- The big basic stuff in a tactic is the easy part. The fine art inside Football Manager is getting the best out of your wonderkids (and other players but they are less cool) with small tweaks to your tactic and player instructions. In this video, we dive into a bunch of tweaks I make to player instructions depending on who is in the team when I’m playing. You can save these changes so you don’t have to make them every time, just a by the way thing.
With that in mind, it’s not some super tedious thing you have to do every time a player is switched into the lineup. It is something, however, that has made certain wonderkids with Oriental Dragon go from good players to the perfect fit for our tactic (looking at you Anssi K). One little player instruction can get someone into the position to succeed that they never would have found otherwise. Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes it’s a subtle thing just to find a space against an opposition tactic, but whatever it is let me free up your mind to find it.

So, I watched and listened to every part of this video, I usually just try and build tiki taka tactics myself. So I just quickly tried it with United, looking at everyone’s roles and building it to each and every player, to win 8-0 first game and beat liverpool 3-0 away with that team is something to behold. Great advice. Everyone should try it.
Playing narrowly with much shorter passing and a lower tempo gave me a lot of possession and 0 shots for the opposition. And using underlaps made my wingbacks to hold the ball first and then pass it inside instead of them chucking the ball at the defenders if i put them on overlaps.
He literally blew my mind with this. Managed to win Austrian cup and 2nd place in league with an newly promoted SV Ried thanks to this 🙂

Just watching the intro makes me feel like I need my own TH-cam player instructions. Imagine how easy life would be then...
7:00 Whenever i would normally use an Attacking Playmaker at CM, i just end up running a CM on Support, then toggling the Shoot More Often, Dribble More, and Get Further Forward options manually to get most of the benefits of an Attacking Playmaker while also getting the option for the guy to take a pop once in a while.
This has caused my backup CM Curvin Waldo to get 4 goals this season for a lower-mid table side, all from range. And yes, I forced this extra paragraph in so i could tell everyone that i got a CM named Curvin Waldo.
Forgot to say in the video and super helpful for having to tweak lots of little things - You can setup & save your tactic specifically for a position and a player. So when you put that player in, it'll have how you want them to play automatically set for them. So when you make subs etc. it's done for you also.
This makes life so much easier, if only set pieces worked as well when changing players...
This is a game changer I forgot this was in the game and immediately saw the specific mark player option my dm would be perfect for as I got overrun in the midfield against Newcastle last night
I don't play FM a lot and I didn't know how much of a difference the instructions make but turns out you can get the best out of every player and fine tune the way your tactic works. Thanks Zealand

I had kind of gathered some of this from some of your more recent videos and from watching the vods and that helped me get Amora into the Portuguese second tier in my first season. player instructions helped me defeat the greatest evil of FM21, Tarzan.

We need a blank "free role" for every position in FM22.
They are there, they are called "Generic Roles". CM, FB, CD, W, AF, etc.

@@lolow313 isn't "centerback" sort of that "standard" role for cb's? Or "attacking midfielder" for AM's?
And even if not: you don't really need that kind of role for CB's, they usually don't do much and the roles they got are clear and can cover all your needs

This is a fascinating video. I've always been cautious about mixing up the individual 'roles' too much as I worry about it unbalancing the broader team strategy I want the team to play with. If it doesn't have as significant an impact on the team cohesion/familiarity as I expect, I think I might mix it up a lot more based on some of these ideas and see how that goes.
I always forget player instructions so absolutely love this video. I'd love to see it for other positions as well, though definitely agree that the CM roles are the most interesting. Going to play around with player instructions when I play later today. So if it goes well, thank you Zealand. If it goes badly I blame you for getting me sacked 😂
@loto I never add anything to what is locked in to the role I choose so this video reminded me that I can refine a role to suit each player

Playing FM from 97/98 version so I can say that I am experienced. I AM still learning a lot thanks to you. I manage Legia Warszawa and lost 0:6 to Man city in cl group. In Poland invincible. I have done some little twists based on this video and won 2:0 with PSG.

These videos are great. Generic roles, or the roles with very few player instructions definitely seem to be the way to go. The only exceptions, as you say, are the playmaker roles, and I think Halfback has a default to split the central defenders in possession... maybe. Inverted wingbacks perhaps too.

Hey Z - great video - Personally I would love a look at this, but tailored to the guys who are playing with "Not great" players; maybe lower league or, as in my case, a very Championship/League One team who somehow fudged their way into the Prem 2nd season via the playoffs.

I think the traits are under appreciated in these roles as well, you touched on it the " comes deep " but if you really want a player to hit top marks you need to be training them traits early
I was a sign the same type of player and plug into tactic, but after watching this (an some of your other vids) i have created more personalised instructions for my players depending on their attributes. When it works I do get a wee FM glow.

