  • I am excited to unveil my first ever life-size paleoart sculpture - a detailed life reconstruction of the Brazilian pterosaur Caiuajara dobruskii created for the Living Dinosaurs exhibit now open at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh Pensylvania. To learn more about this exciting exhibit visit www.aviary.org/
    To see more of my art visit www.dontmesswithdinosaurs.com
    To see the top secret behind the scenes process of creating this sculpture and my other art support me on / historianhimself
    Want to learn more about the pterosaur fossils that this sculpture is based on? Well you're in luck because paleontologist Paulo Manzig & his collaborators have made their scientific paper describing this amazing fossil find free and open access. You can see nice high res images of the fossils, read and download the paper here:

    Do you want to help endangered rainforest species by reducing your consumption of palm oil? Thanks to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, there's an App for that:
    itunes.apple.com/us/app/susta...
    Special thanks to everyone at the National Aviary that made this sculpture possible! especially Jennifer Torpie, Cheryl Tracy, Tricia Oneal, Carly Morgan and Robin Weber.
    Also big shout out to Alanna Regester at Silver Plume Exhibitions for the amazing work on the Living Dinosaurs exhibit. spexhibitions.com/
    Paleontologist, pterosaur expert & all around stellar human Dr. Dave Hone hosts a blog called Archosaur Musings where he shares his thoughts about and beautiful photos of the fossils of various bizarre prehistoric creatures he studies: archosaurmusings.wordpress.com/

At 4:00 that Pteranodon head and crest; stunning! that (at least the artistic image) is so gorgeous. The sculpture you made; so exquisitely envisioned and crafted.

    Excellent job, you're truly a talented artist to be able to work in both 2D and 3D.
    One thing, in the future, you should really turn down the background music a bit more. It's a lot better than some of your older videos but it's still a bit loud and makes it difficult to hear/understand you at times. It doesn't help that your narrations sounds a bit muffled to me, you should probably adjust the narration audio so that it's not so muffled sounding, that would make it stand out from the background music more, I think.

      While he is definitely a great artist, it's actually typical for 3D artists to be able to draw in 2D to some extent! It helps with their work, and artistic endeavors usually start with drawing as a kid and last into adulthood until you branch out into sculpting.

      My understanding is that they take the Pterosaur down every time they have a wedding event scheduled... which is quite often... and why people who choose to get married at a living dinosaur zoo wouldn't want to get married under a life sized Tapejarid is well beyond me :{

  • @togglefire3537
    @togglefire3537 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the crest always looks so cool. My favorite bird of that time, I guess if you want to say bird, is the Tapajara (its spelled wrong i know, but if you know dinos im sure u can figure it out).
    First time I ever got introduced to this creature was in Ark survival evolved. Granted it's a lot bigger in the game so you can fly it, but it has that big beautiful head Crest that will have every single color splayed across it in a beautiful pattern. Something about seeing it when it's flying through the trees just dumb struck me.
    Also it latches onto walls for ambushing but the crest and beauty of the crest was what pulled me towards it in the first place.

    1:21 Pterosaurs had a huge RING finger, not a pinky (they had no pinky finger).

    • @DinosaursReanimated
      @DinosaursReanimated  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Well, it is the 4th digit (whereas our human pinky is the 5th), but as far as I am aware "pinky" is not a term defined by developmental biology, but rather is a colloquial term for our outermost finger (or toe). I used the term pinky because it's the most efficient way to communicate to the public that the long wing-supporting strut is indeed the outermost finger. So, you're absolutely right from a developmental biology standpoint, but if you are doing scicomm with the public (my job) and you instruct people who you're teaching try to fold back their ring finger their hand will contort in a way that does not even remotely resemble a pterosaur hand/wing, whereas if you pull back on your pinky (like pterosaur Dave Hone does in the other video you left the same comment on), digits 2-4 tend to curve forward and you can fold the thumb across the palm to make it "dissappear", which quickly communicates the basic shape and posture of a pterosaur hand/wing, albeit imagining the thumb as the missing digit. For kinesthetic & visual learners (like myself) this is the easier way to think about it, and the thing that helped me to (finally) understand pterosaur hand posture in flight, which is why I used the term "pinky."

    5:18 This place seems awesome! Only complaint is that I wish that particular painting had a less shrinkwrapped dinosaur in the background to more effectively display the similarity between birds and their extinct relatives. Dromaeosaurs are expected to have, ironically, looked a lot like modern day raptors. So it was a good choice to use one for the comparison. Which is why it's unfortunate it has such an inaccurate design. It alienates birds more than it shows how similar they are to other dinosaurs. It would help to perpetuate the idea that they USED to be dinosaurs, rather than that they still are.
    But, it's just one painting. Everything else seems so good and so progressive for a dinosaur-focused place. Most museums and other such places still have highly outdated models and information on display. This place is teaching people about many things that other places are afraid to teach.
