame. There is more to the story (I know no one cares), but in short: Not owning the respective consoles, the next title I got was World, which didn't really catch me with its convoluted map design and comparatively low difficulty (pre-iceborn), so I stopped bothering after about 90 hours of playing. Now I'm back for the PC release of Rise and hoping that Sunbreak will not disappoint, as I am somehow still in love with this game.
My favourite activity in MHT and MH Ultimate was free hunting in Moga Woods, with Cha-cha and the mystery pot, crafting and hunting until the monsters sropped appearing. It combined resource management with the hunting.
As always, you make the raddest Monster Hunter videos. Like you, I started with Tri, but 3U was the most nostalgic for me. I played through most of it with a friend, and it was the only time I had gotten into and through G Rank until World (I've since gone back and spent more time with earlier games, though). It was truly a great time, and it has some of my favorite areas in the series. Also, I've since become both more understanding of those who didn't like the reset monster roster, but also even more convinced it was necessary to do it when they did. At the time, Fredom Unite was the ultimate Monster Hunter game - it had every zone and every monster from the first two generations, and in general the first two gens never removed monsters, only added them, so I can understand someone used to this feeling burned. At the same time, though, I think Tri was the perfect time to break this trend, before it started getting in the way. And by stripping away almost all the old large monsters, they really freed themselves to change the roster as they like in the future. If they had tried to keep only adding monsters, not only would it have gotten progressively harder, likely reducing the number of new monsters we see, but it would have only created more backlash when they inevitably did so later. With the massive graphical upgrade in 5th gen, they would certainly have had to make cuts then, and would have only gotten more pushback than they did with Tri. And while I'm ambivalent about swimming coming back: Let's see the dark caves and torches from Tri come back. Those were one of the best and most atmospheric inclusions, and fighting Giginox in a pitch black cave was incredible.
I started with 4u, my old friend hooked me up on its demo and seeing gore magala got me really interested. Though online players were really rude to me because I was new and didn't understand skills But damn I miss the G rank crimson fatty and dalamadur it was simpler times when I was younger honestly :(
Man I live this game. Introduced me to some great friends that I still hunt with to this day. Such a great community in this series. Ivory Lagiacrus is my favorite monster!
This game was so great. I still remember vividly playing it with my brother and one of his friends. It was so difficult for us to reach even gold ceadus and when I revisited my save file to get to miralis, I found out that I'm on the wrong charm table and that the set I was trying to build couldn't have ever worked out. Still, I adapted, and after dying to stygian countless times due to his insane damage and health, I finally was able to pull through thanks to the brachy hammer. This video did bring back a lot of memories, so thanks a lot for making it :)
Great video and it was nice to see someone defend 3U instead of "water bad upvotes to the left". 3U was the first MH game for me and my friends, and although 4U is our favorite 3U has a special place for us. I really really really hope Capcom does some sort of HD collection including this game for Switch.
To point out what makes Green Narg different. He uses his tail spikes more than normal Narg and they have a higher chance to stun you. As well as the spikes he launches as a projectile being an instant stun.
I also felt the “more aggressive subspecies” really hard with Green narg. He just… never let up, never gave up that predatory joy of hunting you whereas regular narg liked to at least pretend to be calculating and careful. Green narg was only out to hurt you and do it as quickly as possible. It actually made it one of my favorite subspecies.
@@Rat_the_Renegade I only mentioned it because the games tend to say that a lot for subs, but green narg was the only one I really felt on it. His aggression made it a completely different fight for me.
MH3 and ultimate were the games that introduced me to the game and completely got me in the MH series, to the exception that i didn't play online until generation ultimate ( and yes, i did all the multiplayer content either solo, or in local duo, what a delightful experience was it when i finally played online )
Monster Hunter Dos is the introduction of sub-quests and even if it does have sub-quests I have yet to see it in any form in Low Rank. I do know you can sell account items on the red box with the exception of eggs.