This is such a great video. One question for you though - how do you deal with the drop in position/role/duty familiarity you get when changing the roles each week to match the specific players you bring in.
I've tried tinkering with instructions a lot with my spurs team due to the crazy number of AMs they have, but keep getting warnings about not being familiar with the tactic, and that P/R/D familiarity bar is the only one that's low

Hi! Just a simple question. If I give a CM on support (has no player instrucions) an instruction to „roam from position” will he behave or be recognized by the match engine as a BBM (BBM has only one instruction to roam from position)? Or does BBM (or any other postion) have some hardcoded, hidden instructions in the match engine?
I would stick with the roles CM, DM, AP, but recently I've experimenting with the DLP, BWM. since Zealand pointed out the attributes get highlighted when you switch roles I pay attention to what's best for certain players
So in the instructions for each of those CMs - are you changing those “roles” for each player one time through the “individual instructions” or are you having to change those instructions each time you change your lineup?
I would love to see more videos that are similar to this and take a deep dive into the tactical side of players and their uses.
New line up, new instructions.
You can have specific instructions for specific players so when you sub them on etc they have their own personalised instructions.
There is a button for saving that specific instruction set for each player.
There are different lines of thought from different FM streamers- some say it's all about the players you recruit, some say it's all about the buttons you push, and some are somewhere in between.

They always shoot when I expect them to.
Also vital that the player has at least 13 DECISION attribute.
Does setting both your CMs to "get further forward" leave you defensively liable/prone to counter attacks?
What about defender roles? How do they actually affect what the CD do? They don't really add any instructions yet do something different.
What kind of database setup you should use? I used to use database of around 100k players but felt that i didn’t get enough quality african players for example. Now i’ve been trying a save with over 500k players and it’s pain to simulate

Addding: If you use a instruction to get forward,is really necessary a trait to get forward? Does it do better at getting forward?
@@MiliakBR If a player's teamwork attribute isn't high enough he won't listen to your instructions. So, teaching a guy like Keurulainen the trait is a great way to ensure he'll get forward no matter what his teamwork is.
Not sure how it is on this FM however all previous FMs. Shoot less often on everyone except the striker hehe. And always a great way to get the most out of your AMC's. Attacking midfielder support and then specialize the instructions to their skills. It is a mistake I see often though. Players thinking roles first, players second. Nope just adjust the roles to fit your players, much better. As long as the overall balance is still good.
Just tried this for the first time after a tough run of games with arsenal, just beat spurs 5-1...I'm gonna go on a whim and say that this worked
Z mentioned using "Stay Wider" a couple of time in reference to defensive situations. The UI says it's a with-ball instruction, but I don't always believe what I read in the UI. Anybody observed it work both sides of the ball?
It will also impact transitions back into defence as they've got to move back closer to the DCs but it is an instruction for when you have the ball
if you move wide with the ball, and then lose it shortly after, that instruction would affect your defensive play
funny tho, the game refers to carrilero as a defensive role, and the only instruction is stay wider
@Andrew Neeson it also affects the player in the "when opposition has the ball" section because if that player is wide when your team loses the ball he is more likely to defend out wide especially in a defensive transition
HEY... FM22 is already on sight... so, let me give you one Idea... I found a Club on Uruguay... it is a, somehow, kind of canadian football school on Uruguay... and at a city that is like... 10k people... what they are doing there I dont know... but if you want a fun challenge, well... there it is... I feel it will make oriental Dragons look like a easy piece. (I live South Brazil near Uruguay mas never ever never heard of this club or that town)
I don't really agree that Todorov should be set to box to box midfielder. While I agree with the 'get further forward' instruction, especially because he has great decision making, I see him more as a playmaker, a Xabi Alonso kind of player, with great balance, vision and passing...
Can you do a video on Full Backs and Central Defenders? I would like to know how different FBs move and interact with Wingers. On my Braga save I tend to use Inverted Wingers with WBs on support playing very narrow. I like when my wingers tuck inside and WBs take their spot on the byline crossing. But I'm open to exploring, using CWBs and IWBs when I found them and I would like to know how they work together. I have never come across solid IWB and that's my favorite role for FB seeing what Luke Shaw did this year at Euro.

On Attributes what is the difference between blue and green highlights
Watching this has made me think that FM could use a way of showing you which attributes are important for individual player instructions. For example, when you click on the player in the tactical view and it brings up a list of the instructions that player has in the side panel, it could list the attributes and how that player scores on those attributes under each instruction. I know this isn’t an SI forum or anything, just thought I’d spitball and see what people make of it
When you ask a coach to add or remove a trait they will tell you why it is (or isn't) a good idea based on one of the attributes needed, so over time if you made notes of them you should be able to build up a fairly complete picture of what's important for which traits. Not as simple as it could be, but you'll get there in the end.