This was my 1st entry into the monster hunter - I never finished it because monster hunter 4 came out - and I switched to that - I’m gonna be really interested for you to review that one - 4U is my personal favorite
Man, underwater combat was AWESOME. I'm a gunner and on top of being faster underwater than on land, I also got the bounce-effect on my bullets. It was unique to gen 3 and hitting a underwater monster in the neck would sometimes collaterally hit the head too. Monstrous.
Tri was my first as well, it's hard to deny the underwater combat was a slog, especially if you were maining a Great Sword or Long Sword... but seems after adopting Sword & Shield, it's become a bit more bearable for me as I replayed it on the 3DS... I also miss Loc Lac City, but from what little I could remember it was a bit cluttered compared to the newer dock, though it was always exciting to know whenever a Jhen Moran fight was available once the sandstorm started raging. Also admittedly I played almost exclusively online in Tri, to the point I never saw the ending credits of the base offline game and I'm likely extremely overpowered with my gear to face Caedeus. I also remember not understanding the full gear gave you particular buffs and what the charms even did... at least until my replay on the 3DS. Though honestly, as nostalgic as Tri/3U is, I found much more enjoyment with 4U and GU not needing to worry about underwater fights as much, then Rise made it even harder going back loving the faster movement and enhanced maneuverability. I'll likely still be booting up 3U from time to time to experience the stuff I missed out on Tri and the newer stuff added in Ultimate, especially with my better understanding of the game mechanics thanks to the later games and more info being available online.
Another banger video man. Like I said in your Freedom Unite retrospective, your structuring is really good, and the explanations are top notch. I actually remembered a few months ago that I had tried MH3U on the 3DS and I was mad confused on what I was doing, and I thought the game was wack. Now I wish I could time travel back and convince younger me to give it another go, cause I think there's a certain charm to the older games that I feel like some 5th gen players could like
Tri was my very first game and 3U was a borderline perfect upgrade to it. So many memories associated with them. I genuinely hope they port 3U and 4U to switch some day.
Ah yes! my personal favorite MH game of all time!,Tri was also my definitive entry to the series, and i instantly became a fan,Tri Ultimate blew my mind in how it was everything i love from Tri and so much more!,i would like to share everything i love about this game, but,i think you prety much summed it perfectly in your video!,maybe a personal point of why i love this game so much was indeed the fact that it was the very first game i could play in a TV and then just pass the data to my 3DS,i love portable gaming, and my first ever taste of MH was Freedom Unite on a PSP a friend lend me for a while(i didnt own the console) so having this option in TriU just made me evne more of an addict to a game i already love,i proudleyy have both WiiU and 3DS versions autographed by the developers when i met them at Comic-con! one thing ill never understand tho,why was the cover art for this game changued?,the western release had Azure Rathalos, while the Japanese release had Bracchydios, never understood why that happened
i love mh4u's low rank story but mh3u always comes back around and brings a big grin on my face. it was the first monster hunter game i played and great jaggi carted at least 11 times and was gonna cart since i didn't know what i was doing and couldn't craft anything. it was on my last chance for the quest did learn to take my time and learn how the great jaggi behaved and got the kill then right after i was able to start undering how to craft. in the end mh3u will always have a place in my heart and love almost everything about it! thank for making a great video about it!
So happy to see a video in favor of it compared to the rest. Granted, all the criticisms are valid, but I still hope they bring back underwater combat again with all the new features we've gotten since then
Ahhh thats the game of my childhood, and the one that got me into monster hunter up to this day! I remember borrowing a friend's 3ds after they showed me how the game plays, and then that was it, I was hooked. Until I could buy the game I'd milk dry the demo, and it was also the first time I got to rank g after killing the golden Ceadeus! To this day I played MH4U, MHWorld, and rn I'm omw to rank G on MHGenU! My goal there is to kill the Ahtal-Ka, and once that's done I'm picking up MHRise and Sunbreak later! All of that to say that this game got me hooked on the whole series , and while I don't remember what was really good about MH3U, I know I love it! This video is definitely gonna stir up some memories!