Would having the shoot from distance trait cancel out the shoot less often option for an advanced playmaker
Impossible to isolate in a test for me at least, but the way I think of it is that person will shoot more than a normal AP but not as much as usual
@@ZealandonYT I was contemplating teaching the trait to one of my midfielders but I’m probably best off biting the bullet and going with a mezzalla on attack with a roaming playmaker and sacrificing some defence in the midfield

They're skins, his is the TCS21 skin I think, what most would agree to be the best available. There are guides on TH-cam with how to install

What skin are you using here?
Anyone else got world class attacking midfielders who can’t do anything? Can’t assist, can’t hit the target. About all they can mange is passing to the winger who crosses for the striker to score.
And every other attacking mid in the league is topping the AVG rating chart so you just know that when you sell your guy he’ll tear it up elsewhere.
Seriously attacking midfielders have been broken for me for like 4 FM’s now. I always end up just having to play them slightly out of position in center mid, and they do slightly better but still not great.
Really depends on your tactic and what traits your AM has. If you enable things like overlap left/right, your team will have a higher emphasis on the flanks.
which facepack is that as my facepack doesnt have the faces in the tactic formation screen
Feel like this is caused by two separate things. Noticed Z is using a new skin (have not gotten that far on the Live Channel) that skin will take the portraits made by his Newgan facepack forward on that screen
I have Eduardo Camavinga in 2025 at Arsenal. He's developed well and Is a quality player for me, but he's been injured constantly. Injuries aren't a problem for anyone else on my team, just him. His report doesn't have him as injury prone and he has 16 natural fitness. Any advice on how to keep him fit?
Maybe check his workload in training
He is brave so he is going to get stuck in, risking injury no and again. Temptation to play such a beast in every game may get him a bit tired now and again. In midfield he is in the workhouse.
Are the injuries recurring? Even if he isn’t injury prone, certain types of injuries can happen again and again. Haaland was a classic example for me on FM20, he isn’t injury prone but kept pulling his calf muscle and my physio suggested that it was a recurring injury which is independent to the injury proneness attribute.

Guys I play a 4 33 and at the base I have a dlp, the tactic is nice but he almost never gets good ratings, should I make him a bwm or something
Same for me, I don't think the game does them justice
I would suggest playing him as a regista does similar things to dlp but will get on the ball more
If they're playing an amc then he won't get space to operate. Also, you need to give him both attacking and support options to pass to. If everyone else is bombing forward then he'll struggle to pick a pass every time.
Regista is definitely the way to go
It's hard to say. The problem does not have to him. It could be the over all tactic and how it plays out. A dlp's main job is making key passes. If the tactic plays out in a way where his passing options are restricted, he won't have a good rating. But it won't be his fault.
Deep Lying Playmaker (Defend) sitting in front in the defence, no additional players instructions. I've had both Rice and Camavinga in this role but rarely do they average more than 6.5...

My world class CM is having a meh patch but for that big derby game I feel him being just decent would give my team a better chance of winning than the youngster who is hungry and tries and works hard and is rewarded with a better rating. I liken it to gymnastics where an okay score for a difficult routine is better than a good score on a basic beginners shot at an easy routine which has a lower multiplier. Football match ratings tend to go to effort and if Messi gets a 6.5 because his head was not in the game but he still assists and most people would agree he was bang average. But his bang average is better on the pitch than a hungrier less able player who runs his heart out.
Roaming Playmakers don't shoot less often. Jeison Serna is a Roaming Playmaker

More risk = more through ball attempts.
What are his attribute colours? And how do you change them? Not reaöly interested in skins
You'll find them in the preferences, aka options, but not sure where specifically. You can also add an extra colour iirc. No skin needed.

Im pretty sure those are the colors the game come with? Idk since I changed the 16-20 to be blue.
Zealand THE GOAT
Does anyone have any tips for how to get the most out of AMC's? I joined Leicester and Maddison, who was arguably my best player in the squad, always got subpar ratings (I played him in a 4-2-3-1 wide). I put him in his desired role and switched through every mentality possible, changed the roles of everyone around him, in case anyone else could somehow get in his way of playing (if that's even a thing), and pretty much anything else I could think of and always ended up with disappointing results from him.
I eventually sold him and bought Thiago Almada for a bargain price, and while he had somewhat better results, he still didn't have the ratings you would expect for a player of his ability. The team is doing fine at the moment, but that is largely due to everyone else, except for the AMC.
Any advice, anyone?

I play as Man U, I get good offers for McTominay, 42m£, I accept and he refuses to sign. Hertha Berlin, OM, Roma all got refused. I talk to him, convinces him to join them, still refuses.
Any advice on what to do?

@@chikennuget3634 I dont know if he would accept their offer, but when I did transfer list him I only got offers around 11m£, which is quite the difference from 42m.
Worst case I keep him, he is a decent player, decent contract, but playing time will be scarce.
Keep him, his personality is amazing for mentoring.

I get what you are trying to explain with individual instructions, but your assessment of Todorov is way off, he is at best average box to box and is bad defensively.Terrible aggression, bravery, positioning and strength, you know attributes that are important for defending. Also you want him to take risky passes as he has elite level of passing, vision and decision (the best holly trinity). Classical Regista - should retrain him.