Tri and 3U are both such special games to me that defined such a large part of my growing up. It is incredible how much of these games have stuck with me even now. Meeting your first Jho through a Qurupeco online, fishing a Gobul with a frog, realising just how big Duramboros was and just taking in the vibes of Moga Village. I need to revisit it all soon. Great video 👍
I remember playing this game, when I was 5 I would always have hours of fun while playing the game, even if I was terrified of facing the monsters and I mostly just explored the maps, but I would also love watching my dad play the game and try to beat the Barrioth, now I'm older and playing Monster Hunter World, 3 Ultimate is part of my childhood, it helped to gave me my love of dragons and dinosaurs, and I would play it again! ((And actually fight the monsters))
Already did. Great content man.
I was waiting for that video I got 4u a few days ago and I will get 3u soon
Really cool analysis, btw what song is playing at the beginning of the conclusion?
Plus MH3U removed subquests, if you mentioned that I missed it. Only base Tri had subquests.
remember when the way to check what table you landed in was to get the fishery to fish you some fish, and check what kind of fish you got and then cross reference it to some spread sheet to point you what charm table you landed on? lmao..... the fishes tell you the fate of what table you landed on. lol.
Thats actually kinda sick. Tables shouldn't be a thing imo. That might just be because I love making a build for everything and charms are super important for that
Unrelated, but BAN-BAR-RO
@@stevenwoods2763 when we work together it's much better🎵🎶🤣.
I had a similar experience, top 10 games I’ve ever played.
"Kyamba honorable hunter, Kyamba never hit sleeping monster" - Kyamba, the Liar.
That was so ironic when I went to fight Agnaktor about a week ago. He was sleeping when I placed the bombs, then right as I go to toss the paintball to blow 'em, Kayamba tossed a boomerang and woke them up, making me not get the beak material.
Cringe.
My entry game into the series, on the Wii, and will always have a place in my heart.
I miss you Great Jaggi.
We great jaggi appreciators must stand together and wait for His return
@@federicorostagno7042 Did you guys forget that great jaggi is present in 4u and is the introductory large monster at that?
@@jackkrell4238 Yeah, but not everyone played 4U as it was sadly 3DS only.
Same, Great Jaggi is such a good starter monster to fight and learn the combat in MHTri.
While World was solid with it's Great Jagras, personally Great Jaggi had more to offer as a starting monster imo which makes it an overall better monster.
@@jackkrell4238 yeah and mh4u was released 8 years ago what's your point?
I feel like underwater combat could be reworked now that we are 10 years past tri, specially in rise with the wirebugs to grant us more mobility underwater
I'd rather combat return to being slow, and not having access to special moves grounds the hunter a lot. I would prefer water combat to prefer the monster, but I in general want the combat to favor monster. I want every quest to be an uphill battle.
@@lijahgil that would make every hunt much more infuriating and satisfying in equal measure
@@lijahgil I really liked the old fights because the newer games feel like devil may cry games

Hard disagree underwater combat sucked
To this day I wish swimming would come back
Agnaktor deserves to come back. It was so much more fun than the piscine wyverns of lavasioth and beotodus.
Also, 3rd gen introduced my personal favorite classification of monster: brute wyverns. As a hunting horn and hammer main, these are always fun challenges. (In this way, I consider diablos an honorary brute, despite its status as a flying wyvern.)
Leviathans are definitely in my tops as well. Always such solid designs, especially compared to the piscine wyverns.
@@thebrunssss we are missing out some crazy monster designs/battle not having water combat back :/
Personally, I appreciated Underwater Combat for balancing monsters.
@@Fishy_1998yt That’s because you argued it like a dick.
so true, my first time playing gu all lagi did was sit in place and just hella spam that aoe. i honestly felt like he was easier tho lol
Eh. I dont feel like he spams the aoe but his entire kit is just a bit hitbox. Unlike khezu who spams his projectiles like a zoner in a fighting game and then spams the electric field if you're close
I went from Tri to 4U, skipping 3U, due to college. This video alone convinced me to treat myself and order myself a copy off Amazon. Thanks, Mr. Rad.
I completely forgot about the huge 3D TV push. To be fair, they didn't work all that fantastically, lmao
I had 3d TV was Pissed when I was the only one to buy one!!! Many great movies, but hardly ANY games!! What a wast of 5K!!!!
All you had to do was put the 3d on the lowest setting without turning it off. It worked great for making the models pop.
Portable 3rd is so nostalgic, man I remember playing it with my cousins. I miss those days they all have their own lives now 😔
It’s funny I found your channel originally from part 3 of your “history of monster hunter series, and now it feels like coming full circle with this video celebrating 3U.
Lol most of us played on 3ds and didn’t get to enjoy that stuff. WiiU OP.
I think Rise has it again though and has become my new Favorite
i love the vibe of this game, something abt it is just perfection
Land Dragonator usually is when he does 2 bite rushes after a volcanic explosion attack (The meteor shower one)
Not knowing in advance will make you always miss Dragonators.
I love the atmosphere and charm of 3U. Cha cha and kayamba need to come back. They’re too weird not to be regulars.
40:00 all i remember from charms in tri was using them as support for maps, tracking/monster hp, and traps(?). maybe not traps but something that helped with it. i never really got into farming them since it took too long and i might have been on one of the bad lists.
44:50 as a lagi switch axe user if i was ever unsure of the attack going to hit i would just swap to axe mode mid attack to ensure a hit and as i slowly moved closer i would then swap back for more combos. ive already said it but it needs repeating, the underwater fights were fun :D
although i never played 3u it looks like a lot of fun
this is the game that i began with, found it at a gamestop iirc for 20 bucks back in the day, been an avid fan ever since.
Anyway great video, big fan of 3rd gen
*also Gobul, Snarf, Pecco, and Volvidon are probably my favorite monsters in the series. I’d love to see any of the first three again in modern entries, but at least Volvi is still kicking :,)
Snarf lives in GU still. Such a fun monster
Let's go, can't wait to see this one! I only ever played te 3DS version, but I had a BLAST with it! Definitely one of the best MH games out there 👌
Tri U was my entry into MH, I got it with the Wii U during a promotion at Big W where you could choose one of several games to claim.
Love it
Ah yes the perfect video for me.
The MH game I always wanted to experience but never could.
Been waiting for this one!
Hope you enjoy it!
Finally someone who gets it
100%
Chad hunter. Chad explanation.
Based department?
Yea is for u.
The first minute explains why I like your videos so much
While 4u is the game that really started me on the road of a hunter, Tri was where I got a small, confusing, and fascinating taste of the series that child me just didn't have the option of playing, due to lacking consoles to play.
But I always remembered the experience of my friend coercing me into playing the infamous monster guts quest.
I love this game, thanks for reminding me of the charm tables I’m gonna reset my 3ds tomorrow, to get ready for the Wii U version !
I had 3 on the wii. First monster hunter game and an excellent entry point. Not too complex, just enough to be cool.
hell yeah i love watching these long video essay type videos. i started with rise so it's cool seeing people's thoughts and memories with older titles
Definitely my favourite out of the "old school" games, also holy shit 3U being 11 years old makes me feel eligible for the seniors discount at Denny's
Bruh I started off with 3 Ultimate. Never actually got past the final boss of the single player game. That massive fish with a beard. Then I sold my Wii U…
But DAMN was it fun.
I still remember beating the Great Jaggi, making my Jaggi Armor/GS, and going to take on the world…
Anyway, that’s my reminiscing on the old days.
Imagine if Capcom started remastering/porting over older games to the switch and pc. I want a HD mh4u so badly lmao 😅
Great retrospective. 3U is my favourite in the series as well. The Moga Village music touches me deeply every time I hear it.
47:00
I slap monsters around with Sword & Shield underwater, And on land.
On the 3DS ONLY.
Not to brag.
I am only 5 minutes into the video and I can already appreciate how much attention you call to what the individual values in a game to determine whether or not said game is good for them. THANK YOU!
The very game that got me into the series. I hope a remaster or reboot will be done for switch.
Mh tri brings back so much nostalgia for me 10,000 + hours and was there in the final minutes of the servers being switched off 😭
Thanks for the video.
Tri on the Wii was my first monster hunter game and i immediately fell in love. Of every monster hunter game, id want a remaster of it.
Fast forward to noe and I've bought every game that came out since then
This is one of my favourite mh games and I recently beat dire miralis for the first time, and currently trying to complete it solo
Couldn't agree more
The part about MH Tri really hit home with me.
May I suggest you take the time to save for a DS and get monster hunter 4 ultimate, it’s arguably one of the best mh ever made
My favourite activity in MHT and MH Ultimate was free hunting in Moga Woods, with Cha-cha and the mystery pot, crafting and hunting until the monsters sropped appearing. It combined resource management with the hunting.
I only learned about charm tables a few months ago only to find out I had the best one all along in my OG save file as a wee lad
3U on the 3ds was my first exposure to the series. Only ever got up to HR Agnakor but it has a special place in my heart
Though online players were really rude to me because I was new and didn't understand skills
But damn I miss the G rank crimson fatty and dalamadur it was simpler times when I was younger honestly :(
Man I live this game.
3DS version of 3U plays very well with Circle Pad Pro. Without it I would not have gotten 3U a shot back then, and I'm glad I did.
To point out what makes Green Narg different. He uses his tail spikes more than normal Narg and they have a higher chance to stun you. As well as the spikes he launches as a projectile being an instant stun.
And his armour looks badass in green imo
I also felt the “more aggressive subspecies” really hard with Green narg. He just… never let up, never gave up that predatory joy of hunting you whereas regular narg liked to at least pretend to be calculating and careful. Green narg was only out to hurt you and do it as quickly as possible. It actually made it one of my favorite subspecies.
@@songbird6414 Yeah I did forget to mention he is also more aggressive.
@@Rat_the_Renegade I only mentioned it because the games tend to say that a lot for subs, but green narg was the only one I really felt on it. His aggression made it a completely different fight for me.
Respect! Was going to take a break from monhun before Sunbreak and then you drop a banger video and suddenly I'm back in Moga. LETS GOOO!
MH3 and ultimate were the games that introduced me to the game and completely got me in the MH series, to the exception that i didn't play online until generation ultimate ( and yes, i did all the multiplayer content either solo, or in local duo, what a delightful experience was it when i finally played online )
2:55 Hell yeah, a friend and I didn't have a memory card so we left his n64 on for days to beat that game. The mech fights were awesome.
Man thanks so much for this video! Awesome coverage; being my most nostalgic MH as well.
But oh god you reminded me of charm tables...x.x
Monstrous.
Was enjoying the video already, but at the 2:52 mark is when I knew I was going to subscribe. Great video!
So hype for this. Started this "clunky" and "jank" series on the Wii U and played with a game pad. Still loved it.
I bought a Wii when Tri came out, and a Wii U when 3 Ultimate came out. It's where my favourite monster (Lagiacrus) is at its best. Love it so much.
i love mh4u's low rank story but mh3u always comes back around and brings a big grin on my face. it was the first monster hunter game i played and great jaggi carted at least 11 times and was gonna cart since i didn't know what i was doing and couldn't craft anything. it was on my last chance for the quest did learn to take my time and learn how the great jaggi behaved and got the kill then right after i was able to start undering how to craft. in the end mh3u will always have a place in my heart and love almost everything about it! thank for making a great video about it!
Great video
👍
Love the thumbnail, it just looks super nice
I remember playing this game, when I was 5 I would always have hours of fun while playing the game, even if I was terrified of facing the monsters and I mostly just explored the maps, but I would also love watching my dad play the game and try to beat the Barrioth, now I'm older and playing Monster Hunter World, 3 Ultimate is part of my childhood, it helped to gave me my love of dragons and dinosaurs, and I would play it again! ((And actually fight the monsters))
Of all the monsters hunter games I played I still have to say my favorite is mh3u. Something about it is just so satisfying to play.
First time I saw deviljho in 3U. Good god was I terrified.
As alot of monster hunter games are disappearing with the EShop shutting down I've recently picked up this game because of many videos like this 👌
